Prologue: How We First Met

“Why are you crying?” The little boy asked, his voice full of concern.

She turned around, startled and simply stared at him for a little bit before turning back around and letting more sobs escape her. She didn't want to talk to any one, didn't have the heart to talk to anyone really, all she wanted to do was forget what had happened earlier that day…

--Flashback--
“Give it back!” She cried trying to reach for the bear. The older boy simply smirked and held it high above him, taunting her.

“You want it? Come get it then.”

She jumped higher, and higher as tears began to form in her eyes. The teddy bear had been special to her, a gift from her grandmother on her second birthday. It had belonged to her grandmother when she was younger, so for Kagome, the bear meant more to her than anything she owned.

“Please, just give me my bear back,” she said, tears rolling freely now as the older boy waived it above him.

“You want it back?” He asked with a mischievous grin on his face. “Fine! Go get it!” He said almost laughing at her as he threw the bear onto the busy street.

She gasped as her eyes followed the bear as it flew high above her, landing in the middle of the street. She watched in horror as the cars shred the old teddy bear to pieces with their tires. There was nothing she could do now but cry harder.
--Flashback--

“Why are you crying?” The little hanyou asked again.

He had seen her in school before. She always looked happy and she always seemed kind and sweet. But the girl in front of him was not that little girl he knew from school. She was so... sad. He didn't like that. Seeing her so distressed made something inside him almost… hurt. He didn't really know her, but he knew her enough to not want to see her hurting like she was.

After what seemed like an eternity for both, Kagome finally looked up at him again, and this time, she turned around enough for him to see what she was hanging on to. He looked down at what remained of the teddy bear and noticed how she was hanging on to it... as if though it was the only thing that really mattered to her in the world. There wasn't much left but the head and part of its left arm.

His head tilted slightly to one side, just like a puppy's would, while the little soft looking triangles on top of his head twitched forward, giving the little girl his full attention.

“M- my grandmamma gave it to me. It was hers, she loved it, and she gave it to me.” Kagome said softly between small sobs as she held on to the pieces of the bear. “…and he- he just…“ she closed her eyes tightly, trying hard not to cry. She didn't want to remember anymore.

InuYasha could feel the anger in him rising. Who would do this to her? Who could be so mean and hurt her like this? If he found out, he was really gonna kick his ass into next Tuesday. He didn't care if it would get him into trouble with his parents.

And yet, that was not the only thing he was feeling at that moment. He also felt sad for her, he felt like hugging her, and telling her not to cry, but the feeling was just so foreign to him. He had never felt something like that for a stranger before.

Seconds passed by and he seemed torn between comforting her and trying to find the stupid kid that had hurt her so badly. But Kagome's hiccupped sobs broke through his thoughts.

“It- its okay,” he said softly as he walked closer to her. He put his little hand on her shoulder and gave her a smile.

They stayed like that for a little while until got an idea.

“Wait here.” He said with a boyish grin.

Before she had a chance to ask him anything, he had already left, running in the opposite direction.

She didn't have to wait long to find out what he had been up to. In less than 10 minutes he was back, holding something in his clawed hands.

“Here,” he said smiling as he handed her another teddy bear. This one was all white with a brown nose and golden eyes, just like his.

She seemed afraid to touch it. Why was he doing this?

“Take it, already. My mom gave it to me when I was a baby, but I'm too old for stuff like this now.” He was almost seven years old after all. Slowly, she reached out for it and took it in her small hands.

She ran her fingers through the soft fur and smiled. “Th- Thank you.” She said softly. For the first time she noticed the boy... really noticed him. His long silver hair, his amber eyes and the cute puppy ears on top of his head.

Nothing was said for a while, but they didn't feel uncomfortable. Then she broke the silence between them.

“Umm… my name is Kagome. What's your name?” She asked, her hands clutching both teddies.

“InuYasha.”

She smiled brightly, making InuYasha smile as well. “Umm... Well thank you, InuYasha.”

“Keh.” He replied, blushing, but only a little.

The sun was starting to set, and the soft rays showered the sky with all kinds of colors; pinks, reds, violets.

“Want me to walk you home?” He asked, almost shyly.

“Okay,” was her only reply.

He held out his hand to her and she gave him a timid smile, and blushed a bit as she took it.
