Chapter 30 Surprise
When Kagome woke up the next morning, she moved her hand across the bed in an attempt to find her lover’s warmth but found nothing. Her eyes snapped open in panic as she searched around the room for him. Inuyasha was nowhere in sight.
"Inuyasha?" She called. When she got no response, she slid her feet from under the sheets and over the edge of the bed to get up to go look for him. The door was cracked so she knew he had left the room and gave her a hint where he was.
‘He probably knew I would be worried.’ She thought.
Kagome walked to the door and peeked out. When she found neither him nor anyone else, she frowned and exited the room, walking down the hallway. Her stomach growled loudly and she realized just how hungry she must have gotten during the night.
She walked quietly towards the kitchen, unintentionally due to her bare feet, to grab a bite to eat for breakfast. It was then that she realized her had walked off in just her satin night gown, but she didn’t really care at the moment. She was starving and she was worried her newly discovered unborn child wouldn’t get the nutrition it needed if she didn’t eat soon. She placed a gently hand on her abdomen and smiled. She was surprised when she felt her stomach had a little more of a bump but brushed it off as bloating.
‘There’s no way it can be the baby. I just found out yesterday, anyways. Now, where could your daddy have gone little one?’ She asked to herself, not expecting any answer from the baby.
She opened the door to the dining room and quickly slipped into the room, shutting the door quietly behind her. She entered the kitchen and saw Kaede prepping some ingredients for use later in the day. She was glad to see her as the cook on duty this morning. She walked up to her excitedly. Kaede noticed her from the corner of her eye and flashed a warm smile her direction.
“Good morning, Lady Kagome!” She said cheerfully.
“Good morning!” She replied, continuing her way until she was next to the elder woman who was still chopping up some herbs. “Has everyone already eaten breakfast this morning?” She asked. Kaede stopped her task and turned towards the young woman. Kagome could see an almost surprised look on her face.
“Ye didn’t eat with the rest of the young lords and ladies?” She asked in reply. Kagome shook her head, confused why it was such a surprise. Kaede quickly rushed around the kitchen grabbing ingredients, starting the stove, heating a pan, and beginning to prepare the meal.
“We need to get some food into ye empty belly then at once!” She said, cracking an egg into the hot pan. Kagome watched her bewildered. What was all the fuss about? She just woke up a little late. And where was Inuyasha now?
‘So he ate with the family. Then what?’ She questioned. She started to get worried again, but then her stomach growled again as the smell of the cooking food hit her nose and she forgot that Inuyasha was absent. Kagome sits on a stool at the counter as she took in the sweet smell of food.
Kaede finished making a big meal for Kagome and sits across from her. Kaede watches the young woman stuff the food into her mouth and chuckles softly. When Kagome finished, Kaede smiled.
“Feel better, dear?” She said. Kagome nodded contently.
“That was great! Thank you for taking the time to make it for me!” She thanked, but then she turned her attention back to her questions from before. “Hey, Kaede? Why was it that you rushed to make this for me? I mean, I just woke up a little late.” She asked.
Kaede sighed. She looked at Kagome with loving eyes and a small smile. “Kagome, I know about ye condition.” She said. Kagome gasped.
“B-but how? I haven’t told anyone yet!” She panicked. Kaede shook her head with another chuckle.
“No, no. Inuyasha told me about it this morning.” She said to calm the expecting mother. Kagome sighed in relief. “He wanted to make sure I keep ye health with all the nutrition ye and the baby need.” She clarified.
“Thank you Kaede. I really appreciate it.” Kagome told her with a sincere smile on her lips. She stood up and gave the elder woman a hug. Kaede hugged her back but then returned to her work on chopping the herbs.
“Now, run along! Inuyasha said something about training the little kitsune out back.” Kaede informed her. Kagome once again sighed in relief. She thanked Kaede one more time before running upstairs to put on some real clothes.
She put on some comfy sweat pants and a loose fitting tee. She didn’t feel like putting on some tight fitting jeans because she still wasn’t quite feeling back to normal, but she felt much better than she did yesterday. Once she brushed her hair and threw it up into a pony tail, she walked towards the back door.
She reached the glass door and saw Inuyasha showing the small Shippo some techniques of self defense. Kagome giggled. Shippo looked like he was trying so hard to be serious but his tiny form looked so cute trying to mimic the big, muscular Inuyasha. She pushed the door open and stepped out into the warm morning sun.
