Chapter 5: The Evil Presence

After a long bath to heal her aching muscles, Kagome got out of the water and slipped a towel around her. She then walked through the doors and back into her room. Tsubame sat on Kagome's bed, holding a dark green kimono adorned with yellow flowers and a yellow obie.

"This will look beautiful on you Kagome-chan." Tsubame said helping her into the foreign clothing. Once she was properly dressed, Tsubame insisted that she do Kagome's hair. After that, she walked to the vanity and stared into the mirror in awe. Although she didn't show it on the outside, Kagome loved the way she looked.

"Wow, I guess I look okay." She said.

"Okay? You look like a hime Kagome-chan!" Tsubame joked. She frowned when she didn't see even the slightest smile tug on Kagome's lips. "Well," she sighed. "Perhaps we should walk to the dining hall. Dinner should be prepared."

Kagome nodded and followed her out of the room. Once again, Kagome found that she would easily get lost in the castle and was glad that she had Tsubame to accompany her. At the end of a long hallway, a large set of wooden doors were opened by two guards, one on each door.

Kagome followed Tsubame through the doors and to the table in the middle of the room.

"Good evening, Lady Kagome." Sakuya said cheerfully, surprising everyone else, except Sesshomaru who had smelt Sakuya's tears and knew she was only trying to make Kagome more comfortable. But the rest of the table was speechless.

Sakuya didn't usually take well to humans. Even Mizuko was stunned by her sudden outburst. She usually wasn't cheerful either. Kagome just bowed politely and followed Tsubame to the chair next to Sesshomaru's.

"Well, Lady Kagome," Yamamato started. "Please, just Kagome." Kagome cut him off. Yamamato just smiled at her warmly, and finished his statement. "You are the keeper of the Shikon no Tama, are you not?" Kagome nodded. "Where is it?" he finished.

"It's inside me." She said. Everyone's eyes widened and began to assume different things. "I didn't put it there, it was in my side when I first learned of it. After it was completed, it just went inside my body again. Although, I'm not exactly sure why." Everyone seemed to relax at this and continued to wait for their meal.

A servant brought everyone's food only seconds later. The meal was finished in silence, and Kagome was the first to be done, directly followed by Sakuya. After excusing themselves, Sakuya followed Kagome out to the gardens and sat down next to her on a stone bench.

"The sky is beautiful here." Kagome nodded. "Can I ask you a question Kagome-san?"

"Just Kagome please, and sure I guess." Kagome answered indifferently. "Do you think you'll ever change your mind?" she asked. Kagome looked at her, curiousness flashing briefly through her eyes.

"I overheard your conversation." Kagome's eyes snapped open, as she looked up to Sakuya. "Don't worry." She said. "I promise not to tell, after all my srory is sort of like that of yours. Except for the well part, but if Sesshoamru-sama believes it, then anyone can. But what I wondered was, do you think that you could ever change your mind, and fall in love again? Or will your past keep you from doing so. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you find the right person, do you think that you'd be able to love him, and in turn, open your heart to him"

"I rally don't know. If I found the right person, then yes, I guess so. I mean it depends on whether I trust him enough to give him my heart. If he can heal the lingering wounds, then of course, but if not, then no. "I guess I'd have to know him enough to know what he's like."

"What happened to your family Sakuya-sama?" Kagome asked.

"Well Kagome-chan, my family was slaughtered by humans when I was young." She felt the tears coming on again. She hadn't cried for so long, but she couldn't help it. The tears came streaming down her face followed by choked sobs.

"I watched them get killed and there was nothing I could do. My mother died protecting me. She died because I couldn't protect myself." Kagome was shocked at her outburst, her second one today. But nonetheless, she hesitantly put her arms around the youkai and ran her fingers through her hair.

"Shhh, it's okay Sakuya-chan, there was nothing you could do. It wasn't your fault." Kagome whispered into her ear. How she wished someone had done that for her when she was struggling, but she wouldn't let anyone.

