Chapter Six: A Perfect Evening

Shippo smiled to himself in satisfaction. Everything was going to be perfect tonight. The restraunt was picked, the table reserved. He had even talked to the chef about the special dessert.

He dialed Rin's number on his cellphone and waited for her to answer. When he did, he spoke in the phone, "Hey, Rin. It's me. Today is Saturaday. What are you doing tonight?.... Oh, really? Hmmm... Well, I was kinda wondering if you would like to go out to eat tonight? There's this really nice restraunt in town that I would like to take you.... Really?! Great! I'll pick you up at... 6:30?... Cool. Make sure to wear something nice. The restraunt is one of those formal things... I'll see you later."

He hung up and danced around his room. Oh, it was going to be a perfect night! He ran into the kitchen to grab a soda and saw Inuyasha sitting at the table. "Hey, Inuyasha," he said. "I'm going out tonight with Rin to eat."

The hanyou nodded as he ate his instant noodles and flipped through the latest sports magazine. "Just make sure you're careful. One scratch on that girl and Sesshomaru will have your head," he warned between bites.

Shippo laughed, "One scratch on her and Kagome will have my head."

The half demon did not disagree.

Rin looked in the mirror at the teenager staring back at her. She wore a deep red kimono that had light blue flowers on the shoulders. Around her waist was a light blue sash. Her hair was pulled back in a simple bun. She glanced at her mother. "Well?"

Kagome smiled. "You look beautiful, my dear. Just make sure you don't stay out to late and don't let him do anything you are not comfortable with."

The girl nodded to her mother and kissed the miko on the cheek. As she walked towards the door, she stopped by her father's office. For a moment, she just watched him as he worked on his computer and did his paperwork.

"Yes, Rin?" his voice was soft, with a tinge of annoyance on the edge.

She shrugged and walked in. "I just wanted to let you know that I'm leaving. I'll be back a little later," she promised.

He said nothing and did not look at her. She took that as a sign that he did not wish to be bothered. Counting her blessings, she turned and left the room.

As she stepped out of the office threshold, the doorbell rang. Rin nearly squealed with excitement as she rushed to the door to pull it open. She nearly fainted at the sight.

Shippo was dressed in a rich blue kimono and pant set. The sleeves and hem were gold embroidered symbols from Feudal Japan. His hair was pulled back in a low ponytail, to cover his ears, and held there with his usual blue ribbon. He smiled at her and offered his hand.

She accepted with a blush and let him lead her out to his sportscar.

They pulled up to the restraunt and Rin let out a gasp, "How did you ever manage to book a table at this place?!"

It was probably one of the most expensice restraunts in town. It was definantly one of the nicest. A five star restraunt that specialized in perfecting Japanese food. She looked at the fox demon curiously. He had to have something up his sleeve.

The smile he flashed her rose her suspicions even more. He got out of the car and went to her side to let her out. Handing the keys to the valet, he offered his elbow to her and led her into the restraunt.

The hostess greeted them, "May I help you?"

"Yes, do you have a reservation for Mr. Taisho?" Shippo asked, with a wink to Rin.

The hostess looked at her seating chart and then nodded. "Yes, sir, we do. Right this way," she said, taking two menus and leading them through the restraunt.

Rin looked around her in amazement. She hadn't realized it was a demon restraunt! All around her she saw demons. No wonder it was hard to book this place! You must've had to be a demon just to do it!

The marble walls were filled with paintings of various monsters of all shapes and sizes. The chandeliers had gargoyles holding the candle-shaped lights. The tables were covered with silk green and white clothes that had black and gold dragons along the borders of them. Even the chairs contained a demonic theme with the straightbacks having various demons carved all in them.

They were led to a table that looked almost big enough to sit a small family. Shippo glanced at the hostess questioningly and recieved an apologetic shrug. "It's Saturaday night," she explained. "This was the best we could do on such a short notice."

Rin offered the woman, an air imp, a smile. "It's ok. This table is fine," she assured the woman.

The imp nodded and left the couple. Shippo helped the teenager to her seat and then took his own. He smiled at her. "So, what do you think?" he asked.

She took another look around her and shook her head. "I don't know what you are trying to tell me, but I don't think it's working," she pronounced. She then assured him, "It's not that I don't like the place. On the contrary, I think it's beautiful. It's... odd. But, beautiful."

He sighed in relief. When they had first entered the restraunt, he had seen her reaction and feared it had been a bad choice. Hearing her assurance, he felt a lot better. He smiled. "Let's take a look at the menu. I'll order us a nice bottle of sake."

