CHAPTER NINETEEN(wooooow! I got that far)
A Truth Uncovered
Kaede eyed Kagome with a scowl. "Ye are being a fool, Kagome!" Dai was sitting to the side. He had fallen asleep during the old miko and the young miko's arguments. (how conveniant)
Kagome gasped, exasperated. "But Lady Kaede, I don't know what to do? I just don't!"
"Kagome do ye love Inuyasha?"
"Of course."
"Really?"
"Yep." said the girl, resigned to answer.
"Ye are positive?"
Kagome sighed. "Absolutely." She's really not going to ask me again is she? She thought with annoyance.
"Are ye certain that this is so?"
Kagome gritted her teeth. "UH-HUH!"
Kaede lifted an eyebrow. "Quite certain?"
"YES! MUST YOU KEEP ASKING?!" Kagome snapped to the older woman.
Kaede sighed. "Ye do have a problem, girl. Think. Think before ye answer and then tell me. I'll try again. Do ye love said hanyou?"
Kagome opened her mouth as if to scream when Kaede's words finally sunk in. She closed her mouth indignantly and really thought about the whole situation. Inuyasha was great. He could be affectionate, a little, and he was quite nice, if you really had to think about it. He was well...he had great hair. Kagome frowned. Wasn't there something else? She bit her lip. Well, he did scanter off to Kikyo quite a lot and his feelings for Kagome did seem a bit forced and sudden and unexpected.... He was loud, ill tempered, disagreeable, stuck up, and terribly rude. No! No! No! Good points, Kagome! Good points! She really really had to think now. He was...he had dog ears?
This was not looking up.
So how did she feel about him. Kagome had to summon up his image into her thoughts. She grinned a little, but..BUT. She almost gasped with realization. When she had first met Inuyasha and got to know him a little, she had had a crush on him, but it was no big deal then. Then she learned about Kikyo and several such months later, she had decided that she loved him. Now though, she felt that he had become less important to her. He had betrayed Kagome so many times now that she hadn't been quite as close to him. He'd become distant. Uh oh. It seemed that..that.....I don't love him anymore! She panicked. Then she realized that Kaede was still waiting for an answer.
"Well?" the old woman said.
Kagome frowned. "No." Kagome watched as Kaede's eyes filled with relief.
"Good then. I had noticed that things had changed, but there ye were, still clinging to the past. So who has changed your heart, girl?" the old woman prodded.
"Nn." Kagome looked sadly at her hands. Who did? She thought dejected. Have I no one to love now? Dai stirred. Kagome looked his way and glowered where Dark was now sitting. "Dark." Kagome acknowledged. He was yawning widely and beautifully. His purple hair sprung carelessly about and his eyes glittered dangerously. His dark clothes melded with the darkness and made him look more evil still. Yet Kagome's heart did a fun little flip while she watched him smile and greet her casually.
Old Kaede grinned knowingly and said, "Why you must be Kokuyoku."
Dark frowned. "Kokuyoku?" Kagome said astounded. "What's that?"
"It's my true name. I was born in this time." He told Kagome with a half shrug. "I was renamed after I became cursed by another demon."
"Oh. Okay then." Then she became worried about his health. Kaede seemed to have noticed too. "Lady Kaede, can he have the hut on the outskirts of the village?"
Kaede sighed then. "You know the rules. A demon is only allowed in the village if his intentions are good. He must agree to protect the village and do nothing unsound."
"Hear that? No stealing art from the villagers." Kagome ordered.
"Whatever you say, love." Dark stood and stretched. "Lead the way."
~the following day~
Inuyasha on the roof of the hut that stood on the very edge of the village. He'd had one hell of a night and hadn't slept a wink. It didn't help that he just knew that that idiot was shacked up around here somewhere. Koga had fortunately pestered Kagome and then went on his way. He really was a pain in the ass. Inuyasha just couldn't wait to start hunting for the shards again. Two or three more and they'd be done. Then he'd go woop up on Naraku and dally on back to his Kikyo. He'd be leaving Kagome behind but, well she'd be alright.
Just as he was getting up to go squander after everyone and get them ready to leave, someone stirred in the hut beneath him. He snorted. No one slept that late! Fool.
A mesh of bright purple came out of the hut and Inuyasha balked. So he was still here. The hanyou snorted, and instead of picking a fight, he just dawdled off into the forest, angrily contemplating the situation. A vaguely familiar scent caugth the winds and Inuyasha desperately dashed after it without a second thought.
