Kagome took Ayla by the hand and led her into the other room. Through the open doorway, Inuyasha and the others could hear Kagome and Ayla.
“Okay, your bedroll is all laid out and mine is next to yours. I’ll be in as soon as I’m done talking to the others, okay?”
“Okay, Momma.”
“Now prayers.”
“Okay. May the Lord preserve us from evil and keep us safe. Let the sun shine once more as a miracle and a promise of safety from the dark. Let the Light bless the souls that have moved on and may they protect the living from harm. May we stay safe from evil demons who are too stupid to know better-”
“Ayla!”
“Sorry. May our lives be lived to the fullest. And bless family and friend, living and deceased alike, with good fortune and happiness for the rest of their lives and afterlives. Amen.”
“Good. Now go to sleep and I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Good night, Momma. I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Kagome blew out the lantern in the bedroom, and moved out of the room, shutting the door behind her. She smiled at her friends as she sat down.
“It’s our little bedtime ritual.”
“No need to explain. Although, that prayer was rather interesting. I’ve never heard it before.” Miroku said, looking at Kagome in a curious manner.
“We made that up. Like I said before, things have changed in my time.” Kagome sighed. She stood up and poured herself a cup of tea, then sat back down.
“Kagome, I have a question for you.” Inuyasha shifted a little in his seat, but this had been driving him nuts. “I tried to come and get you a number of times, but I couldn’t cross. Why?”
“Ahh. Well, that is the beginning of this story. After I crossed, I had decided never to come back. So I had grandpa and Souta throw lots of big rocks down the well. That way, if I changed my mind, I could talk myself out of it before I could completely unbury the well. It was three weeks later I found out I was pregnant.
“You have no idea how terrifying it was to find out I was pregnant. I was in a panic for eight months solid. But then Ayla was born and when I looked into her beautiful big blue eyes, it was like all my fears were washed away.” Kagome smiled. “I watched her grow and learn to walk and talk, I saw her first tooth come in and I kissed her first scraped knee. I heard her first laugh and first cry, and I was there when she decided she was too big for diapers and wanted to be a big girl. My life was perfect.
“It was about four years ago when I first noticed the changes, though. My grandpa seemed to be aging at a very fast rate. He looked a lot older than he was, and then, before I could figure out why he looked so old, he died. Mom and Souta didn’t seem to notice this rapid aging though. They said that he looked the same as he always did. This was only the beginning.
“When Ayla turned two, That’s when I noticed the drop in the population. Within six months, Tokyo went from a roaring metropolis, to a quaint little town. Again, Souta and Mom said there was nothing different, and I thought I was going crazy, until Ayla said that she thought things were different too.
“The population continued to decrease, and technology seemed to reverse into that things like cars and electricity were never invented. It got even worse when demons started to attack.” Kagome stopped a moment. She took a sip of tea to compose herself. She looked at her friends and saw that they were avidly listening to every word she said. “You all may not know this, but Inuyasha knows. Demons in my time were considered myths. They weren’t real. So you can imagine my shock when they started attacking.
“Anyway, When I asked what Mom and Souta thought, they looked at me funny, saying that demon raids were normal, and that the best way to survive a demon raid was to hide. It was within a couple of weeks after the raids started that my mother was taken by one of those foul monsters, tearing her...” Kagome stopped a moment. She took a deep breath and continued. “They tore her apart as they flew away.
“So that’s when I began to do my research, to find out what had happened that time could change so drastically. I thought it might have to do with me and not completing the Shikon no Tama, but I had to be sure. So between learning how to fight with every weapon I could get my hands on, teaching my daughter basic school things, protecting the village and doing my priestess duties, I did my research on what happened in the past that would allow this future of demons with no intelligence, and their extermination of the human race.
“It was about a year ago when the demons attacked the shrine. I was in the village, tending to a sick child, when the demon alarm was sounded. I rushed out and saw that the shrine was under attack. Ayla and Souta were still there. So was the jewel shard that I had. I rushed over to the shrine, and saw that Ayla held the shard in her little hand, and she was glowing. The demons that attacked her disintegrated as soon as they touched her. Unfortunately, Souta was not so lucky. He was trying to get to Ayla to protect her and get her to safety, when a demon grabbed him from behind. It started to carry him off, but I shot it down. But not before it ripped off his right arm and leg.” Kagome choked back tears of sorrow and guilt. “He nearly died. It took him months to recover enough to get out of bed. I made a makeshift wheelchair so he could get around the shrine, because he refused to let his duties slide.” Kagome smiled a sad smile. “Ayla helps him all the time. She really likes helping him, even though she can’t go out and play then. Not that she did. In my time, they have the same mentality towards half demons as here. Except worse, since the demons are really dumb and raids kill off many people. They think half demons are just as bad. The people of the village tolerate Ayla because of me. I’m their only protection.
