Chapter 1: Shock

“We tried to reach you at school, but were told you already left. I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but he was pronounced died at the scene.”
………………………&# 8230;………………………… …………………

They stood there watching as silent tears slide down the young girls face. It was an awkward two minutes before she said anything to the two officers.

“Arigato.” she said in a polite, but sorrow filled voice.

“Ma'am are you okay?” the one who had stayed quiet throughout the ordeal asked.

She glanced at him and gave a sad smile at the worry and concern she saw in his eyes. “Oh … I'm fine … um … what time is it?”

“Um … its 2:35” The younger one answered a little confused.

“Oh god, I'm going to be late … excuse me but are we finished? I have somewhere to be and I'm already running late.” She said while rushing into the kitchen, turning off the stove and grabbing her keys and jacket.

Both officers shared a look of utter confusion, before one said. “Yes we're finished … but don't you think with the kind of news you just received you should stay at home.”

“Yeah, I'm sure where ever you have to go or who ever you have to met can wait.” The other said

They were already in the hallway, stepping into the elevator, when she replied, “No, they will understand my tardiness but not my absences.” They were about to say something else but the elevator doors open and she went rushing out saying.

“Now if you'll excuse me I have to go pick up my son.”

Leaving them in a confused daze as they watched her go. Once around the corner the two looked at each other, then in unison said.

“Son?”

She made to the daycare center in record time, but now she regretted getting there so fast. The whole way she had been trying to figure out how she was going to tell her 3 and a half-year-old son that his ojisan died. `What I'm I going to do!' she yelled to herself.

`You grow-up, you did before'

`That was different …' she was brought out of her thoughts when a happy kitunse jumped into her arms.

“Okaasan? You okay?” Shippou asked afraid he did something wrong, and that she was mad at him.

“I'm okay… why?” she asked halfheartedly. Still trying to find the best why to tell him as they made their way home.

He tucked his head under her chin and spoke in a low, soft voice. “You look sad.”

She looked down at the little kitunse hanging around her neck. Rubbing his back soothingly, knowing that he could sense the mood she was in, and didn't like it. The walk back to the apartment was made in complete silence, with Shippou occasionally snuggling and purring soothingly into her neck.

They arrived at the apartment ten minutes later. Shippou still worried because she was upset and scared that it was his fault. Kagome had already worked out what she was going to tell him, but decided to wait. She tried to put of telling him as long as she could, deciding to tell him after lunch.

They ate in total silence it wasn't until he started eating that he noticed that his Ojisan was missing. He glanced at Kagome about to ask where he was when he noticed that she wouldn't hear him. Sure she was sitting across from him, but she was not all there, he sensed the changes in her mood throughout the meal. At first she was sad, on the verge of tears, and then she was just sad. Towards the middle of the meal she was nervous but in the end she looked detached from this world, like one of the living-dead.

“Shippou?” she said emotionless.

“Hai?”

“Shippou, … ojisan was in a car accident earlier today.” She said it so low that if he had not been paying attention he would have missed it.

Car accident?” he looked at her in confusion, while he tried to figure out what that meant.

She got up and walked over to kneel in front of him, knowing he didn't get it. “I'm so sorry … Ojisan didn't make it … he died.”

“Ojisan's dead?” he almost choked on the words. His throat was closing and his eyes were sore from trying to hold in the tears and sobs, making his tiny body shake.

Kagome watched as her little boy, sat there shaking not knowing what to do. Finally she couldn't take it anymore, she gathered him in her arm and carried him into the living room and let him cry his self to sleep.

`I need to be strong for him, let him grief then later I can.' she though to herself.

`But damnit you lost him to, he was your father.' The little voice yelled.

`He comes first, always. … I can wait … I can always wait' she though as she rocked the little boy in her arms, fighting back tears of her own.

A/N: Hey you guys probably didn't notice the changes I made to the first chapter or this one for that matter. There very small chances but important in later chaps. I finally, got around to redoing these chapters.