A waitress came by and took their drink order. Shippo ordered the finest bottle of sake the place had while Rin ordered tea. While the waitress went to put in their drink orders, the couple glanced at the menus. Rin's eyes widened when she saw the prices. "Everything's so expensive!" she exclaimed.

He laughed, "Order whatever you want. I highly doubt you've ever looked at prices before."

She shrugged. "When I'm with my parents, I don't. Mostly because my father gets angry when I do. But, other times, I do pay some attention. I don't really like spending a whole lot of money."

"Your descendants will be grateful," he said with a chuckle.

Rin took the sarcastic remark for what it was, and found something she thought she would like. When the waitress came back with their drinks, the couple ordered their food.

After ordering, Shippo sat back in his chair and gazed at Rin. She looked so beautiful tonight. He couldn't believe how lucky he had gotten. She caught him staring and demanded to know what he was staring at. He smiled. "I just can't get over how wonderful you look tonight," he whispered honestly.

She blushed. "You don't look that bad yourself."

"Really?" he sat straighter and looked at his kimono as if studying it. "I don't know. This thing kinda bugs the hell out of me. But, it was the only nice piece of clothing I owned."

"It looks brand new," Rin observed.

He scoffed, "That's only because I only wear it on special occasions."

She flashed him a coy grin, "And what's the special occasion tonight?"

Before he could make a come back, he spotted a familiar couple walking towards their table. His eyes widened suddenly. "Edward, Elizabeth! How odd to see you here," he said, standing up.

Rin turned in her seat to see Mr. Peabody and his wife approach the table. Her eyes widened in surprise. "Mr. Peabody?"

The rat demon gazed at the girl. "Rin? What are you doing at a place like this?" he asked.

Rin and Shippo both blushed. The kitsune answered, "Rin's never been here, so I thought I'd take her."

"You could join us if you would like," the girl offered. "We have plenty of room."

Shippo could feel the blood rushing from his face. He hadn't planned on this. The last thing he wanted was an audience tonight. But, he knew to speak up now would raise more questions, so he relented and scooted his chair to sit closer to Rin.

Rin called to the waitress to bring menus for the rat demon and his mate.

"Oh, Rin, this is my mate, Elizabeth. Elizabeth, Rin here is my number one student in class," Mr. Peabody introduced.

The teenager and the demoness smiled at one another.

"Edward has told me so much about you, Rin," the demoness proclaimed. "You truly are a remarkable girl. Especially for one so young and so.... human."

Shippo gripped the table cloth underneath, hoping Rin had taken the compliment for what it was. Luckily she did as she replied, "And Mr. Peabody has told us a lot about you as well. They say that when you love someone, you tend to exaggerate all their best qualities, but I see now he did not exaggerate about you."

Elizabeth blushed and squeezed her mate's hand.

Mr. Peabody waved his free hand at the young girl. "Outside the classroom, please, call me Edward. I really dislike all that last name, mister stuff," he told her.

Rin nodded. "I was always taught to be respectful to my elders..."

Edward stopped her before she could say more. "Please," he nearly begged, "I'm only a few decades older then Shippo here. I know for a fact you don't call him mister. Not even in the classroom when you should."

The kitsune laughed, "It's a bad habit of hers. She still calls her father 'Lord Sesshomaru' at times."

"Only when he's being a dick," the girl said before she could stop herself. She clapped a hand to her mouth in shock.

Edward and Shippo burst into laughter as Elizabeth gave a soft giggle. "I've heard of Lord Sesshomaru. The Lord of the Western Lands. A... dog demon?" the rat demoness asked.

Rin nodded. "He's really not that bad. Sometimes he's a bit stubborn, but he truly is a great guy."

"Sometimes?" Shippo exclaimed as he wiped the tears from his eyes. "Try most of the time, Rin. That guy is as stubborn as his brother, if not worse."

"Shippo," the girl warned, "you know I don't like it when you speak poorly of Lord Sesshomaru. He is my father, after all."

This sent Elizabeth back in her seat. "Are you a half demon?" she inquired.

Rin huffed, "I wish! At least then, I wouldn't get messed with so badly at school."

"Rin is a full human," Edward explained, taking a sip of his champagne. "Lord Sesshomaru had adopted her when she was small. He and his mate did, at least."

Elizabeth nodded and then questioned, "Isn't his mate a human as well? A priestess?"

Rin confirmed, "Yeah, she is."

Edward looked up and smiled. "Well, tonight is certainly turning into an interesting night. There's Tomo," he said, gesturing to the spider demon who was walking into the restraunt.

Rin felt her face lose colour as she turned to look at the spider who was her math teacher. Was it teacher night or something here? She could hear Shippo groan softly as the rat demon waved Tomo down.

