Chapter 5: the storm
They walked down the path in silence at a quick pace, InuYasha had gotten several
yards ahead of Kagome when without warning it started to rain, just a sprinkle at
first, then a down pour, it started to rain so hard that even InuYasha was having
troubles seeing.
"InuYasha, We're going to have to find shelter soon" Kagome called to him
"I know that, what do you think I'm trying to do?" he snapped
They continued walking, the rain not letting up, then InuYasha saw something, it looked
like a small hut, the closer they got the more sure he was that it was a hut. Not saying
a word, he turned around with lighting fast speed and scooped Kagome up in his arms.
Not being able to recognize whom had her Kagome struggled "Let me go" She screamed.
"Not until I get you to the shelter I saw" came a familiar voice "InuYasha?" She
asked, "Of course it is," He said back to her. She stopped struggling and sighed,
"You should have said something" She said to him.
Reaching the small hut he had saw in a few short jumps it look deserted, giving the
door a firm kick to open it, he walked in still carrying Kagome, inside he set her down
on the floor so she could stand. Kagome tried to look around in the dark but failed
she stood frozen where InuYasha had set her. InuYasha could see perfect.
"InuYasha" Kagome called "I…I can't see a thing"
Stepping close to her InuYasha put his hand on her shoulder "I can see just fine" her
told her.
Taking his hand and feeling her way to his shoulder, she stepped closer to his chest
"What's in here?" she asked
Swallowing a bit InuYasha put is arms around her, to give some reassurance, He began
telling her what was in the hut "There's a small bed with a blanket on it, A fire place
with a little bit of wood in it, there's more wood laying on the floor, A few lamps and
a table with a chair" He told her. "She really can't see, she's helpless, and needs me
more then anything right now," He thought smiling. He caught her scent, it was just
as strong as usual, leaning his head down a little closer to her, he inhaled deep, taking
her scent in, trying to consume it all, his eyes began to close, he was becoming lost
in her scent, the nearness of her was also affecting him in was he didn't think possible.
Trying to bring himself back, he thought "I better do something, or I'm not going to
be able to keep myself under control"
"InuYasha? InuYasha?" Kagome called, concern in her voice.
"Huh?" He whispered, regaining his control.
"InuYasha, Are you all right?" she asked
"Uh…" feeling himself blush "Yeah, I'm fine" he said his voice a little shaky "Damn,
almost lost it there, I can't let that happen again, I can't let her know, she'd probably
think I'm a hentai like that houshi, Miroku " He thought feeling a bit awkward, he asked
her "Do you have anything in you bag that I could use to light one of the lamps with?"
"Um…" she thought for a second "Yeah, I think so" moving away from him a little she
removed he back pack, holding it out in the darkness she said, "Here, you look, I
wouldn't be able to find it"
Growling inside at himself "Damn, I had to ask" taking the pack from her, he opened
it, looking around inside, "Uh…Exactly what am I looking for?" he asked
"A camping lighter," she said casually.
"A What?" InuYasha asked a little confused.
"It's a long circular metal object with a plastic handle" she described
"Alright," he said and kept looking, finding the weird thing, "I think I found it" he told
her. "What now?"
"Hand it to me, and then get me one of the lamps" Kagome said.
"Hold out your hand" he said.
Doing as she was asked, she put her arm out with her palm facing up. InuYasha put
the thing in her hand, "I'm going to get the lamp now" he let her know moving away
from her.
Starting to get cold from being in her wet clothes, Kagome said, "al…alright" shivering
a bit, "Baka, use the lighter" she thought to herself. Taking the lighter, she clicked
the switch; a low soft glow appeared allowing her to see some of the hut. InuYasha
walked back to her carrying the lamp, he held it up to her, "Here's the lamp," he said
looking at the strange object. Kagome took the lighter and lit the lamp. Being ably to
see the hut all the way know, Kagome walked to the chair and sat down, wrapping
her arms around herself, shivering more.
InuYasha looked at her "your cold" He said.
"O..o…onn…llly…yyy….a…a… llli…llittt…llee…b...b…it" She stuttered
"A little bit my ass," He snapped at her.
Moving towards Kagome, he stopped and looked down at her, "Get in that bed over
there, I can't afford for you to get sick on me" he said; his voice touched with annoyance.
"You mean too much to me" He thought in concern
"I…I'll b…b…be f…f…fine" she manage to shiver out "w…we sh…sh…should st…start a
f..fire"
"Fine" was his only response. Picking up the weird object Kagome had used earlier to
light the lamp he walked over to the fireplace, mimicking what he had seen Kagome
do he lit the object, putting the flame under the wood, he got a fire started, walking
back to Kagome he picked her up. Kagome was about to protest but he gave her a
look that told her it was useless to do so. He placed her onto the bed looking at her
he said "Remove your clothes and I will hang them up to dry" Kagome looked back at
him in complete disbelief her mouth fell open she was about to say something when
he walked away, keeping his back to her He said "I wont look, I wouldn't want to,"
he thought "I would love to" he slowly started to turn his head, but stopped. "No.
This is not the way I will see her, I will see her only if she wants me to" He scolded
himself.
"I'm done, you can look now" She called to him.
InuYasha turned around slowly, he went over to her and picked up her clothes, going
over to the table he laid them out to dry, then he went to the chair and sat down,
he look at Kagome "do you need me to put more wood on for you?" He asked in his
usual gruff tone that held no care or love.
"If you wouldn't mind" Kagome replied in a low and thoughtful tone
"Fine, you humans are all a like, you get cold fast" He growled standing up and putting
more wood in the fireplace. Returning to the place he was sitting, he look out the single
small window.
Not hearing his rude comment, Kagome, asked "InuYasha do you realize how long
we've been collecting the shards?"
Caught off guard InuYasha turned and looked at Kagome, thought for a moment "Hn,
you were…uh" scratching his head still thinking "fifteen, right?" He finally asked
"Yeah" She replied a little hurt
"And your, how old are you now?" He asked, "how could you forget how old she was!"
he yelled at himself
"InuYasha! My birthday was just two months ago, and already you have forgotten my
age?" She asked him more hurt then before "I'm now eight-teen!"
"Gomen Nasai" He replied in a soft tone looking back out the window feeling ashamed
"Baka! You have been waiting for her to come of age and you forget about it? And
you say you care for her"
She looked at him softly "InuYasha?"
"Yeah?" He answered not looking at her
"After…after we find all the shards what…" She couldn't finish what she was thinking
her throat was beginning to tighten, her eyes filled with tears, she looked quickly away
from him hoping he wouldn't notice them filling her eyes.
He looked at her, sensing she was crying, he walked over to the edge of the bed and
sat down, "Whatever we want I guess" he answered her tenderly "At least you can do
whatever you want, me, I'm stuck being around you"
"Stuck? Why are you stu…" she stopped remembering the rosary around his neck
"Oh, Your stuck with me until you are released from the rosary" she said in a very
sad tone "If you were released what would you do?" she asked dreading his answer.
"I don't know really," was his reply
She didn't respond to him, apart of her was happy he said that, but apart was very
upset.
It was his turn to ask questions "Kagome?"
She answered her voice shaky "Yeah"
"Why are you so upset?" He asked concern creeping into his voice
"Because of what I'm about to do," She replied so low he almost didn't hear her.
