Nonexistent Fairy Tale
Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha or any of the characters.
My wonderful helpers (Marissa and Alyssa) contributed their own ideas for plots and subplots for the rest of the story. I thank them.
‘What am I going to do?’ A woman sat in her kitchen looking about her and debating. ‘I’ll have to wait until Souta and Kagome get back from Inuyasha’s before I can decide anything for sure… Kagome does have one friend in foster care…Maybe…Souta has his best friend…If they’re gone then maybe…’ She threw her arms up in irritation. “If there is a God up there…Any at all I beg you…Please help me…” She slumped in her chair and resumed her contemplations.
The young miko hadn’t forgotten about her brother amidst her own problems. She had grabbed him and impatiently pulled him home with her.
“Sister…Why are we going home so soon? Plus, why are we walking?” The little boy asked in confusion while following his briskly moving sister.
She sighed and pulled his arm again. “Souta…I don’t have time to explain…I just can’t be around Inuyasha right now…” She forced back the sea of tears that threatened to fall and quickened her pace.
“Can we please slow down?” His short legs couldn’t keep up with those of his sister.
“No! We have to get home quickly. You know the streets aren’t safe at night!” She reprimanded politely. The small boy sighed and followed along to his home.
“Mama? We’re home!” The young female called upon opening her front door.
The woman in the kitchen’s face paled. She hadn’t expected her children to be home so soon. She meekly called out to them and they followed the sound of her voice.
“Mama we…” The girl stopped and her little brother smacked into her due to her unexpected halt. He rubbed his forehead in frustration and looked over to his mother. His brown eyes widened in shock.
“Kagome…Souta…Sit down. We have a lot to discuss before morning.” She didn’t look up from the table her eyes were fastened on. The children obediently did as they were told. They stared at the usually calm and collected woman who was currently in pieces.
“We…” Her voice cracked as tears fell. Kagome reached over to comfort her mother, but she pushed her away and began her tale.
“After your father passed away we began having money troubles…Jii-chan tried to help us out…But he alone couldn’t pay what we needed. Your father’s absence left a void in my heart. No matter how much I love you two, you could never fill that space.” Kagome and Souta nodded, fully understanding what the woman was saying. “I tried to pretend everything was fine for your sakes…But everything has caught up with me! The government is going to try to take you away from me! I just know it!” She hastily wiped her eyes as she made herself busy with making something to drink while they talked.
“Mama I don’t understand…We’re going to lose everything, then?” The girl asked uncertainly. Their mother nodded in response.
“I would choose your most precious possessions and leave the rest to be sold to help us. We will figure out a solution on where you two will stay. Jii-chan said he could only take one…And I will be going to stay with him, to return the help he’s given us all of these years.” She sighed as she brought the drinks over to her children. “I suggest that you start discussing things with your friends…Find somewhere to stay. I will get you when all of our affairs are sorted. I’m sorry if I sound heartless…It’s just the easier I make this…I’m hoping the less it will hurt. I love you both so much…” She paused to bring both of her children into hugs. “I don’t want to leave you…”
“Mama…Don’t worry! Everything will be okay!” Her daughter smiled meekly as she attempted to console her heartbroken mother. Her mother returned the smile halfheartedly and told her children to start going through their possessions.
Hours later Kagome Higurashi lay on her bed. She was staring at her ceiling as memories of her life in the house that had always been hers flashed before her eyes. She never thought she would leave until she went away to continue her educations. She thought it would always be here for her. Now, it would go to the government, along with everything her family owned, to pay off their debts. She was furious that her mother never told her…She would have gotten a job and helped even the tiniest bit! Then maybe she would feel better than she did now? ‘No…’ She shook her head. ‘I would still be losing my home. And the only thing worse than losing my childhood home is losing a strong bond of friendship!’ She sighed, praying that that wouldn’t happen to her either. She went back to sorting through everything she owned. So far in her pile of things to keep, she had her diary, her school stuff, two weeks worth of outfits, and a locket Sango and Inuyasha had given her for her thirteenth birthday. The locket was silver with a beauteously carved K on the front. She opened the clasp and frowned when she realized nothing yet was in it. She kept it in her fist as she moved on. She picked up her box of past memories and opened it. Inside were pictures of her, Inuyasha, and Sango as small children always smiling and always together. There were all the cards she had ever gotten for any occasion. She set the lid on the box and pushed it over to her “keep” pile. She put the locket around her neck; it hung just above her jewel, and swore she would find something to put in it.
