Chapter Three
Her Assignment
____________________________________________________________ __________________

Deep in the darkest corners of Hell, were four souls, each with their own story of hate and despair. Each of which had come close to destroying the world; but all were stopped by a certain hanyou. All of which, except one.

The particular soul in question was not stopped by the hanyou, but by two spirits. He was an ancient elemental demon by the name of Yokoshima. He was as old as the world, give or take a few years. This ancient demon harbored a time old hatred for light and all creatures born from it. He also hated darkness, though it was this element he was born of himself.

Another of the five souls was a moth demon, Menomaru, who was cast here by the half demon Inuyasha and the cursed miko Kagome, whose purifying arrow pierced his skin like white-hot fire. Even now, without a physical body, he still felt the pain, and it angered him to no end. One day he would find a way out of this accursed pit full of flames and get his revenge.

Princess Kaguya didn’t want to rule the world, she just wanted to destroy it, but she was stopped at the last moment by the mere half demon and his little bitch. She remembered that day and she wondered what went wrong. Her powers surely surpassed those of a hanyou, yet she had lost. She had been humiliated to no end and she wanted to make them suffer for her discomfort. She would find a way back to the realm of the living and pick up where she left off, and this time she would not be stopped.

Though this soul was not a being of flesh, it still had some basic emotions - rage, lust, pride- and it longed to once again know the satisfaction of killing something. It had once come close to reaching its ultimate goal of opening the gates to Hell, but was stopped by two inu youkai. Because he was created of Hell itself, it was not really trapped there but waiting. Waiting for the opportunity to once again wreak havoc and revenge against those that put it in this weakened state. Sounga would turn the world into a living Hell, no matter the cost.

Little did they know that the hatred they felt toward the same people created a bond between them- a bond that was fed by the unconditional hate they felt- and soon the bond would become strong enough to restore their powers and they would once again reign supreme. All they had to do was wait.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
He was once again seated behind his massive mahogany desk in his personal study, contemplating what had transpired on the couple of days. ‘In a mere week, I am supposed to have all the preparations for the Summer’s Eve Festival done. Damn Kaname, it was his responsibility to tell me that I was supposed to be hosting months ago, and he just now shows up to inform me?!’ Sesshomaru slammed his fist down on his desk, creating a small dent on the smooth surface.

A knock came at the door. Sesshomaru gave a small growl of annoyance before telling whoever it was to come in. The doors swung aside to reveal Hytora, his closest friend and most trusted advisor. His glare softened, but it wasn’t noticeable to anyone that didn’t know him and how to read his actions.

Hytora bowed his head in respect before he spoke, “It has been noticed that a carriage approaches the caste at alarmingly fast speeds and no one knows who is inside or what the purpose of it is.”

Sesshomaru took on a thoughtful look before responding. He had a good feeling he already knew who was behind it. “Send for Lord Kaname and tell him to come see me, now.”

“Yes milord,” said Hytora as he left out of the doors.

‘How dare he invite people to my house without this Sesshomaru’s permission. He will pay for his ignorance,’ he thought as he heard the soft sound of footsteps.

Lord Kaname didn’t even bother to knock; he just barged in. Lord Kaname was extremely pissed because he had been interrupted while meeting with one of the prettier servants, and had been rudely interrupted. So yes, he was extremely pissed.

He pushed the doors open and stomped into the room, clothing in disarray, face flushed, and a death glare plastered on his face. If they had been in an old cartoon, Lord Kaname would have steam blowing out of his ears right now.

He walked up to his desk and pounded his fists on it like a rouge gorilla, leaving even bigger dents than Sesshomaru had before. He growled at Sesshomaru before he spoke

“What,” he bit out, “may I ask, is so important that I had to be here right now?”

“What,” said Sesshomaru, his smirk growing bigger by the second,” may I ask is a carriage that I did not send for doing outside my gates?” He knew what the lord had been doing and couldn’t be anything but amused that he was privileged enough to interrupt it.

Now it was Lord Kaname’s turn to grin like a Cheshire cat, enhancing his already felonious features. His bright green eyes were sparkling with mischief. “Oh I forgot to mention that I sent for my new geisha, she is the one that is in the carriage.” he said in almost a purred. “Sorry if I inconvenienced you.” he said as he stalked out of his study his tail swishing behind him.

When the doors shut with a quiet click, Sesshomaru let out a barely audible sigh. He was just about to lean back into his chair when Hytora came into his study, again. ‘How many times must this Sesshomaru be interrupted today?’

“I’m sorry to interrupt you again, milord, but the carriage has arrived at the front gates. Shall I tell the guards to turn it away?”

“No. The carriage was sent by Lord Kaname and is therefor permitted onto the grounds. I will be out there shortly to greet the new guest.” said Sesshomaru. He gave a curt nod to dismiss Hytora. Hytora left without making a sound.

Sesshomaru stood and made his way down to the front gate to see this geisha that Lord Kaname hired. He supposed she must be somewhat talented if she was the geisha of a lord so he was somewhat eager to see who it was.

Sesshomaru stepped out in the pale sun of the late spring morning and made his way toward the carriage in the middle of the pathway leading to the house. He stopped a few paces away and took a small sniff of the air.

