Chapter 7: Never Say Never
I didn’t sleep much after Taro went to sleep. Bringing up the memories wasn’t what hurt. It was having to tell my son he probably wouldn’t meet his father that almost killed me.
I expected him to cry, for him to tell me he hated me and it was all my fault that he didn’t have a father. But he didn’t, all he said was he loved me and asked the questions he wanted answers to.
It was normal for him to wonder about his father, but I’m worried about how he will react when he is older. He’s only five years old, things like this don’t sink in as quickly with kids than they do adults.
I’m terrified that one day he’ll wake up and he’ll see things so clearly all at once that the light may end up blinding him. I know once he is older and really understands then he’ll feel abandoned.
I don’t want him hating anyone, not even his father. I may harbor some bitter feelings towards the past, but I want my son to judge things for himself. I don’t want him seeing everything from only my point of view.
I got up early, after spending many hours staring at the ceiling I gave up on trying to sleep. I looked in at Taro who was still sleeping. He was curled up on one side of the bed with his knees bent up near his chest. He was huddled under the covers like a turtle in his shell and I smiled at his infantile sleeping position.
I slowly closed the door and walked into the kitchen. I poured myself a glass of water and set on the table in front of me. I stared at the glass and spaced out. My mind was a complete blank as I watched a few beads of water slide down the side of the glass to create a ring on the table.
There wasn’t much to think about. I had explained things, I told him what he wanted to know but I still felt so empty and responsible. I don’t know why I always feel this way.
These emotions only come to me when I’m alone. When I’m with Koga, or surrounded by friends my mind gets pulled in different directions. I revert to basic thinking like listening when others talk then think of a response.
When my thoughts are so spread out I don’t have time to think, I don’t dwell on my mistakes. When I’m alone they come back interrupting my life and any peace of mind I may have found in the last 24 hours.
The silence was deafening as I sat there not moving, just staring at the kitchen table. I couldn’t explain it, but something felt as if the small amount of progress I made rebuilding my life was about to be crushed down in an instant earthquake.
Some people have ESP, others, like me, just wait for something to go wrong. I’m hanging on by a thread and when bad things pull me down the thinner it gets. Eventually I know it can only take so much pressure, until SNAP. The thread will break and I’ll fall on my face.
I started mentally going over all the good things that happened lately. I met Koga, we now have a relationship, him and my son get along, Sango’s getting married and asked me to be the maid of honor, and I finally let go of my past. Yup, all that’s left is the apocalypse to ruin everything.
After staring at the glass some more I poured the water down the drain and put the glass back in the top cabinet. I went into the bathroom and turned on the hot water, letting the tub fill.
I thought maybe a hot bath would help me relax so I could sleep. If not, I was sleeping in tomorrow. I was off on weekends, and tomorrow was Sunday. Maybe I could take Taro somewhere special to ease him into the readjustments we were going to make. If Koga was my boyfriend now I had to introduce this idea to Taro.
After our discussion last night I thought it might be a good idea to cheer him up. Maybe if I could get Koga to go he might feel more secure about the whole situation, maybe even comfortable knowing he had a sort of father figure in his life. It was worth a shot.
I laid in the tub, with the hot water surrounding me and lulling me into a state of calm serenity. My muscles relaxed and I could feel my eyelids start to droop.
I knew I would fall asleep soon. I got out and dressed in a large t-shirt before going to bed. I was almost instantly asleep.
I got up early that morning. I decided to let Taro sleep in. I called Koga to see if he wanted to do something with us today. When he answered he sounded surprised that I had even called.
“Hello?”
“Hey Koga, it’s Kagome.”
“Hey what’s up?”
“Well, actually I was wondering what you were doing today.”
“Nothing. Why?”
“I wanted to know if maybe me, you, and Taro could do something.”
“Sounds good to me. What did you have in mind?”
“I wanted to something special for him, and introduce him to the idea of me and you being together. I think it will help him adjust to it better if we all spend the day together. I was thinking we could take him to the amusement park.”
“Sounds good. What time did you want to go?”“I was thinking around 11:30. Its an hour drive and I want to go while its still in the afternoon.”“Okay I’ll pick you guys up in two hours.”
