******Seven Years Later******

Six year old, Kumiko gathered flowers in the garden of her Father’s Castle. She had the eyes and breath taking features of her Mother, Kaoru and the strength and flowing white hair of her Father, Tsutomo. She wasn’t vain but she was happy to look mostly human all except for the dog ears on top. She was picking flowers for Youta who she became especially fond of. He would always be there to catch her when she fell. Kumiko knew she wasn’t allowed to wander to far from the grounds but seeing the beautiful mountains and the pretty birds fly free, it made her yearn for something more.

Kumiko heard the cries of her baby Brother inside. Yasu looked human also, fair skinned with white hair. He carried the markings of their Father, a crescent moon on his forehead and purple stripes on both cheeks. Kumiko knew the human blood inside them was strong, and she knew the youkai side of them was dangerous, and it wasn’t for the human genes they carried they would be swallowed by overwhelming power.

“Thank Goodness for Mother.” Kumiko said to herself picking a special flower just for her. Kumiko thought back to the time Kumiko questioned her family origins.

“Mother are there other Hanyous in our Family?” Kumiko asked as her Mother brushed her hair.

“No Dear.” Kumiko could hear a strong sadness in her Mother’s voice.

“Are you sad?” Kumiko asked worried.

“No Kumiko, I’m not sad. You are the only Hanyous in the Family. In fact you and Yasu are the only two hanyous to exist.” Kaoru smiled.

Kumiko smiled at this. “Wow so we are extra special.” Kumiko giggled.

“You are the most special children in all the lands.” Kaoru winked.

Kumiko giggled at the memory. ‘There is no other being like us.’ Kumiko thought to herself. Suddenly she was startled by the rustling of leaves and the exasperated breath of a young boy running through the woods. He stopped when he saw Kumiko’s surprised face. Kumiko could feel a strong connection between the boy and herself, he appeared older than her, by maybe a year or more. But his eyes told her something strange, they told her they were the same.
The older boy had golden eyes and brown hair. His skin was tan and he wore the clothes of a village peasant. He was sweating and seemed really nervous.

“Are you running from something?” Kumiko asked.

“I think I’m running to something.” The boy’s response puzzled Kumiko.

“What?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Then why are you running.”

The smiled at the familiar eyes of the young girl. When he first laid eyes on her, flashes of a sad woman he didn’t recognize came to him. He was angry at these strange images. But didn’t understand why. He was about to ask Kumiko where she came from until a large bat demon lunged out of the forest behind him. Kumiko screamed as the boy crouched down, his back to the demon. Kumiko stared in horror as a large hump began growing from the boy’s back. Out of the hump came eight long hairy legs and finally the body of a horrendously large spider emerged and while still attached to the boy, the beast reached out and plucked the demon from the sky. Kumiko covered her ears as the demon made terrible shrieking noises trying to escape with it’s life. But it was to late the spider monster retreated back into the boy’s body it’s terrified cargo in tow.

The boy looked up after the two beasts disappeared. He saw the petrified look in Kumiko’s eyes and he felt happy inside. Although he didn’t readily admit it, he enjoy watching the pain and turmoil in people’s expressions, it made him fill with a strangely comforting feeling. Kumiko didn’t want to ask questions, she quickly ran back to the safety of the her castle. The boy called out to her but it only made her run faster.

Kaoru was calling to her daughter from the entrance of the castle.

“That Kumiko, always sneaking off.” Kaoru said to herself. Kaoru soon saw her daughter running towards her, fear in her eyes. Kaoru didn’t hesitate, quickly she formed a ball of energy and pulled out of her chest, preparing to lunge at her daughter’s attacker Kaoru stopped as Kumiko ran past her and into the castle. The boy stopped chasing Kumiko and stared at the woman holding the blue orb. It was the woman in all his visions and dreams.

“You, you are the person I’ve been searching for.” The Boy said nervously. Kaoru looked deeply into the boy’s dark yellow eyes. She noticed his scraggily brown hair and fair skin. Kaoru felt her eyes begin to well as the energy ball in her hand dissipated. The Boy cautiously stepped forward never taking his eyes off Kaoru. Suddenly the energy ball formed again in Kaoru’s hands.

“I’m Sorry.” Kaoru said softly as she clutched her eyes shut and flung the devastating ball in the child’s direction. The blast shook the castle and left a gigantic crater in it’s wake. When the smoke cleared the boy was gone.

Kaoru looked away from the crater holding back her hurt. “My son, why have you returned.” Kaoru disappeared inside the castle gates.

