Ayla laughed as she soared through the air on Inuyasha’s back. They were racing Kilala and at the moment, Ayla and Inuyasha were winning. “You’re so fast!”

“Yeah! Takes lots of years to learn to run this fast!” Inuyasha hollered over his shoulder. He gave her a quick smile before turning his attention back to the scenery ahead. He felt a deep sense of pride that this little girl thought so highly of him. He couldn’t figure out whether it was the fact that Ayla was Sesshoumaru’s daughter and in a small way this was like getting his older brother’s approval, or if it was the fact that Ayla was a half demon and looked up to him for guidance.

Ever since they had all left the village three days ago, Ayla spent most of her time with Shippou. They would play together whenever the group would stop. Except at night. Nights were reserved for Inuyasha. Ayla would ask him all sorts of questions; about what it was like for him growing up, how did he deal with the nasty looks that people would give him, who helped him when he couldn’t help himself, and how he knew who to trust. These were all very adult questions from someone only five years old. But in five years, Ayla had seen and done more than most in a whole lifetime.

After Ayla was done asking questions, she and Inuyasha would spar. He taught her to dodge and attack and taught her some of his own techniques. Ayla was delighted to learn all Inuyasha wanted to teach.

Inuyasha and Ayla landed a little distance ahead of the others. Ayla jumped down and watched as Kilala landed with the others. She ran over to Kagome, gave her a hug around the waist and beamed up at her. “We beat you!”

Kagome laughed. “You certainly did. I forgot how fast Inuyasha was.” Kagome looked around the area. “Hmmm... It’s only a little before dusk. Why don’t we make camp here for tonight. You and Shippou can play a little while.”

“Really? ” Ayla and Shippou said in unison.

“Yes, now go play. I’ll call you for supper.”

Shippou and Ayla ran off through the woods, laughing and racing each other. Kagome watched as they disappeared into the trees. She was happy that Ayla had a friend.

Kagome turned around and walked over to Inuyasha. He, Miroku and Sango were setting up camp. “Thank you Inuyasha, for being so sweet to Ayla. I haven’t seen her this happy for ages.”

“Not a big deal. I’m only doing it because I know she won’t get help from Sesshoumaru, if he even cares that he has a kid.” Inuyasha glanced up from the fire. “You know, she asks really good questions. But she didn’t ask the biggie that I thought would be the first one she’d ask.”

“Oh? And what’s that?”

“What do I do when I turn fully human? She hasn’t even hinted towards it.”

Kagome, who’d been swallowing some water, choked. “Umm... Well, that’s because she doesn’t know.”

Inuyasha dropped the stick he’d been using to stoke the fire. “I beg your pardon? DOESN’T KNOW?! How is that even possible??? She’s five and she changes once a month! How could she not notice the changes?!”

“Because, She’s asleep by that time! I don’t want her to worry about it like I saw you worry. She’s five and she needs to grow up a little more before she worries about something she can’t control!”

“Kagome, she needs to know before she finds out the hard way! Trust me, it’s hard enough to deal with without it being a surprise!”

“Well, she’ll find out this time, because it’ll be really hard to hide the fact when we’re up until way past the moon rising. So you can explain it to her then. You will not mention it to her before that however. Do I make myself clear?” Kagome glowered at Inuyasha.

“Yeah, yeah...”

~~*~~*~~

Sesshoumaru moved towards the small camp. He had picked up their scent and was on his way to see them. Kagome would be pregnant and should know it by now, but if she didn’t he’d make sure she did. Although at the moment, she didn’t smell pregnant. Had she not conceived? Well, if she hadn’t, then he’d have to try again.

He moved up through the trees until he rested on the edge of the camp. He scanned the members of the party until his eyes rested on Kagome. His eyes widened when he saw the drastic changes. What happened to his Kagome?

Sesshoumaru sat there for a moment before deciding to come out and ask her what had happened to her. And to hell with Inuyasha if he wanted to fight him.

Sesshoumaru stepped out of the trees and walked towards the group. Kagome and Inuyasha were discussing something, but Kagome cut him off when she saw Sesshoumaru coming over. She stood up, looking nervous. Inuyasha turned around and growled when he saw who it was.

“Sesshoumaru, you have a lot of nerve coming here! After you raped Kagome, and made her feel worthless, I’ll kill you for that you bastard!” Inuyasha began walking purposely towards Sesshoumaru, his hand resting on his sword.

Sesshoumaru ignored Inuyasha. If Kagome told him that she was raped, that was her decision to do so. He and Kagome both knew the truth.

“Sit.”

Thud.

“Kagome!”

“You deserve it. I told you before. He didn’t rape me. And saying so only makes me look like a liar. Now behave yourself, before I make you.”

Kagome looked over at Sesshoumaru. Now what? He obviously wasn’t here to fight. And he was looking at her with that curious look again. He opened his mouth to say something, but the sound of children’s laughter cut him off. Out of the trees ran Ayla and Shippou.

