Chapter 4

Meeting the Family

A couple of minutes of riding in the car in silence Sesshomaru decided to speak up. "So what's the reason for me having to come pick you up?"

"No reason." Inuyasha said. Truth was he didn't really want to tell his brother.

"You said you would explain later. Should I turn the car around and ask her?" Sesshomaru said.

"NO!" Inuyasha shouted. "I'll tell you. She had too many bags so I helped her."

"It's not like you to help people." He said.

"She's different." Inuyasha said.

"Is she now? I take it she's a new friend?" He said.

"Hai, I met her yesterday."

"Yesterday? You're already making your move?"

"No, I'm not making a move. Sango and Miroku were with us. We all went to the mall as friends."

"So you like her?"

Inuyasha thought for a minute then got mad. "How is it that you can always get me to talk?" He asked.

"I have my ways." Sesshomaru said. He enjoyed teasing him.

"Just shut up and drive." Inuyasha said. Sesshomaru always got Inuyasha to talk no matter what. He hated it.

Kagome had just gotten off the phone with Shippo. Her mom had called him to tell him about her situation. Since he was a youkai he would be able to sniff out Naraku just in case he didn't believe that whole foreign exchange student thing.

He also said he would help out when ever she needed him. He was always like that. Even though he was a year younger than her sometimes he acted more mature. She laid down in her bed. She smiled. Her and Shippo were going to spend the day together tomorrow.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kagome had been in Tokyo for a month now. Everything in her life was going great. She made new friends. She met her old friend. Her friends had stopped asking questions about her past. They sensed her uneasiness when they asked so they stopped.
She had gotten to know them better. She realized Sango was a great friend. Miroku was a good friend too, despite his lecherous ways. He mostly went for Sango. She could tell they liked each other.
Inuyasha she had gotten real close to. She liked him a lot. They seemed to have a lot in common. He would always help her even though she didn't ask. Half the time she would tell him she didn't need help but he helped anyway.
Life was great. She was getting good grades in school. Kouga kept bugging her but Inuyasha usually came to her rescue. Her mom and brother were going to visit her. She was supposed to meet them at a restaurant after school.
She was at her locker putting her books away. "So what do you guys want to do today?" Sango asked.
"Gomen Sango I won't be able to go with you guys." She said.
Everyone looked at her. It would be the first time since she'd met them that she couldn't go. "Why?" Sango asked.
"I have something I need to do. I'll make it up to you guys. Ja ne." She ran off without another word.
"This will be the first time she isn't coming with us." Sango said. "I wonder what she had to do? I heard about this new restaurant, it's kind of far you guys want to go?"
Miroku and Inuyasha nodded. They all walked out of the school. "I'll drive." Inuyasha said. "We have to stop at my place to get the car."
"I don't know why you don't just drive to school." Miroku said.
"I like walking." Inuyasha said.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Kagome paid the driver and got out of the cab. She was meeting her family at a new restaurant. It was pretty far from the school. She looked around for her mom and brother. She spotted them at a table by the window.

"Kagome." Ms. Higurashi said.

"Mom, Souta." She gave them both a hug and sat down. "How have you guys been?" She asked.

"We're great. The shrine is getting a lot of business right now." Ms. Higurashi said.

"Are you sure it's ok to come then? Shouldn't you be helping grandpa?" She asked.

"He can handle it on his own. Besides I would never miss the chance at seeing my only daughter. So how have things been?"

"Things are good." She said.

"You're still worried aren't you?"

"Hai, Shippo is around so I feel a little better." Kagome said. "So Souta how have you been doing in soccer?" She asked changing the subject.

Sango, Miroku, and Inuyasha had arrived at the restaurant. They looked around as they stepped in. Someone took them to their table. Sango saw someone who looked like Kagome. She looked again. It was Kagome! She was with some people.

"You guys look it's Kagome." Sango said and pointed to where she was.

Inuyasha looked at where she pointed. She was right it was Kagome. "I was wondering why I could smell her."

"What is she doing here? Who is she with?" Sango asked.

"Shall we find out?" Miroku asked. As much as they hated to interrupt them curiosity got the better of them and they walked to the table Kagome was at.

"Hi Kagome. We didn't know you'd be coming here?" Sango said.

"Sango, Miroku, Inuyasha! I didn't know you were coming here either." She said a little nervously.

"Kagome dear are these your friends?" Ms. Higurashi asked.

"Hai, this is Sango, Miroku, and Inuyasha." She said.

"Nice to meet you all I'm Kagome's mother and this is her brother Souta." Ms. Higurashi said. Kagome sunk in her chair. She told them she didn't have any siblings. She was going to regret this.

They all were shocked to find out she had a brother. She told them she didn't have one. She didn't really talk about herself much. They would have to ask her later.

"How about we all eat together? We could move to a bigger table." Ms. Higurashi said. Kagome gave her a look not to mention anything.

"That's ok. We just saw Kagome and thought we'd say hi. We didn't mean to interrupt or anything." Inuyasha said speaking up for the first time. He saw the look Kagome gave her mom.

"Oh ok." She said.

They all split up. Kagome's friends went back to their table. Kagome explained to her mom what she had told them. Her mom didn't know. Soon after they talked like nothing happened.

Kagome walked into her apartment late that night. She was tired. She'd spent the whole day with her family. She was stressed out because her friends were going to want to know why she lied.

She just wouldn't go to school tomorrow then. She needed a day off from stress. She walked into the bathroom and took a bath. After that she went to her room and went to sleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day Inuyasha went to his locker. Kagome wasn't there. She was usually there getting her stuff when he got there. He went to class and thought nothing of it.
Sango, Miroku, and Inuyasha met at the bench like they did everyday when it was lunchtime. "Where's Kagome?" Inuyasha asked.
"She didn't come to school today I guess. She wasn't in any of the classes I have with her." Sango said. "Do you think it was because of yesterday?"
"I don't know." Inuyasha said. "Maybe we shouldn't ask her anything about it."
"I wonder why she lied about having a brother?" Sango said.
"Kagome does not seem like the type who likes to lie. I'm sure she had good reason behind it." Miroku said. Everyone nodded and ate their lunch.
Inuyasha stopped at his locker after school to drop off his books. Sango and Miroku couldn't go anywhere after school today. Sango had karate lessons and Miroku's parents were coming home today.
He stopped by a bakery and bought some cookies. He was going to go to Kagome's apartment. He thought she was sick or something. She looked fine yesterday. He was the only one who knew where she lived.
He'd only been there that one time. Nether him or Kagome told anyone. He was sure Kagome didn't tell anyone. Its not like he went around and bragged about doing good deeds to everyone.
He was worried about her. She seemed nervous when they came to the table he could have sworn he smelt some fear. He never wanted to smell that on her again.
