Chapter Five: Did You Tell Her?
Rin laughed as Hokochi pulled to a stop light. "No, I don't think that would be a great idea," she giggled.
"But, it would be funny," he argued, a wolfish grin plastered on his face.
She agreed, "Yes, it would be funny... until one of the teachers caught us." She grew solumn. "Don't you find it odd how, when we do something bad, we get caught, yet if the other students do something bad, they don't?"
He shook his head. "It's the consequence of you being the only human in school and me being your friend. It's ok if others do it, because it's expected. But, we are expected to be on our utmost behaviour. Anything less is inexcusable and unacceptable."
She sighed. To her, a prank was a prank. She didn't care who did it, all should be punished equally. But then, there were a lot of things unfair.
As they pulled up to the large gates, Hokochi tilted his head slightly. "Hey, were you expecting a parent/teacher conference?" he asked her, bringing her back to the present.
She indicated that she hadn't been then looked at the midnight blue sportscar in the driveway. "That's Shippo's car. He's probably visiting my mom," she guessed.
"Well, you said he didn't teach today. Wonder if he's not feeling well?"
She shrugged. "It's possible. With Shippo, there could be a million reasons."
Hokochi pulled his car next to the fox demon's and turned off the ignition. Quickly, he got out and went to let Rin out.
"You are the only girl I know who doesn't open her own doors," he growled in playful annoyance.
"My father had studied the behaviour of Englishmen and had decided, of all the things, he liked that behaviour the best. He said that a lady should never have to open her own door, for a true gentleman will always open it for her," she told him with a slight incline of her head.
The wolf demon raised an eyebrow. "So, what do you do when you wanna go to bed and your bedroom door is closed?"
She lightly popped him on the arm. "If there are no gentlemen around, then I open it myself. Duh!"
They walked into the house and she listened for the voices of her mother and the fox. She heard her father as well. She tilted her head to the side. They must have been in her father's office, but that didn't make much sense. Why would Shippo...
Fear shot like cold water down her spine as she raced to the office and burst inside. "What's going on in here?" she demanded.
Her mother and father stood next to each other off to her right while Shippo stood to her left. All three looked as if they had been arguing for quite some time. This scared her even more.
"Perhaps you would like to tell us, Rin?" her father whispered in his soft, dangerous voice.
Rin shot a look at Shippo. "What did you tell them? You promised me..."
"I told them nothing that would cause me to break my promise," the kitsune interrupted before she could finish her sentence. "I merely did as you had asked. I informed your parents of my intentions concerning you."
Her face paled. Why couldn't he had just told them about the abuse she recieved at school? That would have been ten times easier to deal with. With a small voice, she murmurred, "We never came to an understanding about that yet. You never answered my question."
"Because I didn't know the answer at the time," he responded truthfully. "Now, I do know the answer."
The fox demon walked up to her and took her hands into his. "Rin, I do love you. You are everything I could ever want in a girl. Not only are you intelligent, kind, and understanding, but you are beautiful, talented, and noble. I cannot offer you a huge mansion or billions of yen, but I can promise that you will never want for anything. I will love you until the end of time and even beyond that."
Rin's eyes widened at his speech. She could feel her heart flutter in her chest. She had wanted to hear those words for a long time now. But, she was angry. She did not know why he was telling all of her this now, but it wasn't the place nor the time for such.
She growled and snapped, "How dare you! What did you do? Grab my parents and tell them this? What did you want? Advice on how to handle me? You couldn't tell me this in your car or in the orchid? Instead, you wait until both of my parents are present to speak this aloud? What are you trying to prove?
"I cannot believe you would do something like this, Shippo. It feels like an act. Like you are putting on some big huge show for my parents. I don't like this and I don't appreciate it."
He was taken aback. He had expected her to burst into "I love you"s and hug and kiss him. He had even expected her to be shocked, and then perhaps cry in happiness. He had not expected her to yell at him. Even worse! She wasn't yelling! She had taken on the same cool, calm voice that her father uses when he's angry. That scared the kitsune.
