Chapter 6
Didn't I Tell You What I Believe
“NOOOOOOO!” InuYasha raised his head and howled in anguish.
The forest echoed with the sound, and the little demon which had been still in shocked silence ran for his life. But InuYasha did not go after him. His only concern was for Kagome.
Every time this happened, it took an increasing emotional toll on InuYasha. Desperately, he tried to still his shaking, and dashed the tears out of his eyes with the back of his hands. Then he took his haori and wrapped Kagome in it. Quickly, he put on his hakama and then proceeded to break down the camp. Stuffing her clothes and his white under shirt in her backpack in his haste, he then carefully hauled her unconscious body on his back. Then he took off at full speed.
When Kagome woke, it was close to dawn. She opened her eyes and groggily took stock of the situation. The wind from InuYasha's speed was whipping her hair back from her face, and his hair into hers as she rode on his back. Her hands automatically closed on his shoulders, and she felt naked, hot and sweaty skin instead clothing. Then she noticed she was wearing nothing but his haori. She bent over to whisper in his ear, because a whisper was all she had strength for.
“InuYasha,” she said weakly.
He felt her hand clutching him and came to a stop when he heard her voice. Carefully, he lifted her off his back and held her in his arms.
“How long was I out this time?” she whispered.
“Too long,” he groaned, sinking to the ground and holding her tight. “How are you feeling?”
“Tired,” she replied, “but don't worry. I'm not in any pain.”
“Kagome, I forbid you to use your new powers again, it's too dangerous for you.”
“I…have no control over them,” she said. “It just seems to happen in conjunction with any threat to you.”
He growled in frustration.
`That means being with me is dangerous to her health,' he thought.
He clutched her spasmodically, and his breathing became labored as he fought off the urge to cry. The anguish was burning him up inside. What could he do? He needed her like he needed air to breath, but he was somehow linked to these new powers that were draining her more and more each time they manifested. They needed help, and fast.
“I need some water,” she said softly, snapping him out of his worried thoughts.
He shook his head to clear his head, and got her some water from her backpack.
“We have to go,” he said. “Our only hope is to get you to Kaede. So get back on, we're leaving.”
She was too weak to argue. They continued on their journey, and InuYasha only allowed them brief breaks. Kagome would have liked to change into her clothes and have a hot meal, but he was adamant that they had no time to spare. His intensity and her continued weakness meant she did not fight him on the issue.
As Kagome dozed on and off on his back, InuYasha fueled his tiring body to make it continue at full speed by channeling his anguish, fear and desperation to spur him on.
By evening they had reached their destination.
“Kaede!” he bellowed as he rushed into the village.
Startled, the villagers looked up as he ran past them. Then he came to Kaede's hut and burst through the door. The old miko had just sat down for her evening meal.
“Ye gods InuYasha!” she exclaimed. “What be the matter?”
InuYasha's eyes were wild. He was covered with sweat and heaving with exhaustion. Carefully, he lowered Kagome from his back. At the change in motion, the girl slowly woke up.
“Kagome,” Kaede said going over to the young miko, “what has happened to you?”
“Something strange is going on,” Kagome said with a sigh as she sat on the floor. “It's a long story.”
InuYasha fell to his knees, exhaustion finally catching up to him. He keeled over, his head in Kagome's lap and fell asleep. Kaede looked at him with concern and then looked questioningly back at Kagome.
“He's been running almost non-stop for two days with no sleep,” she explained, gently pushing his long hair from his face.
“And what happened to your clothes?” Kaede asked.
Kagome blushed. “I guess I'll tell you from the beginning,” she said, and proceeded to tell the story, starting with Kikyo's death.
When she got to the part about the first time she and InuYasha made love, she stammered, blushing furiously. But the old miko had to know everything if she was going to be able to help them. She couldn't leave anything out. At least InuYasha was asleep as she recounted how the blue light seemed to be growing in intensity each time they made love. She knew InuYasha would be too embarrassed to hear her tell the old miko about them.
Kaede's face was grave when she heard about the hypothesized link between their love making, the blue light of energy, and Kagome's new powers, and her subsequent loss of consciousness and weakness. She had listened to the whole story intently and didn't interrupt.
“Let me think on this,” Kaede said finally.
The old miko turned to her cook pot and ladled some food into two bowls.
“Eat child, ye look pale,” she said.
InuYasha slept on as they had dinner. Kagome felt much better after the hot meal.
“There is a monk I know of,” said Kaede when they were done eating. “He is steeped in the knowledge of the Tantras.”
“The Tantras?” Kagome replied wonderingly.
“Yes, the Tantras are used by monks to tap into their spiritual power. It sounds to me that having sex with InuYasha has tapped into an unstable reservoir of spiritual power within ye, child.”
“I never knew sex could give me new powers,” she said blushing.
“Yes, it can. But ye don't know how to control it,” Kaede said, and stood up.
“I will send ye to this monk, but there will be plenty of time to discuss this further tomorrow,” said the old miko. “Ye should be safe here for the night. I will prepare a place for the two of ye to sleep.”
Once the preparations were finished, they dragged InuYasha over. Kagome changed into her clothes and unrolled her sleeping bag next to him. She covered him with his haori and lightly kissed his cheek before lying down. Kagome fell asleep thinking about tantras and sex and how they could be related to her new powers.
