Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha, so please don't sue me.. I can't afford to be sued.. I'm broke =(
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~< br> Inuyasha sat outside the hut, waiting for the all-clear from Kaede telling him Kagome was decent and he could come back in with Miroku. After nearly ten minutes of waiting, he was impatient and, although he would never admit it, slightly worried, to say the least. 'What the hell is going on in there?!' Inuyasha's thoughts raced at all of the possible things that might be wrong to take Kaede so long. 'What did Kaede find? Did Naraku really hurt her that bad? Was I too late? Dammit, if only I hadn't been stopped by Naraku to fight! I got way too carried away with it! I completely forget the reason I was there, just like Naraku said! Damn him!!!' The hanyou's thoughts were brought to an end when the old priestess finally emerged from the hut. "How's Kagome? Is she gonna be okay?" Inuyasha asked in his normal husky tone.
"No need to worry, the child will be quite alright, now that she's back. I expect her to make a full recovery from this event, just like she always does."
"That's great news, Lady Kaede. Thank you. May I go in now?" Miroku asked politely, in his business-like tone he usually reserved for serious occasions.
"That ye may, dear monk."
"Hmph, you go on ahead, monk. I'm gonna go for a walk."
"But Inuyasha- don't you want to see that Kagome is indeed well?" Kaede asked worriedly.
"You said she was, didn't you, old hag? If you say she's ok, then I believe you. I'll see her later, when I feel like it," Inuyasha, rude as ever, walked off toward the neighboring woods.
"You go and do that, my good friend. No worries, I'll tend to the ladies and keep them company," Miroku added with a goofy grin as he strolled into the hut, his tone back to its normal, lecherous self.
"He's gonna get himself hurt," the hanyou muttered as he walked away. A resounding SMACK followed his retreating figure, along with two female voices yelling and screaming only God knows what.
Kaede sighed to herself outside her hut as a male voice joined the racket, attempting to explain and beg for mercy. "Ahhh, some people never change." She chuckled lightly as she decided to go the safest route... off toward the market. She was kind of running low on supplies... She listened as two women's wrath ensued on a poor monk, and decided she might as well pick more medicinal herbs while she was out, as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That night, after he was sure everyone was finally asleep, Inuyasha decided to slip outside for some fresh air. He needed to relax and let his nerves settle. Perched on the roof, he wondered why Kagome always got herself into so much trouble.
As if right on cue, he heard her familiar voice from the ground.
"Inuyasha, are you out here?"
The dog demon hesitated, as if unsure of whether or not he really wanted to be found, before giving his ever-so-confident sounding reply. "Up here."
She walked a little farther out, so that she could see him up there. "Oh, I was just wondering where you went. What're you doing up there?"
"What's it to you?" His voice dripped with its usual sarcasm and rudeness
"I was just curious! Why are you always so rude?!" she yelled at him in frustration! 'Gah! He's always so arrogant and rude! Can't he just have a normal conversation for once!!!'
"Heh, you're always curious, that's your problem." He pondered on all of the consequences Kagome's curiosity had brought upon everyone, namely herself, since he'd met her.
"Oh yeah? Well what's that supposed to mean, huh?!" A slight sound of pain was barely noticeable in her voice through the rising rage.
"You trying to wake the whole village?" he asked as he leaped lightly off the roof and began to walk off in the direction of the well. When Kagome just stared angrily at him, he looked back. "Well, aren't you coming?" he asked gruffly, and started walking off again. Kagome followed, stomping and muttering angrily behind him.
****************
"So?!" Kagome finally burst out, standing under the sacred tree and staring up at the indifferent hanyou, who had lead her here just to jump into the tree and stare off into space.
"So what?" Inuyasha asked, acting like nothing out of the ordinary was going on.
"So why did you bring me out here?!" She gestured around the woods. This was the place they had first met, and as she recalled the day, she wondered if Inuyasha ever thought about that fateful day when he came here as well.