The boy ran through the forest, away from the woman with the ball. He didn’t expect that reaction.

‘Who was she?’ He thought to himself. ‘Why is she the one I’ve been searching for?’ The boy ran until his legs burned and his heart nearly gave out. He slowed to a crawl until he saw the walls of another mighty castle. Just outside the gates were brilliant red apples, ripe and calling to him. Cautiously the boy approached the apple tree and plucked three for his journey through the forest.

“You there!” A strong voice called out. The boy turned to see a castle guard standing over him. The massive guard lifted the child by his arm, causing the boy to drop the fruit. “You dare steal from Lord Kouji!” The boy gasped at the sound of the ruthless Lord’s name. He had heard of the powerful Yukino Family and their rule over all the lands. All the lands except for the Tashio Land. The land he was chased from.

“Please let me go, I didn’t mean it!” The boy struggled to get free, if his defense mechanism should emerge in that area he would surely be killed without mercy by Kouji. The guard pulled the crying boy inside the castle, the boy tried with all his power to withhold his spider side.

“You will tell it to the Lord Boy!” The castle guard growled as he dragged him through the massive halls of the castle. The boy remained silent as he concentrated on hiding his powers. He clutched his eyes shut until the guard let him go. When he opened his eyes he saw the angry amber eyes of Lord Kouji. The castle guard bowed before Kouji forcing the child down with him.

Kouji looked into the eyes of the boy, he seemed so familiar.

“Child, what are you called.” Kouji demanded.

“I live without a name My Lord.” The boy nervously responded. He had the power to hide his youki, but he was afraid the Lord was much to powerful to hide anything from him.

“Where is your village?” Kouji asked, wondering more about this mysterious child.
“I live without a village.” The boy responded, thinking back to the massacre of his village, his friends, his parents. All by the uncontrollable power of his demon spider side.

“Child, who is your Father?” Kouji probed futher.

“I do not know Lord, my world is filled with many untruths.” The boy began. “My parents revealed to me that I did not share their blood. In fact I was brought to them by a small yellow inu youkai. And so the name I once carried and the village I once lived is not my own.” The boy spoke defiantly, it was the tone Kaoru once had when she hid her pain. Kouji winced at the thought of his lost daughter, he remember looking down on the lifeless bodies of his daughter, grandchild and their inu youkai servant. This child could not be of my blood. He stared into the boy’s eyes and a familiar sight caught his eye. A yellow cloth hung from the child’s belt. He knew that cloth, it could only come from Youta. The boy looked down to the cloth and took it from his belt. “Do you know this cloth?” The boy asked.

“Where did you get that Boy.” Kouji’s voice boomed sending a chill down the child’s spine. The boy clutched the cloth against his chest remembering his so called parent’s confession and the consequences of their deceptions. Before he could answer Kouji was standing above him a evil glare in his eyes. Kouji quickly took him by his sleeve and angrily he looked the child in his golden familiar eyes. The boy saw the anger in the golden eyes of this man, he saw the eyes of the women from before, he couldn’t understand why he seemed connected to them.

“I-I was wrapped in it as a child.” The boy stammered. “It was left by the yellow inu. The inu can answer my questions.” The boy was becoming much more defiant than Kouji wanted.

“Boy, what is the name of this inu.” Kouji tightened his grip on the boy’s collar beginning to constrict his air flow.

“I...” The boy began to seriously choke and Kouji released his hold on the boy only slightly, just enough to get answers. “I was told it was a inu youkai called Youta.” He finally choked out. Kouji dropped the boy in shock. It was true this child was his grandchild and heir to the family legacy. It was true he had three other daughters but it was predetermined that Kaoru would be blessed with the Family’s power. Another reason he didn’t want her tainted with youkai blood.

“You-You are the child of my Kaoru.” Kouji stammered. The boy placed his hand over his bruised neck taking in deep wanted, breaths.

“Kaoru,” The boy softly repeated. “Kaoru was her name.” The boy fidgeted with the cloth. ‘That woman who attacked me she was my Mother, her name was Kaoru.’ The boy wanted to run out back to the woman he knew was his Mother, he wanted to know why she abandoned him and why she tried to kill him when he returned to her. ‘Perhaps Lord Kouji can help.’ The boy smiled cunningly. “Kaoru, Mother she lives” Kouji was taken back by the change in the young child’s voice, something sinister grew inside him and Kouji liked it.

“My boy,” Kouji grinned. “Lead my army.”
