Chapter 3-Acceptance

“For reasons I care not to understand, what are you doing here half-breed?”

InuYasha scowled as he glanced at his brother, Sesshoumaru. The older youkai looked positively bored sitting on the chair at the head of the well decorated dining table. Idly drumming his claws against the wooden surface of the pristine table, InuYasha sighed.

“I don't care if you approve or not, but the flea said I should inform you….” He started, looking at Sesshoumaru to try and read his expression. As stoic as ever, Sesshoumaru did not even bother to glance at InuYasha while he spoke. Instead, he took a peculiar interest in cleaning imaginary dust off the fur that hung around his shoulder.

“And what insignificant news do you bring me?” Sesshoumaru asked coldly…without looking up from his task.

“Feh! This was fucking pointless, I knew I shouldn't have come.” InuYasha stated loudly, standing up abruptly and successfully sliding the chair back a few feet. Grabbing Tetsusaiga and placing it in the red sash around his waist, he started out the dining hall, stomping all the way.

“InuYasha…wait.”

Slowly turning around, InuYasha growled at Sesshoumaru. Not that the latter actually paid attention to InuYasha's growl…

“Come here. What is it you came to say?” Sesshoumaru asked, slowly rising from his seat in a very royal fashion. InuYasha rolled his eyes, but turned around, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning heavily against the doorframe.

“I've decided to take a mate.”

For a split second, Sesshoumaru's eyes flared wide, catching InuYasha's high interest. “What?”

He coughed, but grinned. “I've decided to take a meh-ate

“And who is the unfortunate woman that must be tied down to you forever?” Sesshoumaru continued to question, walking across the room with a flourish until he was less than a foot away from the hanyou. He wrinkled his nose. “Tell me you haven't brainwashed the Miko…”

InuYasha snorted. “Feh! I'll have you know, she's already accepted me. She said she wanted to marry me during Miroku and Sango's wedding.”

“`marrying' and `mating' are two different things InuYasha. Humans don't mate. How do you know the Miko wants to mate you?”

“I'm taking her as my mate.” InuYasha said tightly, narrowing his fierce golden eyes at his brother. “I came here to tell you and that's done. Now I'm leaving.”

“Wait.” Sesshoumaru's arm reached out to grab InuYasha by the back of his haori, pulling him back slightly. “You cannot take her as your mate yet.” He said quietly.

“Why the hell not?”

The elder sighed. “I see you are still as ignorant as ever. Did you ever bother to read Father's testament?”

That caught InuYasha's attention. “What testament?”

“The one he left before he died. I'm sure Myouga has a copy somewhere.” Sesshoumaru began to walk away from InuYasha, heading towards his `office'.

“So what does it have to do with me claiming Kagome?”

The youkai sighed. “Do you wish to rule Father's lands?”

Fuck no.”

“Then do not claim the Miko yet. Father states the one who takes a mate first is the ruler of his lands.”

“Feh! You can keep the lands for all I care. I just want Kagome.”

“You cannot go against Father's wishes you imbecile.” Sesshoumaru glanced at InuYasha, who thought it was the first time during his visit his brother looked at him in the eye. “I am in the midst of claiming a mate of my own. Wait until I take her and then you can go ahead and defile your Miko.”

InuYasha laughed. “Someone's actually willing to stay with you?”

“Does it surprise you?”

“Yeah, actually. Does she have a stick shoved up her ass to?”

Sesshoumaru growled slightly. “Do not speak vilely against my intended.”

“Who is your intended?”

“Kagura” He said simply.

Ugh…Naraku's incarnation `Kagura'?”

Sesshoumaru nodded.

“That's like mating Naraku.”

“Stop being a moron, InuYasha. Now get out before your scent permanently rubs off in my house.”

“Bastard.” The hanyou growled, walking away from his brother who jerked his head at Jaken---the toad that always followed him around---in a sign of `get him out'.

“Oh by the way, InuYasha, you have my approval in your choice of mate, though I know not what the Miko sees in you. However, her powers are…respectable.”

Stopping just before he was out of the castle, InuYasha couldn't grasp what Sesshoumaru had just said. He had called Kagome `respectable'…a monumental compliment from the cold youkai. “Feh! Your mate is okay to.” He said quietly, just enough for Sesshoumaru to hear him.

Without another word, InuYasha slipped out of the castle and began his run back home.

`Home' He thought with a smile. He had a home to go to and she would be waiting there. Jumping from tree to tree in a blur, InuYasha snorted. `That wench better have missed me.'

He arrived at the village much later than he had anticipated. Somewhere deep down, InuYasha had hoped he could see Kagome before she went to sleep. But alas, there he was, once again on Kaede's roof hearing Kagome's soft breathing. He looked at the delicate flower he held in his hands.

Soft petals adorned the green stem, narrow white petals with a dash of maroon color running along the middle of each petal. The maroon lines came together in the middle, forming around the petals a very unique and beautiful design. It looked so delicate, so beautiful, and it smelled delicious.