Inuyasha heard the door latch open and turned to see who was interrupting their training. He saw his raven hair mate walking towards them and a grin found his lips. He turned back to Shippo and whipped his forehead.
“Good work kid! How bout we take a break till later this evening?” He said. Shippo smiled at his encouraging words and the fact that he was being treated like an adult. He nodded in agreement before prancing off to relax a while. Inuyasha turned and found Kagome had almost reached him now. She lifted herself to her tip toes and gave her mate a peck in greeting.
“I guess the old woman told you where I was?” He asked rhetorically. “At least she’s good for somethin’.” He continued. Kagome frowned.
“Don’t say that Inuyasha.” She said firmly. “And she also told me that you told her about the baby without me!” She accused, poking a finger into his chest. She abruptly spun on her heels and tromped back towards the castle.
Inuyasha was left standing there. He blinked in confusion for a minute before panic started seep into his brain. Kagome slammed the door shut behind her. Inuyasha chased after her, desperate to catch up and apologize to his beloved mate. He hurried through the door and turned to follow Kagome, but was harshly stopped.
When he had turned, he was face to face with her. He took a step back in surprise. But she took a step towards him. He couldn't read her expression. He didn't know if she was seriously mad at him or what she was feeling.
"Kagome, I-" He started. Kagome placed a delicate finger over his lips.
"Hush, Inuyasha." She said softly, a hint of seduction laced with her words.
Kagome kept taking small steps forward and forced Inuyasha to back into the wall. He cautiously placed his hands on her hips gingerly, still confused by her actions. He was afraid she was going to punish him for his words earlier and sub missed to her whims.
Kagome grabbed his forelocks, without being too forceful, and pulled herself up on her tip toes to look him more directly in his golden eyes. Inuyasha tried to read her chocolaty, brown eyes, but was still clueless what she was thinking.
She looked deeply into his eyes. Inuyasha thought it looked like she was looking for something buried so far down that no one but her could find it. She stopped her search when she heard a soft whimper come from the hanyou in front of her. She softened her gaze and kissed his cheek.
"I forgive you!" She said happily. She released her hold on him and skipped off back towards the main part of the castle.
Once again, Inuyasha was left there blinking in confusion. He followed after her. When her was walking beside her, he tried to look at her face. It was as if there had never been a disagreement.
"So, tell me again what I am being forgiven of?" He said as more of a question. Kagome smiled at him.
"You told Kaede about the baby without me. And I thought you said you wanted us to tell everyone." She explained cheerfully. He gulped at her overly happy mood. "Sooooo..." She started, then turned to face him, "we will tell everyone else together, okay?" And with a smile, she continued walking.
Then it occurred him. "Uhhh, Kagome? There is one other person I told." He said almost ashamed. She stopped abruptly and waited to hear who else he had told. "When I first realized you were pregnant, I went to my mother for advice. I didn't know how or when to tell you, but I told you right after! I swear!" He said, scared she would be mad again. He was relieved when she stepped forward and kissed his lips softly.
"She’s the only other exception." She said with another loving smile. He inwardly sighed in relief. He grabbed her hand and gave her a matching loving smile. They both returned to the central area of the castle. When they got to the bottom of the steps, Inuyasha stopped Kagome from walking up to their room with a strong arm wrapping around her and spinning her to face him. She landed in his chest. Her eyes looking up to his questioningly.
“I do want you to let Kaede to give you a quick look over to make sure you’re doing okay.” He said as he nuzzled her neck affectionately. She giggled as his breath tickled her skin, but she gently pushed him back so she could look at him again.
“I’m fine Inuyasha. We don’t need to bother her with something so little as that.” She protested. Inuyasha frowned but pulled her back into him so he could replace his nose to her neck. She tried at first to struggle out of his grip but soon realized her efforts were futile.
“For me?” He asked. He pulled up to look at her with his puppy dog face and she couldn’t refuse his request.
“Alright, I’ll let her give me a check-up.” She finally caved. Inuyasha felt pleased that she agreed and picked her up onto his back as he carried her towards the kitchen where she had left Kaede to her work. “You shouldn’t be walking around so much.” He said.
