Chapter Nine: Confessions of the Heart

Rin sat in the large oak tree. After her talk with Tomo, the girl felt as if she needed to be alone to think. So, she had quietly slipped out of the halls and onto the campus. Without notice, she had climbed the large oak tree she and Hokochi had sat under many times.

Now, she sat on one of the many large branches. She knew the tree was old. It had been there since the school opened. While students weren't really allowed to climb the trees, she doubted anyone would notice her up there. After all, it wasn't as if she were a demon or anything.

She gazed at the clouds as she thought over that moment. Tomo had liked her. Perhaps even loved her.

She hadn't meant for that kiss to be anything but. He had surprised her with his return kiss. More importantly, the feeling he had behind the kiss. She had gotten lost in that kiss, for she almost felt as if she had been with Shippo. Only, the spider demon was much different then the kitsune, in taste, touch, everything.

But his passion for her had equalled the kitsune's almost to the point that Rin had forgotten where she was. She wondered how long he had held those feelings inside.

Rin felt pity for the spider demon. She knew that if he had come to her sooner, she would've at least given him a chance. She doubted anything would've come of it, but it would have been interesting.

She nearly laughed. There were a lot of "would've"s in those thoughts. It didn't matter how many would haves there were, it never would happen. She belonged to Shippo and Shippo belonged to her. More importantly, she loved Shippo more then she ever could love Tomo. And it wasn't due to lack of caring or anything. She had to admit, she did love the spider demon, to an extent. But, would that love have grown into something more?

She didn't care to find out because she had her love. Her only love. And she was happy in that love. Tomo understood that before she had kissed him. He knew his chances with her when they had had dinner Saturaday night.

Thoughts of Suki came back to her mind. That wretched girl. How naive could one be? Tomo hadn't even been trying to hide who he was. He had brought the girl into a demon restraunt that served demon food. Not to mention, did she even watch him as he played with that white spider?

Rin doubted the girl had paid attention to anything aside from Tomo's bod and hot looks. He was a darkly handsome man. His sultry voice was enough to charm even the coldest of hearts.

Rin admitted she had, at one time, felt an attraction to her teacher. She remembered when she had first started at the new demon school and met her new teachers....

"Rin," the principal said, bringing the small girl into the classroom, "I would like to introduce you to your new math teacher, Mr. Tomo."

The little girl looked up at the dark spider demon. At first, she cringed at him. She quickly turned and ran to her father, where she clung to his pants and hid behind him. "Daddy! It's... it's..." she couldn't finish her sentence for the fear in her voice.

Sesshomaru looked at the spider demon. He, too, had been shocked. But, unlike his daughter, he knew Naraku was gone... for good. "Rin, come out from behind me and meet your new teacher."

The little girl shook her head vehemently and buried her face in her father's pant leg.

"It is quite alright, Lord Sesshomaru," came a very familiar voice.

Rin shuddered. Dear god, he even sounded like Naraku! He had the same accent, same quietness... it was terrifying.

The girl knew Naraku was dead. Her parents had destroyed him. Yet, she still couldn't shake the feeling that her new math teacher was the demon reincarnated. Or worse.

She felt a warm, caring hand on her shoulder and dared a peek. Sharp, dark eyes stared back into hers. She gasped and took a step back, letting go of the dog demon. She tripped over her own feet and fell to the floor.

"Why do you fear me, little one?" the eyes asked her.

She looked up at the eyes. They reminded her so much of him.... Just as she was about to say that, she caught something in his eyes that Naraku lacked. Warmth. A good soul. Could it be? "Why are you a teacher?" she asked him instead.

To her surprise, she found that he had taken a seat on the floor by her. Her father had stepped out of the way and watched the two protectively. Comforted that her father was there, she picked herself up into a sitting position. She looked at the man curiously. Yes, he did look a lot like Naraku. But, he wasn't as dark, she realized. He seemed a lot kinder. And, he wore soft pastel colours, rather then the dark colours Naraku used. She could tell he was studying her. There was a very deep intelligence in his eyes that spoke of the centuries he had lived.

"I prefer teaching for it gives me a chance to mingle with the new generation," he told her, finally. "I don't just teach math, little human. I teach life as well. How to co exist with the human world."

She snorted, "You're gonna teach me how to live with my own kind?"

He laughed (a much more merry laugh then Naraku's), "I highly doubt you need lessons in that. However, I notice your father is a demon. Is it possible you live with demons? Perhaps I might just have to teach you to be among humans."

"If anyone knows how to be around humans, it's me," she assured him. "I am a human, after all. And I went to a human school before I came to this one."

He nodded. "Then perhaps we should just leave it at that. I shall teach you math and you shall teach the demons how to co exist with your kind."

"How do I do that?" she asked, tilting her head to the side.

