The Not So Happy Couple

His muscles rippled under his tanned skin and sweat glistened on his bare back as he toiled away in the late spring sun. He beat the hammer in a steady rhythm as it hit the nails in to the wood.
Hours later, he stood back to admire his masterpiece He raised a clawed and calloused had to his forehead where his silver bangs were stuck because he had sweated so much. He had to squint his golden eyes to look at it, but he saw it. He gave a satisfactory smile as his ears twitched to a sound coming from behind him. His delicate nose caught the scent of death and graveyard soil before the person even made it within fifty feet of him. The small smile that had once graced his lips vanished as he spoke, sounding somewhat depressed. “Hello Kikyo.”
Kikyo had been in the fields all morning tending to the crops and once she was done, she decided to pay her dear husband a surprise visit because she had missed him. It was a little past noon when she found him putting the finishing touches on their new house. She tried to walk as quietly as she could, but before she even got relatively close, she heard “Hello Kikyo”. She frowned as she walked towards him, slightly discouraged that he had found her out so quickly.
“You really do know how to ruin all the fun don’t you Inu?” said Kikyo with a playful pout.
Inuyasha inwardly cringed at the nickname but answered her with as much forced kindness as he could muster,”Your scent gave you away, I’m a hanyou, remember?” he said without turning to face her, his voice sounding far away and cold.
Kikyo’s pout only deepened at his remark, but vanished instantly when she saw the house. “Oh Inu its beautiful! Now we can raise our family in a proper home!” she squealed as she ran to the house.
Inuyasha sighed when she said “our family”. He didn’t know why she said it because she was dead, unable to have children, barren. But he didn’t voice his complaints because he knew all along this is what he had always wanted, a family to call his own, but along the way things changed and he still wanted a family, just not with Kikyo.
‘If the circumstances were different, it would be Kagome saying those things instead of Kikyo,’ he thought sadly as he sat down to rest. ‘She would have been ecstatic about this house.’
He had been with Kikyo for about six years now and things had been going great, or as good as they could go when you were married to a walking corpse that was your first love. So yeah, things for him were going great.
He thought about the last six years and how empty and lonely he had felt during them. He felt like when he left Kagome, she kept his heart with her, and now he missed it. He missed being able to laugh at things. He missed being able argue with her. He missed the soft scent of sunlight and water lilies that always used to clam him, no matter how mad or distressed he was.
He remembered the day that he decided to tell her he had to go, and it pained him. Over the years he had been away from her, he’d built a dam in his mind to prevent the painful memories of her and his past from haunting him night and day.
Now the dam was breaking and once again he was plagued by the memories he tried so hard to forget. They flooded his mind with a vengeance.
~*~ His feet felt like they were made of lead, but nevertheless, he managed to walk. As he entered the forest, his mind screamed at him to turn back and just go the other way; his heart told him that what he was doing was wrong; his honor told him to march on and accept his fate, and his honor won out.
He trudged through the forest underbrush following the sweet smell or water lilies and sunlight to a small clearing. She sat at the base Goshinboku, staring at some unseen object, her blue eyes filled with sadness and regret. He stopped when he was directly behind, and stared down at the crown of her head.
He knew what he was doing was right, but he felt so wrong. Hoping that she would forgive him after he told her he was leaving her to go with Kikyo was taking advantage of her forgiving and kind nature.
But then again how many times had he taken advantage of her? How many times had he called her names and argued with her? Too many. How many times had he left her to be with Kikyo, knowing that he was hurting her? Too many. How many times had he yelled at her when Kouga came around because he was jealous and didn’t have the courage to tell her how he really felt in fear of her rejection? He could go on and on but the same answer remained; too many.
He was roused from his thoughts when he heard a soft voice.
“Go.”
He looked down at her but she didn’t’ turn around. He wondered if he imagined the voice until he heard it again. He looked down once more to see that she had turned and was looking at him expectantly.
“What?” he asked unsure of what she meant. A lone soul stealer came into the clearing and wound around Inuyasha’s body, urging him to hurry up.
“She’s waiting for you, so go, now,” said Kagome in a cold voice. She had known for weeks that he was planning to leave her. She knew because he would often pull her aside, only to say ‘keh, never mind’ and storm off. She would also find him sitting on a rock or in a tree deep in thought with a scowl on his face. She had been preparing to face the rejection and the pain, but nothing in the world could prepare you for losing your first love.
Inuyasha looked incredulous. “How did you know?” he said his voice dropping in defeat. That fact that she knew already saddened him, but made his decision somewhat easier.
She sighed softly and turned her sorrowful eyes on him. “The signs were there Inuyahsa, all I had to do was piece together the puzzle.”
Inside his heart was slowly breaking, one piece at a time was falling away as she continued to speak.
“It’s ok, there’s no need to make a speech. I’ve accepted the fact that Kikyo holds your honor so I will not object. I’m not going to lie to you, I wish it were otherwise, but what’s done is done and I cannot change it. Kikyo was your fist love and I know that I can never live up to that, she’s everything that I’m not and never will be. She’s pretty, powerful, kind, and she has the one thing that I tried to earn but could never come to possess,” she looked at Inuyasha, eyes shining with tears,”she has your heart.”
Inuyasha looked at her, his own eyes glazed over with unshed tears. How could he have done this? Didn’t she know that he loved her, didn’t she know that if Kikyo didn’t have his promise that he would have been with her as soon as they defeated Naraku? He shook his head, “Kagome, you know that isn’t tr-“
”Inuyasha don’t make up things to make me feel better,” she said as she stood and looked into his eyes. She raised her hand and gently cupped his cheek, using her index finger to brush away the tears that escaped out of the corners of his eyes.
“I know you love her but please.... please just, don’t forget me, and remember,” she placed a feather light kiss on his cheek,”I’ll love you until the last star fades into the night.”
She dropped her hand and left, fading into the forest. He wanted so much to follow her, to tell her how he really felt, but his damned honor prevented him. So he watched her go, silent tears sliding unnoticed down his cheeks, dripping onto the soft earth below.
Inuyasha sank to his knees and dug his claws into the ground, his entire being overridden with grief and regret. He threw back his head and let loose a long, pain filled howl that was heard for miles. A howl that sliced through the night, tearing at the hearts of all who heard it.
When he stopped, his body was shaking with silent sobs. ‘She’s gone.’ he thought as more hot tears fell from his face. ‘She’s gone.’~*~
Kikyo popped her head out of the door and said, “Inu aren’t you going to come inside and look with me?”
He reluctantly rose from his spot on the ground and trudged toward the house. Kikyo, satisfied that he was coming, disappeared back inside. A malicious grin crept onto her pretty features as she let her mind wander. She knew that Inuyasha loved Kagome and not her, but, she would soon change that at the end of the next lunar cycle.
‘Soon, Inuyasha, soon you’ll forget all about my reincarnation. By the end of the next lunar cycle, you’ll be mine, forever,’ she thought as she waited for Inuyasha to catch up to her.

