“You look like hell,” said Miroku as he opened his arms for the damaged young woman hanging outside his apartment door. Collapsing into his chest, Kagome let out all the tears she had been damming back since she left Sesshomaru's.

Through strong sobs Kagome choked out, “I…I…just don't know what went wrong. I mean everything is so wrong now and he'll never want me again. I know he won't. I hurt him so bad and I don't even know why.” Rubbing her back in slow circles, Miroku picked up her bag, unlocked his door, and shuffled her into his apartment. Sitting her on his suede couch, he went into the kitchen to make some tea so that she could have time alone to get herself together.

Coming back out with a serving tray, Miroku placed it on the table and gave her a cup of the steaming tea. He watched her nurse it for a few minutes before she spoke. “Miroku, what do you know about Sesshomaru?”

Surprised by her question, for he thought that he would be the one doing the interrogating, Miroku swallowed before he began to wrack his brain for some information on the infamous Sesshomaru Taisho. Knowing that if she had to ask him what he knew about Sesshomaru, InuYasha must not have mentioned him at all. Not that he could blame his friend for wanting to forget. InuYasha's life growing up was hard and Sesshomaru went out of his way to make it harder. Turning his body towards her, he saw the desperation in her eyes, and knew that he would be helping both her and InuYasha by shedding a little more light onto Inu's history. Running a hand through his short inky locks, Miroku began to tell Kagome the story of her mate.

“I assume that InuYasha has not told you much about his parents?” Watching her nod in acquiescence, he continued. “Well, I met InuYasha after he and his mother were evicted from their apartment when he was about eight years old. To avoid the streets, Auntie Iza moved in with the mother of her childhood best friend, Kaede. Kaede's daughter was also named Iza, short for Izabelle, and she and Inu's mom were best friends until their junior year of high school when Izabelle has hit by a car and killed. Kaede became very lonely when her daughter died, for she had lost her husband to a heart attack only two years prior. So when Auntie Iza asked if she and Inu could stay with her, she was happy to lend a helping hand and gain a little company as well.

Curious to understand more about her love's childhood, Kagome interrupted Miroku to ask, “What about Izayoi's parents? Why couldn't she return home to them with Yash?”

Taking a sip from his cup of tea, Miroku swallowed and addressed her question. “I really don't know much about Auntie Iza's family, since I have never met them, but I do know that they disowned her when they found out that she was pregnant. As far as I know, after she left home, she never heard from or spoke to them again. To this day, I don't think Yash even knows his maternal grandparents' names.”

Watching Kagome's eyes widen in surprise, Miroku went on, “Auntie Iza, I'm quite sure came from a pretty well-off family. And when she got pregnant with Inu during her first year of college, by a man who was over 20 years her senior, they were really disappointed in her. Then when they found out that she has having the baby of a demon, they wanted nothing to do with her. And being the proud woman that she was, I don't think that Auntie Iza would have asked them for help of any kind, even if after eight years they were willing to help her out.”

Nodding in understanding, Kagome let Miroku continue. “Well despite the hardships they faced before they got to Kaede's, once they did, things got a whole lot better for them. Kaede owned the house, so the only expenses were basic things, which made it a lot easier for Auntie Iza to keep up with everything. Plus, Kaede adored Inu and the two spent a lot of time together and became real close. Since I was the only kid Inu's age, we became fast friends. I pretty much moved in as well since my own drunk of a father didn't give a damn, so Auntie Iza became my mother, and Kaede became a grandmother to the both of us and we kinda formed our own little family.” Cracking a small smile at the memories of his “family,” Miroku's eyes suddenly clouded over as images of Izayoi's death and funeral invaded his mind.

“When Auntie Iza was killed, it devastated all of us. For Kaede, it was like losing another daughter, for me another mother, and for Inu…it was like he lost half of himself. Kaede and I tried to be there for him and Sango too, but he just always seemed to be missing something. He didn't know anything about his father since Auntie Iza never told him who he was and Kaede didn't know anything either, so he just always seemed incomplete. Then on his eighteenth birthday, some lawyer guy stopped by and told him that his father left some money in his will for him. InuYasha was so excited to learn his father's name; you should have seen the light that shone in his eyes. And when he heard that he had a half brother…I have never seen anyone so genuinely happy in my life. He was finally going to find out who he was, where he came, from, where he belonged.”

