Summary: Naraku is finally defeated and Kagome now holds a completed Shikon no Tama in her possession. After making her wish, she finds herself in a sticky situation. Her little fantasy of what would happen after her wish is far from what she’s left with. Dealing with the aftereffects of her wish, she finds herself embarking on a new journey; defeating new enemies, making new friends, and possibly, finding a new love.
Disclaimer: Inuyasha is the creation of Rumiko Takahashi. I do not own him, the Anime/Manga, nor any of the characters. However, this story does belong to me, as well as any original characters I might throw in.
“Damn it all! Damn it all! Damn it all!!!” A woman with long, wavy, black hair kneeled at the base of an old dry well, pounding the lip with her fists as she cursed. “Damn it all to hell!!” As she continued to rant and swear, a bush rustled not too far from her.
“Go talk to her Miroku! You’re the most level-headed of all of us!” A female voice whispered harshly.
“Don’t be so rash, my sweet! Besides, you’re closer to her and you’re a female!” A male voice hissed back.
“Go or you’ll have to answer to Hiraikotsu!” A moment of silence passed.
“Fine Sango. I just hope--” The sentence was left unfinished as a black-haired monk in purple robes stumbled ungracefully from some bushes. The monk turned to glare at the bush before taking a deep breath and making his way to the woman at the well. By then, the woman had slumped against the old, wooden well, her usually sparkling sapphire eyes staring listlessly at the sky. He approached as silently as he could, gripping Shakujou tightly.
“Kagome-sama,” He froze as lifeless blue eyes fell on him. Swallowing, he managed to finish his sentence. “Mind if I join you?” The miko nonchalantly gestured to the space beside her. Settling in beside her, he held his staff to his shoulder as he examined his hands. “You know, I never got to thank you. Your wish removed the wind tunnel. And brought back Sango’s family, Kohaku included. Now Sango and I can raise the family we’ve always wanted. Your wish truly brought us happiness.”
“I’m glad, Miroku.” Kagome’s voice was soft, yet he could detect the sorrow she was trying so desperately to keep from her voice. She gave him a strained smile. “I’m glad my wish brought someone happiness.”
“You’ve made us all happy, Kagome.” Miroku’s voice was steady, firm. “Not only just me and Sango. Kouga’s comrades have been revived, and ah, Lady Kikyo has been brought back and. . . .”
“And Inuyasha is happy that he can finally be with his love,” Kagome whispered, tears brimming in her eyes. Miroku remained silent, not sure as to what he should say. But he was saved from that as she continued to talk. “I know I probably sound selfish and greedy, but. . I imagined that after I’d made the wish, Inuyasha and I would end up together. . I honestly believed he felt something for me, and I felt, in time, he’d come to love me as I love him. But it seems that even after all this, I’m still left with nothing.” She gave a dry laugh. “Listen to me, going on and on about my damned selfish problems when I should be happy like everyone else.” She smiled wistfully. “And look at you and Sango! Not one week after Naraku’s death and already Sango is pregnant! Make sure I’m the godmother of your child alright?” She gave him a wide smile, the first real smile in days.
“You should expect nothing less, Kagome-sama!” He smiled and rose to his feet, offering her his hand. When she accepted it and stood, he placed a hand on her shoulder. “Kagome,” he began, his voice serious, “Don’t let this bring you down. Did you ever stop to think that maybe you and Inuyasha were never meant to be? It pains me to say this, but move on Kagome.” He paused. “Besides, your destiny is not yet fulfilled; I feel the restlessness in your aura.” He gave her shoulder a comforting squeeze. “And you can do better than a grumpy, foul-mouthed Hanyou.” He smiled when she giggled. They began walking back to the village, running into Sango at the edge of the forest. The Taijiya had slung her arms around the Miko and given her a tight hug, and they continued their trek back to Kaede’s hut, Sango’s arm around Kagome’s shoulders while they giggled and talked about the baby. Miroku smiled as he followed them, his chest swelling in pride at the thought of he and Sango’s child, while his heart was reassured that his friend was not hurting so much anymore. His thought strayed to the cause of Kagome’s troubles; Inuyasha and Kikyo. When the once undead miko had shown up at the village a few days ago, Inuyasha had immediately gone to her and apparently, they were now a couple. Miroku couldn’t understand why Inuyasha picked Kikyo over Kagome. The older miko may have been brought back to life, but she was still cold and slightly detached. He sighed, deciding it was a waste of time to try and figure out what Inuyasha was thinking when he made his decision. Really, he wasn’t too sure he even wanted to comprehend Inuyasha’s kind of thinking. He shivered at the thought.
“Where are ye going, child?”
“I’m just going for a walk, Kaede-ba-chan. I need to stretch my legs a bit. I’ll be back soon.”
“Ye best take care, Kagome.”
“I will. I’ll be back in time for bed.” She murmured her farewell as everyone bid her goodbye. Miroku and Sango glanced at each other warily as Inuyasha, Kikyo, Shippo and Kaede continued to eat.
Grabbing her bow and quiver before setting out, Kagome quickly shouldered both items. Sprinting her way into the forest and towards the well, she made it there in record time, without breaking a sweat. Lying in the grass near the well, she allowed her senses to spread as she thought, in case danger lurked nearby. ‘I really thought Inuyasha and I would end up together. But I guess Miroku was right. Maybe he and I were never meant to be. Why else would Kikyo be resurrected twice?’ Her thoughts wandered to Miroku’s words earlier. ‘The restlessness in my aura. . . Destiny not yet fulfilled. I don’t exactly understand, but I can say that I feel something like that. Like my purpose here is not yet done, like there is more to this than completing the Shikon no Tama and destroying Naraku.’ She snorted mentally. ‘Who knew it’d be so easy to kill Naraku? All it took was one untrained miko from the future to slay him, where not even Sesshoumaru’s Tokijin or Inuyasha’s Tetsuaiga could do enough damage. Okay, so maybe I’m not untrained anymore, and Kikyo did admit that my powers surpass even hers in her prime. Still, it all seems too easy.’ She turned over to rest on her elbows, struggling a bit in the constrictive kimono. ‘Okay, I seriously need to find better clothes here. No point in using my uniform anymore, since I’m sealed on this side of the well.’ Her thoughts wandered to her family in the future. ‘I do miss Mama, Souta and Jii-chan, but it’s not killing me. I knew somehow that I would end up here anyway. And who knows, maybe I’ll defy time and live to see them again.’ She snorted. ‘Yeah, and I’ll end up traipsing around feudal Japan with a big sword and a gay guy.’
Kagome didn’t know how right she was.

Kagome excused herself as she set down her half-eaten bowl of food, drawing worried glances from a few people who were still eating.“Where are ye going, child?”

-End Chapter-
A/N: Action coming up in the next chapter. A discovery is made, people get killed, and Kagome sets out; with three new people. If you like this fic so far and want me to continue, be sure to review. I’m working on several different fics at the moment and I won’t continue this if no one likes it. I really wanted to do this story because the pairing this fan fic focuses on is pretty rare. But, they’re one of my favorite pairings! And no! I’m not telling anyone who Kagome ends up with!