Kagome wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face into his luxurious, silky, silver hair, not really listening to his complaint. Taking in his scent that always had the ability to calm her, no matter what kind of situation she was in. The two entered the kitchen and Inuyasha placed Kagome back on her feet as they approached Kaede who was just finishing preparing lunch. The elderly woman noticed the pair and greeted them happily.
“Hey old woman, I want you to give Kagome a look over to make sure she and the pup are healthy.” He demanded. Kagome squeezed his hand in warning. He huffed and crossed his arms. Kagome turned back to Kaede who didn’t seem phased by Inuyasha’s rudeness.
“I’m sorry Lady Kaede, Inuyasha meant to ask if you would have the time, could you give me a check-up to make sure the baby is doing well.” She said giving Kaede a respectful bow.
“Of course! There’s no need to apologize either. I’ve gotten used to Inuyasha’s bad manners over my many years of working here for Lord Sesshomaru.” She said. “But can it wait until after ye two and the family eat lunch? I would have more time to properly examine ye that way.” She explained and Kagome nodded.
“That sounds great! Thank you so much Kaede for your kindness!” Kagome said cheerfully and with another bow Kagome pulled Inuyasha with her out of the kitchen to the dining room.
Kagome sighed as she turned to him and hugged him lovingly. He hugged her back but didn’t know why she was all of the sudden being affectionate.
“You really need to be nicer to the servants. They work very hard to give us the life we have here.” She said softly.
He took in her words and pondered them. He started to wonder what his life would be like if he wasn’t fortunate enough to grow up here in his brother Sesshomaru’s castle. If he didn’t have this life that he now realized he may have taken for granted. He hugged Kagome a little tighter in his arms. He couldn’t think of a life without her. A life where she didn’t love him. He couldn’t stand the thought. He leaned down and kissed the top of Kagome’s head.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered. She could hear the grief in his voice and looked up at him. She stretched up on her tip toes and kissed his lips softly. They parted after a minute and Inuyasha placed his forehead to hers as she rocked back onto her heels. “I love you.” He said. Kagome grinned.
“I love you too.” She replied. He returned her grin but it quickly faded as he felt his brother approaching and he realized something.
“Get ready to break the news.” He said quietly. Kagome was confused by what he meant. He saw the question in her eyes and continued to explain. “Sesshomaru will smell your scent has changed. So we will have to tell him when he gets here.”
Kagome took a deep breath and tried to relax her stiffened back, but was having no luck. Inuyasha felt her tensions and supported her with an arm across her lower back to her waist. She felt a little better knowing he was going through this with her. She wasn’t alone and she never would be again. He would always be by her side and she would his. She was right where she belonged. Inuyasha led her over to the table and pull out a chair for her. She gladly sat down and Inuyasha took the seat next to her. He grabbed her hand to once again give her support.
Sesshomaru entered the dining room with Rin close behind him. Their fingers laced in one another’s. Sesshomaru only glanced at the younger couple as he helped Rin and seated himself next to her. With Sesshomaru and Rin’s seats closer to the door and Inuyasha and Kagome sitting on the other end of the table, Inuyasha figured the scent hadn’t wafted that far away yet. He waited anxiously for his brother to realize the scent change in the room. For the recognition in his face.
Kagome gulped as she also waited for her scent to hit his nostrils. It felt like an hour even though it had only been a minute. Sesshomaru’s eyes snapped in Kagome’s direction before he stood. Rin squeaked in surprise from his sudden movement. He walked around the table and towards Inuyasha and Kagome. They both stood as he came closer.
Inuyasha was hesitant at first about letting Sesshomaru near Kagome, but he knew his brother would never hurt his brother’s mate or unborn pup. Sesshomaru came closer to Kagome and took a better whiff of her scent.
He turned more towards Inuyasha and extended his hand to him. Inuyasha shook it relieved of his approval.
“Congratulations little brother.” He said before flashing an approving grin his and Kagome’s way. Kagome smiled, happy he approved. Rin finally stood up from her chair and slammed her hands to the table to call everyone’s attention that she was still in the room.
“Hey! What the heck is going on?! Someone please tell me!” Rin exclaimed in confusion and frustration that there was something that no one was telling her. Kagome giggled.
“I’m pregnant Rin!” Kagome told her with a big smile.