"I'm sorry if I upset you," he whispered, trying to remain calm. He could feel his heart breaking at her rejection. "I... didn't quite understand the concept... so, I came and asked Mother about it.... She kinda, well, she already knew about us. Your dad did too... sort of.... I wanted to tell you in private. Perhaps over dinner, but I saw you come in and all I could think was to tell you here and now."
Rin sighed and pushed his hands away. She lifted a hand to massage her temple. She walked to one of the large chairs that stood in front of her father's desk and sat down in it.
Shippo approached her and knelt in front of her. "Rin?"
"Shippo," she whispered, "I'm not angry with you for professing your love for me. I just wish you would've picked a better place to do it in. Somewhere where we could talk in private and figure out where to go from here."
"You don't have to figure out your future in privacy, Rin," her mother spoke up for the first time. "If you love him and he loves you, then that is all that is needed. What else is there to figure out?"
Rin closed her eyes. "Momma, it's not that simple. There are so many other things in the mix."
"I'm still trying to figure out what else you could be hiding from us," Sesshomaru spoke in his soft, whispery voice.
"What else I could be...?"
"Do not act stupid, Rin," he growled softly. "I heard every word you said. When you came charging in here, you were terrified. You wanted to know what he told us. More importantly, you wanted to make certain he kept his promise. What I want to know is, what that promise was."
The dog demon looked to the kitsune before turning back to his daughter. He knew he would get no answers from the demon, for Shippo believed in keeping his word. But, he would get answers from his daughter. He could smell the fear creeping back up in Rin. He raised an eyebrow.
She looked down at her hands, which had somehow entwined with Shippo's. "Are you made at me for loving Shippo, Daddy?' she asked the taiyoukai.
"Answer me, Rin," Sesshomaru ordered firmly.
Rin sighed, "It's nothing really. Just some stupid kids picking on me at school. No big deal."
"Picking on you?" Kagome repeated, looking at her daughter in surprise. "Why on earth would they do that?"
Something in Rin snapped. "Because, Mother! Don't you realize I'm the only human in that entire school?! I didn't even want to go to that school, but you put me there. I wanted to go to a normal school with kids just like me. I wanted to hang out with my friends and try to live life like a normal human! I never asked to be put in that school! You never even asked me if that was where I wanted to go! You just assumed! Both of you are always assuming you know what's best for me! Well, guess what! You were wrong!"
The girl pushed Shippo out of the way and ran out the room. They could hear her bedroom door slam shut.
After Shippo had left, Kagome slipped quietly to Rin's room. She lightly knocked on the door and called, "Rin? May I come in?"
She took the no response as a yes and let herself into the girl's room. She found Rin sitting on her windowsill staring out into the stars. The miko stood beside her daughter to look out with her. "It is a beautiful night tonight. The moon and the stars... Sometimes, it reminds me of the shrine and the home I grew up in. Other times, I'm reminded of a time long gone."
Rin nodded softly and rested her head on her raised knees. When she spoke, her voice was barely a whisper. Had Kagome not been paying attention, she never would've caught what the young girl said, "Sometimes, I think about that time and I realize how lucky I am. Had I never met Lord Sesshomaru, I wouldn't be here today. In more ways then one, he truly is my father."
Shippo watched her go. He was overjoyed that she returned his love, but upset that she was angry. He had never seen her more depressed. His shot a nasty glare at Sesshomaru. "I hope you're happy now," he growled.
Kagome was shocked at Rin's confession. She wasn't surprised, just shocked. How could Rin keep something like that a secret? She looked at her husband in worry. "We should go to her school and talk to her principal. That needs to be put to an end," she told him.
Sesshomaru growled at the kitsune and walked behind his desk. He carefully arranged the papers neatly and then looked up. "When I go to that school, I will find out who is behind it. And when I do, they will learn what it means to mess with one of mine."
"Don't you see?" Shippo snarled. "That's just what Rin didn't want! That's why she didn't tell you. She knew the first thing you would do is either threaten the kids or worse. She doesn't want that."