Stopping for a minute, Miroku took a deep breath and held his head in his hands. Turning to look in Kagome's eyes, he continued, “Watching his heart fall the way it did when he got that letter from Sesshomaru was hard for all of us. To find out that his only known relative was suing him and his father's estate in order to contest the authenticity of the will and his paternity, hurt Inu deeply. InuYasha so was disappointed to learn that his family reunion would go down in a courtroom, but he was willing to fight, until…”

Seeing the hurt in her friend's eyes, Kagome moved closer to him and put her hand on his shoulder encouraging him to go on, “Until what Miro, what happened?”

“Until the morning we were set to see the mediator, Sesshomaru dropped by to speak to Inu. The resemblance between the two was obvious so I knew we had a case against his paternity claim, without DNA. But when, when Sesshomaru told Yash that he cursed the day that he was born and had no intention of letting a `bastard half breed' pollute his father's name and legacy, Inu, well he just gave up. After he realized that Sesshomaru was determined to battle him in court in order to prevent him from ever obtaining his birthright just because he hated him, Inu became so crushed that he just let go. He didn't even want to see the mediator anymore. He just told Sesshomaru that he would not be contesting his claims against the authenticity of the will, and that if he would stay out of his life if he promised to stay out of his.

After that, Inu left on his own for a while. I don't even know where he went. But when he got back all he said was that he didn't need a family or anyone else's money, because he would make a name for himself, by himself. He just let it all go…all his hopes and dreams of belonging and having a family just went out the door. Succeeding and becoming someone on his own became his sole focus, until he found you. Now that you understand who and why he is Kagome, what happened between you and Sesshomaru? What did you do to break Inu's spirit again?”

Letting her head fall, Kagome began to cry silently to herself. Wrapping his arms around her, Miroku held Kagome close and whispered quiet words of encouragement in her ear. After a few minutes, her tears began to subside and she gathered enough air to be able to speak. Leaving nothing out, Kagome told Miroku about how she researched InuYasha's father, found out about Sesshomaru, and made arrangements to meet him. She went into great detail about how they developed a friendship over the first few months and communicated over the internet. But her strength failed her as she began to explain how their conversations progressed in their intimacy. Tears began to flow from her eyes like a torrential river until she finally broke down to her knees. With her head in Miroku's lap, Kagome finished by telling him how InuYasha found out about their internet affair via a video emailed to his phone.

Surprised at her soap opera inspired tale, Miroku ran a hand through his disheveled hair and looked unseeingly out the window. After several minutes of silence, he delicately lifted Kagome's chin with his hand, and asked her, “Do you love InuYasha?” Watching her shake her head in a confirming nod, he asked again, “Kagome, do you love InuYasha, yes or no?” Realizing her error, this time around Kagome responded with a resounding, “Yes.” Moving on, Miroku maintained his eye contact with Kagome and asked her, “Do you want to be with InuYasha and only InuYasha, yes or no?” After receiving a confident, “Yes,” Miroku asked his last question of the night, “What are you willing to do to get him back?”

Expecting a lag in her response time, Miroku almost missed her answer as he too began to think about what could be done to bring InuYasha and Kagome back together again. Feeling slightly abashed for not paying attention, Miroku tried to cover up his embarrassment with a displaced chuckle as he asked her, “Come again?”

Confident in her love for InuYasha and dedication to their relationship, Kagome was not discouraged and repeated her response in a clear and resolute voice, “Anything.”

Shocked at her courage, Miroku pulled both himself and Kagome onto their feet and drew her into a consuming hug that relayed all of the support he had for her and for InuYasha. “I am disappointed at what you did, but I know that you love InuYasha Kagome, and I am going to do everything in my power to make sure he knows that as well.”