"Rin? Did you come all the way to this restraunt to ask for extra assignments?" the spider demon greeted as he approached the table. "If so, it was a waste of time."

Rin shook her head. "I didn't even know I was coming here. Shippo brought me."

Attached to the spider's arm was a human girl who didn't look any older then Rin. In fact, she looked like the same age. Rin briefly wondered if that was her teacher's mate. She didn't realize he was into immature, naive girls...

"Tomo likes eating here," the girl said, giggling. "It's one of his favourite restraunts. That's what he told me. Isn't he just drop dead gorgous?!"

"Tomo, you must dine with us," Edward informed. "It's such a wonderful evening and you're always pleasant company."

Rin looked at the girl her teacher was with and wondered about his sanity. Tomo accepted Edward's invitation and took a seat next to the rat's mate. The girl sat between him and the kitsune.

"So, you're Rin?" the girl asked. "My name is Suki. Tomo and I met at this fair they are having downtown."

Rin nodded slowly. She gave the girl a small smile. "It's a pleasure meeting you, Suki," she said, not really meaning it.

Rin looked up at her math teacher, trying to discern his reasons for bringing the wild girl here. His face spoke of nothing, so she decided to try being subtle, "Mr. Tomo, I never knew you were into going to fairs."

The spider flashed her a dangerous look before Edward peeped in, "Rin, remember when I said not to use the word 'mister' outside the classroom? That generally goes for all demons. Unless they say otherwise."

Tomo answered her as he lightly squeezed Suki's hand, "It's not something I do often, but I thought tonight would turn out to be an interesting night."

He looked at the girl he was holding and gave her a seductive smile. The naive girl immediately bought the smile and leaned in to kiss him. As they kissed, he let his eyes wander to Rin. His eyes spoke of the hunger he had. And it wasn't a hunger that would be sated by normal food.

Rin inclined her head to let him know she understood and would not interfere. She went to a demon school and lived among demons. So, it was no surprise to her that any would take on human prey. Until tonight, she had never witnessed it.

Edward changed the subject, "Shippo, tell me, how is Rin doing in your class?"

The kitsune, thankful for the subject change, smiled. "She does very well. Though, she's always wanting extra work. I wish some of my poorer students were like that."

Tomo broke the kiss and rolled his eyes. "It's a habit of hers that I've been trying to break. If she doesn't need the extra work, why give it to her?"

"Well, for one, it keeps her from getting into trouble with that wolfish character she hangs around with all the time. And aside from that, it keeps the other kids off her back," Shippo explained.

Edward and Tomo both looked at Shippo curiously. Then, they looked at Rin. Edward was the one to ask the question, "Keep what kids off your back? Has someone been messing with you?"

Shippo glared at the girl, "You told me you'd told your teachers about that!"

Rin felt the blood rush to her cheeks as she stared down at her hands. She gave a small shrug. "I have," she whispered meekly, "just not those two."

Tomo scoffed, "Then you haven't told any teacher that gives a damn. Had you come to me, I would have put a stop to it."

"I told the old hag and I told Ms. Ikeda. Neither did anything. In fact, I was the one who got in trouble," Rin confessed.

"As I said, you didn't tell any teacher who would give a damn. That old hag hated everyone and didn't care what happened to anyone," Tomo fussed.

Edward held up a calming hand. "Rin, you still haven't answered my question. What exactly has been going on at school and who's responsible?"

The girl sighed, "There really isn't any particular group, if you don't count the group of ogres that hang out near my locker. It's just... kids in general. They tease me and call me names. Usually it's nothing more then that. A couple months ago, they got green slime all over me, but that doesn't happen often."

"Who did you tell about the slime?" Tomo asked, not liking that idea. He may not particularly care for humans, but Rin was one of his favourite students and he'd be damned if anyone was going to mess with her.

Rin glanced up at Shippo. "I told Shippo, and he took care of it. The principal had given the ogres two weeks of detention."

Edward shook his head. As far as the rat was concerned, two weeks of detention wasn't harsh enough. Rin was too bright and smart for foolishness like that.

"So, is Shippo like one of your teachers?" Suki asked suddenly.

Rin gave the girl a weird look and nodded.

Suki brightened at her correct observation. Then, in a wise voice, she said, "Gotta be careful with that. If the school finds out your dating your teacher, he could get fired. And you could get expelled."

"Are you two dating?" Edward asked suddenly. He had known the kitsune and human were at the restraunt to eat, but he hadn't known it had been a date. He had assumed it was just two cousins having a meal together.

He thought about it for a moment. Technically, they weren't really cousins, because they weren't blood related. Edward had never supported inner breeding, but if the two weren't really related... well, that was a different story.

