Chapter 3

“What is she still doing here?” Inu-Yasha demanded about Damasu.

“She is going to travel with us, we are headed in the same direction anyways,” replied Kagome nonchalantly, packing her giant yellow bag. She looked up to Inu-Yasha who was standing over her and gasped. “Your wound, it’s still bleeding!” and indeed it was. Dried blood caked on his haori with fresh blood trickling over it.

“Feh, it doesn’t hurt” he said, not noticing Kagome reaching a hand to his shoulder, “DAMN IT! Why the fuck did you touch it wench?!” he yelled, his face contorted with pain.

“Don’t be so stubborn, let me clean the cuts. We can’t travel today with that injury anyways; Kirara can’t carry me as well as Sango and Miroku.”

“I could carry you.” The group turned to Damasu “my tiger form is just as fast as your cat-demon, I could even carry Inu-Yasha if you’d like.”

“Like hell I’d do that, I would rather die first” Inu-Yasha snarled at her.

“That can be arranged” he was stopped by the cold glare coming from Damasu, it reminded him of Sesshomaru.

“Do what you want, see if I care” Inu-Yasha stomped off towards the stream to clean off the dried blood.

“Wait,” called Damasu, “that wound won’t heal, it’ll get infected.”

“Well what do you suppose I do?” asked Inu-Yasha sarcastically.”

“With that tone of voice, nothing” she said smugly knowing she had the upper hand. Inu-Yasha growled in reply.

“Inu-Yasha” warned Kagome. He didn’t answer but flattened his ears.

Damasu watched the exchange with amusement. ‘Must be that “sit” power’ “So do you want my help or not?”

“I don’t need help from the likes of you, I heal faster than you tiger demons anyway, you must have fought weaker demons before to assume that your power is so great. We’ve wasted enough daylight on this matter, if you can carry the wench then do it.”

Damasu and Kagome exchanged amused looks before the demon transformed.

Kagome found that riding the tiger was very different from riding on Kirara. Kirara flew with her flaming tail and legs, motionless in the sky. Damasu ran on the ground like a normal tiger, it took a while for Kagome to get used to the gait but soon she was riding as if she had ridden tigers all her life. Damasu was just as fast as Kirara but she ran with such ease, Kagome suspected that this speed was trivial for the demon. “You’re so fast in this form, why do you fight in your human form?”

“My form trades power for speed. I am faster but I only fight in this form if my opponent is faster than my human form. In this form my strength is reduced to that of a lesser demon, even weaker than your Inu-Yasha” Damasu noticed Kagome hiding a grin at that statement. “The jewel shards help a bit. It increases my speed slightly and gives power to my claws. In my human form I have the ability to stop the cauterizing of the injuries I inflict, like I did to Inu-Yasha. It’s a very powerful attack and it takes a lot out of me, I probably won’t be able to use it again for at least a week or so.”

“Wow, so, if you can only use it spread out like that then why did you use it on Inu-Yasha?”

“I mistook him for Naraku because of the scent on him. I have better eyesight than dog-demons but no youkai can match their sense of smell. Mine is about average where demons are concerned.”

“That makes sense” Kagome looked up to Kirara and searched the area for the hanyou “where’s Inu-Yasha?” Damasu came to a halt growling.

“The idiot probably passed out from blood loss” she lifted her head to sniff the air “he’s not far behind. Hey monk, demon slayer, I need to do some dog rescue work, we’ll catch up to you guys tonight when you make camp.”

“Ok, hurry back” called Sango.

“Will do, if the dumb dog isn’t dead yet” she turned around and took off so fast that Kagome yelped and dug her fingers in the fur to hold on.

‘She sounds like Kouga when she mentions Inu-Yasha. Kouga says those things because he’s in love with me and is jealous with Inu-Yasha. I wonder what Damasu’s reason is…’ Sooner than she thought possible, they were at Inu-Yasha who collapsed close to their camp from the night before. “Inu-Yasha!” she dropped off of Damasu’s back and ran to the unconscious hanyou. He was lying in a pool of his own blood. She could see tracks of animals that probably fled with their presence. True to Damasu’s words earlier, the wound was gaping and had a sickly tinge to it, not to mention the bites from what looked like a small fox. “Inu-Yasha wake up!” Kagome cried holding his head in her lap. She looked to their new companion with tears in her eyes “can’t you help him? You said you could before.”

Damasu, still in her animal form, looked at the scene solemnly. “I can heal the damage from my own claws, but as for everything else that got to him, I can’t do anything about it.”

Kagome nodded “please, just help him. He’s lost too much blood, his breathing is slowing down.” Tears streamed down her cheeks and dripped on the hanyou.

Damasu, hating to see Kagome cry, approached the duo. “Hold him down, this is going to hurt and I don’t want him swinging wildly with those claws of his” she instructed as she stepped closer. She lowered her head to his injury and with her fangs, gripped both sides of his flesh. She bit down, closing the gap. Immediately he woke up with a surprised shout of mixed shock and pain.

“What the hell wench, letting her attack me like that?!” he shouted at Kagome with an angry glare. Seeing the tears in her eyes made him feel like an ass. By that time, Damasu had released his shoulder and was calmly licking her paw like a common house cat.

“You’re welcome” was all she said before walking to the stream to wash out her mouth. “I hate the taste of dog” she said softly so that only Inu-Yasha could hear her.

“Why that-“

“Inu-Yasha…” Kagome said with a tone that made him cringe “Sit” *Fwump* She got up and looked at him coolly “she just saved your life, if you didn’t notice, she healed your wound.” Turning her back to him she headed in the direction that Damasu went.

Inu-Yasha snorted ‘like hell she healed me, she just gave me bite marks to boot’ he shoved aside his haori to assess the damage, but all he could see was a few lines where the wounds were and silver marks where her teeth had been. ‘Damn, now Kagome’ll want me to apologize and say thank you’ his ears lowered and he growled at the thought.

Kagome watched the feline lap up the water, smiling at the disgusted look on her face. “I think the blood is gone” she said hiding her smile with her hand.

“Have you ever tasted dog blood? Need I remind you that I am a cat” she flicked her tail in emphasis. With a shake she went back to her human from, not noticing Kagome’s look of fascination.

“What does it feel like when you shift forms like that?”

“Hmm…how to describe it” Damasu stood up and reached to put a hand on her chin “imagine you are under a cold waterfall, but the nice kind of cold you enjoy on a hot day. That’s what it feels like at first.”

“And after that?”

Damasu walked over to Kagome in a way that made the young girl’s heart catch in her throat. “Wh-what are you doing?” she asked nervously.

“The only way I can tell you, is to show you…” Damasu circled behind the miko “you feel tingles down your spine” she gently grazed her claws down the back of Kagome’s neck.

“K, tingles down the spine, got that.”

“Then a fire starts in your stomach” she reached around resting her hands just under the bow of Kagome’s uniform.

“Mhmm” Kagome’s eyes fluttered shut.

“And it just spreads from there to the tips of your fingers and toes” she ran her hands up Kagome’s sides to her shoulders and let her claws slowly trace a line down Kagome’s arms. Kagome shuddered, turned around and was startled by the proximity of the youkai. Her gaze went from glowing eyes to what suddenly became tantalizing lips. Her own parted and she leaned closer…
