Chapter 31 The Kicker

Rin didn’t register Kagome’s words for a few seconds before it finally hit her like a ton of bricks. Then her face went from a confused frown to an overjoyed smile.

“No way! That’s so exciting! Congratulations!” She exclaimed as she ran to give Kagome a hug. Kagome laughed at Rin’s overexcited cheering.

“Thank you Rin!” She said.

Just then, the dining room doors opened again and Izayoi entered with Shippo in tow. Izayoi had on a soft, motherly expression. She walked up to Kagome and hugged her. The hug was so comforting and familiar that it reminded her of her own mother’s hugs. Tears stung her eyes and threatened to spill over her lids.

Inuyasha smelt the tears. Knowing his mate was completely safe in his mother’s embrace, he put the pieces together. His heart felt heavy for her.

Izayoi felt the heaving of sobs begin from the young woman in her arms and she hugged her a little tighter. To tell her she was there and she was loved.

“You’re going to be just fine, dear.” Izayoi told Kagome supportively. Kagome calmed down and wiped her tears away. Izayoi kissed Kagome’s cheek and then turned to Inuyasha. She gave him a short hug then turned back to Kagome. “Inuyasha will make sure you never feel alone and he will also make sure you are safe and happy. I can promise you that.” Izayoi said comfortingly. Kagome smiled and nodded.

Once everyone sat back down in their seats, the servant girl entered and announced that their food would be there shortly. Rin placed her elbows on the table and cradled her chin in her hands, her eyes sparkling at Kagome.

“So when did you two find out?” She asked.

“Inuyasha noticed my scent changed yesterday.” Kagome replied. Rin frowned and sat back in her chair. Kagome was surprised by her change in mood. ‘Was it something I said?’ She thought.

“Then why didn’t I find out until just now?” She said with a pouty face.

"I was bed ridden all day yesterday from morning sickness." Kagome explained. Rin thought about what she said for a second. Then her face returned to its happy self.

"Ok then!" She said cheerfully. Rin didn't want to mention that she and Sesshomaru hadn't left her room at all yesterday anyways. So she decided to drop the subject at that.

Kagome flashed her a happy smile then turned back to Inuyasha. He was staring at her with loving eyes. She returned the gesture without hesitation. Inuyasha moved his hand over hers and she squeezed his fingers as they wrapped around her petite hand.

The servant girl returned to the dining room and was followed by others with plates of food. She announced that dinner was served and the plates were placed in front of everyone at the table. Kagome noticed that her plate was different than everyone else's. She had a big fancy hamburger with fries while everyone else had moderate sized chicken sandwiches with chips for lunch. She caught the servant boy before he walked away.

"I'm sorry but there must be a mistake-" She started to question but Inuyasha cut in.

"No everything is fine. Thank you." He told the boy, dismissing him from the dining room. Kagome gave him a look that told him he had some explaining to do.

"Uh, well, the pup needs a lot of meat in its diet, so I told all the chefs to make you meals that are high in protein. I know I should have told with you first, but I'm just looking out for you and the baby." He explained with a tinge of shame in his voice. Kagome lifted her hands to his chest and smiled as her other hand landed on her stomach. Inuyasha relaxed.

"I didn't know that the baby had a specific diet. Thank you Inuyasha for looking out for us!" She praised. Kagome turned to her oversized burger and could barely wrap her fingers around it enough to pick it up without making a mess. After everyone finished eating, servants came and removed their plates.

Kagome relaxed against the back of her chair with her hands on her full belly. Inuyasha grinned before standing and offering her a hand to help her up as well. She took his hand and stood beside him with one hand still on her stomach. She felt a sudden kick from under her hand. She hunched over slightly from the unexpected force it released under her skin.

“Whoa!” She said, surprised by not only the kick but that her belly was a little bigger than she had thought from that morning. Inuyasha stiffened. He looked her over then into her eyes. She looked confused and worried all wrapped into one.

“Are you alright?” He asked, placing his hand on either of her shoulders. She nodded hesitantly. He didn’t like it. He noticed that everyone from around the table had gathered around Kagome in concern. He straightened up and put on a calm face. He looked to Sesshomaru, who had an arm around Rin to comfort her worries for Kagome, then to his mother, who had an almost knowing look on her face.

Shippo leapt to Inuyasha’s shoulder and looked to Kagome with tears of fear in his eyes. Kagome noticed his distraught face and smiled warmly.

“I’m fine Shippo! Don’t worry!” She told him as she lifted a hand to pat his head. Before her body could straighten enough, another kick made her hunch again. She winced. Inuyasha swiftly gave Shippo to Rin and picked Kagome up bridal style.

“Go get Kaede and meet me in my room.” He told his mother before sprinting out of the dining room.

Izayoi ran to the kitchen and called for Kaede as she entered.

