Chapter 3: The True Betrayal
~*Last Time*~
"Sesshoumaru?!" Kagome gasped.
~*This Time*~
Kagome slowly backed away from the deadly demon lord. She strangely had a gut feeling that he wasn't here to do any harm. Kagome gave her friends a look that made them put their weapons down.
"This Sesshoumaru is here to propose an alliance." he said gruffly. Everyone's jaws, except for Kaede and Sesshoumaru, dropped.
"Why would ye want to do such a thing?" Kaede asked.
"I need not explain my reasons to humans." Sesshoumaru answered. Kagome glared at him. He smirked inwardly.
"The evil hanyou has been causing enough destruction in my lands, therefore I feel the need to dispose of him."
Miroku, the ever-wise one, said, "Why are you here telling us this when Inu-yasha isn't here?" Miroku said suspiciously.
"It seems the whelp is busy at the moment. Also, this Sesshoumaru believes that he would act harshly." Sesshoumaru said, getting impatient.
Kaede thought it over - it did benefit the group as Sesshoumaru was probably much stronger than Inu-yasha.
"How do we know that you won't betray us?" Sango said hesitantly. Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes.
"My honor would keep me from doing that. Though some other whelps don't have that, I do." he said, getting even more impatient.
"Agreeable." said Kagome.
"But," Sesshoumaru continued, eyeing Kagome.
"I require the wench to restore my arm." he said finally.
"Fine." Kagome snapped, annoyed at the name `wench'. Miroku seemed surprised, not knowing Kagome could do such a thing. Sango nodded towards Miroku, indicating she would explain later.
"Because Naraku, and we, are after the shards, you would need to come with us on the quest to retrieve the shards." Sango stated.
"Agreeable. Though this Sesshoumaru shall keep his distance from you and your pack. I do not see reason to defile myself with humans." he said. Sango nodded, knowing that the arrogant demon lord would say something like that. She hated to see what Inu-yasha would do. Kagome sensed her nervousness and mouthed, `Don't worry…' to her. Kagome looked questionably towards Sesshoumaru.
"When…?" Kagome asked.
"Now." he stated simply, walking out of the small hut. Kagome followed. Miroku made to follow them, but Sango and Kaede quickly stopped him. Kagome bit her lip as Sesshoumaru stopped. She had healed herself before, but she had never tried regenerating lost limbs. But she had a feeling if she forced enough healing powers in one sport, she could do it. Sesshoumaru stood there, waiting. She closed her eyes, put her eyes over his right shoulder, and concentrated on the reservoir of her powers. It had already been plentiful, but it was growing each single day. She moved the flow to her ands, changing it from purifying to healing. She allowed it to keep flowing, and she opened her eyes. The limb had suddenly reappeared.
~*Sesshoumaru's POV*~
Originally, I had not planned for the regeneration of my lost arm, but I was still curious to the extent of the miko's powers. Therefore, I said, `But, I require the wench to restore my arm."
I still remembered the fateful day when Inu-yasha had cut off my arm with the Tetsusaiga that the wench had pulled out by accident. I had started paying more attention to her since that day.
`Admit it - it wasn't because of her powers.' the annoying voice said.
`Correct. It was her strange, indecent clothes and attitude.'
`Nooo…." the voice said exasperatedly. `It was because of her kindness, beauty, defiance, and admit it - you like both the clothes AND attitude.
I growled inwardly. `You are incorrect. The reasons I stated were the only ones that sparked my interest in her.'
`Ya, ya, keep lying to yourself.' it said. I almost (AN: ALMOST!!) rolled my eyes, and I turned my gaze towards the miko. She moved her hands over my right arm - at least what was left of it. She then closed her eyes, and concentrated. I felt a tingling in my arm; it had suddenly reappeared. `Strange, I had always imagined it would grow back...it seemed the wench had was more powerful than I first thought…'
~*Normal POV*~
The pair stared at each other. Kagome smiled weakly.