`Just like her.' InuYasha sighed, thinking for the thousandth time if he should present the flower to Kagome or not. In the week that followed after Miroku and Sango's wedding, not much between them had changed. However, he did brush his hand against hers when she was picking herbs. He even held her hand when he was leading her back to the village. And although he was still shy, he had kissed her a few times: just a small, innocent peck on her soft lips.

Starring at the moon, which was almost completely covered by dark clouds, InuYasha sighed, crossing his arms behind his neck after placing the flower besides him. Arguing with himself for at least two hours, he stopped when he ran out of things to argue about with himself. Mustering up all his courage, he jumped down from the roof and entered Kaede's hut. And there she was, in her sleeping bag with Shippo curled near her chest. Kaede slept on the other side of the hut, on her futon, snoring slightly.

She laid on her side, black hair split over her shoulder and with her hand near her face, almost hugging the pillow she had from her time. Hunkering down besides her, he caressed her face with a gentle claw, touching her nose and her lips. “I got this for you, Kagome.” He muttered, placing the flower in the space between her hand and face.

He snorted slightly when she made no move to bring it closer and made no move to roll towards him. Leaning down, he planted a soft kiss on her cheek. “I love you.” He whispered in to her ear and she smiled just a tad. Rolling his eyes, he stood up and headed to the nearest tree.

His heart had been thundering in his ears the whole time and without a second thought, he closed his eyes and drifted in to a steady and much-deserved sleep.

“InuYasha”

That voice sounded awfully familiar. Squeezing his eyes closed further, he refused to acknowledge the voice. He felt a weight on his chest, something soft against his shoulder and neck.

What was it?

It was so soft. It curled against him and sighed happily. He was still half dreaming, but his eyes snapped open when the sweetest scent drifted in to his nose. “K-Kagome?”

“Mmm?”

Looking around, he realized he was still up in the tree and it was still dark. “H-How'd you get up here?”

“I climbed.” She mumbled sleepily, shifting to place her head higher on his shoulder. Nestled between his legs, he blinked as he wrapped his arms around her, shielding her from the cool wind.

“You could have fallen.”

“I didn't.”

“But you could have.”

Shh! InuYasha…I loved your flower.”

He felt his cheeks burst in heat. “Wh-What flower?”

She giggled. “The one you left silly. Or am I to assume someone else left it on my pillow?”

“Feh!”

“Exactly. So thank you, it was beautiful.”

“Wh-Where is it?” He asked without looking at her, instead looking straight ahead. `Did she leave it?'

“In my hair” She said without looking up at him either, instead snuggling herself closer. “I missed you, you know. I missed sleeping with you here.”

He snorted softly. “You missed sleeping in trees?”

She nodded. “Absolutely. You're very comfy you know. I love it here.”

“Feh…” He closed his eyes again, leaning his head back against the bark.

“Did you miss me?”

He opened one eye to stare at her face, glowing with hope he'd say `yes'. “Maybe.”

“Oh?”

He sighed, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “Of course I missed you, wench.”

She smiled widely, leaning up to give him a quick peck on the lips. “What did Sesshoumaru say?”

“Nothing special. Just stupid junk.”

“What kind of `junk'?”

“I'll tell you in the morning, wench, I'm tired. Let me sleep.”

“Okay.” She agreed easily enough. “Goodnight, InuYasha.”

“`Nigh…” He mumbled, holding her tighter and drifting off in to a very comfortable sleep.

“Oi!” InuYasha growled as he slapped his nose with his open palm, successfully squashing the flea-youkai who sucked his blood. Squeezing Myouga between his index finger and thumb, he waited until the youkai's eyes began popping out of their sockets to let go. “Why the fuck did you never tell me my father left behind a testament?”

“I-I n-never thought y-you'd be interested!” Myouga replied, hissing when then hanyou squeezed harder. Seconds later, he was released and `popped' himself back to his normal size, coughing and jumping on InuYasha's shoulder. “I'm sorry sire, the Great Dog-Youkai's testament only states what should happen to his lands, his home, and his swords.”

“Feh! Why didn't you tell me sooner?”

“I thought you felt no want towards your father's land.” Myouga said, scratching his head. He shook his head and sighed. “Why do you ask about it?”

“If I take a mate before Sesshoumaru, I become the new Lord of the lands right?”

The flea coughed. “Yep! Oh this is marvelous! Are you going to take Kagome-sama to live in the castle?”

InuYasha snorted. “No! I don't want the lands or that damn castle. I just want Kagome.”

“Well my Lord, you can take Kagome-sama as your mate and then write a document that states Lord Sesshoumaru as the permanent Lord of your father's land. Both you and Kagome-sama must sign it…that would void your father's testament.”

“Any piece of paper?”

Myouga nodded. “So long as it bears your seal and the signatures of you and your Lady.”

