<b><i>Interlude:</i> A Shimmer of Light in the Darkness of Death.</b>
<b>///.....///</b>
<b><i>"Yasashiku"</i>
Yasashiku turned around, His baby blue eyes warm and loving.
Kagome herself had never been looked at in that way, But for some reason her body reacted to that look in a warm, really familiar way.
<i>"Yes, my love?"</i>
Kagome could feel her facial muscles stretch out into a smile all on their own.
<i>"Why...Why is the Monk who is to marry us taking so long?"</i>
Yasahiku smiled down at her again. Two strides and he was in front of her, Grabbing on to her shoulders.
Kagome's body remained calm and collected, As if expecting what was to come, but her mind went a mile a minute. No, he was going to kiss her. No, she had never been kissed before. He would be her first and she didn't even <i>know</i> who he was.
<i>"Don't be in such a hurry my love, We will marry regardless".</i>
And just like she knew he would, Yasashiku bent his head down and pressed his lips to hers.
Kagome could feel her body relax into the kiss and she was immensely grateful that she could barely feel it at all.
Yasashiku pulled away from the kiss and gave her that small patient smile that reminded Kagome so much of.....
Miroku.
<i>"Kagome!"</i>
Again her mind reacted but her body would just not answer to her commands. That voice though, Someone was calling her.
<i>"Kagome where are you?! Answer me!"</i>
Kagome felt Yasashiku grab her hand. He gave her that smile again and again she was reminded of.....
<i>"Kagome! Listen to me! You're in danger!"</i>
And that sounded a lot like.....
Miroku.
Relief filling her when her eyes responded to her shock and widened Kagome felt her body stop it's movements. The dull, numb feeling that she had been feeling all over her body began to slowly abate, a small amount of feeling returning to the tips of her fingertips. A tingly sensation began to register at the corners of her eyes, then at her feet, then the tingle was strong enough in the area of her neck that she was able to turn her head. The field that had been behind the temple before was now gone replaced by nothing but empty whiteness.
<i>"Kagome! Please answer me!"</i>
There, she could see him. He was like a glint of bright light surrounded by nothing but darkness.
<i>"Kagome!"</i>
<i>"I.....I...I'm...He...Here!"</i>
Relieved that she was able to use her vocal cords once again, Kagome forced the rest of her body to turn and look at Miroku. He was getting closer by the second. Worried she looked down at herself and found that the white dress was gone. And so was her belly. She was once again in her own white dress, the one she had been wearing before she lost consciousness.
Two more seconds and Miroku was there, looking at her with an expression full of relief.
<i>"There you are"</i>
Kagome smiled at him but then her eyes went wide.
<i>"Miroku. Who's that guy behind me?"</i>
Miroku looked at her confused then behind her, then back at her again.
<i>"What....guy?"</i>
Wide eyed, Kagome turned and looked behind her.
Nothing. The temple had disappeared and so had Yasashiku. It was all white now.
<i>"Kagome, we must leave. I do not know if you feel that numbing sensation or not, But our souls are not in our bodies. If we stay away much longer, we won't be able to return."</i>
Now scared to death, Kagome turned and grabbed his outstretched hand without even thinking twice about it.
They began walking through the white void they were on. To Kagome it all looked the same. But Miroku seemed to know where he was going so she let him guide her along.
It seemed like an eternity but eventually the whiteness started to fade into darkness and the numbness began to be replaced with pain.
A lot of it.</b>
<b>///.....///</b>
Miroku weakly dragged himself towards Kagome who was still unconscious on the floor of Kaede's hut. Worried that she hadn't been able to come down out of it he sat up and lifted her up into his arms, Her body lying across his lap.
He placed his uncursed hand on her cheek and looked down at her closed eyes. "Kagome....Wake up", He whispered hoarsely. His throat felt like hadn't had a drink of water in centuries.
Suddenly her baby blue eyes opened and settled on his. Miroku could tell her eyes were still unfocused to the outside world. He rubbed his thumb lightly across her smooth cheek losing himself for a moment in the feel of her skin.
