Chapter 15: Fear of Heights
`Okay… so my name is Kagome. But… no that's not it. There's something missing, another part… err… Okay, I'll come back to that.'
Keiko sat in the clearing as the sun rose. The dream had left a lot of questions for her to answer.
Where were her mom and Souta and grandpa? Why weren't they looking for her? How had she gotten here? What was she doing in a river? Who exactly were Kouga, Naraku, Kagura, Sesshomaru, and Kikyo? Why did she feel jealous when she thought of Kikyo? What was there between her and InuYasha?
Yes, InuYasha was a big question. Throughout the swirl of… memories?… InuYasha had come up the most. Sometimes he'd been hanyou and sometimes human. There was even one view of him that was different then she'd ever seen him: red eyes, longer claws and fangs, and purple stripes on his face. It scared her.
As she sat thinking her head started to hurt. “Ugh! I could really use some aspirin right now.”
“Some what?”
“Huh?” she spun around to find InuYasha sitting behind her. “InuYasha! Um… I… I just have a headache. That's all. Are Chieko and Jin back yet?
“No, but we don't have time to wait. Miroku and Sango got a location on the demon colony. If we hurry we can take a round about route and sneak up on them from behind.”
Keiko nodded.
InuYasha turned to the sleeping couple. They looked very peaceful curled up side by side, Miroku's arm around Sango's waist. It was the perfect picture… too bad.
“Miroku! Sango! Wake up! It's time to go! You too Shippo!” he called to the kit sleeping next to Kirara.
Within a few minutes they'd eaten a small breakfast of dried meat and fruit, and gotten everything packed up.
As Miroku, Sango, and Shippo climbed onto Kirara, Keiko looked around for Apple. Then she remembered that she'd sent him with Jin and Chieko. “Um…”
Before she could ask where she would ride, InuYasha crouched down in front of her. “Get on.” He ordered. She did so and he called to the others, “Let's go!”
Keiko braced herself for InuYasha's burst of speed but wasn't ready to find her self suddenly in the air leaping from tree to tree. She looked over to see Kirara flying beside them.
After getting over the initial shock of going up she decided to look down. Bad idea. They were over a hundred feet in the air. Keiko didn't remember ever being afraid of heights (though she hadn't been above ten feet up since before she lost her memory) but suddenly she started feeling dizzy and faint.
InuYasha didn't know what Kagome was doing on his back. In the past she'd always clung to him, staying perfectly still so he could focus on what he was doing. Now, she was starting to sway and he was having trouble keeping his balance.
“Keiko are you alright?” Sango called from Kirara.
Keiko didn't respond but InuYasha realized something. `She isn't Kagome. Well she is but she doesn't remember it. She's never ridden me before.'
The thought came too late. As he reached back to hold her steady, her weight disappeared from his back. He looked down, horrified as Kagome fell toward the trees.
Changing direction in midair he dropped through the trees after her. He caught her only a few feet from the ground and fell to his knees clutching her to his chest.
He was rocking her back and forth as Kirara came down beside him with the others. The image of her falling spinning through his head a thousand times over.
After a moment Sango came over and rested her hand on his shoulder. “Is she alright?”
“I think so” At this Keiko started to stir.
She blinked up at them a few times, then started to sit up but instantly fell back to lean on InuYasha. “What happened?” she asked, bringing a hand to her forehead.
“You fell. Are you feeling alright Keiko?” Sango asked.
“I don't know. I felt really dizzy and faint when we were in the air. It was like I was afraid of heights or something but I don't know why I would be.”
Miroku then asked, “Have you ever been afraid of heights before?”
“Not that I remember. No… wait, I… I think it may have something to do with how I lost my memory. I… I think I fell… or something…”
Miroku and Sango exchanged glances, silently agreeing to ask Inuyasha about some things later.
Keiko once again tried to get up. She was almost to her feet when she fell again. Inuyasha caught her neatly and set her on the ground. “Ugh! But head is killing me. Forget the aspirin, I need a sedative.”
“Huh?” everyone else chorused.
“Never mind, I just need some sleep.”
“We can't sleep now. We've got to keep going.” Inuyasha said but Keiko was already half asleep.
“InuYasha,” Miroku cut in. “Why don't you stay here with Keiko. Sango, Shippo, and I will go ahead and you can catch up later.”
InuYasha open his mouth to protest but decided against it and gave in. Shippo, Miroku, and Sango remounted Kirara and took off into the air.
Once out of earshot, Miroku leaned over to Sango saying, “We'll talk to him later. I have a feeling that perhaps he was right. Keiko may just be our Kagome.”
Sango nodded and Miroku leaned back again sliding his hand over her backside in the process.
“Hoshi-sama?” Sango turned toward him, a too sweet smile on her face.
“Yes Sango, dear?” replied Miroku getting a bit nervous. She only called him Hoshi when he was in trouble.
“Just because we're married now, doesn't give you the right TO RUB MY ASS WHENEVER YOU FEEL LIKE IT!”
Miroku appeared to have shrunken slightly under her angry glare. “Does that mean I can still rub your ass sometimes? Like when we are engaged in passionate…”
*SMACK*
“Hentai!”
Meanwhile, Shippo stared at the pair with innocent curiosity.