InuYasha scratched his chin, nodding slowly. “Uh-huh…fine, that sounds easy enough. Now beat it flea.” He said, flickering Myouga off his shoulder.

Running back to the village, he grinned when he saw Kagome heading out of Kaede's hut with Shippo on her shoulder. “Oi, Kagome, I gotta talk to you!” Taking a little time to appreciate the way the afternoon sun made Kagome glow. Her hair looked glossier than usual, picked up in to a ponytail with the flower he presented her earlier nestled against the top side of the ponytail.

He smiled, grabbed her arm and began tugging her away. Turning his attention to Shippo, he jerked his head to the side. “Beat it, runt.”

“You're so mean! Kagome, can I stay?” Shippo yelled, sticking his tongue out at the hanyou.

“Feh! No, this is private. Kagome'll give you some candy later, if she still has any.”

Eyes widening, Shippo smiled happily before jumping off Kagome's shoulder and running away. “Candy!”

“What is this all about, InuYasha?” Kagome asked, not referring to the fact the hanyou was dragging her away towards Goshinboku.

“You said you wanted to marry me, right?”

She blushed.

“And I wanna marry you to, wench. But…”

`Oh no…there's always a `but' nowadays.' Kagome made a face, tugging on the long sleeve of her navy blue shirt to cover her entire hand. “But?”

“Youkai don't just `marry' Kagome, we take mates. Being my mate, I…” He swallowed hard, but sighed. “I'd have to mark you, so you can age the way I do a-and you'd be with me forever. Centuries.”

A curious light came in to her brown gaze. “Centuries?”

He nodded.

“Does that mean I might see my family again?”

He shrugged. “I guess.”

She smiled, a brilliant sight as far as he was concerned. “That's great!” She yelled, hugging him and showering his face with butterfly kisses. “I love you!”

“K-Kagome, do you understand what I'm telling you?”

“Yep! Don't worry, InuYasha, there's no one else I'd rather spend forever with than you.”

“A-Alright then…” He said, wrinkling his nose when Kagome did not cease her kissing-attack. “Okay, wench, that's enough.”

She giggled. “So how do you mark me?”

He shrugged again, cheeks tinged with pink. “I'd just have to bite you.”

Bite me?” She giggled. “Where?”

“Um…where your body wants me to, basically.” He said, shifting his weight uncomfortably.

“And where is that?”

He twitched his ears. “I dunno.”

That was a pure lie. He sighed. Of course he knew, he'd known where to mark her after the first few days of traveling with her. The one spot on her body that pulsed, ebbed a lure towards him. He had even felt it when he carried her around on his back.

“Are you lying to me?” She asked suspiciously, cornering him against Goshinboku.

He shrugged.

“Tell me! Where do I get marked?”

He sighed. “C'mere, Kagome.” He opened his arms for her, inviting her for his hug. As soon as she entered his embrace, he slowly reached for her shirt, pulling it up slightly against her back and touching her waistline, just before her rear began. “Right there.”

Oh…?”

He grinned. “Does it surprise you?”

“A little.” She admitted, blushing slightly. “Why there?”

He shrugged. “Its your body…you tell me.”

She suddenly pushed him back against Goshinboku, hands pushing against his chest. “When are you going to mark me?”

“I-I…” He blushed at Kagome's sudden attitude. She had never been so straight forward with him and he had to admit, he kind of liked it. “What's wrong with you, wench?”

“What do you mean?”

“You're so…blunt all of a sudden.”

“Oh…I'm not sure. I've had an epiphany!”

He rolled his eyes. She pushed him harder.

“When will you mark me?”

“After I court you.”

“Like…dating?”

“Feh! Not like `dating'…courting in youkai terms means for a period of time, I'll be announcing you as my intended. `Course, you get to choose whether you accept me or not.” He finished quietly.

“Oh InuYasha! Of course I'll accept you…I've always loved you, remember?”

He snorted, but smiled: a small quirk at the end of his lips. “Good.”

“And you love me?”

“That's a stupid question.” He retorted, crossing his arms over his chest. “Of course I love you.”

That over brilliant smile of hers adored her pretty face and suddenly, she was hugging him again. He didn't complain of course, rather…wrapped his arms around her and leaned down to plant a very passionate and deep kiss. Holding her against his body, against his heart, his lips danced over hers softly, and in a wholly provocative way that made Kagome moan softly against him.

Wrapped up in the essence of the miko he held against him, InuYasha let himself be carried away by the beauty of the moment. He delved his tongue in to her mouth, enticing her further, making her knees buckle beneath her. He groaned when her hand reached up to gently rub his right ear in her soft hand.

Not only had Kagome accepted him as her fiancé…she'd also accepted him as a mate. He'd found so much in her…the rare creature that he held in his arms. One such as Kagome probably came around once a life time and he knew he was the luckiest man on Earth to have been able to capture her affections: her heart and soul.

She sighed against him. He'd never felt closer to home than when he was by her side…
