Part 6
~*~*~
Naraku watched as Kagura silently guided the child into the audience chamber, then turn and leave. The little girl didn’t look or smell afraid. In fact, she seemed almost content. The child turned and began to investigate the room.
Naraku watched her for a while, taking notes of her features. With that long silver hair and little puppy ears, it was impossible to overlook her relation to Inuyasha. But was she daughter, or niece? The little crescent on her forehead said niece.
Naraku stepped out of the shadows and waited for the girl to notice. She did notice, immediately. It was almost like she knew he’d been there, but hadn’t said anything.
Ayla walked toward the towering demon and smiled politely up at him. “How do you do? My name is Ayla.” She curtsied low, then looked up at Naraku. “Would you mind telling me why you wanted to meet me? Momma is gonna be mad at me if I’m late for dinner.”
Naraku stared at the child. She definitely wasn’t afraid of him. “I brought you here so that your mother and her companions would give me their jewel shards in return for your safe return.” He looked down at her.
“I take it then that you aren’t gonna let me go back to camp?” He gave a negative shake of his head. Ayla sighed. “Didn’t think so.” Her eyes went up and met his sharply. “It’s bad manners not to at least tell me your name. You kidnaped me, you should at least tell me who you are.”
Naraku narrowed his eyes on the girl. “My name is Naraku and you’re going to explain to me why you seem to think you can get away with telling me how I should act.”
Ayla shrugged. “You can’t hurt me, and it’s only polite to tell me your name. You should have done so earlier, Mister Naraku.”
“And, prey tell, why do you think I cannot hurt you?”
“You can’t. You can try, though. But you’ll just die, so then I can go home.” She looked up at him. “Are you intending to kill me?”
“Not at the moment.” Naraku was taken aback at her lack of fear and her confidence. He looked away from her, intending to put her confidence to the test. “Kohaku.”
Ayla turned toward the door and watched as a young boy entered the room. His eyes held no emotion as he looked at Naraku. Ayla could sense the spell that was placed on him. It was like looking at a puppet.
“Yes, Master Naraku.”
“Kill her.”
“Yes, Master Naraku.”
Kohaku turned and walked over to Ayla, raising his scythe as he approached. When he stood before her, he brought it down hard, aimed to cleave her in half. But when the scythe was an inch from the top of her head, a pink glow surrounded her. Lightning shot out from the place where the scythe was touching the glowing field around Ayla. It wrapped around Kohaku, causing his body to jerk. He screamed as he was sent flying away from Ayla, landing hard, and then he laid still.
Ayla was afraid she’d killed him. She held her breath as she watched for signs of life. She was used to killing demons, but not humans. After a moment Kohaku groaned and sat up. Kohaku’s eyes landed on her, and it surprised her that they weren’t blank any more. They were wide with shock and horror.
A sob was ripped from the boys throat, and Ayla could tell it wasn’t because of the shock he’d received. It was something else, like a very deep trauma he would rather not face. Naraku moved over to the boy and place a hand on his back. “You may leave.”
The boy’s features went slack and his eyes deadened again. The sobs died and the tears on his cheeks forgotten as he stood up. “Yes, Master Naraku.” The boy turned and walked out of the room.
Naraku stared after Kohaku. What had just happened was impossible. The shard in his back had been purified and all the spells placed on the boy and been dissolved. He turned and looked at Ayla. She was also staring wide eyed after Kohaku. Was it possible that this child had done that? And if so, how?
Naraku stood up and walked over to Ayla. He took her arm and led her out of the room.
“Where are we going?”
“I’m taking you to your room.”
“Oh. So I’m staying here?”
“Yes.”
“Oh.” Ayla slipped her arm out of his grasp, and placed her hand in his.
Naraku made no comment about her movement, but was surprised by the gesture of trust. She really must think she was safe. “You will be confined to you room. I warn you not to try to leave, because there will be wards placed at all exits and you will not be able to pass through them.”
“I promise to be a good girl.” Ayla said with a smile. “Don’t worry.”
~~*~~*~~
Kagome paced back and forth. Every line in her body was tensed with worry. “Kagome, you said it yourself. Ayla can take care of herself, and will probably be back before you know it.”
Kagome glanced over at Inuyasha. “I know I said that, but I meant that against the demons in my time. They don’t have any brains, so they are easy work for her.” She continued to pace.
Sesshoumaru watched Kagome. He kept his features smooth but inside he was wrought with worry too. That little angel of a child at first sight had taken hold of his heart and now he felt like he may have lost his chance to know his daughter forever.
To get his mind off of that line of thought, he asked Kagome, “Why are the demons in your time so lacking in mental abilities?”
Kagome stopped her pacing and looked at him. He had surprised everyone by deciding to stay and help get Ayla back. She was grateful that he seemed to be showing an interest in their daughter.
Without a word, Kagome moved over to her bag and began to dig through it. She found what she was looking for and turned around. In her grasp was a very large and very old book. She sat down and flipped through the pages until she found what she was looking for.
“It says: With the power of the magic shards, the great and terrible shadow loomed over the land, leaving death and destruction where ever he passed. He spawned many who were loyal to him and only him, having no mind but his. They feasted equally on the living and the dead, ever searching the land for their master’s missing treasure.
“It’s talking about Naraku. He’s the shadow over the land, those idiot demons are his army, and the treasure is the missing fragment of the jewel shard that I have.” She closed the book and sighed. “And of course, it’s all my fault since that happened because I left and didn’t finish the damned Shikon no Tama.”
“Don’t blame yourself, Kagome. That’s why you came back.” Sango said, placing an arm around her friend’s shoulders.
Kagome took the comfort, but it wasn’t long before she was pacing again, her thoughts back on Ayla.
“Kagome, what is the matter with you? You were the one that told us we didn’t need to worry. So why are you?” Inuyasha said as he watched her pace. He hated this not being able to calm her down.
“Inuyasha, do you remember what we were talking about before? You know about her not knowing she changes to full human?”
“Wait. Are you saying she’s going to lose her defenses soon?” At Kagome’s nod he prodded her further. “How long do we have?”
“She changes the same night you do.”
All the color drained from Inuyasha’s face. “God, that means... Kagome, we only have four days ”
Kagome nodded vigorously, and continued to pace. “If we don’t get there before then, he can kill her. And what’s worse is she has my fragment of the jewel shard. So he’ll have no reason to keep her alive then.”
“Yes he does.” Miroku held up his shard and Sango held up hers. “If he wants these, he’ll have to keep her alive. And I don’t think he’ll hurt her when she changes.”
“All the same, Miroku. I’d rather him not finding out when my daughter loses her powers.”
“Kagome, why does Ayla have your shard?”
“Because she can mask it’s aura. It’s on a bracelet on her wrist. He won’t even notice it unless he sees it. Or when her powers fade.” Kagome made a sound of distress in her throat.
“Get some sleep.” Sesshoumaru said, startling the others. They had forgotten he was there. “We’ll leave early in the morning to continue our search.”

I get a few inquiries about Ayla's name. It means Oak Tree, or if you really wanna go the mystical route, it means the light ring around the moon and stars. And I just liked the name. I've never read Clan of the Cave Bear, but, LOL, a friend of mine asked me the same question not that long ago. Hmmm...I guess I'm gonna have to read it now.
Hope you enjoyed this part. I know not much happened, but *evil grin* don't worry. Lots of stuff's gonna happen before I'm done.
Huggles to all my wonderful reviewers!!! Thanks for the kind words of encouragement and Keep it up!!! I write only to please you, and the more reviews I get the faster I write!!! ^_^