"Tell me, then, since you know my daughter so well, what it is that she wants," the demon lord whispered coolly.
Shippo held back a shudder. He calmed himself and then answered, "She wants to be left alone. If you are going to go to the school, then talk to her teachers or her principal. Talk to them. No threats, no promises on other lives. Or, if need be, put her in another school. Honestly, the demon school isn't really the best place for her."
"She is getting topnotch education. That place carries only the best of knowledge," Sesshomaru argued.
"And she's not learning any of it if she's getting slimed everyday!" the kitsune shouted. He felt odd, yelling at Sesshomaru. But, at the moment, he didn't really care too much. Let the dog demon do as he will.
"I think she makes very good grades, all things considered," Kagome offered her opinion.
Shippo shook his head. "Because she's always asking for extra assignments," he told her. "Even in my class she asks for extra work."
"Isn't that a good thing? She has a need for learning," Sesshomaru tilted his head to the side.
The kitsune gave a frustrated sigh and lowered his shoulders. "Have you ever wondered why the only friend she invites over it Hokochi? A wolf demon? We all know she's scared of wolves. So, why does she have a wolf as a friend?"
Kagome was confused as well. She didn't know where the fox demon was going with this, but she didn't like it. She never understood why her daughter had befriended a wolf, but she never really questioned it. She had thought her daughter was getting over her fear. Apparently, that wasn't the case. She gazed at the kitsune curiously, waiting for him to finish.
"She doesn't have any friends aside from Hokochi," he answered his own question. He bowed his head. "Who wants to befriend a mortal? Within a few years, she'll be gone. I've talked to the other teachers about her and they all say the same thing. She's a great student. Wonderful to have in the class. But, none of them understand why the wolf demon hangs around her. They all know the inevitable."
"Are you telling me even the teachers have sentenced her to death?" the dog demon growled menicingly.
"What else do you want me to say?!" Shippo shot back. "It's not like the teachers don't like her. In fact, many of them adore her! Even her math teacher likes her! And that says a lot about a spider demon. But, what do you expect, Sesshomaru? When you peel off her personality, her kindness, her beauty. When you take away all of that, she's still a mortal. Which means, she will die. And as far as many of us are concerned, she'll die young. She won't even get a chance to experience life."
Kagome threw in, "Not if you claim her."
Both demons turned to the miko with equal looks of surprise. She just shrugged and explained herself, "If you claim her, Shippo, then she will have that chance. Who knows? Maybe she'll gain some more demon friends if they find out she won't be dying within this century."
Shippo had thought about claiming the girl, making her his own. In fact, now that he knew she loved him, he had every intention of doing just that. But, so soon? He figured within a year or so, but right now? He thought about it.
"You would take my... OUR daughter out of this house and place her in the care of that?!" Sesshomaru exclaimed, pointing to the kitsune.
Kagome shook her head. "I would have him come stay here. At least until they could get on their feet and get their own money. And yes, I think Shippo is quite capable of taking care of her. He would make a fine husband to our daughter."
The kitsune blushed a little, but shook his head. "I can't claim her," he informed them. "Or rather, I won't. I don't want to claim her until I'm certain it's what she wants. It would be wrong otherwise."
Kagome smiled, "Then why don't you ask her? Take her out to dinner at one of those fine restraunts and ask her."
Shippo thought about it. He could do just that. He knew the best restraunt for such a proposal. He glanced at Kagome's ring. "Do you think she'd want to do the human wedding as well?" he asked her.
She shrugged. "It would be a good suggestion.... I've got an idea. Don't mention claiming. Buy her an engagement ring and ask her to marry you. Like the humans do. After you are married, then you can talk to her about claiming."
It sounded like a good idea, but Shippo wasn't going to marry Rin without claiming her. He declined, "I'll buy her the ring. And I'll ask her to marry me like the humans do. But, I will also ask to claim her. I wish to make her my own before we wed."
"Why don't you ask her first?" Kagome suggested.
He nodded. He would ask her first, but he knew he would not marry her without claiming her first.
