The burnished red-orange glow of the setting sun illuminated the blue coastal waters into a deep purple glow. The breeze rippled the black tresses of the young woman as she sat upon the beach, gazing beyond the horizon.
'InuYasha,' she thought with sad smile. Yes, InuYasha. The hanyou who had brought so much joy to her life. And so much heart ache. 'I miss you,' she thought sadly, a single tear slipping down her cheek.
It had been nearly two years since time bent once more and she was thrown back into her own, and she thought she missed him as much as she ever had. The gentle waters of the tide slowly slid forward to brush her thighs as she sat miserably. For the thousandth time since they had been ripped apart, she appealed to the sky, "Why? Why did this happen?"
The only sound was the roar of the waves that crashed gently upon the shore as her eyes were soft with memory.
Kagome stood, brushing the sand from her legs and wiping the remaining tears from her eyes. "I need to get back," she murmured tiredly as she turned away from the gently crashing waves and began walking back towards a gently sloping meadow.
She was sadly contemplative as she walked towards the shrine as the sun finally disappeared beyond the horizon and the gentle blue of evening stretched across the sky. Her thoughts flew to the gentle hanyou who disappeared from her life that day.

He had taken her back to the encampment, their eyes communicating to each other the solemn oath of their mutual promise to stay together no matter what. As they sat in the great oak tree, Kagome murmured against his chest, "InuYasha?" "Yeah?" he replied.
"What does this mean?” she said slowly. “How are we going to make this work? I don't know if I can just leave my mom, my family. But I don't want to leave what I have here behind either," she trailed off.
He thought silently for a few moments marveling at the dark curtain of hair that spread across her back, and then spoke. "I guess we'll just try to have it our way...both ways," he said quietly. "But we may not be able to have it that way. We may have to choose. I don't know." The golden eyes peered into her own. "I just don't want you to leave."
A gentle smile illuminated her features at his words. "I don't want to lose you either." He smoothed her black hair and then murmured, "We should go. The others will get up soon." She sighed. "Okay," she said reluctantly with such remorse that he laughed.

She looked up and realized she was close to the shrine. 'InuYasha,' she thought sadly as a sob caught in her throat. She bit down upon her tongue to stem the tears that threatened to flow again.
"Stop crying you fool," she whispered to herself, "Mom will just worry more about you." She dried her eyes and turned the door knob.
"Well there's my girl," Sana Higurashi said as she looked up from the dinner table where she was setting the plates, "I was just about to call you." "Hi Mom," she said her voice curiously bright as she walked through the entry way of the Higurashi home.
"Hey Sis," Souta called his mouth full after tasting some of the beef. "Hmmph," Grandpa muttered in greeting as he was pouring over the bridge scores in the newspaper. "Come sit down, dear," Sana said as she brought the last of the plates from the kitchen. Swallowing down her tears, she sat down and joined her family for dinner.

She stood by the window of her bedroom, the silvery light of the moon against the night clouds casting a bluish light against the room, illuminating her in its cobalt light. A single tear slid down her cheek as she watched the wind whip against the leaves of the ancient tree, and her lip trembled as she tried valiantly to hold it in.
A hand gently touched her shoulder, and she started to flow as she turned slowly to see her mother looking at her with a saddened _expression. Kagome walked into her mothers embrace and the tears flowed as she sobbed bitterly against her mother's breast.
She stroked her daughter's long black hair and murmured, "Its not getting any better is it dear?"
Kagome shook her head weakly against her mother's chest as the tears continued to fall. "The worst part Mama, is not knowing. I don't know what happened to him, his hurt or his pain. All I know is that I'll never see him again," she said brokenly as her mother held her tightly, rocking her side to side.
Sana nodded as her own tears welled within her eyes, as she remembered Kagome's father. "I know," she whispered. Mother and daughter stood there for several moments, drawing comfort from one another. Finally, Sana spoke. "Why don't you stay here tonight darling? Sleep in your own bed?"
Kagome shook her head. "No, I've got work to do Mom," she said softly. The two broke apart and Kagome wiped her eyes. "Okay," Sana said while fanning her face. "Well, you'll stop by tomorrow?"
Kagome nodded as she headed toward the door. They walked down the stairs quietly and then her mother stood by the door as Kagome gathered her purse. "See you tomorrow dear," she said as she gave her one last hug. "Bye Mom," Kagome said and then she was gone.
She walked through her neighborhood until she reached the end of the street where the number 7 bus awaited her. She climbed onto the bus and walked until she found an empty seat. The bus took off and she stared out the window, sitting among a group of people but feeling utterly and completely alone.
The bus stopped at the Shinboku district and Kagome slowly climbed off, her face pensive and her head down, heading to her nice, but tiny dorm that she shared with Ayume, one of her best friends from high school, and after one full month of college courses, she still tried to adjust to her new life.
'At least I'm doing sort of okay in Trig,' she thought glumly, `that's the only thing that is going well in my life.' Her mind immediately flashed back to when InuYasha tried to hide her math book and her throat tightened and restricted. 'Its not fair,' she thought anguished, 'its just not fair.'
Her mind flashed back to their last day together.