"You have to be strong," she said. Sakuya stopped crying and looked up at Kagome, who still had a look of pure indifference on her face.

"I'm so sorry. I don't remember the last time I cried I guess I was overdue." She let out a low chuckle and smiled sadly at Kagome. "You know, crying will make you feel better sometimes. Crying alone will help a little, but having someone comfort you is even better." Sakuya said.

Kagome nodded as Sakuya stood up. "Well, it's getting late so I'm gonna get some rest. Something tells me you should too, tomorrow will be a long day." Kagome nodded and watched Sakuya walk into the palace. She sighed, 'it's getting harder not to break down and let someone comfort me.' Kagome thought. 'But I don't want anyone to see me that way, I don't want to feel weak.' One lone tear streaked down Kagome's face as she walked into the palace and towards where she remembered her room to be.

Stripping off her kimono, she put on her own pajamas and lay down comfortably on the futon. Pulling the blankets to her chin, Kagome fell asleep, dreaming about her past once more.

Sesshomaru woke that night to the sound of whimpers in the room beside him. He sighed before getting up from his peaceful slumber and walking into Kagome's room. Sesshomaru winced as he was automatically hit by the unmistakable scent of tears. Walking up to her futon, he frowned.

Kagome was tossing and turning violently in her sleep. She whimpered and cried out for her friends, sobbing uncontrollably in her unconsciousness. Sesshomaru sat down beside her and put his hands on her arms, but when she started kicking, he sighed again.

Hesitantly, Sesshomaru lifted the screaming girl into his arms. He began to stroke her hair softly and whispered 'shhh' into her ear soothingly. But when she stopped struggling, her crying increased.

"Kagome." Sesshomaru said. "Kagome, wake up." Kagome's eyes shot open as she took in her surroundings. Realizing that she was in someone's arms, she looked up into the golden depths of Sesshomaru. She gasped, "Sesshomaru." She said.

"What has you so upset that you thrash and cry in your dreams?" he asked. Kagome looked at him.

"I've dreamed it over and over again for the past two months. Remember how I said I didn't cry?" Sesshomaru nodded. "That's because I do it unconsciously, when I'm alone, sleeping." She said.

"I haven't cried in front of anyone, but now, now I feel like I have to." Kagome said before a fresh batch of tears came pouring out of her eyes. Burying her face in Sesshomaru's kimono, she continued to cry, she needed someone to comfort her, and she couldn't go one without a gentle embrace from someone she trusted.

She'd gotten to know Sesshomaru during the battles with Naraku, sometimes he stayed afterwards and he'd just talk with her all night or something since he didn't need sleep, and Kagome was too anxious to sleep after a fight. She'd gotten to know him well, and he wasn't as harsh anymore, not to her at least. But the rest of the group was still on his bad side. She trusted him now, and was glad he was with her right now.

Sesshomaru sighed, running his nails up and down her back to calm her. 'Why did I come in here in the first place?' Sesshomaru asked himself, half expecting to hear an answer, but he sighed when he didn't get one.

Kagome's fists were balled, one in his kimono, and the other gripping his tail, and she was curled in his lap, sniffling. Finally, she was quiet. 'Thank kami-sama.' He thought, and then he went to move her.

Sesshomaru growled when her grip only became tighter and she started crying again. Sighing in loss, he sat down on the futon with his back against the wall and Kagome in his lap.

'She's lucky I don't kill her.' He thought before falling asleep.

Kagome's eyes snapped again in the middle of the night. She gasped when she felt an evil presence. It was more malevolent then Naraku. Kagome stiffened when something tightened around her waist. Come to think of it, something was not right. Someone was lying next to her, and then it hit her.

'Sesshomaru.' She thought. 'He must have fallen asleep.'

Then the presence she felt got stronger, a lot stronger. She tried to move again, but his grip was nearly bone crushing. "Sesshomaru, get up!" she demanded.