"Easy. You already are," he told her.

She hadn't understood what he had meant, but she found that she could accept him. While he looked a lot like Naraku, he was good looking. And his personality made him fascinating. Rin knew her time with the demonic teacher would be interesting.

~*~*~

She smiled at the memory. She wouldn't know until years later what he had meant. Yes, in a way, she was teaching the demons how to co exist with humans. It was an odd lesson for her to teach, but what better lesson to be taught by her.

She sighed. Tomo had been in love with her. She wondered how long that had been the case. She knew, from her memory, that he had instantly cared about her.

She thought over the years that she had spent in his classroom. She knew now why he had always chosen to climb up the math ladder with her. He had wanted to make sure she got the best education possible. Plus, he liked the challenge.

Now, she saw a whole new meaning. He had been slowly falling in love with her. He had watched her grow from a gawky pre teen into a beautiful teenager. And now, she was going into womanhood, had already entered it.

At first, she wondered why it had taken so long for her to notice, but then she realized she had always known. It hadn't been that hard to figure out. He paid more attention to her then he had to any other student in the classroom. At first, it was because he cared for her, but as the years had progressed, as she had progressed, it had become because he loved her.

If only he had said something. That was what she had been waiting for. For him to confess his true feelings for her. That was why she went to him everyday after class. She knew she would never get any extra assignments from him. He didn't give extra assignments. Especially if he knew the person asking didn't need them.

All that time, she had wanted him to admit his feelings for her. To tell her that he cared, he loved. To show her how he felt for her.

And then what?

He was a spider demon. Rin had read up a lot on spider demons and knew their ways and mating rituals. Even if they had gotten together, he never would've claimed her. It wasn't his nature. Spider demons did not claim, for there was no reason to. And children? Rin shook her head.

A life with Tomo would never produce offspring. Spiders did not give birth the same way others did. It was a contest between the two spiders. They would fight until one died. Then, the winner would place their seed, or eggs, into the body of the dead spider. There, the offspring would grow and feast on the flesh of their dead parent. Once born, the small spider demons would fight one another until only one remained standing.

Rin shook her head. Since she started school, she had met only one spider half demon. He had been the product of a spider father and human mother. Rin had been sad for the hanyou, but he did not seem to care much. Who was he to care about a woman who died?

Rin weighed her thoughts on Tomo. Yes, she loved him. But, her love for him was not enough to have ever sustained a relationship. She wanted a family. Children of her own, a husband who would always be there for her. Tomo could not provide her wishes.

Confident, Rin dropped down from the tree.... and into Shippo's arms.

"Rin?" the kitsune asked, his mate suddenly falling from the tree he had been passing under. He had thought he smelled her scent coming from near the oak tree. He was glad he was right. "Where have you been? Your teachers have been worried..."

"I'm sorry," she apologized, "but, I needed to think."

That was when he had smelled it. The scent of another demon. He brought her a bit closer and took a better sniff. Tomo. He wrinkled his nose. "Why do you smell like that demon?" he demanded.

She sighed. He would find out sooner or later anyway. "I kissed him, Shippo."

The kitsune dropped her, stunned. He felt his heart breaking at her admission. She had done what?! "You mean, he kissed you," he stammered out, unable to catch his breath.

She shook her head. "No, Shippo. I kissed him," she told him, firmly. "But, I want you to hear me out."

"What? Why? You kissed another guy! You belong to me! Did you forget that detail? Who do you think you are kissing another man?!" he shouted at her.

"Just listen!"

"Fine!" he growled. He folded his arms over his chest and gave her a piercing glare. "I'll all ears. And it better be good, wench."

"First, don't call me that," she snapped. "We are not in the Feudal Era anymore, nor are we in any other time in history. I will not be treated disrespectfully."

She gave a frustrated sigh as she said in a calmer voice, "I did it because I needed to know the truth. For years, I thought there was more to it then he was letting on. The only way I could get him to open up was to surprise him. Do something that would take him off balance and make him drop his guard. I have tried everything, and nothing has worked. That kiss was meant to be just a small touch of the lips. That was all. But, then I realized that he really did have feelings for me."

"He returned your kiss, so you just kept kissing him," Shippo guessed. He gave a disgusted snarl. "I can't believe you would do this, Rin. Not only have you just slapped me across the face, but you did it with my friend. Tomo and I have been friends for years! Not only that, but you are my mate! You are my mate, Rin! You are supposed to love me and honour me. Be true only to me. You kissed another man."

She leaned back, her own hands folded across her chest. "I never made any vows," she retorted.

"We CLAIMED each other! Doesn't that mean anything to you?" he demanded.

She knew he was hurt. She could see it and feel it all over him. She sighed as she bowed her head. "Shippo," she whispered, "try to understand what I am saying. Yes, I kissed him. I refuse to deny it. And I don't regret it. Because, if anything, it taught me something about myself that I did not know before."

