Chapter 2: Back Home

As the sun rose, Miroku was the first to wake. He stood up, eyeing Kagome and Inuyasha in the corner. Kagome was lying on the mattress, and Inuyasha was sitting with his back to the wall at her side.

Miroku smirked knowingly as he noticed Inuyasha's hand on her shoulder. He turned around and saw Sango lying down with Kiara and Shippou in her arms and he smiled once more.

Turning back to Kagome, his smile was twisted into a frown as he noticed the edges of a bruise showing underneath her hair. He leaned down gently to push it back and see the bruise, but he was caught by the wrist.

Looking up, startled, he saw Inuyasha staring at him. Inuyasha stood slowly, not releasing the monk's wrist, and he dragged him outside silently.

"Look," Inuyasha began impatiently. "I don't want you saying anything to Kagome about her bruises. I can't tell you how she got them, either, that's her job." Miroku's eyes filled with concern, confusion, and lastly, lust.

`Mmm, when people get upset, they get more vulnerable as they search constantly for love and comfort,' Miroku was snapped out of his thoughts by two smacks on his head. Turning around, he saw a furious Inuyasha and Sango glaring at him.

"You perverted monk!" Sango yelled.

"You were thinking about taking advantage of her depression, weren't you?" Inuyasha furiously observed.

"Well, it's only fair to warn you. If you try anything at all with Kagome, I swear, your head will somehow find it's way off of your neck, do you underst-" but he was interrupted by a small and sleepy voice.

"What's going on you guys, it's too early to be arguing already," The voice was Kagome's. Everyone spun around, wide-eyed at the girl peering out the door. Sensing something was wrong, Kagome tried to stand and go help settle the argument. Kagome had been on her feet no longer than a minute, when she instantly tumbled back down.

Inuyasha ran to her side, angry at himself for waking her up with his yelling. His voice shaky and full of worry, he began to speak.

"Kagome, don't try to stand yet. Let me help you back to your bed, you shouldn't be up and about for a day or two." Kagome and the others gasped in surprise at Inuyasha's gentleness.

`What's going on here? Inuyasha is actually showing concern for me? Since when did he care more about my well being than he did about the search for the Shikon no Tama?' Kagome's thoughts were uneasy; making her heart beat increase rapidly.

Inuyasha's dog ears picked the increased beating up immediately, and he pressed his hand to her forehead. In an instant, he had lifted Kagome carefully into his arms and spun around, starting off towards the well.

`I've never felt a temperature so hot! I have to get her back to her time immediately! She needs more medical care than we can give her here.' Inuyasha thought worriedly. Kagome didn't resist right away, she was too shocked at being carried in this style by Inuyasha. Once she realized where he was heading, she began to struggle.

"Inuyasha! Put me down! I can't go back!" She pleaded. Inuyasha slowed his running until he was completely stopped, staring at the girl confusedly.

"Why can't you go back Kagome?" He questioned. She was a little surprised at his question, but took no time in explaining it to him.

"Inuyasha, you jerk! You think I'm perfectly ok with returning back into danger? I don't ever want to go back again! I can't, not after..." Her complaints were halted as she bit her lip and shut her eyes, trying to hold back tears.

Inuyasha was instantly melted by her complaints. He sat down right where he was, and cradled her in his arms. Kagome opened her eyes confusedly, and instantly the tears poured out of her eyes when she saw the look on his face.

`That look; it's so full of concern and love. What's going on?' Kagome thought confusedly. She was even more confused when she felt a gentle touch on her cheeks, as he wiped away her tears.

"Kagome, I'm sorry," he began. "I had forgotten what you must feel like right now. But I do hope you realize that you will always be safe with me, no matter what. I care about you more than I have ever cared about anyone, and I promise that I will take care of you." His voice was calm and gentle, and his eyes clearly portrayed that he meant everything he had said. Kagome was beside herself with surprise.

`Did Inuyasha just say he has feelings for me? What did he say again...that he cares more about me than he's ever cared about anyone else, right? So, if you include Kikyo, since he loved her, then...oh my god! Could Inuyasha be...in love with me?' As Kagome tried to sort things out in her head, she wasn't paying attention to everything else that was happening.

Inuyasha had lifted her from the ground again, and had moved to sit against a tree, with Kagome in his lap. With one hand he held her in his arms, treasuring the warmth of her in his arms.

With his free hand, he stroked her hair, playing with it softly. Kagome looked up from her thoughts, only to blush bright red.

`He's only, like, 2 inches away from my face! Oh my god!' Kagome's heart raced as her blush deepened and she closed her eyes nervously.

`I've waited for so long for this moment...to finally hold her in my arms. Kagome, my Kagome,' Inuyasha thought. He leaned down slowly, and lightly brushed his lips against hers. Kagome's eyes shot open as she felt excitement rush through her body.

`Inuyasha, he's, kissing me!' Kagome thought, `I, I, can't believe it!' Inuyasha drew back slowly and whispered in her ear.

"Kagome, I love you." Kagome gasped with shock and looked up into his eyes. He leaned down and kissed her again, much more boldly than before.

As his lips met hers once more, Kagome closed her eyes and slowly opened her lips to his tongue, which had been tracing her lips lightly, asking for permission to enter.

As the kiss continued, Kagome's thoughts raced and she pulled back from him slightly, needing to tell him how she felt.

"Inuyasha, I love you too, I think I have from the moment we met. There will never be anyone but you in my life." She blurted out, before tears came to her eyes once more. Inuyasha was in shock.

"Kagome? Why are you crying? Did I do something wrong?" He asked confusedly. Kagome shook her head lightly as the tears ran down her cheeks.

"No, Inuyasha, I'm just so happy I could burst." She mumbled through her sobs. Inuyasha smiled and hugged her to his chest, rubbing her back comfortingly.

"Well, before you burst, we better get you back to your time, you're still injured and you still have a high fever," Inuyasha laughed. He stood carefully, making sure to be as gentle as he could with her injured body.

He smiled softly as he felt a soft tug on his haori and looked down at Kagome. She had fallen asleep once more, clinging onto his haori as if afraid it was a dream and he wouldn't be there when she awoke.

"I promise, Kagome, I'll always be here, always," he whispered softly as he reached the well. Tightening his grip around Kagome he climbed to the edge and jumped in, letting the darkness envelop them.
