Chapter 30

Starting to come to a close…

WARNING: Two funerals and a viewing. (I’m not really that good at funerals…I usually daze out at them…And I don’t have a religion…So I’m just going to base it off of funerals I’ve been to in the past couple of years…So bare with me!)

“Mom…” She couldn’t help but feel grief. Her mother had died! The woman, who had brought her into this world, was gone! “Mommy you weren’t supposed to leave me yet!” Her whispers drifted to the ears of the boy sitting next to her.

‘Poor Kags…But I know how she feels…I lost my Dad before I even knew him…And my mom at a young age.’ He put his hand on her knee in a consoling manner. He knew they weren’t supposed to talk, and he didn’t dare disrespect Mrs. Higurashi by speaking at her funeral!

She leaned her head on his shoulder and sighed. ‘Is this how he felt when his mother died, I wonder? I never understood before…I mean I understood how horrible it was…But I never knew the hurt of losing her. I just want my mommy back!’ She forced the tears to stay down.

At the front of the room was a lavish casket with a pale beautiful woman inside. Actually, it was a surprise they had waited so long to have the funeral, but it took a while to get all of the affairs figured out, since there was no one with money to pay for it. Emi had paid for it in the end, but she didn’t let Katsu or Kagome know that. It was her little secret. Her little contribution to the girl who had befallen so much heartbreak.

Kagome was barely there (mentally) through the rest of the ceremony. Inuyasha guided her outside when it was time to go. Her family- Emi, Katsu, Miroku, Shippou, Souta, as well as Sango and Kohaku- followed at a respective distance. Everyone was dressed in black. Not that the young woman would notice; she was gone now. In a better place. No one doubted that the woman had gone to heaven. She was the kindest-next to her daughter- person many had ever met.

She snapped out of her daze in time to see her mother’s casket lowered into the ground. She kept a stoic façade on the outside, while inside she felt as though she were empty. Next…Next, she knew was her Jii-chan’s funeral.

‘He was old, yes, and he would have died soon anyway, but it wasn’t his time! He wasn’t meant to go like that! He was meant to die peacefully in his sleep!’

The girl sighed and took off her heels. ‘I’m sorry, but my feet are killing me! Oh…Guess I shouldn’t put it that way…Umm…They really hurt!’

The rest of the day went on much as that. Everyone too quiet and paying their respects to the dead. After her mother’s funeral was her grandfather’s. Then the whole group went to eat a light supper at a nearby diner before making their way to Kikyou’s viewing.

The hanyou guided the girl to the front of the church and his heart jumped in his throat when she fell to her knees and broke down in tears before the dead girl.

‘Oh, Kagome!’

‘Kikyou! Here’s the girl that tried to kill me…But I forgive her. She was jealous of Inuyasha’s love for me. She hated me. But she did something I wouldn’t even do for my worst enemy. She saved my life. She failed in ending it, only to save me. But from what really? Some psycho crazed man out for a jewel? Why is the jewel so important!? Damn it Kikyou! I need to know!’
She hastily stood and wiped her eyes. She left the church. She left everyone behind. She needed to get away. She needed to clear her head. She had a lot of thinking to do…But to get the thinking done, she realized, she would need someone with her. Someone who was apart of her as much as she was apart of herself.

“Inuyasha…I don’t know…Do you think she’ll talk to us? I mean her best friend did just kill herself…” The girl stared hesitantly at the door the boy was knocking on.

“Don’t worry. If she refuses, we can always ask Kanna, her little sister.” She nodded her head and thought of how Kanna was friends with her little brother. ‘She’s an odd little girl…So pale…So white…So…So…Sesshomaru-like! Oh…That’s disturbing! Just what we need, another Sesshomaru in this world!’

“Hello? Oh- What do you two want?” Her tone was somewhat, angry and irritated. She leaned against her doorframe, irritated.

“Kagura…We need to speak about why Naraku tried to kill me.” Kagome looked at the older girl with pleading eyes. She hesitated a moment before allowing them in. She didn’t beat around the bush; she wanted them out of there- soon. She jumped right to the point.

“Naraku was after the jewel around your neck.”

“Hai, that I know.”

“Okay…Well I think he called it something like, The Shikon no Tama; the Jewel of Four Souls.” Kagome nodded her head enthusiastically.

“That’s it! I can vaguely remember my father calling it that! Do you know what it does, or what it’s for?” Kagura nodded her head.

“Have a seat, but don’t make yourselves comfortable. You’re leaving as soon as I’m done explaining.” The two teens winced at her harshness, but it was to be expected.

“The four souls described are those of courage, friendship, wisdom, and love. They unite to form a balance of power in the jewel. It can be used for either good purposes or evil. Apparently it can boost power or something…I don’t know…But I do know, it can be used once. For a wish. A wish either good or evil. It doesn’t matter to the jewel. Anything. Anything one would wish for would come true. Is that all you need to know?” She looked around nervously, not sure, why she was helping the two. It was actually quite odd…She was supposed to hate the two, wasn’t she? And why hadn’t Kikyou told her she was going to do that!? Why had she told her younger sister and not her!?