“See you then, bye.”
“Bye.”
After I hung up with Koga I immediately went to get a shower and get ready. Once I was dressed and ready I got Taro up. I only had an hour to get him ready and make him breakfast.
“Sweetie, its time to get up.” He just yawned and mumbled something incomprehensible before rolling away from me to the other side of the bed.
“If you don’t get up you’re not gonna get the surprise I planned for today.”“Really, a surprise?” He asked wide eyed.
I nodded “Yup, so get up and get dressed Koga is coming to pick us up in a little while to take us there.”
“Where? Mr. Koga is coming?”
“Yes, and I cant tell you where we’re going or it will take all the fun out of the surprise.” He looked happy that Koga was coming. Maybe he would like the news we had to tell him. I was a odd mixture of excitement and worried.
I heard the doorbell ring just as I finished the dishes and prayed that everything went well as I walked to open the door. I grabbed our jackets and Taros hand before opening the door for him.
“Hi Koga.”
“Hi, are you guys ready.”
“Yes.” I answered, Taro just nodded. We walked to the car with Koga holding my left hand, and Taro holding my right.
I can only imagine what it looked like to others. One would guess we were a family. It was comforting to think about. The possibility of becoming a family was certainly appealing.
When we got the amusement park Taro’s face lit up. He was practically euphoric. Once we got through the gate and got our tickets Koga hoisted him up on his shoulders again. We let Taro make the decisions about where he wanted to go.
Our first stop was for the rides. He wanted to get on the helicopter ride first. He got on by himself saying he was big enough. We just laughed and watched from the railing. I was surprised with Koga’s patience and eagerness to spend time with him.
I tagged along, letting them do most of the things together. I was trying to give them time to bond. Koga got on a few of the kiddy rides and they both played a few games. Taro won a small stuffed animal. Koga had lost on purpose to him. I thought it was cute. Taro was so excited when he won the small bear. It was a blue teddy bear with big black eyes. He named it Blue. Creative name isn’t it?
After we all rode one of the smaller roller coasters we headed off to have lunch. Taro already had an ice cream, cotton candy, and caramel popcorn. I wanted him to eat something other than junk food.
“So what do you want to eat for lunch Taro?”
“Your letting me pick Mr. Koga?”
“Yup, its your day. So what are you in the mood for?”
“I want pizza.” For some reason I knew he was going to say that. We went to one of the food courts to get some pizza. We ordered a large pizza, half pepperoni, half sausage. As we ate I thought about when to talk to Taro about Koga. I figured I wait and talk to him at home alone. That way he wouldn’t feel uncomfortable sharing his opinion in front of Koga.
“So where do you want to go next. More rides?”
“Yeah I want to get on the train, and the merry-go round, and that one roller coaster that’s shaped like a dragon.”
“Okay, but one at a time. After that we have to go home, its going to get dark soon.”
After we finished eating Taro got on the train ride while me and Koga talked, watching him from the other side of the railing.
“So what did happen to his father anyway Kagome? He’s a great kid. I cant imagine a guy that could leave you and him.” Explaining this was a painful subject. But Koga deserved answers.
“His father left me for another woman. Taro is a great kid, but his father never knew that.”
“What?”
“I never told his father that I was pregnant. It was just after high school and when he left me and I thought it was better not to tell him. So I didn’t. I haven’t seen him in six years, he still doesn’t know. I prefer to keep it that way. If he found out it would just complicate things.”
“Aren’t you afraid he’ll find out?”
“Not really. I mean he moved far away to go to college so who knows whether he came back or not. I’ll probably never see him again.”
“How does Taro feel about it? I mean is he okay with not having a father?”
“He’s fine right now. I think it will hurt him when he’s older though. I’m afraid he’ll hate me when he’s older. I wouldn’t blame him, I mean I never told his father I was pregnant and he might never meet him. I cant help but blame myself for it all.”
“That’s stupid. He loves you and he might be upset but he wont blame you. When he’s old enough he’ll understand what it must have been like to be in that kind of situation. He’ll realize you did the best you could. I think you did one hell of a job.”