Just before they descended the tree, InuYasha lifted her chin with his finger and said seriously, "No matter what, Kagome, no matter how mad you get at me, or how ever much I piss you off, you cant run home and go through the well without me."
She nodded as she slid her hand around the hand cupping her chin. "I wont," she said softly. She moved over so that she could slide onto his back. "If I get mad at you," she said playfully, "I'll just..."
"KAGOME," he warned with dark yet pleading look; any sits she said and they'd both go hurling toward the ground. Her tinkling laughter filled his ears, and even he had to smile. "Okay," he said sounding like his normal self, "ready?" She nodded. "Yep, lets go."
They returned to the encampment just before the others had fully aroused and walked apart, determined not to let them in on their private time. She nudged InuYasha slightly as she spied Sango and Miroku. Miroku lay near Sango's hip, the red imprint of all five of her fingers glowing against his face.
She giggled quietly as he rolled his eyes muttering, "Damn lecherous monk." He separated from her, "I'm going to get us something to eat." She nodded with a smile as she watched him leave, admiring his lean muscular form as he departed.
Kagome went to the sleeping bag, and plopped down beside Shippo. "Kagome," he said sleepily rubbing his eyes. She picked him up and cuddled him. "Did you sleep well," she asked him. He nodded, and snuggled against her as she hunkered down in her sleeping bag against the cool of the morning.
"Kagome," Sango murmured sleepily, looking startled when she realized Miroku slept behind, and then blushed heavily. "Sango," she said with a little smile to herself. She choose to not put any emphasis on Miroku and Sango in light of how she and InuYasha spent their night.
InuYasha returned rather quickly with the scaled fish and threw it on the spit. Miroku sat up and rubbed the still red spot on his face and peered up at Sango, who sniffed and turned her back to him. He sighed sheepishly and then with a secretive grin said low, "It was worth it."
Shippo stretched his little legs and said playfully, "Did you sleep well Kagome?" Her eyes flickered over to InuYasha's who gazed at her longingly. Her eyes returned to Shippo's. "Yes. The best ever."
She put him down on the bag and stood slowly. "I'll be right back," she said, meaning to relieve herself. She began walking toward the woods, noticing with interest the morning pink of the sky when she suddenly felt something sharp hit her stomach.
"Oomph," she moaned softly and she placed her hand there. It hit her again, harder and she whimpered, feeling as if her insides were being wrenched and pulled. "InuYasha," she whispered, as she felt the world before her somehow grow dim and diminish.
His ears flickered and he turned. He heard her. "Kagome," he yelled fearfully as he saw her clutching her stomach painfully. His heart palpitated fearfully as he saw the fear in her eyes, as he saw her appearance diminish as he heard her voice fade away.
Shippo screamed and Sango ran over towards her, Miroku close by her heels. "KAGOME!" they all screamed as they scrambled to reach her. She realized what was happening, and she couldn't breathe she felt so stricken.
She noticed her hand was now opaque as she reached toward InuYasha who was now a few feet in front of her. He reached out desperately to grab her but his hand hit thin air. Tears streamed down her cheek as she whispered "I love you," and faded away.
InuYasha closed his eyes slowly as his hands clenched the tiny fixtures in his hand. All that remained were grains of sand.
