Chapter 3: The Nightmare
Inuyasha smiled as he watched over Kagome, now sleeping soundly in her bed. She had just returned from the doctor in her time, and he had given her some medicine that would make her better.
`My Kagome, finally, mine,' Inuyasha thought to himself happily. He looked up quickly as he heard her whimper softly. She had a concentrated look on her face, and she was curled up tightly. He quickly strode over to her, and sat down on the edge of the bed.
"Kagome? Kagome?" he whispered worriedly. When he got no response he pulled his legs up and sat cross-legged, pulling the whimpering girl into his lap.
"Kagome? Kagome?" he repeated, louder this time. She stirred lightly, but still would not wake.
"Inuyasha, help me, don't let him get me again," she mumbled nervously in her sleep. He looked down, startled and saw a tear slip out of her eye as she grabbed onto his haori.
He reached down and shook her, trying to wake her from her nightmare. He sighed and smiled with relief when her eyes slowly opened, but his smile quickly turned into a frown as she began to sob uncontrollably.
"Kagome, are you alright? Kagome, shh, calm down, it's ok, I'm here, shh," Inuyasha whispered reassuringly. He rubbed her back in slow circles, just like his mother used to do for him.
"Oh, Inuyasha, I was so scared, he was there again, the whole thing happened over, but," Kagome stumbled over the words as her sobs continued, cutting her off.
"But what? Tell me please, but what?" Inuyasha whispered comfortingly.
"But this time, he killed you," she sobbed as she clung to him desperately. Inuyasha couldn't help but smile inside, happy that he meant this much to her.
He pulled her back from him slightly, and tilted her chin upwards to look in her eyes. He gently wiped away her tears and leaned down, kissing her lovingly.
"I'm not going to die anytime soon, don't worry," he reassured her. She reached up and caressed his cheek, smiling softly.
"I love you, Inuyasha," she whispered, "thank you." Inuyasha smiled and leaned into her hand, whispering back lightly,
"I love you too, Kagome." She ran her hand up onto one of his ears and rubbed it softly. Inuyasha immediately closed his eyes and a soft rumble was heard from his chest. Kagome giggled,
"So, Inuyasha, why didn't you tell me you liked people playing with your ears?"
"Because, I don't. Only you," he mumbled in response, his eyes still closed happily. Kagome gently pulled herself out of his lap and stood, stretching before collapsing to the ground once more in pain.
Inuyasha was immediately by her side, picking her up and placing her back on her bed. He gently moved her hair off her shoulders, and studied the bruise on her neck.
After identifying that it was not the problem, he moved to her legs and stopped as he saw one particularly nasty bruise on her inner left thigh. He ran his claws over it lightly, watching as Kagome winced in pain. He frowned, trying not to imagine what the man could've done to hurt her there.
"I-inuyasha?" Inuyasha looked up from his thoughts, and gave her a questioning look.
"There's a thing in my desk drawer that could help. Look in that bottom drawer, there, and there should be a small red box." Nodding, Inuyasha went over and pulled it out, handing it to Kagome.
He watched as she removed a flesh-colored stretchy sort of material. She unrolled it and slowly wrapped it around her leg.
When she finished, she reached inside the box once more and grabbed a white bottle, opening it and taking two pills out before swallowing them.
Inuyasha had no clue what she was doing, but she seemed confident about it so he didn't interfere. When she started to stand however, he was by her side immediately, holding her arm to assist her.
"I'm ok, just give me a few minutes, Inuyasha, and I'll be ready to return to the feudal era." She said as she hobbled carefully around her room, tossing things into her bag. Inuyasha reached out and put his hand on the bag, stopping her.
"Um, Kagome, is there anything you wanna do in your time before we go back?" He asked embarrassedly. He was immediately rewarded by Kagome's wide smile.
"Do you mean it?" She asked hopefully. When Inuyasha nodded, blushing, she threw her arms around him and dropped her bag.
"Ok, then! Let's go shopping!" She exclaimed excitedly. Inuyasha didn't know what this "shop-ping" was, but it was making his Kagome happy.
`And that's all that really matters, after all,' he thought.

"Oh, come on, Inuyasha!" Kagome pleaded, exasperated. Inuyasha stood there, stubbornly refusing to let go of her hand and let her drag him onto the "buh-us" as she called it.
She had dressed him in some of her dad's old clothes, and he was wearing one of Souta's baseball caps. He didn't understand why Kagome made him wear it backwards, it looked odd to him.
"No, I won't let you drag us into the mouth of that monster, I said I would protect you, and protect you I will," he answered stubbornly.
Kagome couldn't help but smile, knowing he was just scared of the bus. Wanting to avoid a scene, she relented and stopped tugging on his hand.
"So then, how else do you suggest we get around?" She questioned. He smirked and grabbed Kagome bridal-style and jumped up on top of the nearest building.
"Like this!" He answered proudly. Kagome rolled her eyes and laughed, reaching up and kissing him on the cheek.

Later that night, they were sitting on the couch back at Kagome's house, both exhausted from the day of "shop-ping."
Inuyasha smiled at the girl beside him and suddenly had a silly thought. Reaching over, he tickled her stomach. Instantly, Kagome doubled over in laughter and turned to look up at him.
"Hah! You're ticklish, Kagome!" He said victoriously. Kagome smirked and reached over to him, tickling his sides. He doubled up as well, and the tickle war began.
When both were out of breath, they lay entwined on the couch, both drifting off to a happy sleep. Kagome's mom walked in, and immediately turned back and left, granting her daughter her privacy.
As she passed the kitchen, she reached behind the shelf, and pulled out Kagome's little brother Souta. Dragging him up to his room, she reprimanded him for spying on his sister.
After she had tucked him in, she went to her own room and climbed into bed, exhausted as well.