"Ha….I knew it would work…" she mumbled as she fainted from exhaustion. Sesshoumaru was powerless trying to fight the extinct to catch her. Lifting her in his arms, he flexed his fingers, and couldn't help but marvel at her lightness. He carried her back into the hut. The humans didn't attack like he thought they would, but merely motioned towards a futon that had been set up previously for her. Sesshoumaru laid her down gently. (AN: *Gasp*! He's finally turning soft!) `It seems they aren't as dense as I thought they would be…' Sesshoumaru thought, sitting down next to Kagome, unconsciously taking a deep breath of her scent.
(One hour later)
Kagome groaned, and stirred out of her unconsciousness when she heard a strange noise. She cracked open one eye.
"Guys, I've made Kikyou my mate. I mean, Kagome is just useless, and she slows us down! Kikyou will be more useful." Inu-yasha said in his cocky voice, holding his arm protectively around the smugly smirking Kikyou. Kagome quickly got up.
"Why do I smell Sesshoumaru's scent?" Inu-yasha said suspiciously.
"It would be a shame to know that a hanyou can only smell someone when they are right behind him." Sesshoumaru said, appearing in the doorway.
"Sesshoumaru…" Inu-yasha growled as he put his hand on the hilt of the Tetsusaiga.
"Do you really need to remind me of my own name?" Sesshoumaru said calmly.
"Inu-yasha. Sit. (THUD!) Put the Tetsusaiga down. (AN: Please don't review saying my spelling is incorrect - I know for a fact it's correct. Tessaiga is ok, it's basically almost the same thing. I spell names (I think) with the "ou" because it's Japanese kanjii. Kirara, though pronounced Kilala, is spelt KiRaRa in Japanese. `Bell rings'. Ok, class is over!)
Sesshoumaru smirked at the hanyou was currently making friends with dirt and dirt. The spell wore off, and Inu-yasha pushed Kagome.
"Bitch, what did you do that for?" Inu-yasha said. `Boy, he doesn't know that I'm not offended by the bitch anymore…' Kagome thought.
"Sit. And that was because Sesshoumaru isn't here to kill us." Kagome said, not caring about the hanyou anymore. I mean, who would if he left you to go to a dead person? Talk about offended.
The spell wore off again, and Inu-yasha stood up.
"Then why is he here? To ask me to mate with him? Kikyou would never do this to me…" Inu-yasha grumbled.
"Sit. That one was for choosing the dead clay bitch. I mean, she steals people's souls, for Kami's sake! And you made her your MATE?! Ya, replacing me will do much good..." Kagome muttered.
"Feh. You're just jealous I chose Kikyou. I mean, who wouldn't? You're just a copy of her!" Inu-yasha said stupidly. (AN: Who wants to kill Inu-yasha now?)
Kagome blinked. And started advancing on Inu-yasha. Inu-yasha actually looked confused, because of the absence of tears, then he actually looked scared. For a moment.
"What are you going to do to me, wench? Poke me with your powerful finger? Sit me with the stupid rosary?" Inu-yasha smirked. "Kikyou." The undead priestess walked up to him, and made to take off the rosary. Kagome smiled inwardly when the rosary's power almost snapped off Kikyou's hand.
"Huh…?" Inu-yasha said stupidly, and Kikyou just stared confusedly at the rosary.
Sesshoumaru cleared his throat. "Sesshoumaru! What are you doing here?!" Inu-yasha yelled, pulling out the Tetsusaiga. Strangely, it didn't transform, and stayed like a rusted blade.
Inu-yasha blinked, this time we could call it a, "Dumb Blonde Blink." (No offense!! It just goes with the story!! If you've ever watched Whitechicks…well……)
"It would seem that because you're will to protect Kagome has diminished, the Tetsusaiga will not transform." Kaede said.
"Of course I don't want to protect the wench! I want to protect Kikyou, not like she NEEDS protecting." Inu-yasha said. Sango wacked Inu-yasha with her boomerang, fuming with anger.
"Dumbass! How could you choose a clay BITCH over Kagome?! And of COURSE it won't transform! Kikyou ISN'T EXACTLY HUMAN!!" Sango yelled, walking outside to take her anger out on something else.
"Kikyou IS human!" Inu-yasha said from the floor. Even Sesshoumaru seemed to be getting seriously annoyed. But, shockingly, before Sesshoumaru got to the hanyou, Kagome did. She picked him up by his neck.
