“I want you to give me a tour of your palace.”

Naraku looked over at the young child. “Why would you want to do that?”

“It’s something to do and I’m really bored.” Ayla smiled up at him. “Besides, Momma is gonna be here for me soon, and I won’t get a chance to look around after she gets here.”

“What makes you think she’ll be here soon?”

“Easy. Tonight, there’s no moon and she makes me go to bed really early. She’s afraid to leave me alone when the moon’s all dark, so she’ll be here.”

Naraku stared at Ayla. I wasn’t possible that he had the good fortune to have her on her night of weakness. But what else could it be? Ayla was otherwise untouchable, but if her mother was reluctant to leave her unprotected on this night, that could be the only explanation. But the child was right. If it really was her night of weakness, Kagome and the others would be arriving this night.

“You wish to have a tour?”

Ayla grinned and nodded. “Uh, huh. Yep! I do.”

“Very well.” Naraku stood up and moved through the doorway, not bothering to make sure she was following him. He guided her through the palace, stopping at places he thought might interest the child. Anything to keep her happy. She would be his after tonight, as long as he was able to keep her trust.

“What’re those?” Ayla asked, pointing at some very ugly jars sitting on a shelf, slightly hidden from view.

“Those are the jars that give me the ability to control my children.”

“Huh?” Ayla looked curiously at the jars. “What’s inside, and why do you need to control your kids? Um... What kids?”

“Kagura is one of my children. without my guidance, she might very well do something that might hurt other people.”

“But what’s in the jar?”

“Nothing you need to worry about.” Naraku guided her away from the room. “It is getting late. It will be nightfall soon, and I wish to see something.”

Naraku guided her back down the hall, to an outside garden. There, he would be able to see the night fall and witness the effects on Ayla as they happened. The young girl kept up a steady stream of chatter for the little remaining time before dusk. Just as the sun was setting, Ayla stopped and looked at Naraku.

“I should go to bed, now. Momma won’t like it if I’m awake when she get’s here.”

“Do not concern yourself with that.” Naraku said. He glanced out the window and watched as the sky quickly darkened. He then turned his full attention to the little girl.

It was the most incredible transformation he’d ever seen. As she stood there looking at him, her eyes faded to a soft grey, and the crescent on her forehead seemed to lighten and blend into her pale skin. Black, silky waves washed down her silver hair and curled down her back, staining it midnight. Her hair was also thick with curls, washing away the thoughts of her long straight hair.

“Mr. Naraku? I should go to bed. I feel funny.”

A smile of satisfaction crossed over Naraku’s face. “Look into the mirror, and see what your mother has been hiding from you.”

Ayla frowned, but obediently turned and looked into the mirror. Her large silver eyes grew even larger as she took in her new reflection.

“This is your night of weakness, Ayla. All half-demons have a night where they lose all of the gifts their demon blood gives them.” He walked over to Ayla and turned her so she was facing him. “You’ve lost all your protection this night. Any one with the intent to harm or kill you could easily do so, now.” To prove his point, he picked up Ayla’s hand and raised it so her palm could be seen by both of them. He placed his finger in the center of her palm and pulled it across the length of her hand, his finger nail sharply cutting through her skin, leaving a deep cut.

Ayla gasped and tried to pull away, but Naraku tightened his grip. “If I wanted to kill you, I could easily do so right now.” His free hand moved up her wrist and yanked the bracelet with the shard off her wrist. “This is all I wanted, Ayla. You should have given it to me when you arrived.” He released her wrist and stood up. “When your mother arrives, you may go with her. But not right away. I do not want you in harms way, so you will remain indoors until someone comes in to retrieve you. Do you agree?”

Ayla cradled her hand to her, and looked up at Naraku. “Okay. But can I at least come with you to greet them?”

“Of course, but then you come right inside.”

“Alright.”

With that settled, Naraku took Ayla’s hand and bandaged it up.

Kagome stared up at the castle, looming up in the darkness. Her heart was in her throat. Her baby was in there. And Naraku would have discovered her weakness. And the jewel shard. She wanted to run in there and and scoop up her baby and run as far and as fast as she could.

Sesshoumaru stared at the structure with his usual lack of emotion, but felt the same fear Kagome did. His daughter was in there, and he swore silently that if Naraku had harmed her in any way, he would rip him limb from limb.

Inuyasha was also nervous. His strength was gone and if Naraku survived tonight, he would know his night of weakness. Not to mention that Sesshoumaru could easily kill him too. Deep down, Inuyasha was afraid that was one of the reasons that Sesshoumaru had stayed to help. So he could eradicate the world of his hanyou brother and daughter; so he could ‘cleanse’ the family name, so to speak.

Miroku and Sango came back into sight. “The gate is open.”

“He was expecting us.” Sesshoumaru said softly. Naraku would be waiting for them when they entered the courtyard. He was certain.

“If he’s waiting for us, then lets go. I want to see my daughter’s face.” Kagome took a deep breath and without waiting for the others, quickly moved through the trees and across the field and entered the gates of Naraku’s palace.

Right behind her the rest of the group followed. Sesshoumaru was on her left, and Inuyasha was on her right as Miroku, Sango and Shippou brought up the end.

“Momma!” Ayla’s delighted voice floated over to them as she came into view. She had a big grin on her face as she jumped up and down, waving excitedly.

“Ayla!” Kagome went to rush forward, but both Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru through their arms in front of her, preventing her from moving forward.

Kagome then noticed that Naraku was holding Ayla’s hand, also preventing the child from going to her mother, and on the other side of Ayla was Kohaku.

“Ayla said you would be her tonight. When she transformed, I knew she was correct.” Naraku smiled a cold smile at them.

“Momma! Look at how I look! I look just like you! Except my hair is longer.” She smiled a big goofy smile that said she was very proud of the fact she looked like her mother.

“Baby, come here.” She held her arms out to her daughter, hoping the impossible would happen and her daughter would come.

Naraku tightened his hand. “Did you really believe I would put this child in danger?” Naraku’s smile took on a cruel satisfaction. “With that evil monster standing next to you? You can claim her after I eradicate that beast that fathered her.”

Ayla’s smile fell slightly as she looked at Sesshoumaru.

“Kohaku, take Ayla inside to her rooms.”

“Yes, Master Naraku.” Kohaku took Ayla’s free hand and guided her into the building.

“Bye Momma! Come and get me soon, okay?” Ayla shouted back over her shoulder as she disappeared into he building.

Kagome cried out and tried to go after her daughter, but Inuyasha prevented her from leaving. “Kagome, please! We need you to help take Naraku out!”

Kagome made a cry of despair, but she pulled herself together and looked at the monster that had taken her daughter, and destroyed her time.

Naraku just smiled.