“Momma! We’re not far from the river and we were wondering if we could go swimming! Please, Momma?” Ayla jumped up and down in front of Kagome, oblivious to the tension inside the small camp.

Kagome looked down at her daughter. What was she supposed to say? ‘No, I think you should stay here and get to know your father. Oh and by the way Sesshoumaru, this is your daughter.’ Yeah, that would go over well.

“Momma, what’s wrong?” Ayla asked. She turned and looked around. She focused on Sesshoumaru and she blinked in surprise. “Oh! I’m sorry. We have a guest. Momma, is this a friend of yours?”

“...Yeah. He’s a friend...”

Ayla smiled toothily at Sesshoumaru and curtsied. “How do you do? My name is Ayla.”

Sesshoumaru stared at the little girl. It was not possible that this child was his daughter. Kagome would only be three months pregnant. And he was positive this wasn’t Inuyasha’s. Kagome was a virgin when he took her.

Sesshoumaru inclined his head slightly. “My name is Sesshoumaru.”

“Nice to meet you.” She grinned up at him. Her smile faded slightly when she saw the crescent on his forehead. She looked at Kagome, then back at Sesshoumaru, realization dawning on her face. But instead of asking the obvious question, she looked back at Kagome. “Mamma, can we go swimming then?

“Yes, baby. Go on. I call you when dinner’s ready.” Ayla and Shippou ran through the woods again back the way they had come.

Kagome sighed. Ayla knew. It was obvious, but she hadn’t said anything. She was probably waiting for Kagome to tell her. She turned and looked at Sesshoumaru. “Sesshoumaru, that was your daughter.”

“How is that even possible? You should only be three months pregnant.”

“Well, you wouldn’t know this, but I’m from 500 years in the future. I use a magic well to travel between my time and now, but the well’s magic is messed up and I’ve been gone for six years, not three months.”

“Pardon me?”

“If you don’t want to be her father, you can... Wait a minute. You said ‘should only be’! You KNEW I would be pregnant?! You got me pregnant on purpose? After saying it meant nothing?!”

“I lied.”

Kagome’s eyes popped at that. “Lied?”

“Yes. It was my plan to get you pregnant.”

“You son of a bitch! She left because of you!” Inuyasha snarled at Sesshoumaru.

“If I recall, she was upset that night. I believe she was cursing you when I came upon her.”

“Why you-”

“That’s enough. From both of you. I told you, Inuyasha it was a combination of everything that made me leave. It wasn’t just you or him. Now knock it off.”

“KAGOME!! HELP!! SHE TOOK AYLA!!!”

~~*~~*~~

Ayla giggled as she stripped off her clothes and jumped into the water. The water was cool against her skin but her demon blood made it tolerable.

Shippou jumped in, splashing Ayla as he landed. Both children laughed and began a water fight. “Take that!” Said Shippou as he used his tail to fling water at Ayla.

“No fair! I don’t have a tail!”

“Too bad! Ha!” Shippou climbed out of the water and into a tree. “I’d move if you don’t want to get splashed!” He said as he leapt out of the tree. He rolled himself into a tight ball but the air around him seemed to start lifting him up into the air. “Ahhhh!!”

“Shippou, that’s no fair! You can’t fly!” Ayla scowled up at the kitsune. Then she blinked. Shippou was hanging just below the bottom branch of the tree, and above him was the red eyed demon that had been watching her the other night. “Oh. It’s you. I was wondering if you’d be back.” Ayla climbed out of the water and began to get dressed. When she finished, she turned back to the demon.

“How do you do? I’m Ayla. Would you mind putting Shippou down now?”

“How do you do, Ayla. I’m Kagura.” The she-demon said. “I’ll put the fox down in a minute. Right now I have to ask you to come with me. My lord is very interested in meeting you.”

“Really? Well, I would really like to meet this lord of yours, but Momma might get a little upset with me. So, I’m sorry, I must decline.” Ayla said this with a small smile.

“I’m sorry to say, this isn’t an invitation you can decline.” Kagura threw something at Ayla, and the wind picked up. Ayla covered her eyes and fell to her knees when the ground seemed to move. She opened here eyes and saw she was on a large feather and Kagura was riding on it behind her.

“I said, I’m sorry, but no thank you!” Ayla stood up and jumped off the feather. She soared downward watching as the trees grew larger, but before she even was half way down, the wind picked up and lifted her back onto the feather.

“I’m afraid that won’t work. Try that again and I’ll keep you hanging in mid air until we reach the castle.”

“You're mean.” Ayla gave her a sour look.

Shippou watched in horror as Ayla was carried away on the feather. The air around him suddenly let him fall to the ground. As soon as he picked himself up, he raced back to the camp.

“KAGOME!! HELP!! SHE TOOK AYLA!!!”