Sesshomaru's eyes opened hesitantly then closed again. Kagome rolled her eyes and putting her hands on his shoulders, she shook him until his eyes snapped open. His eyes widened when he realized he had a death grip on Kagome's waist.

"Well, are you going to let me go, or are you going to lay there?" Sesshomaru quickly shook his head and released Kagome who immediately got up and started walking towards the door.

"Where are you going?" he asked, getting off the futon.

"I sense something, it's like an evil presence, but it feels like a spirit." Sesshomaru's was fully awake at hearing this. "Come on it feels like it's coming from that way." Sesshomaru followed Kagome down the halls and sets of stairs until she stopped and hesitantly opened a door.

Walking outside, Kagome gasped as she saw white orbs as she calculated to be souls, flying towards the distance. Sesshomaru picked up Kagome around her waist and flew off after them. Kagome threw her arms around his neck and concentrated on the evil aura they were approaching.

"This is the direction the presence is heading towards I can feel it." Kagome said in Sesshomaru's ear. "Do you smell anything?" she asked. Sesshomaru took a deep breath and shook his head. All he could smell was forest.

Sesshomaru stopped short, watching in awe as the souls began disappearing into an abandoned hut. Kagome gasped as the aura flared and turned around just in time to see the last soul disappear into the hut.

Sesshomaru set Kagome down began to follow her into the hut. When Kagome touched the shoji door, a green light emitted from the room, sending her flying back into Sesshomaru.

"Owe, my head." Kagome groaned as she got off of Sesshomaru. Realizing her was unconscious, she sighed and walked up to the door without touching it. She took on a pink glow and walked into the hut.

"Oh kami-sama!" Kagome said. Souls were lined against the walls, bounded by a barrier spell so they couldn't gain freedom. The demonic aura was extremely strong here, as Kagome walked up to touch one of the souls, something grabbed her wrists and threw her to the ground.

"How dare you enter my hut you filthy human miko!" A voice growled. Kagome looked up and gasped. The humanoid form of a youkai standing before her was very good looking. He was around the same height as Sesshomaru with waist length black hair braided and hanging loosely down his back. The red pupils of his dark green eyes shone with anger, causing Kagome to gulp.

A flame adorned his for head, giving his position as a lower class taiyoukai. His thick green nails glowed as he walked towards the quivering miko.

'I have to be strong.' Kagome thought, standing up and glaring defiantly at him. The youkai smiled, flashing his pearly white fangs.

"You, little miko, think that you can come into the hut of Lord Aami of the dragon youkai and openly defy me? I think not!" he yelled before slashing her across her gut. Kagome cried out and closed her eyes, gripping her stomach tightly trying to stop the blood flow from continuing.

Aami lifted his claws to her throat and pulled back just enough so that he could hit her full force, but just as his hand came flying forward, a white blue showed in front of him and the girl was gone.

Sesshomaru woke up to see the hut in front of him and hear Kagome cry out, immediately smelling her blood. His eyes flashed red at the thought of someone hurting Kagome and suddenly, he was walking into the barrier, not noticing the pain he was receiving by resisting it.

What he saw when he walked in was not pleasing to his eyes. Sesshomaru quickly ran to Kagome and moved her from harm's way before the youkai could lay the finishing blow. Sesshomaru looked at Kagome. She had tears in her eyes and was fighting to breath. He looked down to where her arms were clutching her stomach and growled when he saw blood flowing from her freely.

He instantly set Kagome down and charged towards the other youkai, who merely chuckled, and suddenly all traces of him, the souls, and his aura were gone.

Sesshomaru turned back to Kagome and immediately picked her up and walked out of the hut. He realized that they were now in the western lands and that his castle was closer then that of the western lord. Summoning his youki cloud, he shifter Kagome bridle style and took off to his castle.

What captivated him to fly faster then he remembered ever flying before, he did not know. All he knew was that he didn't want Kagome to be harmed, and for now that was good enough. Deciding he'd ponder it later, he looked down at Kagome and became angry again.