“Thanks.” Then I leaned over and kissed him. It was just a quick kiss on he lips. He was being so cute and sincere I just couldn’t resist. We turned our attention to Taro on the ride and waved when the train circled again. He waved back and we waited by the exit when the ride was over.
I could tell Taro was tired. He kept wanting me to carry him. My arms were beginning to hurt and I had to keep switching sides every few minutes. Not long after I started doing this Koga offered Taro a piggy-back ride to which Taro happily accepted. I sighed in relief and flashed Koga a grateful smile. He smiled back and knelt down so Taro could climb onto his back.
After a few more rides, two snow-balls, and another cotton candy later we left the park and headed home. Taro fell asleep in the back seat about ten minutes after we got in the car. We were all tired, but I could tell Taro was going to sleep soundly tonight.
Koga carried the sleeping Taro to the door and into his room for me. I took off his shoes and tucked him in. I decided to let him sleep in his clothes tonight. I just couldn’t wake him up.
I walked back into the living room, where Koga was lounging on the couch feet propped up and head lolled back. I almost laughed out loud at he sight he made. Apparently Taro was more exhausting than he originally thought.
“You look tired.”
“I am tired. How do you keep up with him so easily?”
“I’m his mother, I’ve had a bit of practice. I’m pretty much use to it.” I walked over and sat next to him. I leaned my head on his shoulder while his arm came around me. I smiled a small smile of contentment. We both just sat there leaning on each other trying to rest.
“Koga?”
“Hmmm?”
“ I wanted to ask you something… as my boyfriend.” I added the last part as an afterthought. I mean he was officially my boyfriend and I finally had a chance to say it out loud.
“Shoot.” He tried to be casual but I didn’t miss the grin he had when I called him my boyfriend.
“My friends are getting married. The engagement party is in two weeks. Would you be my date for the party?”
“Well I think I can do that. But on one condition.”
“Name the terms.”
“You come to dinner with me tomorrow night, and you’ll owe me a kiss.”
“Well I think I can do that.” I turned to him and kissed him. He deepened the kiss and somehow we ended up with him laying on top of me on the couch. We just kissed and cuddled for about an hour before he left. I walked him to the door. After fifteen minutes of playing the ‘one more kiss game,’ he left.
The next day I talked to Taro about Koga.
“Taro, I want to talk to you about something.”
“What?”
“I wanted to know if you like Koga?”
“Yeah he’s funny and he’s real nice to me. Why?”
“Well I wanted to make sure you liked him because I’m dating him now.”
“Oh. What does that mean?”
“It means we are really good friends but more serious. We’re a couple like Aunt Sango and Uncle Miroku.”
“Does that make him my daddy?”
“No sweetie, not yet. But he does like you a whole lot, and your friends with him.”
“Well I think its good that you have a new friend mommy.”
“Why is that?”
“Cause now you smile more.”
“Thank you sweetie. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
The next two weeks went by fast. Me and Koga went out almost every night and things were steadily getting more serious between us. We had been dating about two months I could see myself really falling for him.
Koga and Taro were getting closer. He even tucked Taro in a few times. I could tell how much he liked Taro, every time he read him a bedtime story he did different voices for each of the characters.
I knew me and Koga were getting serious. We had the engagement party in just a few hours. I was so excited for him to meet my friends. It felt like we were becoming a family. He said he would pick me up around 1:00 and I only had ten minutes left. I was wearing a short blue off the shoulder dress that flared out around my knees and had light blue flowers all over it. The neckline came down in a half circle shape. It was simple, but elegant. It complemented my curves and legs. I wore a simple pearl necklace to accent the midnight blue, and very little make-up. I left my hair down in spiral curls, reaching mid-back.
Taro was all dressed up as well. He wore a pair of black dress pants and a formal green button up long sleeve shirt. He looked like a little gentlemen all dressed up with his hair combed back neatly.
I was finishing the final touches on my make-up when I heard knocking at the door. When I answered I saw Koga also wearing black dress pants. His shirt was a long sleeve button up, with cuffs. It complemented his figure nicely and showed off his strong arms. His shirt was white, which went perfect with my dress. He kissed me on the cheek and we all drove to Sango’s for the engagement party.