She looked up, meeting his blue orbs. "And that is the fact that there is only one man who could ever be for me," she told him. "You are that man, Shippo. No one else."

The kitsune shook his head. "I've never needed any proof to tell me that. I knew we would be together. I knew there would never be another..."

"How many women have you slept with?!" she sneered. "How many women have you kissed and you've made love to? How many women have you gotten all sweaty with? Don't lie to me and tell me you were a virgin in our bed. I know better. No virgin man would know how to do the things you did Saturaday night. Sex ed taught me that!"

"That's not the point, Rin!"

"Yes, it is! You've had centuries to decide who is right for you, Shippo," she cried. "You've had more then enough time to taste this, or try that. It's not like I slept with him. We shared a kiss. That was it! It went no further and it will go no further."

"How can I trust that? Yes, I've been with women before. I have slept with women in the past, but once I was with you, there was no other for me. The thought did not even cross my mind," he waved a hand at her and turned to leave, fed up with the whole discussion.

She stood there for a moment and watched as he started to walk away. Then, in a voice he could barely hear, she whispered, "I wonder what would have happened if Kagome had decided she wanted to be with you and not Lord Sesshomaru."

That stopped him in his tracks. The fox demon pivoted on his foot to look at her, his eyes widened. She nearly laughed at the irony as she shook her head. "Everyone has their fantasies, Shippo. I know you well enough, I know who your fantasies revolve around. It is not wrong to be interested in someone else and still love the mate you have claimed for your own."

"Do you really believe I would ever act on any thoughts towards Kagome?" he asked, not believing what he was hearing. Had his mate gone insane?

She shook her head, but continued, "You have had over five hundred years to experience life, Shippo. To taste, touch, and smell the world around you. To know everything there is to know and to love every moment of it. For you, it is simple, for you have already experienced everything."

He tilted his head. "What do you want, Rin?" he asked. Then, he walked up to her and took her hands into his. It hurt him to speak the words he was about to say, but it seemed it was what she wanted, "If you wish to date Tomo for a while, I won't stand in your way. You cannot die as long as I am alive, so you need not fear death nor old age. You can be with him until your heart is content, but just remember to come back to me..."

She shook her head and leaned her forehead against his chest. "That is not what I want," she whispered, tears falling from her eyes.

"Then, talk to me, Rin. Tell me what you do want. I need to know so that I know where to go from here," he spoke softly, trying not to let his voice break with the tears in his throat.

"I want you, Shippo. Even when I kissed him, you were all I thought about," she confessed. "Perhaps at one time I would have desired Tomo, but now... why would I desire anyone else when I have found the man of my dreams? You are the one for me. The only one for me. There is no one else and there never will be."

He sighed and gently picked her head up with his finger on her chin. "Then why did you want to hurt me like this? Didn't you know this would kill me inside?" his eyes pleaded with her.

Her tears fell freely, unchecked, untouched. "It wasn't a matter of wanting to hurt you. I would never purposely hurt you like that. I love you, Shippo. Like I told you, I did it because I needed to know the truth," she answered.

"This is the truth," he growled, before he bent his head down and kissed her.

He could taste Tomo on her, in her mouth. He willed the other demon away as he deepened his kiss. He wanted to taste her, and only her. He wanted her to taste him, to know he was all she would ever need. Or want. He brandished his tongue along hers.

She moaned softly in his mouth and he knew, in that, and her return kiss, that she was still his. He realized then as well, he had never lost her to begin with. She had told the truth. The kiss she had shared with Tomo had been nothing more. It couldn't be anything more. Shippo had her heart and her soul. She would never belong to another.

In that moment, he forgave her for kissing the spider demon. And she knew as well, she was right where she belonged.

The spider demon watched from his classroom window at the kitsune and the human. He had seen them argue and, while he couldn't hear what they were saying, he knew they were arguing about him. His heart went out to the human girl. The last thing he wanted was for her to be hurt.

Had he known she was going to kiss him, he would've stopped her. Or, at least prepared himself. As it had been, he had been so shocked by the kiss that he had let his guard down. He had tasted the girl that could have been his.

He watched as Shippo started to walk away before turning back suddenly to Rin. He figured they were probably breaking up, if her tears were anything to go by. Then the kitsune had kissed her and Tomo knew it was over. The spider demon bowed his head respectfully and turned from the window.

Rin was where she belonged. While Tomo would have been happy to take her into his arms, he knew such a relationship was doomed for failure. He would have comforted her for as long as she needed and then she would've gone back to the kitsune. It was inevitable. The mark on her neck clearly stated who she belonged to. Who she would always belong to.

The spider demon was happy for her.