"Listen." she said calmly, ignoring the sputtering Inu-yasha. She glowed for a second, and Kikyou, who was in the process of nocking an arrow, sank to the ground in a dead faint. (AN: Pun not intended. And yes, this is all inside the hut, people!) Inu-yasha managed to mutter, "Kikyou!". Kagome loosened her grip on his neck just a little so he could breathe a little easier. She ignored the claws digging at the tender flesh of her hand.
"Kikyou this. Kikyou that. I wonder everyday why I even started to fall in love with you. Have you ever thought of people's FEELINGS?" Kagome said, still calm. Inu-yasha's ears flattened to his head.
"You know why Kikyou couldn't take off the rosary? Maybe it's because I'm not her reincarnation!" she spat the last word out, finally getting tired of everything. She threw Inu-yasha against the wall.
"Kikyou will not be joining the group. If she does, I'm leaving." Kagome said simply. It wasn't because she hated Kikyou - she was sure it would be a nuisance of Kikyou trying to kill her. Underline try.
"If you go, okaa-san, I'm going with you." Shippou said instantly, hopping into Kagome's arms. She smiled warmly at him.
"Shippou, go outside with Sango, ok?" Kagome said. Shippou nodded, and hopped out.
Inu-yasha growled. "Feh. Fine! Leave for all I care! Kikyou HAS to join! And she would do much better than you anyways!" Kagome suddenly reached out her hand, and Inu-yasha flinched back, expecting her to slap him. But, instead, she caught the arrow that had been flying towards her back. It turned into dust, at Inu-yasha's feet.
"If Kagome-chan is leaving, so am I." Sango said, walking into the hut.
""If the 2 beautiful ladies are leaving," Miroku said, suddenly getting nervous from the glares he was receiving from everyone. "I am too."
"Sesshoumaru? Why are you here?" Inu-yasha said, out of the blue. (AN: Talk about short term memory…)
"He was HERE to propose an alliance. But I'm afraid he wouldn't want to join a group with a cocky, arrogant, egotistical baka and an undead miko, would he?" Kagome said, looking towards the amused Sesshoumaru, who was currently leaning against one of the walls of the hut, with his crossed arms. He had a look of boredom on his face.
"I believe not. The stench would kill me." Sesshoumaru said. The `couple' glared at him, but it didn't affect him at all.
"What?! You aren't joining the group!" Inu-yasha said, enraged. "He'll kill us all when we sleep! You really believe the guy?!" Even Kaede almost fell over.
"It seems ye have hit your head too much times." Kaede mumbled…
"We just said we're leaving." Kagome said, a tick in her eyebrow.
"Oh…ya!! Fine, I'll travel with Kikyou! I'm sure we can find the shards faster!!" Inu-yasha said, getting up, giving a loving glance towards Kikyou.
"Fine. Inu-yasha and I will go travel by ourselves and acquire the jewel shards. Give me the shards, bitch." Kikyou said emotionlessly, not like she could show much.
"Excuse me? I'm the one who's the protector now, and I'm keeping the shards. If you have anything to say to it, I'll gladly take the piece of my soul back." Kagome said, meaning it. Kikyou's eyed actually widened.
`She can't…I better not. Naraku would not be happy, and I would not be with Inu-yasha.' Kikyou thought. "Fine." Kikyou said, grabbing Inu-yasha's arm and dragging him out of the hut.
"Ok, that was just weird." Kagome said promptly. "I need to go back home now. Ja!" There was an anime-styled sweatdrop on Sesshoumaru's head. Kagome skipped merrily out of the hut. Shippou, Miroku, and Sango reappeared in the hut.
"How can she be so happy after all that?" Miroku said, still clueless. Shippou had already learnt about his okaa-san's powers, and her feelings towards Inu-yasha, so he hadn't been surprised at the very least. Except he didn't know about the part about Kagome being a demon.
"Women." Sesshoumaru muttered, walking out of the hut, hopping into a tree, albeit gracefully, and waited until they started hunting. Otherwise, he was waiting for Kagome to return.
