It took the letter the rest of Kagome's pregnancy to be in InuYasha's hands. He recognized Kagome's handwriting and tore it up. He fumbled to open the letter and read it quickly. Once he was finished, the paper fell from his hands. He couldn't believe it. She was pregnant with his child. She must be having the baby any minute.

 

He didn't bother to pack his things. He went straight to the stables and chose the fastest horse he had. He climbed on top and immediately went to the castle where he thought she still lived.

Kagome was seventeen when her labor broke. A gush of liquid escaped from below her and she held onto whatever was stable so she wouldn't fall. She screamed in pain. The servants that heard her rushed to her side and aided her to her bed. They called a doctor and he came right away.

 

“Get it out, get it out!” she cried. She started to sweat and the pressure in her belly was not a good feeling.

 

“We have to wait until you are fully dilated, my lady,” the doctor told her. He was answered with an irritated sigh. He chuckled.

 

It was a few hours later when the crown of the baby's head was showing. The doctor took position and started to do whatever doctors do to deliver a baby.

 

Kagome was told to push and breathe for fifteen minutes. After those long, agonizing minutes, they were rewarded with a baby's cry. But something went wrong, dreadfully wrong.

 

Kagome's breath was starting to get shallower. “Let me see my son, Cai, please let me see him.”

 

The doctor gave the baby and she held him. “I am so sorry that I won't be able to show you the world and what life can bring you. Although I am sure your father would do that for you, he is a great man in many ways. I know you will be very proud of him. I hope you will remember me, holding you in my arms when you first came into this world. I hope you will know that I love you very much and I will watch over you, making sure that everything is all right. I love you, my darling Cai.” Those were her last words.

InuYasha arrived at the castle a week after her death. Obviously, he doesn't know that yet. He was told that she as living out in the country, in a small cottage. He took off.

 

It took two hours to finally arrive. He smiled when he saw the view. He jumped off his horse and was running to the cottage. “Kagome, Kagome I am here, finally! How is everything? I missed you so much, Kagome…”

 

He was cut off when he saw solemn faces. He had a questionable look on the face. “What's going on?”

 

“I am sorry, Sir InuYasha. Kagome died during the childbirth. The pressure during the birth was too much for her body to take. But, she did deliver a son. She named him Cai. We know that she would love for you to take care of him and teach him the meaning of life and love,” said the eldest servant.

 

She brought him the child and the man started to weep. Cai was so small and fragile and beautiful. He would do anything for the boy. He would do what Kagome would do to raise him.

 

“Thank you Kagome, for this wondrous gift you gave me. I will raise our son right and love him, just like what you wanted me to,” he whispered to the heavens.