Kagome's mouth slid open slowly, Her full lips forming an o. Her throat muscles visibly jumped as her chest began to heave for air. Then she was jerking up into a sitting position and coughing as if her lungs were about to leave her body through her mouth.
Miroku gently rubbed her back feeling his energy leave him a little more. Kagome gratefully stopped coughing and landed back on his chest just as exhausted as he felt.
"Oh god", She whispered her voice raspy. "What the hell just happened?"
Miroku hugged her to him in relief, thanking Buddha that she was not dead. Slowly he lowered her to the ground until she was laying upon it once again. On the brink of passing out, he lowered himself next to her staring right into her eyes.
Kagome smiled up weakly at Miroku feeling her eyes start to close. "My neck hurts," she whispered allowing her eyes to close.
Miroku assumed she had passed out. Sighing in relief he placed his left on her cheek and pressed a small relief filled kiss to her lips before passing out next to her.
And that was the last thing Kagome felt before passing out as well.
<b>.

.
.</b>
"Kaede, do you think they are alright now?" Shippou whispered looking at Kagome and Miroku who were passed out next to each other.
"Yes, child. I can feel that their souls have returned to their bodies. Miroku must have been successful in bringing her back down but it is expected that they are both exhausted. They will probably sleep until late tomorrow," Kaede said stirring the soup she was cooking for the other three members of the group.
Sango sighed in relief looking over at her friend and annoying crush. She then looked at Inuyasha who was looking at Miroku with narrowed eyes. "What's wrong?" she asked.
"Nothing," Inuyasha grumbled, not removing his eyes from Miroku. Earlier when he had passed by them, Inuyasha had caught a strong sniff of Kagome's scent near the monk's face. He didn't know exactly what it meant but he felt jealousy begin to cloud his mind, nonetheless.
Sango rolled her eyes and graciously excepted the bowl Kaede handed to her. Shippou was next in line digging into his food with a passion. Inuyasha was finally able to tear his eyes away from the two unconscious figures and began eating as well but at a much slower pace then what he usually did.
Groggy blue eyes opened to look at the ceiling of the hut. Clearing his dry throat, Miroku blinked his eyes several times until the ceiling looked at least recognizable. Moving slightly, he felt his left arm bump into a soft source of warmth. Turning his head slightly, he saw Kagome next to him, under the same blanket as he was. A smile fluttered briefly across his face as he looked at her breath in and out deeply.
Hell, his body hurt more than anything at the moment. Miroku doubted with all his might that he would be able to get up for the next few days. But Kagome was next to him, <i>alive</i> and well. Or at least as well as someone with a deep wound on their neck could be.
"I see you're awake."
Miroku's head snapped in the direction of Inuyasha's voice. The hanyou jumped up from his seated position and walked over to look Miroku down in the face. Leaning down, he took another sniff and growled jumping away. Now he could pin point the location from where Kagome's scent was coming from on the Monk's body.
Or more precisely, his <i>mouth</i>.
"Monk, you'd better have a good reason for why her scent is coming from your mouth," Inuyasha growled in a low tone not wanting to awake the sleeping inhabitants of the hut.
Miroku's face clouded over in confusion and then realization flashed momentarily in the depths of his blue eyes.
Miroku tried his hardest to keep his face straight but, <i>Fuck</i>! In that one moment of relief he had done something so...so...
God dammit, he didn't want to think it was wrong. Because it hadn't felt wrong at all. It was just something he should not have done.
But he had been so full of relief and yet still so out of it that he hadn't stopped to think. He hadn't stopped to think that he should not kiss Kagome. He just did.
"Monk," Inuyasha growled still awaiting his answer.
Miroku cleared his dry throat once more, Searching mentally for a satisfactory answer that would help his chances of staying alive. He opened his mouth hoping and praying that his excuse would turn to be a good one when he felt a small, warm hand slip into his own.
"Inuyasha."
Both men turned their heads in the direction of Kagome's. She was looking at the ceiling, obviously in too much pain to turn her head in their direction.
"Leave him alone," she said her voice rough and dry.
Inuyasha's ears twitched in agitation. "Kagome......."
