Chapter 12: Split Up

Inuyasha looked around the battlefield ready to attack should another demon show up. As he waited, he glanced toward the other members of the group.

After they had dealt with the small fries, many larger demons had come out. Shippo had quickly run out of sticky stones and they now had no idea where to find the creatures.

Attacks had come quickly and, with no way of seeing the attackers, the group couldn't fight back.

At the moment, they were regrouping and checking for injuries. Everyone had at least a couple scrapes and bruises but seemed to be mostly all right.

InuYasha looked at the sky. Black clouds were gathering overhead. He could smell rain approaching.

“Here they come.” Said Keiko, drawing her bow. She hadn't needed to say that. Even those without miko or demon senses, could here the large creatures moving through the forest in front of them.

Several trees crashed to the ground as three tremendous, demon shaped tunnels appeared in the woods. The group prepared themselves to fight.

Before anyone could move a streak of lightning cut through the sky followed closely by a deafening roar of thunder. Keiko smiled.

“Perfect. When they get wet we'll be able to see them.” As if on cue, the sky opened up, drenching them in an onslaught of rain. Just as Keiko had said, the group could now make out three collections of rain that floated in mid air.

However, as they moved to attack, the soaked demons turned and moved off in separate directions.

The group members looked at each other.

“Um… now what?” Miroku questioned.

“They'll be headed back to their den.” Replied Keiko. “We should follow them. Let's see… Miroku. You and Sango take the one on the right. Jin and Chieko can take Apple after the one on the left. Inuyasha and I'll take the center one.” She paused as everyone mounted. Shippo joined Sango and Miroku on Kirara. “Alright, we meet back here in two hours whether you've found the den or not. If you do find the den don't enter alone. Come back here so we can go together.”

Everyone nodded and went off in their separate directions. Keiko broke into a run after the center demon. She followed the path of broken trees for about three minutes and was nearly out of breath. She looked back to see if InuYasha was behind her. He wasn't.

Looking forward again, she saw a blur of red coming back toward down the path. InuYasha stopped a foot from her with an irritated look.

You humans are too slow. I've already been to the monster and back by now.” He turned and bent down motioning for her to get on his back. “Get on. We'll go much quicker this way.”

Keiko looked at him inquisitively and got on to his back. In an instant they were in the air, leaping from tree to tree. Had they not been in a hurry, Keiko would have loved to stop at the top of one of the trees and look at the view but that wasn't an option at the moment.

Soon they reached the invisible giant. They had to stay a bit behind him as to avoid the trees crashing to the ground around them.

The storm was worsening by the minute and even InuYasha's vision was being impaired.

The path was thinning. It seemed that they were moving onto some kind of natural land bridge between two deep gorges.

All of a sudden, a bolt of lightning struck one of the last trees that hadn't already been knocked away by the demon. It was a large oak and as it fell, InuYasha new he'd never make it over the multitudes of branches jutting out every which way. The only way to escape was to jump to the side, into one of the deep ditches.

With no other choice, Inuyasha leapt to the right. As he fell, he pulled Keiko around in front of him and wrapped his arms around her so as to keep her from hitting the hard ground below them.

They hit hard. Even though Keiko hadn't come in contact with the ground, she had certainly felt the impact. But it wasn't over yet. The ground was still sloping and the two began to roll downward. They separated from one another as they continued down the slope, hitting rocks stumps and roots along the way.

After what seemed like forever, the ground evened out and they came top a rest at the bottom of the gorge.

They lay still for a moment. Then, InuYasha slowly got to his knees. He looked over at Keiko who was still trying to catch her breath.

“Kagome, are you alright?”

Keiko looked up at him. “What?”

“Are you alright?” he repeated.

“Yeah, I'm fine I guess. But… What did you call me?”

“Huh? I called you… Keiko. Didn't I?”

“No. You called me… Kagome.”

“Oh! I did? Sorry, I meant…Keiko.” InuYasha was a bit flustered now. After what Jin had told him about people who lose their memories, he wanted to be sure that Kagome remembered everything on her own. He couldn't allow himself to give another slip of the tongue.