“It was a couple of months ago that I found what I was looking for. A passage in an old tome that said the jewel had been shattered and that most of the pieces had been gathered by one nasty demon that was bent on destroying all of human kind. I knew it was Naraku they were talking about, of course, so I decided to come back, and beat that son of a bitch to a bloody pulp.” Kagome sighed. “And besides, I think the only way to fix my time, is to heal the Shikon no Tama.”
When she finished her story, Kagome took another sip of tea. She looked at her friends, who all seemed to be in shock over what she had just told them. “Will you guys help me?”
“Of course Kagome, we were looking for the shards before you left, and it was nearly impossible to find them after.” Miroku looked at Sango. She was nodding in agreement as well, tears in her eyes. Sango could of course empathize with Kagome’s loss of family.
“We’ll leave just as soon as you’re ready, Kagome.” Inuyasha looked at her. “But what do you plan on doing with the kid?”
“Take her with us, of course.”
“You’ve gotta be kidding. She’s five! Don’t you think she’s a little young to be taking into battle?”
“I would prefer to leave her some place safe, Inuyasha, of course, but some place safe does not exist. She’s safer with us. And besides, If we run into Sesshoumaru, he might want to meet his daughter, don’t you think?”
“Feh. More like he’d rip her to shreds. Or have you forgotten that he’s not exactly fond of half demons?”
“I haven’t forgotten. But like I said, no one can hurt Ayla.”
“Whatever. When do you want to leave?”
Before Kagome could answer, Ayla’s soft voice floated through the door, calling for Kagome. Kagome’s face went white. She picked up her bow and arrows and headed into Ayla’s room at a quick pace. The other’s followed.
“Where?” Kagome asked Ayla as she glanced around the room.
Ayla pointed out the window at a tree. “Up there in the tree.”
Kagome took aim, and fired one of her arrows. To everyone’s surprise a shadow leapt out of the tree and took off down the path. Inuyasha cursed and looked out the window, trying to see who it was, while Sango and Miroku ran after it.
“Did it come in here?”
“Nope. It was just watching me with it’s red eyes.” Ayla smiled. “I’m okay.”
“Okay. Well, then, good night.” Kagome looked back to Inuyasha, who was still standing at the window sill. “Inuyasha, come on. Ayla needs to go to sleep.”
“Sure.” He turned away from the window and walked out of the room. He glanced at Ayla and stumbled when he saw the huge, admiring grin plastered on her face. He gave her a weak smile back and quickly shut the door. “What is up with that kid? Does she always smile like that?”
Kagome giggled. “No. She just really likes and admires you. She thinks of you like some kind of hero.”
“Great. Just what I need, a fan club.”
Miroku and Sango came back in, shaking their heads. “Sorry, it got away. How did you know that’s why she was calling you in?”
“That’s the only reason she calls me in. The first time Ayla did that, I thought it was like the monster under the bed most kids go through, but when I checked under the bed for her, a demon had really gotten under her bed. I was wounded, but Ayla destroyed it with her little shield. Since then, I make sure I have a weapon with me when Ayla calls me in after she goes to bed.”
“Does this happen often?” Sango sounded alarmed at the thought.
“Yes, actually. But it’s because of the shard I have. The demons want it, so they try to get her to get to me. You wouldn’t believe all the times Ayla’s been kidnaped.” Kagome said this like she was talking about the weather.
“Are you kidding me? How can you sound so calm about it?”
“Because, if I worried every time, I would have grey hair by now, and believe me, there is enough to worry about without adding that. Ayla usually destroys the demon and comes back within the first half hour. Sometimes it takes up to an hour.” Kagome smiled. “She thinks that every time she kills a demon, she’s saving the world.”
At this, the others were speechless.
“Okay, I think we should leave in the morning. Bright and early.” Kagome smiled at her friends, who continued to gawk at her. “Good night.”