(The Next Day)
Kagome hummed happily as she walked towards the well shed. She was dragging her pack, and her father was holding a giant canvas bag filled with wrapped gifts towards it. Kothana was walking with them, holding Kaemon's spare hand. Her family had already exchanged the gifts, even though it was still early, knowing that their Kagome probably wouldn't be able to make it for Christmas. She had received a beautifully handmade card by Souta, and a teddy bear, him claiming that, "It's girly enough! Ewww…don't hug me!!" Kagome had hugged him anyways. Kagome, always the nice one, not knowing what to get for Sesshoumaru, got him a silk obi with a nice pattern on it that matched his own kimono. Also, she brought him a few cups of Ramen, hoping that the brothers would be alike in THAT area.
Her mother had given her a necklace, that had the symbol of the South on it. Surrounding it, were the other symbols of the other lands - the central, the north, west, and east. They were all jewels. Kagome had hugged her mother tightly on that one, quickly putting it on. She had gotten a "mummy's hand" from Grandpa. He claimed that it would give her good luck in the Feudal era. Not sure what to do with it, she thanked him politely, happy that he at least thought of her well-being. And finally, from her father, he had given her a `hair clip'. It wasn't exactly one - it held up your hair and all, but it was a weapon also. There were diamonds and sapphires at the end, but if you pressed the red one in the center, a deadly dagger popped out. If you pressed another jewel, a steel fan would pop out.
Kothana and Kaemon had spent the last few moments before Kagome's departure teaching her the basics of her powers, and how to use her weapons. She still didn't know how to use the sword - they had said that there was no need for it yet, thought hey could teach her later on. Both were very proud at the progress Kagome was showing. Her father handed her the bag, and Kagome slid open the door of the shed, and Kagome jumped in first. They had agreed on letting Kagome going in first, so she could direct the others away from them. 1 hour later, the couple could go in, and they could directly go to the Southern Lands. Kagome had been given the choice of coming with them, but she had said that it was her duty to complete the jewel - she HAD broken it after all.
Therefore, she had hugged her two parents, and started walking towards the village.
(At the Village)
Sesshoumaru sniffed the air lightly - Kagome was back. Though…there was something different about her scent, but he couldn't place it. One reason why he didn't like the presence of humans was because of their stench. They rarely bathed, and they smelt of death, bodily fluids and waste, and dirt. But the humans of the group were a bit different. The taijya's (sp? I forgot….silly me) scent smelt of apples, but different in a way. She had only a small scent of death on her - signaling the coming of her death, though it would seem she would live a long life - for humans.
Demons never had the scent of death on them, unless they WERE dead or unless they had the scent of a dead person on them. Sesshoumaru knew not about the death of the skin cells on a person, but he did know that the thicker the scent, the shorter the life span. The monk's scent was of grass, and a bit of nature, but still had the little scent of death on him. They were strange, in a way - their scents were so much different than the other humans.
But then came Kagome. She didn't have the slightest scent of death on her. Even when he had first met her. Her scent smelt of lilies, and some other flowers that Sesshoumaru couldn't name. It was mixed with a pure and minty smell. When she got angry, it was even more intoxicating, as there was an extra sweet smell added. To say that Sesshoumaru was just interested in her would be a lie. He had never felt this way before about anyone…(AN: Can you guess what it is?! Lol…)
His ears twitched a little when he heard someone walking up the pathway, but Sesshoumaru stayed in the tree he was staying in. Judging by the conversation he had heard about the "Cris - mis", he thought that he would have to wait a minute.
"Sesshoumaru?" Kagome said hesitantly. He tilted his head towards her, silent.
"Would you like to come in? I got you something too. Also, it's cold out here." Kagome said.
"This Sesshoumaru is not affected by the cold." he said, but he still hopped down from the tree and grabbed one of her bags. Being the gentleman he was, he carried one of them inside and set it down. Then, he leant against the wall. `Why did she get a present for me?' he thought.
The members of the Inu-tachi (other than Inu-yasha and, now, Kikyou of course) had rushed to find suitable presents for everyone during the time that Kagome had left. Sango had just gotten something that she had always thought she would give to Kagome someday, Miroku had quickly visited his old friend, Kaede had simply prepared something, and Shippou had started drawing. Even Sesshoumaru arranged something to be fixed - he finally caved in on his conscience…but I won't tell you what it is yet.