“Yes. Thank you Kagura.” The looked at the girl with sympathy, but she only frowned and pushed them out of her house.

“Get lost!” The door slammed behind them and they blinked at each other.

“Well, wasn’t that eventful?” She smiled and grabbed his hand.

“Inuyasha, I’m tired. Take me home?” He nodded. “Stay with me tonight?” His eyes widened slightly but he nodded to that as well. “Thank you.” She laid her head on his shoulder. “I really don’t know what I’d do without you.”

He laughed, “You wouldn’t be you without me.” She smiled, silently agreeing. “You’d be so lost; you wouldn’t even know your own name.”

“Oh shut up, would ya?” She giggled at his cockiness. “We’ll talk about this tomorrow. I don’t think I’m up for another funeral though…I know I need to go…But I don’t think I can…”

“I understand. Seeing your mother buried is enough to break a person…I would know.”

“Oh Inu, I know, I’m so sorry.” He smiled half-heartedly.

“It’s okay; it was a long time ago.” She nodded her head in understanding. And that’s how they stayed. Walking hand-in-hand, her head on his shoulder, walking down the street towards her home.

“Daddy, why isn’t Uncle Inu home yet?” The man dropped his newspaper and sighed at the girl.

“Rin, you asked me just five minutes ago!”

“Yeah, but that was five minutes ago! This is now!” She stood in front of him with an angry look on her face.

“I don’t know, he’s a big boy, he can take care of himself!”

“But I want Uncle Inu!!”

“You know what, fine! We’ll go find him!” He slammed his paper down and stormed through the house and out the door with the girl skipping happily behind him.

“Kagome!! Wake up!” A very male voice interrupted the girl from her dreams.

“Uhn!”

“Nope, time to get up!! Someone’s here for Inuyasha!” The voice faded away as it walked down the hall.

“I don wanna ge’ up!” She mumbled slapping in the direction of the door.

“Ow!” She blinked her eyes open.

“Did my pillow just say ‘ow’?” Now she was going crazy?
“Yeah, I’m your pillow, and you just slapped me!”

“Inuyasha? Oh! I’m sorry!” She giggled and kissed his nose. “Come on, I think he said someone was here for you-”

“Uncle Inu!!” They barely had time to look in the direction of the voice when the little girl came bounding into the room with speed to rival Inuyasha’s, and jumped on them.

“Oh, Uncle Inu, I missed you soo much!”

“Rin…I was only gone for the night…”

“Rin knows, and she had nightmares, and had to go to Daddy’s room! And he isn’t as comforting as Uncle Inu is!” He laughed and hugged her.

“Yeah…Because I’m the best uncle in the world, right?” She nodded and laid her head on his shoulder.

“Hello Kagome!” She smiled cheerily at the older girl.

“Morning Rin.”

“Is Kagome feeling okay today?” She may have known a little of what was going on, but she didn’t really know the people who had died, except for Kikyou, so she really didn’t know how Kagome was feeling. She smiled reassuringly at Rin.

“Yeah, now that you’re here! Now we can have fun picking on Inuyasha!” Rin’s eyes lit up with a mischievous light.

“Yay! And can we go visit Souta and Kohaku? And take Shippou with us?” She gasped and clapped her hands over her mouth. “Can we go to the water park later?”

“Of course we can go! Anything you want to do today, we’ll do…Only you had better ask Sesshomaru first…”

“DADDY!!” The hanyou winced at the volume as the little girl ran out of the room.

“Well…That wasn’t exactly how I wanted to wake up this morning…” He leaned down and kissed the girl next to him.

“Inuyasha! Could you please stop making out for one minute and tell me why the hell Rin wants to go swimming today?” He growled at his older brother’s impeccable timing and waved him away.

“You will not dismiss me! Tell me why my daughter is demanding to go!” Kagome giggled and explained how it was her fault. Thus resulting in Sesshomaru leaving the room and Rin left staring.

“What are you intentions?” The two teens looked at her in confusion, then at each other. They blushed and looked back at her.

“What do you mean?”

“What are you intentions with my uncle?”

“Uh…” Kagome blushed and tried to think of something. “Well…We…Umm…”

“Are you going to marry him? Because I was told that only married girls can sleep with their husbands and kiss them like that.” Kagome’s blush deepened to a surprisingly dark shade of red. She got out of bed and ran over to take the little girl’s hand.

“You know what Rin? Let’s go get some ice cream.”

“Ice cream for breakfast?”

“Yes.” She squealed and clapped her hands giddily and started chanting ‘ice cream’, completely annoying the girl next to her.

‘Marry Kagome?’ The look of shock never left the hanyou’s face. ‘Marry my best friend?’
