Chapter 4
Kagome's depression sunk deeper. She barely ate anymore, and when she did she would vomit later. Her mother watched on in agony. She didn't have a clue as to what to do about her daughter. But soon her mother came to realize it was the well. Every time Kagome saw or passed it, she would burst into tears. The well held too many memories, which were devastating Kagome's health.
A few months later they moved into a new house that had a different school. Maybe, her mother thought, maybe if Kagome had a new school and a new home she could start over. Well, that was lost the first day of school.
As always, Kagome got her book bag together, after another horrible night of crying. She walked leisurely to this `new' school of hers then entered the building. Students watched the new girl with interest. Most of the guys were already daydreaming about her. Most of the girls couldn't wait to make her part of their `group.'
Once she entered the hectic office, a woman, who she guessed to be a secretary, walked up to her and asked for her name.
"My name is Kagome…" Her voice sounded as if she were a drone and hardly concerned with anything around her.
"Oh yes, Hello Kagome. Welcome to Kage High school. We have a staff member coming to give you a tour of the school. His name is Mr. Higurashi.."
She looked down at her clipboard, a little confused, "Is he a relative of yours?"
Kagome stared at the woman, "No.. It could just be a coincidence."
The secretary sighed, "Well, he will be here in a few minutes."
She left Kagome alone in the office with students a teachers pushing past her to get things done. She just sighed and sat down on a chair.
About five minutes later a man walked up to her and kneeled down to be at eye level. He had blazing red hair, covered by a dark blue baseball cap. He looked to have fangs, but Kagome knew that it was just her mind playing tricks on her. Thinking too much of Inuyasha and her friends was causing her to have illusions. His olive green eyes stared into hers and an almost scary chill ran up her spine, that was when she realized who she was so close to.
"You must be the…" The man fell back onto his hands, acting like he had seen a ghost. The office stopped for less than a second to see the source of the sound, but soon got back to their work.
"Shippou?" Kagome squeaked out. "Is that really you?" Falling out of the chair she embraced him on the floor. "I missed you so much! I'm so sorry… I should have stayed…"
The kitsune just smiled and placed his hands on her back, hugging her back very discreetly. "I missed you, too."
Kagome was surprised. He was so handsome now. His eyes were much softer and his hair was a little bit longer. Only then did she remember Inuyasha. Shippou noticed the sudden change in her scent and sat up.
"Come on. We should go outside."
Kagome didn't like the sound of that. Why couldn't they just talk here?
"OH NO!!!" She screamed, already sobbing into her hands. "Please… no he can't be…"
Shippou was very stiff. People were beginning to stare and that wasn't good. He was already in trouble, and making a student cry might actually force him to lose his job. He quickly gathered her into his arms and took her to the schoolyard, where he placed her down in front of a tree.
"Kagome. He didn't die." Shippou said softly sitting down before her. "He just had some problems… when he tried to go back to you…"
Kagome was listening intently, vaguely aware of the presence behind her. Shippou knew he was behind the tree listening in, so he continued a little quieter than before.
"We were battling some weird looking worm demon, when he got hit. Inuyasha was slammed across the clearing and into the well, almost destroying it. I used foxfire and sent it away while I went to help him. He was unconscious. So… I pulled him away from the well and into some bushes. I smacked him a few times until he wasn't sleeping anymore. Then he smacked me back, running back towards the demon. We won… but Inuyasha was slower than usual. Miroku said we should go to the village for help, but he refused to leave the well. I stayed with Inuyasha as Miroku walked away and watched over him. Inuyasha seemed to be absorbed in the Bone-eaters well. Then he took out the Shikon Jewel." Shippou sniffed, trying to hold back a few tears. Being the overly protective surrogate mother she was, she embraced him, trying to comfort herself and him.
"He… he held it in his hands for a few seconds… then he gripped it hard. I kept asking him what he was doing but he ignored me and closed his eyes…That's when he fell to the ground. He was bleeding and I didn't even smell it!! It's all my fault!! I should have aided him but I just sat there and stared!!" Shippou couldn't take it anymore. He burst into tears and held onto Kagome as if she was his lifeline. Kagome could only think what they looked like. She was holding a grown man while he cried onto her shoulder. But in reality, she didn't care. Slowly, Kagome began to realize what he had said. It finally sunk in.
"He died?" She asked, her voice wavering as tears rolled down her pale face. Kagome pushed away from Shippou when he nodded. "No! I… we were supposed to meet up… he wasn't supposed to die!" She cried out, running away. That is, until she felt a clawed hand take hers, pulling her back to him.
"It's going to be alright Kagome." He whispered into her ear.
Kagome knew that voice. It was the voice that had scolded her for years, telling her how ugly she was, that she wasn't a good enough fighter, that he would be better off without her.