Walking away from their embrace, Miroku showed Kagome to Sango's bathroom so that she could wash-up and change her clothes. After instructing Kagome to get some rest, he cleaned up the dishes from their tea party, and after making sure that Kagome was in fact asleep, made an attempt to get in touch with Sango. Checking the time, he realized that it was extremely late or early, depending on how you looked at it, and that Sango had most likely gotten InuYasha to get some rest as well. Knowing that she would be safe at his apartment, he decided that he would not disturb them and too turned in for the night, but his concern for his friends would not let him find the sleep he so desperately needed.

Turning onto his back, Miroku began to think about the events of yesterday, and InuYasha's wrecked state. The woman across the hall probably undid all the damage her love had repaired in the first place, but he didn't think all was lost. “She loves him and he loves her, they can make it work.” Sighing Miroku turned to his side as his thoughts began to drift to his own love life, or lack thereof. When Inu and Kagome got together, they fell fast and hard, and he had to admit that it made him a little jealous to see them so utterly happy. It confused him because after watching how Inu broke apart after Auntie Iza's death and Sesshomaru's appearance, all he wanted was for him to find his missing piece. But his and Kagome's joy helped him to realize that he was only half done as well.

It was after Inu had asked Kagome to move in with him that Miroku decided to really try to make things work with Sango. But because of their history together, she was not openly receptive to his advances. In fact, because she didn't think that Miroku was serious about being committed, even after weeks of hanging out together and going on dates, she refused when he asked her to be his girlfriend. Convinced that he and Sango would never be, and sexually frustrated after a month of empty teasing, Miroku called up an ex-girlfriend to help him release all of his tensions. A mistake he now looked upon as his biggest. He would never forget Sango's face when she saw him that night.

Flashback
Miroku had dated Koharu on and off for about two years. They were never considered “exclusive,” so in reality they were more often off
as opposed to on. But despite the blurred lines of their relationship, he and Koharu were always there for each other when things went wrong…sexually. And now that he had spent over a month chasing after a woman that he would most likely never catch, he was in desperate need of her…services.

Pressing the number combination 69, which he reserved for Koharu for obvious reasons, he waited to hear her
sultry voice on the other end.

“Hey lover, to what do I owe this euphoric surprise?”

Feeling his pants decrease a size, Miroku shuffled in his seat as he spoke breathily into the phone, “If just the sound of my voice can bring you to a state of euphoria, imagine what other parts of me can do?”

Used to their sexual exchanges, Koharu didn't miss a beat as she moaned into the phone and coyly replied, “Probably a whole lot more
pleasure than my tiny fingers are able to bring me right now…”

Almost dropping the phone, Miroku had to resist the
urge to unzip his own pants and bring himself to a state of completion to the sound of Koharu's voice. Instead he told her that he would meet her at her place in 10 minutes and not to cum without him. When he arrived, he found that Koharu had in fact failed to comply with his command, but her personal time ensured that she was more than ready for the beating he had in store.

Miroku and Koharu worked each other's bodies for most of the night and well into the next day. And by mid-morning he was ready to organize his thoughts and make some of the tough decisions that needed
to be made concerning his future and Sango. After thanking Koharu for her…services, she walked him to the door and kissed him one final time. As they kissed in between the threshold of the apartment door, a gasp interrupted their private moment. Turning around to see who was rude enough to butt in, Miroku was shocked to see Sango with her eyes focused on his own. Giving him a look that would turn fire into ice, Sango turned her back to him and made her way down the hall to the elevator with her friend who he recognized as the woman she wanted Inu to meet over a year ago.

End of flashback

Shedding a tear, Miroku put aside his friend's pain to reflect on his own. Even though Sango forgave him, she made it clear that she wasn't interested in them ever attempting a relationship again, and he told her that he was fine with them just being friends. And good friends they had become over the last year, especially after they moved in together. But deep down, Miroku knew that he had lied to both Sango and himself when he told her that being friends was enough.

“Since Sango moved in with me, I have slowly but surely been falling deeper and deeper in love with her.” Closing his eyes, after his private confession, Miroku was finally able to find enough peace of mind to get some sleep.