She was quickly loosing consciousness. She lost too much blood and would soon die if he didn't get her to his home quick enough. He quickened his speed seeing his castle in the distance hoped he would make it on time.

"Yuki-sama," Tsubame started, "Sesshomaru-sama, nor Kagome-sama are in their rooms." Tsubame was going to check on Kagome this morning when he door was open and she wasn't there. She then noticed Sesshomaru's door open as well. He was gone too. After a thorough search of the castle, she'd decided to ask her mistress of their whereabouts.

"I haven't the slightest idea where they are Tsubame." Yuki said. "Ask Hikari maybe he'll know." She paused for a moment. "On, second thought, he'll just come up with the idea that they snuck off and had 'fun'" Yuki laughed and shook her head at the idea of the human hating taiyoukai mating with a young human miko.

Shaking her head, she walked off to search for them herself.

Sesshomaru entered his castle through his personal balcony so as not to disturb anyone. Sesshomaru laid her down on his bed and tore her spaghetti strap nightshirt from her and examined the wound.

Looking at it, he growled. It was a lot deeper then he thought, or would have liked to imagine. One look told him that he'd need to resort to Tensaiga. Sighing, he removed the sword from his sash and swiped it across the wound. It instantly closed, leaving Kagome with only a slight pain and blood on her stomach.

Sesshomaru retrieved a towel in seconds and was back by her side cleaning the blood. Once that was done, he lay down next to her and sighed.

'What came over me back there?' ha asked himself.

'I was enraged when I saw him about to kill her, and even more so when I saw the wound.'

'What the hell is she doing to me?'

"Sesshomaru, thank you." Kagome said, turning to look at him.

Sesshomaru turned to face her, but was taken back by her smile. It was beautiful. And before he knew it, Sesshomaru found himself smiling back. But before he could change it to a scowl Kagome had kissed him on the cheek and closed her eyes.

"Good Night, Sesshomaru." She said. Sesshomaru sighed.

"That line would work if it wasn't morning already. I have work to do." Sesshomaru sighed and sat up. But before he knew it, Kagome pulled him back down and held a death grip on his arm.

"You didn't get much sleep, it's better that you rest more before you do your so called work or you'll just get last and screw something up." She said, smiling. Sesshomaru was amazed, this was not the girl he'd come across the other day, the other girl wouldn't be smiling like this.

Kagome seemed to notice his train of thoughts and scowled at him. "Is my smile that unnerving? Maybe not smiling is a good thing." She stated, replacing her emotionless mask.

Sesshomaru looked amused. "No, by all means, smile. I'm sure Rin will want to see you happy tomorrow." Kagome looked dumbfounded.

"What do you mean? Where are we?" she asked. Sesshomaru merely cocked a delicate eyebrow. "We are in my chambers at my castle." The statement didn't shcok him like he thought it should, instead it sounded normal.

"Well why tomorrow?" Sesshomaru sighed.

"You're the one that mentioned sleep, so now we are sleeping through the day." Sesshomaru said.

"Sesshomaru?" He inclined his head to show that he was listening. "You should smile more often, it looks good on you." She said. Sesshomaru smirked and found himself leaning closer to her. Kagome seemed to notice too, because her eyelids were starting to droop.

Before he could think twice about it, Sesshomaru claimed Kagome's lips in chaste kiss and was surprised to find her leaning in to it. Deciding to take advantage of her trust, he gently slid his tongue across her bottom lip.

Kagome slowly allowed him entrance, putting her arms around his neck as he placed his around her waist, they pulled each other closer as their tongues battled for dominance. Breaking their kiss to gasp for air, Sesshomaru gently kissed Kagome once more before pulling her flush against him and closing his eyes.

"Goodnight, Kagome." He said. Kagome smiled and rested her head against his neck.

"Goodnight, Sesshomaru."
