InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Nightmares ❯ the pain ( Chapter 1 )

Inuyasha awoke, as he had every night this past week, to the sound of Kagome whimpering fitfully in her sleep. It had been like this ever since their last battle.

Kagome had been battling alongside Inuyasha and the others as she always did, when suddenly the demon lashed forward leaving a deep wound along Kagome's stomach. Inuyasha fueled by righteous anger had lunged at the demon and using tessaiga taken its head off in one swing. Once the danger had passed Inuyasha and the others rushed to Kagome's side. Strangely the wound had already started to heal, but to be on the safe side her wound had been carefully cleaned and bandaged. Since Kagome had insisted she was fine, they had gathered their things and continued on their way.

Inuyasha still worried for her health and safety had demanded she let him carry her. Though she had complained that she could walk on her own, she had nonetheless allowed him to carry her.

At first it had seemed their truly was nothing to worry about, but soon Kagome had started to experience terrible nightmares and fits of depression accompanied by a constant pain where the wound had been. Of course being worried for Kagome's well being Inuyasha and the others had quickly rushed Kagome to Kaede. The old miko had carefully examined Kagome and found that the demon that had wounded her, had injected her with a poison that was affecting her mentally. Thankfully Kaede had known how to stop the poison from doing further damage, unfortunately she was unable to undo the damage already done. The pain and depression that came with it would abate and eventually cease, but the nightmares were something only Kagome herself could stop.

Try as she might Kagome could not rid herself of the nightmares. She was forced to relive the most painful experiences of her life over and over again while she slept and during the day was haunted by the repercussions of the horrible images. Due to this she was often tired and withdrawn, no longer the smiling, cheerful Kagome all her friends knew and loved.

Inuyasha carefully moved forward, lightly shaking Kagome from her fitful sleep. She opened tear filled eyes to gaze up at him and then fell into his arms weeping until she exhausted herself into a dreamless sleep. Inuyasha carefully laid her back in her sleeping bag and carefully, so as not to wake her from this blessed peaceful slumber, tucked her in. As he looked down at her tear stained face Inuyasha swore to himself that he would find a way to rid Kagome of these nightmares and return her to the Kagome that he knew and secretly loved.