"Inuyasha?" She asked, afraid that she was wrong. No. She knew she was wrong. How could he be alive after what Shippou had just said? There was no possible way.
Her response was a chuckled then felt a man's hot breath on her neck as he whispered again. "It's going to be alright Kagome. I'm here now."
Kagome spun around and encircled her arms around his torso. Too excited for her own good she began to cry again.
Shippou watched on in horror. This was not supposed to happen!! Inuyasha glanced back at the kitsune and grinned. `So the little kit thinks he calls the shots. I don't need him anyways.' Thought Inuyasha while he hugged her back.
"What happened to…." Her eyes widened and stepped away from him. "You're not Inuyasha!"
Inuyasha's grin disappeared. "Yes I am. If I'm not him, then you need to talk to Shippou."
Her eyes stared into amber ones. They were locked in a gaze for more than five minutes. Each one, not daring to look away until Kagome gave up to look at the rest of this imposter's body. He was wearing jeans with a black shirt. This man looked like Inuyasha… he had the hair, the eyes, the claws, the ears. But something was different about him. Kagome could tell.
Inuyasah was still staring at her, however rude it might be. This girl reminded him of his girlfriend… but Kagome looked so much softer and delicate. `Bad thoughts bad thoughts…. Cold things… Antartica…. Polar bears… Kagome in a white t-shirt… NO!! Snow… snow is cold… ice cream… melted all over her body and me licking- GOD DAMMIT!!… I can't get hard..' His mouth had other ideas though.
Kagome didn't like the way he was looking at her, like she was a piece of meat.
"Damn you look good." He muttered before thinking.
"!….!" Kagome screamed slapping him across the face.
Shippou ran up to her, blocking her view of the man. "Kagome.. this is him.." He lowered his head, hoping he wouldn't be shouted at. He didn't want to make her angry; but she needed to know the truth. "I found Inuyasha a few years ago when he came to work here at the school. He is an incarnation."
Both of the men were uneasy at the silence and blank stare they were receiving from Kagome.
"What happened to Sango… and Miroku?" She turned to him, her eyes showing how much worry and confusion she had.
"They were humans Kagome. They died. But they did have six kids. Four boys two girls. Miroku was so happy…until the sixth one. Sango died having the sixth one, that was the second girl. Miroku named her Sango. I began to notice that he was having trouble after her death. He got so frustrated with things and shouted a lot. Not to the children thankfully. He just disappeared…"
Kagome took minutes to process this. When she did speak, her voice was a little chipper, though Inuyasha could tell she was hiding her pain. "I wish I could have been there. For everything…"
"Kagome…" He wrapped his arms around her in a loving embrace. "Don't regret your decision. It's not good to regret things." His hand was slowly rubbing her back, more for his own pleasure than hers.
Kagome ducked out of his hug. "What? How do you know all that?! How does he even know my name Shippou?"
"I told him everything about you, his former life… everything." The kit answered, looking slightly ashamed and guilty.
`So he knows everything huh? Well, I'll be the judge of that. I bet he doesn't even know who we traveled with.' She thought, her mind gathering questions for him.
"Inuyasha?" She was ready to quiz him on their time together.
"Huh?" Inuyasha raised his head at his name, now interested in what they might be talking about.
"How did I travel between the eras?"
The hanyou smiled at her, "The Bone-Eater's Well of course." Looking into her eyes, he thought, `I cannot wait to have your legs wrapped around my….' He shook the thought out of his head. No, he couldn't think that. He had a girlfriend who he loved, though Shippou despised her. He never understood why, and shippou would never tell him.
He was taken out of his thoughts when Kagome continued with her interrogation.
"Who traveled with us?"
"Shippou, Sango the demon slayer, Miroku the lecherous monk, and Kirara a demon cat. Anything else, bitch?"
Kagome clenched her fists. This was definitely him. No one dared to call her a `bitch'. The only person who ever did was Inuyasha. Her Inuyasha.
"MY NAME IS KAGOME! KA-GO-ME!" The miko didn't like how this was playing out. It felt like they were back at square one… but in a way they were.
Inuyasha rolled his eyes and pushed Shippou out of the way. A second later he had an arm around Kagome's waist and was literally pulling her along. "See ya later twerp."
Kagome was as stiff as a piece of cardboard. "What are you doing?"
"Taking you out for a bite... we need to get more acquainted with eachother."
"But why is your arm around my WAIST?!" She shouted at him, trying to shove him away, though it proved to be useless when he just tightened his arm around her.
"Because, bitch, I can and you can't do anything about it." He snapped back at her, putting emphasis on the word `bitch'.
"SIT BOY!"