The party was held at Miroku’s parents house. They had a huge back yard with a wide deck and patio. The furniture was cleared from the patio to serve as the dance floor and strings of white lights were weaved into the surrounding bushes. There were also lights strung around the yard hanging on the fence and lantern lights decorating the deck awning. There were calla lily flower arrangements with pink and lavender orchids. Everything looked beautiful. There were tables set up with food in buffet style. There were glasses of wine and Champaign being carried on trays by caterers. They had gone all out for this party. Everything looked great and I couldn’t wait until it got dark to see what all the lights would look like.
Sango looked beautiful, she was wearing a long pink strapless gown that had a v-neck and had intricate beadwork sewn in the shape of vines and flowers that looked like they were growing up her dress to stop just mid-calf. It was backless except for a few strings that crossed to make two small x’s. She had her hair done up in curls with small white flowers stuck in a few places to accent her dark hair. As soon as I walked out she ran to me and gave me a huge hug. Miroku soon walked up and stood beside her. He put his arm around her waist.
“Sango, you look beautiful.”
“Thanks. So where is he?” she asked immediately.
“Relax, he’s here. He just went to get me and him some drinks.” As Koga started walking back with a drink in each hand I saw Sango eyeing him. She looked at me and smiled giving a small nod, clearly saying she thought he was cute. Koga stood beside me after handing me my drink and put his hand at the small of my back.
“Sango, Miroku this is my boyfriend Koga. Koga, this is my best friend Sango, and her fiancé Miroku.” Koga took his hand from my back and shook their hands politely.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Sango was looking at him intensely. Obviously judging him. I felt sorry for him, I knew any minute he was about to play 20 questions with Sango. Me and her were like sisters, and she was very protective.
“Its nice to finally meet the man that’s been making Kagome smile this past month.” Miroku said smiling.
He turned and gave me a slight grin. “Well I’m glad I could make her smile.”
“Well I need to talk to Kagome about boring wedding details so you two guys get to know each other a little better.” Before anyone could reply Sango was already pulling me away towards the house. She dragged me into the kitchen which looked to be isolated.
“Oh my God Kagome he is so cute! This is so great. I’m so happy you finally found a decent boyfriend.”
“Thanks, but uh Sango?”
“Yeah?”
“Could you loosen your grip on my arm your kind of hurting me.”
“Oh sorry.” She pulled her hand from my arm and blushed. This was great, I could tell by her reaction that she liked Koga.
“So why don’t we go back out there and celebrate your engagement?” She nodded and we walked outside. People were dancing and drinking. Later we would have the big toast at dinner.
Sango and Miroku were busy greeting people and talking about the proposal. Me and Koga were having fun, drinking wine and dancing. The Champaign was for later. We didn’t see Sango and Miroku again until a few hours later.
“Hey Kagome, are you guys having fun?”
“Yeah, this party is great you guys. Everything looks perfect.”
“Miroku,” Sango said suddenly. “I still haven’t met your best man yet.”
“Yeah he’s always late. He’ll probably be here soon.” We all sat down and talked, once in a while getting up to dance. Taro was playing with the other kids in the yard. I was steadily drinking wine and was beginning to get tipsy. Koga was getting along with my friends and I was beaming.
We were standing on the deck, me and Koga were opposite Miroku and Sango. Miroku suddenly looked toward the door and smiled.
“Finally the best man is here.” Sango smiled getting ready to meet him as I heard footsteps approaching me from behind. I slowly turned around to greet him as well. When I did my heart stopped. Time froze as we stared at each other in disbelief. That’s the thing about the past, the second you forget, it comes back to bite you in the ass. Standing in front of me was the ghost of my past, arm linked in another woman’s. Standing in front of me was my worst nightmare suddenly come to life. Standing in front of me was the devil himself.
“Inuyasha?”
SNAP!
A/N: Sorry guys I forgot to mention that everyone is human in this story, including Inuyasha. And yes, he also looks human. Clear. Okay good.

“Inuyasha?”
SNAP!