Rin looked at the kitsune for support. She honestly didn't know how to answer the rat's question. She knew the rules Suki had mentioned didn't really include her. Rin was a human in an all demon school. Even if the school board found out about her and Shippo, they wouldn't do anything. Demons didn't really understand human longevity.

Shippo gazed at the girl and took her hand into his. "Actually," he said, finally, "I'm not sure after tonight. I suppose it really all depends on this night."

Rin rolled her eyes. "If you are wondering whether or not I'm going to go out with you again, it's not that hard to figure out. Especially after you told my parents your 'intentions' with me."

Edward laughed in his glass. "Your 'intentions', Shippo?"

Tomo said nothing as he watched the interaction. He had known from the moment he had seen the kitsune and human together that they were a couple. Even before tonight. He had watched them from his classroom window plenty of times when they thought no one was looking.

The kitsune just gave a mischievous grin. "Like I said, it all depends on the outcome of tonight."

"What do you mean by that?" Rin demanded to know, but he would not tell her.

"Do you think that's fair?" Elizabeth asked as she sipped her champagne. "I mean, were she not in your class, it would be a different story. But, wouldn't you show favouritism if you dated her?"

Rin scoffed, "Favouritism? If anything, he's harder on me then anyone else in class! Sometimes I think he makes me a whole separate test just to see how well I was paying attention!"

Edward grinned at that. "Now, why didn't I think of something like that?" he asked himself aloud. "You know, Rin, a separate test to check how well you pay attention might be good for you."

Tomo scowled, "God knows the girl daydreams. And yet, she still manages to do well."

Rin blushed as Edward agreed, "Yes, I like to challenge her during class, just to make her pay attention. I'll blurt out something in English and make her translate. I've found it a challenge just to teach her!"

The spider demon agreed, "She keeps things interesting in class. Were it not for her, I'd probably either fall asleep or wind up killing half the class due to stupidity alone."

Elizabeth shook her head. "That still doesn't answer my question. Whether Shippo challenges her or not, just her being in his class is enough to raise suspicion."

"There is no where else for her to go, my dear," Edward told her.

The kitsune nodded. "I teach the highest possible regular history class. And, I'm the only teacher for that class. Unless the principal can find a teacher who is as good as me and hire them, she's stuck in my class."

Edward snorted, "He's not going to hire anyone else. The class isn't really that popular because there aren't enough smart students to take it. They'd have to dumb down the class just to make it large enough to contain two teachers."

"That is not something Rin needs," Tomo added. "She needs the challenge or else she finds other things. A few weeks ago I caught her in the hall with that Hokochi kid and a jar of frogs..."

Rin sighed, "Mr. Gushi wanted to use the frogs in an experiment in science class. Hokochi and I were going to set them free."

The spider demon waved his hand in a gesture that meant 'see?' "She needs challenges to keep her mind moving," he said. He turned to Rin then, "That's why I don't give you extra assignments. I don't want you surpassing the class any more then necessary. I prefer to have a reason to make you work in class. To challenge you."

Rin nodded in understanding. "It would still be nice to have an assignment every now and then. Perhaps... once a month?"

Edward slapped his hand on the table. "I know! We should give her a list of brainteasers each month. It would be enough to keep her satisfied and give us something to look forward to."

Shippo tilted his head. "Brainteaser?"

Edward nodded. "They are puzzles that take time to figure out. Most of it is logic and common sense stuff, but not always. They can be pretty tough. My brother had bought me a book of them for Christmas one year. We'll have to get together one day and go through them. Figure out which ones would be good for Rin."

Shippo nodded as he watched the waitress begin picking up their plates. They had talked all through their meal. The kitsune smiled at the waitress. "I would like that dessert now," he told her.

Rin gave the fox a surprised look. "All that food you just ate and you want dessert?!" she asked.

He laughed, "Actually, the dessert is for you."

"I didn't want a dessert," she told him, a frown appearing on her face.

"Trust me, darling, you want this one," he assured her.

Her frown deepened as she growled, "Don't call me that. I hate that name."

He raised his hands up in surrender. "I'm sorry," he apologized. "I forgot."

Suki, who had begun feeling left out, trailed her fingers up Tomo's arm. She kissed his shoulder and gazed at him with pretty eyes. Tomo wasn't sure whether he should vomit or let the girl believe he was taken with her charms. He decided the latter was best, considering later on, he planned on making a meal out of her. That thought in mind, he flashed her a smile.

Rin looked down at the tablecloth and noticed a small white spider crawling along it. A mischievous grin appeared on her face as she nudged the spider gently into her hand. She held her hand out in offering to Tomo. "Here," she said.