He sat there in the middle of the room, various scrolls and documents scattered around him like leaves blown by the wind. His pitch black hair cascaded down his back, covering a fading spider shaped scar. His crimson eyes rimmed with dark circles, circled the room once before returning to the scroll that was in front of him. After the last battle with Inuyasha and his accursed friends, he decided to move to China, temporarily of course, to regain his strength and look for some clue as to what was happening to him. In the last few months, he had felt the demons that had once devoured his soul slowly being forced out of his body. It seemed that every day more and more demons would leave. He also felt Onigumo’s presence in his soul slowly fading away.
‘It’s that damn miko’s fault,’ thought Naraku as he tossed another scroll aside. ‘Her purification arrow is the cause of all of my problems. She’s been a thorn in my side before she was even born, even as Kikyo she’s always managed to upset my plans.’
It made sense that since the demons once inside him were leaving, that his demonic powers and abilities would disappear also. But alas, that was not the case. Instead of his powers weakening they were becoming stronger. His eyesight was sharpening, his sense of smell was heightened, and his strength was increasing.
He had been searching for something, anything, that might hint as to what was happening to him, but he had not been successful so far. A sudden grin came onto his face as he was struck with a thought. ‘If it was that miko whose caused then surely she can tell me how.’

“Oh Kagome-sama you look beutiful, this kimono suits you perfectly!” exclaimed a girl by the name of Kayami. Since her meeting with Hitomi-chan, the man that gave her this job, she had been trying on different kimonos in one of the numerous rooms in the bath house.Kayami was her assistant and had been throwing numerous kimonos in various colors at her until she found one that she liked. It was a royal blue that faded into lighter shades and had silver sakura blossoms that wound around the sleeves, and also wound up from the bottom to the top. The matching obi was a dark blue with silver trim and was tied in a complicated butterfly bow.
Her hair was pulled up into an intricate design, while a couple stands that were left down to frame her face were braided with silver string. On her eyes was a touch of blue eye powder and on her lips was a light pink lip paint. When Kayami was done, she looked like a tenshi that had been brought down to earth to grace the world with her beauty.
Kayami had just come back into the room and told her to follow her. She was led back up into the main room where Hitomi was waiting with her belongs in his hand.
“We are leaving. Here are your things meet me in the carriage when you are ready,”a and with that he walked out of the door.
Kagome didn’t like his straight forwardness. “Hitomi-chan! Where are we going and why so soon?” asked Kagome as she hurried to catch up.
Without turning to face her he replied, “We are going to the west, more precisely, we are going to Lord Sesshomaru of the Western Land’s domain.”
Kagome visibly paled despite the white face paint. “Why are we going there? I thought Lord Kaname resided in the East?” she said, her voice shaking slightly.
“ He does, but all the lords, lower lords, and other respected persons are reporting to Lord Sesshomaru’s castle because in one week, it is the start of the annual Summer’s Eve Festival.” and he stepped into the carriage, leaving a very shocked and slightly scared Kagome.
‘The last person I want to see is Sesshomaru,’ thought Kagome as she climbed into the carriage. The driver whipped the reins and they were off to the West where a cold blooded taiyoukai lived. The same cold blooded taiyoukai that had tried to kill her on many occasions.
‘Just wonderful,’thought Kagome as she slouched in her seat.

“So I trust everything is going as planned?”“Hai it is. The two are going to meet in a matter of days but the hanyou and the dead priestess might pose a problem. The hanyou is still in love with her and the dead priestess is planning something that could harm her.”
“Ah yes, that could pose a problem, but her brother will see to everything.”
“But she does not know who her real brother or any of her family is, how will he help if she thinks she hates him?”
“That is where you come in, Midoriko-sama. I trust you to see that they are well informed but do not reveal too much to the girl.”
“Why not?”
“Her heart, mind, and soul are on a tedious edge right now; the wrong influences could send her tumbling into the void and she will never to be able to complete her destiny. But the one to heal her will be revealed soon.”
“But you know everything, couldn’t you just prevent these things from happening?”
“If I were to do that then the balance in the universe would be thrown off and chaos would consume us all. Now go and see to it that she remains safe.”
“Yes Hateshi-sama.”