"I dunno, you were the one yelling at me, weren't you?"
"So?!" Kagome burst out.
"So what?" Inuyasha asked, acting like nothing out of the ordinary was going on.
"Gah! We already went through this!"
"Then why the hell did you bring it back up?!"
"Ughhhh! I swear you're impossible!"
"I'm impossible!?! Feh! What about you! You're the one always getting yourself kidnapped! You're the one always getting into trouble! But I'M the impossible one? Damn wench, why do you always get in the way?!" Inuyasha snapped. The days adventure had definitely taken a toll on the temperamental hanyou's nerves.
"WELL EXCUSE ME, BUT THE LAST TIME I CHECKED, I ALWAYS GET INTO TROUBLE TRYING TO SAVE YOUR BEHIND! BUT WHO CARES ABOUT WHY I'M ALWAYS GETTING INTO TROUBLE, I'M JUST ALWAYS GETTING IN THE WAY, IS THAT IT?!?!"
"WELL MAYBE I DON'T NEED YOUR HELP, DID YOU EVER THINK OF THAT?!? MAYBE WHEN YOU THINK YOU'RE HELPING, YOU'RE JUST HOLDING THE REST OF US BACK! YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO TELL ME WHERE THE JEWEL SHARDS ARE, THAT'S IT!!"
The look of utter shock and pain on her face made him regret everything that had just spewed from his big mouth. He really hadn't meant any of it. She was more of a help than he would ever let on, but still, she did kind of hold them back sometimes.. maybe.. a little.... okay, truth be told, she never held them back. But Inuyasha was still too proud to let her know that, or at least not now. Finally, after a few minutes of silence, the hanyou spoke again.
"Keh, besides, it's not like I really need your help, anyways. I'm half-demon, remember? So why do you feel the need to help me all of the time when all it does is put you in danger? Humans are so stupid sometimes."
"Oh, so now I'm stupid, huh?" Kagome asked brokenly and fiercely at the same time.
"No, you just act like it." Inuyasha inwardly cringed at his words. He was defiantly digging his hole deeper instead of fixing it. 'Damn women, always taking men's words and twisting them around, even if they didn't intend them like that. She knows that I don't think she's stupid and that wasn't what I meant!!'
"Well, I actually believe you are the stupid one for asking me such stupid questions. 'Why do I feel the need to help you all of the time.' Please, tell me you weren't serious!!"
Cocking his head slightly, the inuhanyou felt extremely out of the loop. 'Do I really already know the answer? My memory isn't that bad, is it? Or did she say something that would insinuate the answer to someone else, and simply thought she had told me? Damn her, now I'm really confused!' "Actually, I was serious. Why?"
"Because I love you, you baka!!" she finally shouted through tears and blinding fury. Spinning violently on her heel, she raced away from the stunned hanyou, too upset to think about anything she was currently doing.
***************************
His mind had shut down at her blatant proclamation, and he watched her leave with unseeing eyes. 'Because I love you...' the words continued to echo within his mind. Although he was completely unaware of it, his heart broke at the sight of her fleeing figure in the distance. And maybe, had he still been in the right state of mind, he would have chased after her. But, as the fates would have it, he wouldn't notice her absence until hours later. 'Because I love you...' Her words repeated themselves again, and again..
***************************
She didn't know where she was going, only that it was away from him. Far away. She focused only on her feet, moving to their own rhythm, willing them not to trip. She concentrated on running as fast as she could, moving as if her life depended on it. The sun's golden rays suddenly caused a grayish glow out in the east. 'Sunrise already?' The split second of distraction was all she needed, though, for her clumsy side to finally resurface. Just as she was nearing a clearing in the forest, her foot caught on one of the many large roots protruding from the ground, sending her careening face first in to the dirt. Looking up, the young miko noticed that she was staring into the side of the bone-eater's well. Without any hesitation whatsoever, a very distraught and hurt Kagome flung herself over the side into the black pit down below.