While she was sorting through her room, she had an abrupt idea. ‘Miroku! He’s in foster care…Maybe his foster parents would take me in, too! Oh…But what about Souta?…’ She bit her lip in deep contemplation. ‘Oh! Sango! Kohaku and Souta are best friends…I’m sure Sango could take him in…Oh, how I hope I’m right!’ She thought she was done when she saw something glimmer at her in the corner of her closet. ‘I wonder what that could be…’ She walked over to it and pulled it out. She gasped. She realized it was the book of fairy tales that her father had given her…Before he had passed away. She hugged the book to her chest as new tears sprung from her eyes. She hesitantly opened the front cover and read her father’s messy handwriting.
‘My lovely daughter, I trust this book will lead you to dreams of greatness. You are my little princess…Remember that always. Those daring women in these tales are you. You will have your “happily ever after,” just as they have. Remember to keep the “pretty necklace” I gave you safe. Never let anyone have it. I love you forever and always.
-Daddy’
She stifled a sob as she read the encouraging words from her father. She barely remembered the man that he had been. Although the image of his face was burned into her memory. She would always remember what he looked like if nothing else. In addition, from him, she had the family heirloom of a jewel around her neck. She realized that it had more to it than just being a beautiful jewel long ago. On her fifteenth birthday, she had received a letter from a dear friend of her father’s. The old woman, named Kaede, had explained everything she could about being a miko. Kagome had even visited with her a few times and learned a few things. She had just never fully understood.
The young miko yawned and looked over at her nightstand. The alarm read 4:00 in large blue letters. She sluggishly crawled under her covers. She slept peacefully considering what news she had learned and dreamt she was the princesses in the storybook. That she got her “happily ever after.”
Kagome awoke to the feeling of someone shaking her shoulder. She moaned and rolled away from the nuisance. Whatever it was was persistent. They continued shaking her shoulder and muttered her name. She shrugged them off once more before she didn’t feel them shaking her anymore. She smiled contently in the realm between sleep and waking. When she was drifting back to the land of sleep, she felt swift movements around her stomach. She immediately woke and tried to stifle a series of giggles. She opened her eyes and was shocked by the deep amber orbs staring at her. Immediately, the devilish thrill of being tickled ended.
“Inuyasha? What are you doing here? I figured you’d be off with Kikyou.” She had to restrain from looking disgusted when mentioning the girl. He gave a soft warning growl to reprimand.
“For your information…I came by to see if you were okay…Your mother told me to wake you up.” He folded his arms over his chest and failed to realize the compromising situation of the two. Kagome however hadn’t failed to notice. She blushed madly and squirmed out from under the hanyou. Still oblivious he looked around her room.
“Kagome…” He started slowly, “Why is your stuff in piles and boxes?” He was hesitant to know the answer. He didn’t know what he would do if his best friend moved; he prayed that wasn’t the case.
“Well Inuyasha…” Thus, she began the tale her mother had told, while adding her plans.
“Kagome…I don’t know what to say…I’m so sorry!” He gathered his sniffling friend into a tight embrace. She sobbed against his shoulder. The hanyou truly was at a loss. He had dealt with Kagome and Sango for a very long time. All of their personal issues. This was something very new to him however. He did his best to comfort his best friend as she sobbed to her hearts content.
So…The title finally is laced into the story. Kagome has to leave her home and everything she loves. However, don’t worry! As soon as I can incorporate Hojo into the story, I have a hilarious little subplot to add in there. : ) Please Review! As usual, the exquisite Marissa edited this.