"DON'T make me repeat myself," she warned glaring at him from the sides of her eyes.
"His scent is coming from your mouth....."
"...and there is a good reason for <i>that</i>," Kagome interjected closing her eyes in pain. Fire. That was the only way to explain it. But that's what it felt like was coming from the right side of her neck. It hurt even to talk as it was so she was really hoping that at the moment Inuyasha would have enough common sense to just let her be.
Inuyasha glared at the monk then back at the miko with a questioning look.
Miroku opened his mouth again to speak but the small warm in his grasp gave a hard squeeze. Deciding that maybe just maybe, Kagome did have a good excuse to save his life, he closed his mouth and stayed absolutely shut.
Kagome swallowed a few more times to wet her throat before continuing. "It's called CPR you dolt," she said, squeezing Miroku's hand again so that he would hopefully keep his expression neutral.
Thankfully he did.
"CPR...? What the hell is CPR?" Inuyasha growled suspiciously.
"Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation", Kagome supplied as if it was the most simplest of terms.
Heh, 500 hundred years in the future it was at least.
Miroku did his best to keep his face straight, faking it as if he knew what Kagome was talking about when in fact he felt even more lost than Inuyasha looked.
"Again.....What the hell is that?" Inuyasha asked his face completely blank.
"It's a mouth to mouth way of resuscitating a person who has stopped breathing. That's why Miroku's mouth smells like mine. He had to breath air into my lungs through my mouth".
Miroku flinched inwardly when she pinched his hand in warning. OK, ok he got the point. Keep still and nod your head arrogantly.
Inuyasha growled again but leaned back off Miroku. "And just how does Miroku know about this method?", He asked still too suspicious to let go of the subject.
"It was part of my monk training of course", Miroku said in a tone that suggested that he was very proud of himself.
"Fine, but next time, monk, find a better way of helping her out", Inuyasha mumbled moving away from the awakened couple to awake Kaede.
Miroku let his blue eyes land on Kagome and found her looking at him as well. Nodding his thanks he squeezed her hand, silently promising an apology. If she would forgive him. Obviously she knew he had kissed her. And if he was correct, It had been her first kiss ever.
Sigh.
Guilt clouding over his mind, Miroku let go of Kagome's hand and looked away focusing his stare on the well. Soon Kaede was at their side checking Kagome's stitches before going to brew some tea to help them regain their strength.
Kagome continued to stare at the ceiling confused as to why he had kissed her.
And also why it didn't anger her.
She supposed it was because she was too tired to be angry. Hopefully once she was back to normal she could find that righteous anger that she was entitled too. After all it had been her first kiss he stole.
<i>The jerk....</i>
"Miroku, ye will have to sit up and drink this tea while I help Kagome", Kaede whispered being mindful of the still sleeping Sango and Shippou.
Miroku groaned and inhaled deeply as he forced his body to lift itself up off the ground. Holding himself up with his right arm flat on the floor, Miroku excepted the tea with a strained thank you. He sipped at the tea lightly his throat protesting the whole way. He sneaked a glance at Kagome from the side of his eyes and saw her wincing as Kaede held her head up so that she could drink her tea. Scowling softly in sympathy he finished off his tea quickly, placed the cup down and allowed his body to collapse back on to the floor.
Unfortunately, his right arm must have been more tired than he had first thought because his landed on the floor pretty hard.
"Miroku, are ye ok?", Kaede asked as the monk fell into a fit of coughs.
Kagome scowled at the concern that laced through her but promptly tried her best to squash it.
Come on, she needed to be angry at him.
"I'm fine, Lady Kaede", Miroku said rubbing his throat and wandering when the hell his back would be ok again.
"Good, because I expect ye to get better very soon", Kaede said helping Kagome lay back down.
"And why is that?", Miroku asked squinting one eye open.
"Because I am sending Kagome and ye up to the mountains for some spiritual training".
</i>Buddha, Why couldn't I have died instead?</i>
And as she pondered it, Kagome came to the conclusion that she was doomed. Irrevocably <i>doomed</i>.
