Kagome's heart stopped beating for a few seconds. She went cold and stopped in her tracks. Something happened, something bad. Kagome felt a faint warm hand on her cheek and it was gone.
Could it be? Could it be that her husband is gone and said his final farewell? All of a sudden she heard shouts coming from the outside and ran to see what was going on. She saw a soldier racing across the land and fell at her feet.
“What is going on” she asked him as she placed a hand on his head.
“My lady, the king, the king is gone, he died. His son stabbed him and said some things I would rather not repeat. He became angry and stabbed him. They both died next to each other. Queen Kagome, he fought a good fight. You would have been proud to see him wield the sword for Japan and you,” said the soldier.
“Where is his body?” she asked him.
“There are other two soldiers alive and they are still coming. I wanted to be here first to tell you the news. They should be here any moment,” he replied.
As he said, she saw soldiers coming into view. She saw that they were carrying her husband in a blanket. Perhaps they didn't have anything necessary to carry him in. She didn't mind. Kagome wanted her husband here and bury him properly.
They stopped in front of her and gently laid the king down. The men bowed and stepped to the side. Kagome walked up to him, praying that her stomach wouldn't betray her. The sight was horrific. He had a nasty puncture in his stomach was still pouring out blood lightly. She supposed that he already lost a lot of blood and it was near the end. Other than that, he looked peaceful and his complexion was light blue.
“Prepare him for the funeral. I am going to talk to Miroku to see where we can bury him,” she ordered. The men came back and went into the castle to a room to prepare his body.
Kagome walked to the tower and walked up the stairs. She knocked at the door when she was at the top. The wizard opened the door and he gestured her to come in. She went in and sat in the same seat where she sat not too long ago.
“I know that you have a place for him, a place where the High Kings go and be laid to rest,” she said and looked him straight in the eye.
“Yes, there is. But no one can ever know where it is. It's a place where nothing must be disturbed,” he told her.
“And why is that?” she asked.
“One day, when the world is in the dark, the kings would rise again and defeat the dark. Your husband defeated one, his son. There could be more in the future,” he replied.

Hojo was wrapped in a silk, golden cloak. He had the crown of the High King and even though he was dead, he still looked like a king with much power. Everyone in the kingdom was there in Kagome's eyes, except InuYasha. He was there, but was in the shadows. He was sad that his friend was dead and sad that he couldn't be there to comfort Kagome. He didn't think that she wanted him there. What he didn't know was that Kagome did want him there to console her.
The ceremony was long. Everyone reassured her that everything would be all right. Kagome made believe that she believed their words, but how can she when she felt the hole she was in was getting deeper?
When everyone was gone, Miroku and herself was alone, they put Hojo's body on a wagon, drawn by a horse. They traveled far until they arrived, what appeared to her, empty air. When Miroku said an incantation, a cave appeared. They entered it. It was no ordinary cave; it was a crystalline cave.
They arrived at the end and Kagome saw in awe at all the great kings that once ruled Japan. They walked further in and turned up at an empty space next to Hojo's father. It seemed to her that there were no more empty spaces; it was the only one.
“Why aren't there anymore spaces for the next High King?” she asked Miroku as he placed a glass casket next to Hojo's casket.
“It was foretold that the last High King would be a young one. They said that there would be no High King. The land would be divided among men. Oh, and don't worry, these crystals don't make them decay. They will stay like that until the day comes,” he explained.
Kagome nodded. Miroku placed Hojo's body into the casket. Before the wizard closed it, Kagome touched his face and kissed his cool lips. She started to cry and hugged him.
She pulled away and Miroku closed the lid. They stepped back and examined their dead king.
“I guess this is it, huh?” said Kagome as they were walking back to the outside world.
“Yes, I suppose it is,” answered the wizard.
“What will you be doing before your time comes?” she asked.
“I don't know. I may just stay in the tower and study astronomy. The universe is always changing, even as we speak,” he told her.
“I think I'll move into the country. I want to escape all this madness and what has happened these past few months. There are things I would rather forget. I guess this is good-bye. I hope we'll meet again,” she said.
“Until,” he agreed and went back to his tower.