The demon looked at the gift and smiled at her slyness. Then, he nearly covered his ears as Suki shrieked in fear. "It's a spider!" she shouted in terror. "Kill it! Kill it!"

Edward and Shippo stifled laughs as Elizabeth shook her head at the girl's poor conduct. Tomo merely held out his hand and took the human girl's offering. He tilted his head slightly as the small white spider rested on his fingertip.

"Why would you wish death on such a small creature?" the spider demon asked the teenager he had brought with him.

The girl shuddered. "I don't like spiders. They scare me."

Tomo lifted his gaze from the spider. He wondered what the girl would do if he were to reveal his true form. Not knowing exactly how many other humans were in the restraunt, he dismissed that idea. He pressed his thumb to the finger that held the spider and smushed it.

Rin shook her head. She had read somewhere that spiders didn't really care much for their own kind. She wasn't surprised that Tomo had killed the white spider. She wasn't even surprised at Suki's confession. Spiders were a common fear among humans.

The dessert came out then. It was a large bowl of rice pudding. Rin's eyes widened. "You expect me to eat all of this?" she asked Shippo in alarm.

The kitsune shook his head as he dipped a spoon into the bowl. He swivelled the spoon around a bit before taking a spoonful of the pudding out. "Just one bite. That's all I ask," he said, placing the spoon to her lips.

As the others watched, Shippo fed Rin the rice pudding. The moment the stuffed entered her mouth, Rin felt something hard. She chewed around the object and grabbed her napkin. Like a lady, she pressed the napkin to her mouth to spit the hard object out.

"Don't they know how to make rice pudding correctly? They put something...."

She stopped midsentence as she looked at the object while she cleaned it. It couldn't be...

Her eyes widened. It was! A princess cut diamond sat on a white gold band and was surrounded by smaller diamonds. She looked up as blue eyes met hers. The look in his eyes spoke more words then his mouth ever could. Rin forgot to breathe.

"Would you... be interested in wearing that for me?" Shippo asked her. His face had become serious when she had pulled the ring out of her mouth.

Suki pressed a hand to her mouth and tugged on Tomo's sleeve. "Isn't that romantic?!" she squealed.

Elizabeth gave the girl a scornful stare before turning her attention back to the one with the ring.

Rin found her breath and took in great gasps. "You... I..." she began and then stopped. She searched for the right words. "I... don't know what to say."

"Yes?" Shippo offered hopefully.

With a nod, Rin threw her arms around Shippo's neck and hugged him. She began giggling uncontrollably while she cried.

The kitsune held her while he grinned. He bent his head to her neck and kissed the flesh there. He had a sudden desire to bite her and claim her right there. He disregarded that impulse, knowing it wasn't the right place. He placed another kiss there, with a promise for more later. Gently, he pulled away from her to look into her eyes.

She didn't give him much time before she engulfed him with a kiss. Her lips pressed firmly onto his as her tongue brushed his bottom lip. He hadn't even needed that much prompting as his tongue went to meet hers.

As the two kissed, the demons looked on curiously. None of them knew much about engagement rings or human weddings. They did know that Shippo had just given Rin something very important and special. But, that had been easy to figure out from her reaction to the ring.

Rin broke the kiss to brush her cheek against his. She whispered softly into his ear, "Tonight, I shall show you what I look like wearing nothing but this ring."

The kitsune felt himself tighten up with that promise and pulled away from her. "I believe I have found me a vixen, not a human," he said with a laugh.

Rin giggled, "We'll see how much of a vixen I am... later."

Tomo shook his head. "That was far more information then this spider needed to know," he said. He stood up from the table and helped Suki up. "I'm going to go ahead and take her... somewhere private. The four of you take care, and Shippo..." the spider demon dug in his pocket and threw a small squared package at the fox. When the fox caught it, Tomo finished, "Make sure you use that. She still has two years of school left and I plan on making sure she's there."

Shippo laughed when he realized what the small package was and showed it to Rin. The girl blushed a deep crimson colour. "That was far more information then this human needed to know," Rin retorted to her math teacher.

Tomo shrugged. "You scarred me, now I've scarred you. See you in class on Monday."

Edward shook his head. "Why don't the two of you go on ahead," he told the new couple as Tomo left. "I'll take care of the bill."

Shippo shook his head and handed Edward some money. "That should take care of my share and Tomo's. I'll get Tomo to pay me back later."

"I wouldn't count on it," the rat demon warned.

The kitsune shrugged. "It's not like I'm lacking. I'll check with you later," he said before turning to his new fiance. "Now, let's go figure out this whole vixen thing..."