Rin looked up at Sesshomaru. “What’s wrong with Kagome?” She asked with concern. Sesshomaru looked between her and the small kitsune in her arms.

“She’s perfectly fine. The fetus is just developing rapidly and getting a little rambunctious.” He said flatly.

Shippo furrowed his brow in confusion. He looked up to Rin and asked, “What’s a ‘fetus’? Sounds like some gross bug or something.” Rin giggled.

“It just means baby!” She explained.

“Ooohhhh!” Shippo said then laughed that he thought his baby brother or sister was a bug. He and Rin laughed before she and Sesshomaru took him to the servant’s quarters to play with the other children.

Izayoi continued through the kitchen in search of Kaede. The servants moved out of her path and looked at her with a hint of concern in all their eyes. She finally found her and rushed towards her.

“Lady Kaede! We need to go to Inuyasha’s room. Kagome felt the baby kicking.” Izayoi told her with slight urgency. She knew Kagome wasn’t in any real danger but she knew Inuyasha wanted to be sure of that before jumping to conclusions. Besides, she had gone through the same kinds of things when she was pregnant with him.

‘Taisho was always overreacting when it came to me and Inuyasha.’ She thought. ‘He gets it from his father.’

The two elder women hurried to the young couple’s room and knocked on the door before rushing in.

Inuyasha laid Kagome on the bed and knelt by her side. Worry was plastered all over his face and Kagome didn’t like it.

“Why are you so worried Inuyasha? I’m fine. Really.” She said trying to sit up but he wouldn’t let her.

“Save your energy.” He said. Kagome didn’t fight his strong hand holding her shoulder but did protest verbally.

“Tell me why! I just felt the baby kick! I’m not hurt or anything!” She said.

“Then why did you hunch over?! Huh?! Or wince the second time?! What was that if it wasn’t you being hurt?!” He yelled back at her. She felt tears stinging her eyes from his harsh tone and rolled onto her side to face away from him. Immediately, Inuyasha felt guilty for yelling at her. His ears drooped and he placed a hand on her raised hip.

“Kagome, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you.” He said to try and make amends but Kagome just threw a hand up.

“Just shut up and leave me alone, ok?!” She replied with a quiver in her voice. “Go sit over there!” She said firmly, pointing in the general area of a chair across the room.

Inuyasha’s heart dropped to his gut as he stood and obeyed her wish. He plopped into the chair and hunched over his knees, resting both elbows on them, staring at the floor in shame.

A knock on the door made both of them jump in anticipation. Kagome rolled back to her original position on her back while Inuyasha’s eyes watched her intently as he stayed seated where he was.

Kaede entered the room with Izayoi close behind and hurried to the side of the bed. Izayoi stopped when she noticed Inuyasha across the room hunched over in a chair staring at Kagome sadly. For the moment, she shook her head to clear her thoughts but made a note to address him in a minute. Kaede stood beside Kagome and felt her forehead for a fever. She felt normal so she started asking Kagome little questions as she felt around her stomach.

“So my Lady, how are ye feeling?” The elder woman asked. Kagome smiled at her to prove she felt fine.

“I feel great!” She replied. Kaede looked at her face for a second then continued examining her belly. “What are you looking for?” She finally asked Kaede.

“Just abnormalities dear.” She said. Inuyasha’s ears twitched as he listened carefully. Kaede finally stopped her feeling and sat down on the edge of the bed and faced Kagome. “And all I see is that the baby is developing very fast. It appears that ye are at the a few weeks along in human baby development.”

Kagome’s mouth gaped open at her words. Her hand flew to her stomach and rubbed it gently. One of her hands lifted in Inuyasha’s direction and grabbed at the air. He saw her reaching for him and was there for her hand to grab in seconds. She looked up to him in shock when she finally was able to grip his hand. He knelt by her side and rubbed her hand comfortingly.

Kaede continued to probe her questions to Kagome. “Tell me what ye felt in the dining room again?” She asked.

Kagome blinked and shook her head so she could think straight again. “Well, I felt a strong kick in my stomach, but I think I was in more shock than pain.” She said. Inuyasha leaned in and placed his lips on her shoulder to comfort her further. He could feel the shock she was speaking of radiating off of her like it was waves of heat.

The elder woman took in her words and contemplated when for a minute. “It seems that the baby is very strong. Maybe stronger than ye body will be able to handle.” She said more in a pondering way than matter of fact.

Inuyasha’s heart stopped. His mount fell open and he fell back on his butt, his eyes wide with terror and disbelief covering his features. Kagome immediately shot up when she felt her lover release his grip on her.

“Inuyasha!” Kagome cried as she found his seemingly shell shocked form in a fetal position beside the bed. Izayoi was knelt next to him instantly.

“Are you ok dear? Please breath!” Izayoi exclaimed. She shook her son lightly to pull him back to consciousness. Kagome felt tears threatening to spill over her lids as she waited in anticipation for him to respond.