Kagome was thinking about the conversation she had had with her parents while she was waiting for everyone to come in.
(Flashback)
"Okaa-san, otou-san?" Kagome asked, worried about everything.
"Yes, Kagome?" Kothana said, and Kaemon just nodded at her. It was dinner time, and Souta had just finished and gone upstairs to play video games after the parents explaining everything.
"What…do you think of me telling my friends about my identity? I mean, they should know about it…they ARE my friends…" Kagome said.
The adults looked at each other, knowing it wasn't in Kagome's nature to lie to anyone.
"Ok, but just make sure that no enemies find out. The South has many allies, as well as enemies that would love to capture or kill you." Kaemon said seriously.
"Hai!" Kagome said. She excused herself to her room to pack the supplies. `Maybe I'll tell them after I give them the presents…hai, that could be a "gift"!' Kagome thought cheerfully.
(End Flashback)
Finally, Shippou walked in, holding something. Kagome looked around surprised, since everyone had packages with them. `They must have gotten it while I was gone…' Kagome thought.
"Well, Shippou, here's your present." Kagome handed him a nicely wrapped box of chocolates, and inside there was also a bag full of lollipops and other candy. He quickly tore it apart, and squealed. Launching himself at Kagome, he said, "Arigato, okaa-san!" Kagome smiled.
"Just don't eat too much in one day!" she reminded Shippou, who was already feasting on one.
Shippou swallowed the chocolate, and handed Kagome a picture of herself. It was done in a box of crayons, and she was drawn under the rainbow.
"Aw…how sweet! Arigato Shippou!" Kagome give the little kit a hug. Miroku cleared his throat.
"I have gotten something for you too, Kagome-chan." Miroku said as he pulled out a quiver, a bow, and arrows.
"I put a spell on them, so you will never run out of arrows. They will always magically reappear." Miroku said fondly, handing her the gift. Kagome smiled, and reached to hug him. And everything screeched to a halt when she felt a hand on her ass. "HENTAI!!" Kagome shrieked, and wacked him in the head. She quickly let go, and gave him the evil eye. He just smiled dreamily and sat down next to Sango, who then wacked him, and started edging away from his prying hands.
"Miroku, I brought some notebooks, and ofuda papers for you. I also brought you a calligraphy set, so you can carry around the brushes and ink all the time!" Kagome said, handing him a package. He smiled genuinely at her and said, "Arigato."
"Kagome-chan, I really didn't know what to get you, but I thought you might like this." Sango handed over a few small hair clips, similar to the one she received from her parents. Though it seemed that the style was different. Kagome grinned, and pulled Sango in for a hug. Kagome handed her a package full of hair care things - hairspray, the hairties, and the works. She also gave her some polish for her boomerang.
It ended up like this: (I won't go on forever) Kaede got a herb "organizer" thing, Kagome got herbs helpful for the journey, and thank yous were said. It was already (AN: Am I boring you? It seems the presents part was a bit…dull) late in the night, and Shippou was asleep. Kagome had brought back some food from her time, and that had turned out to be dinner. Kagome had handed to Sesshoumaru her gift, and he thanked her gruffly. She had also cooked some ramen, which Sesshoumaru had said, "It is acceptable." Kagome just grinned, knowing anything that was `acceptable' for the demon lord was good. He had finished about 3 cups.
Sesshoumaru, much to the surprise of everyone, had handed Kagome a package. No one had even noticed him move from the tree! She had opened it, to find several silk fighting kimonos. She had almost (the magic word…) hugged Sesshoumaru - they were so pretty!
Kagome gently shook Shippou awake. "Guys…?" she said, nervous about their reactions. She was thinking about Sango - she was a DEMON slayer, though they already thought of each other as sisters.
"Guys…I have something important to tell you…" said Kagome looking at the floor. Everyone looked at her. (AN: Guess when the chapter's ending? don't kill me!!) "I'm a demon." IF YOU REVIEWED LAST CHAPTER, PLEASE LOOK AFTER THE LITTLE…CONVERSATION!
