Chapter Six: Down The Well Again

Kagome waited all day for her family to clear out and give her some Kagome time. When they finally left it was thirty minutes until her date with the young doctor Kowari. Nevertheless Kagome had decided to go down the well that day. She went into the well house and pried the boards off of the well covering. She stared down into the inky darkness that hid the bottom and felt the first stirrings of nervousness. "Well, down the proverbial rabbit hole." She took a deep breath and jumped in eyes shut tight. She had the strange sensation of floating in nothingness and then she hit the bottom. "No broken bones, how surprising." She climbed out of the well and heard voices coming from the left.

"Kagome's here I can smell her!" declared a deep voice.

"Inuyasha please your to weak to be up right now. It's probably another delusion." Pleaded a second female voice.

"No it's real this time I'm sure." Insisted Inuyasha.

"You better be right this time dog breath." Came a third voice. Kagome sat on the edge of the well and watched as they emerged from the trees.

"Kagome!" they cried in unison rushing forward. Inuyasha got there first and reached for her but Kagome stopped him with a look. "What's wrong Kagome?" he asked.

"Just being cautious. I mean if Naraku could trick both you and Kikyou then who's to say he isn't trying to trick me now?" she stood up and walked around lip of the well. "There is one way to prove its really you." She stopped in front of Inuyasha and tugged on some of his hair. "Sit." Inuyasha did a face plant and Kagome giggled. "That was fun."

"Fun." Growled Inuyasha. "You think that was fun?!"

"Pipe down or I'll do it again."

"Who are you?" asked Inuyasha disgusted.

"I'm Kagome Higurashi and no longer the pushover once was. Get used to it." Inuyasha stared at her openmouthed. Suddenly he lifted his face to the sky and sniffed the breeze that passed through the clearing. A strange look settled on his face for a brief second then was gone. "She's here isn't she? Kikyou?" Inuyasha shook his head. "Don't deny it. I relived all my memories of this place in two days. I know that look and I'm fucking tired of it." Kagome's voice was steadily rising.

"Ka… Kagome."

"Well what are you waiting for? Go running to her like you always do. You can't just not see her remember? You're drawn to her."

"But I'm drawn to you more."

"That's a load of bull and you know it. That's all right though; give Kikyou a message for me. Tell her I'm sorry I couldn't see her today but to stick around I want to talk to her." Kagome gave an Inuyasha like smirk, "I have to go or I'll be late for my date; you stick around too Kouga I talk to you next time I come through." She hopped back through the well.

"I think she was serious, so one of you give Kikyou her message. I'm going after Kagome." Inuyasha jumped into the well. He caught Kagome just as she was leaving the well house. "What do you mean you have a date?" he growled.

"I mean exactly what I said." Kagome whipped around. "Maybe it was once but my whole life is no longer in the past and my whole world no longer revolves around you. Do you know how much pain I went through when every time she came around and you ran to her? You were always vowing to protect her, professing undying love. News flash Inuyasha she wants to kill you, and she's on Naraku's side. You've always been blind to what was right in front of you. Me. Now I'm not spending all my time in the feudal era, I've got a life here and I'm going to live it. Now stop interfering with my life or I'll sit you until your back breaks!"

"Fine be that way. I don't need you anyway." Inuyasha climbed into the well but instead of going through he held on to the edge and hung there until Kagome left the well house before climbing back out. Silently he watched as Kagome primped for her date with Ginta. She rushed over to the café on O'Rourke Street; she arrived a few minutes late. Ginta was waiting for her leaning against a dark blue convertible

"Sorry I'm late." She said with a stunning smile.

"No problem. I haven't been here long. So I was thinking we could stroll around the mall or something."

"Great idea. Just let me run into the café for a sec."

"I'll go with you." They walked into the café. Inuyasha eyed the car with mistrust and distaste. Against his good judgment he climbed into the back seat and hid on the floor. He'd borrowed some clothes and a cap from Kagome's house so he could follow them and make sure that this guy didn't try anything with his Kagome. Kagome and Ginta came back a moment later and climbed into the car laughing. Inuyasha shuddered and curled into a ball when the car started moving.

When they got to the mall the bought some Ice cream and strolled around. Every now and then they would dart into a store and come out with a bag or two. Ginta bought Kagome a flower and tucked it into her hair. They stopped to see a movie blissfully unaware that they were being followed. "I had a great time Ginta." Said Kagome as he dropped her off outside of the shrine.

"I had a good time too. Except I had this weird feeling that someone was following us all day." He replied.

"Oh you're just paranoid that when you're out with a beautiful girl like me a whole bunch of jealous guys will jump you." Teased Kagome.

"Will they?"

"Well there was one guy, but I got rid of him. Bye Ginta." Kagome kissed him on the cheek and hopped out of the car. "Maybe I'll see you again sometime."

"I hope so." Ginta said before he drove away. Kagome floated blissfully towards the house but stopped when she detected a figure standing in the shadows.

"Inuyasha?" she asked uncertainly.

"So how many other guys are you seeing behind my back." The figure stepped forward. It was Shoji.

"It's sort of hard to see someone behind your back when we're not dating Shoji. I told you, you're a psycho and I want nothing to do with you." Said Kagome.

"But you forget what you told me Kagome. You're a poison and I need the cure. Or are you poaching for older guys now? Just how many hearts have you broken Kagome?" he moved forward and grabbed her.

"Obviously I never broke yours Shoji. You don't have a heart for me to break."

"Don't talk to me like that." Whispered Shoji furiously before pressing his lips to hers. "Don't you know what you've done to me? Night and day you're always on my mind. So I thought the only way to get you off my mind is to get rid of you see." He grinned recklessly. "So we're going on one more date then I'm going to kill you." Kagome scrubbed her lips with the back of her hand.

"Eww, now I have to brush my teeth like ten thousand times to get rid of your filth." She complained.

"My filth will be the last thing you'll ever know." Shoji began to drag her away.

"I'm not going anywhere with a psycho like you. How many times do I have to say that?" she dug her heels into the soft ground. Inuyasha dropped from the roof of the shrine in front of Shoji.

"Let her go."

"Who are you?"

"I'm Inuyasha."

"Just how many guys are you stringing along bitch?" he asked Kagome. With a growl Inuyasha picked Shoji up by his shirtfront.

"Only I can call her that, got it?" Shoji nodded. "Get out of here before I decide to kill you. And don't ever come near my Kagome again." He tossed Shoji aside like he weighed nothing and turned to Kagome. "Are you ok?"

"I'm fine." Said Kagome grinding her teeth. "I thought I told you to go away Inuyasha and not to interfere with my life here." She was angry, very angry.

"But…. He-"

"I can take care of myself Inuyasha. Now but out!" turned and stormed into the house.

"In the old days she would have been crying." Said Inuyasha heading for the well house. "She'd be thanking me over and over in her irritating way and wanting me to comfort her. I don't think I like the new Kagome. So I won't be coming back here anytime soon." He jumped into the well.