He took in a sharp breath and the three women in the room released theirs that they were holding.

“I did this to her. She’ll die for my seed.” He whispered almost silently. Izayoi was the only one to hear his words. She broke out in an unexpected burst of tears that Kagome didn’t expect. Izayoi threw her arms around Inuyasha neck and whispered into his ear.

“Stay strong son. She needs you now more than ever. She won’t die. But she needs you for support.” She assured him. Her words seemed to snap him back into reality and he patted her back comfortingly to stop her sobbing.

When she settled a few moments later, he turned back to his mate on the bed who had streams of tears staining her cheeks in worry. He half laid down next to her seated form and hugged her affectionately, placing his head on her shoulder. She cradled his head in her arms as if he had just come back after going missing.

“Are you alright Inuyasha? You scared me.” She whispered in his ear.

“I’m fine. I’m sorry K’gome.” He mumbled into her shirt. Kaede stood up and turned towards the door.

“No one has anything to worry about right now. The baby is healthy and thriving. Besides, Lady Izayoi was able to deliver ye now wasn’t she Inuyasha?” Kaede said, giving Inuyasha the hope he really needed from her. The woman left the three in the room to discuss the events in private.

Izayoi took Kaede’s seat on the bed. She looked over the young lovers. She knew they were just like her and Taisho when they were expecting Inuyasha.

“Mother, tell me what happened when you were pregnant with me.” Inuyasha asked, intently looking at her for some answers. Izayoi smiled as she reminisced about her pregnancy.

“I went through the same thing Kagome did when you kicked for the first time. I was surprised that you were there so soon.” She started. Kagome felt relieved that she had the same experience. “And I remember your father having a very similar reaction to yours.” She told Inuyasha with a smirk. He smiled back then turned and nuzzled Kagome’s neck lightly in affection.

Izayoi’s face flashed as though she had just remembered something she had forgotten. “Oh! I just remembered! We need to tell your father!” She exclaimed excitedly. She stood up quickly and hurried to the door. Then she abruptly stopped and turned back towards them. “You know what?! We should go tell him in person! He would love that!” She exclaimed. Inuyasha sat up to begin to protest.

“I don’t think-” But Izayoi stopped him before he could even voice his opinion.

“If you’re going to say that Kagome isn’t in any shape to travel, you are wrong! Now is the best time for her to travel before she really starts showing. And you’ll be going with her to make sure she will be alright! So the debate is settled! We will leave in the morning to your father’s!” His mother proclaimed and was out the door before anyone else had anything further to say about it.

Inuyasha sighed and turned to Kagome. She was smiling warmly to try and comfort him. “Do you think this is a good idea?” He asked her.

“I think your mother would know if it was a bad idea for me.” She assured him. He knew she was right, but he couldn’t help but worry about her well being with the pup.

Kagome saw the doubt on his face and giggled. She scooted closer to him and pushed her head up against his chin and hugged his torso. He hugged her back and took in the sweet scent of her hair.

“Everything will be fine Inuyasha. You’ll be there to protect me.” She said. Inuyasha grinned at her confidence in him.

“But I can’t protect you from the pup.” He added. Kagome just laughed.

“What would be the difference between me lying here in bed and sitting in the carriage?” She asked. Inuyasha laughed as well.

“I guess you’re right. We will go with mom in the morning then.” He replied. Kagome nuzzled into his chest contently and Inuyasha tightened his hold on her slightly.

After a while, Kagome felt the baby kicking again, but less forceful. She pulled back from Inuyasha and leaned against her propped up pillows. Inuyasha rolled to rest his head on her shoulder. Kagome rubbed her belly softly.

Kagome scooted down so she could lie down and Inuyasha went with her. Inuyasha gently rolled her on her side and spooned with her, wrapping his arms around her waist. Kagome felt Inuyasha’s breaths become more even and slow against her neck and knew he had fall asleep.

Her fingers found their way back to her stomach as she laid there. She began to wonder who her baby would be one day. First though, what gender was it? She felt like she wanted a boy, just like his father. Brave, strong, loyal, loving and protective. But then again, it’s every girls dream to have a baby girl.

So she decided that it didn’t matter what gender the baby was. It was going to be the biggest blessing in her life. After its father. She moved her hand down to Inuyasha’s hand around her waist and tangled her fingers in his. She felt his fingers lace with hers subconsciously as he sighed contently behind her. She wanted to giggle but held it back so she wouldn’t wake him.

Turning her attention back to her thoughts about the baby, she tried to think of names to consider. Nothing seemed to sound right to her. Then she had an idea for a girl’s name.

‘Mizuki.’ She thought. She didn’t know if she would have a girl or a boy, but that name seemed right for a girl. As she continued to ponder boy’s names, she didn’t realize she was drifting off to sleep.