Although many scents permeated the air, only one stood out like a neon sign. The scent of sun kissed water lilies wrapped its soft tendrils around him, encasing him in its exotic aroma. He breathed a little deeper, wanting to drown in the intoxicating smell. He shifted his eyes so that they rested o the carriage, the root from which the scent was coming from. When the door to the carriage opened Sessshomaru, the Sesshomaru- the cold, emotionless taiyoukai of the west- dropped his jaw in shock.

~*~*~*~

The carriage ride had been unnaturally short, and Kagome was lightly saddened at this fact. She had been preparing on how to meet Sesshomaru, and the short ride didn’t offer her the amount of time she wanted.

When the carriage came to an abrupt halt, she groaned as she stretched her neglected muscles. Hitomi got out of the carriage first and told her to stay inside until he said to come out.

She heard voices and, much to Kagome’s relief, none of them sounded like Seshomaru’s. Moments later Hitomi came back and held out his hand to led her out of the carriage. She carefully maneuvered around the thick folds of her kimono and managed to step out of the cramped carriage in a graceful manner.

Kagome squinted her eyes to adjust to the light, and once they refocused she looked around. She was in the most beautiful courtyard she had ever seen. Lush green grass grew everywhere except for a pathway that led to the house. In the middle of the courtyard was a huge-at least twenty feet tall-fountain of a huge two tailed inu standing on a cliff, water coming from his open mouth.

Around the courtyard there were jade statues of different inu youkai in different poses and sizes. Kagome guessed these to be Seshomaru’s ancestors, because even as statues, they all had a regal air about them. Around the statues grew an assortment of flowers that even her human nose could tell smelled wonderful.

She shifted her gaze towards the people, or demons, standing a few paces away in front of her and froze. There in the pale spring sun with his mouth agape, was Sesshomaru, and he was staring at her.

‘Oh Kami why did he have to be here?’ she asked herself in despair. Then she thought about it and figured out the answer. ‘He is the Lord of the Western Lands and he has a guest, its his duty to greet them and see them inside’ said a little voice inside her head that she guessed to be her self conscience.

Once she recovered from the shock of seeing him, Kagome straightened herself and tried to act the part she had been given to play. She held her head high and looked at him, daring him to say something demeaning or rude.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Hitomi bowed low and began to speak. “I have looked high and low for a woman that is skilled in the fields of music, literature, art, combat, and languages. On top of all these requirements, the woman had to be exceptionally beautiful,” he Siad casting Kagome a sideways glance,” and I am happy to report that such a woman has been found. Not only does she meet the expectations, she is a miko of high praise.” he steeped aside to give the small audience a full view of her. There was a collective amounts of gasps heard from the guards, and some even whistled.

“May I present Lady Kagome, miko, and Lord Kaname’s new geisha.” said Hitomi as he took Kagome’s elbow and lead her towards Sesshomaru.

When they came to stop in front of him, Sesshomaru had already closed his mouth and was just staring at Kagome, his eyes and face once again unreadable. She bowed to him and he bowed back, carefully watching her to see how she would react to him.

Much to his surprise, she handled herself very gracefully and in a regal manner. ‘Maybe she has changed since I have last seen her. She has gone from being an insufferable female ningen to carrying herself as though she was royalty,’ he mused to himself. He stopped his train of thoughts because he had to speak.

“This Sesshomaru welcomes you, Lady Kagome, to the House of the Moon, or the palace of the Western Lands. While you are here my home is open to you and you may feel at home here. During your stay, I hope you find your accommodations satisfactory, and if not, this Sesshomaru will see to it that you are as comfortable as possible.” he said facing her.

Kagome was impressed that he was acting so, so.... hospitable. She thought that he would have turned her away at first sight because she was human, but he was welcoming her into his home.

“Arigato Lord Sesshomaru for opening your home to me. I hope I can be of service to you if need be,” said Kagome bowing slightly.

Without a word Sesshomaru offered his elbow to her, and she hesitantly took it. Before she could register what she had done, Sesshomaru was leading her toward the palace. She cast a backwards glance only to find that Hitomi had left. She sighed and kept walking, hoping that once this was all over, she could have a normal life.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Because Sesshomaru was walking so fast, she couldn’t get a good look at the palace, but from what she did see, it was beautiful. When he finally came to a stop, they were in front of a huge set of double doors that were intricately carved and painted into a beautiful koi pond scene with water lilies and a waterfall.

Seshomaru pushed to doors open to reveal a vast room that was lavishly decorated. Sesshomaru lead her in closing the doors behind him, pleased at the look on her face.

The room’s walls were painted a royal purple with silver stars scattered about on it. The floor was covered in a black rug that went around the entire expanse of the room. On the right were two doors, one that lead to a closet the size of her whole downstairs at home, the other that was still closed. On the wall in front of her were a row of huge windows with a door on the left side that lead to a balcony outside.

But what captured her attention the most was the bed. The luxurious queen sized bed that was just calling for her to jump on it until she passed out, but she stifled the urge, knowing that she would further embarrass herself by doings so.

It was covered in sheets that matched the color of the walls, complete even with silvers stars that shone in the sunlight that filtered through the windows. It looked like an over sized futon, but had the appearance of on four poster bed with a canopy of black and purple curtains that were draped over it.

Tons of pillows in various shades of black and purple were heaped on the bed. She noticed that in the middle of the bedspread and on some of the pillows was a silver crescent moon, the mark of Sesshomaru’s linage and royalty.

Finally, her resolve broke and she squealed as she ran to the bed and flopped down on it, giggling as she did so. Sesshomaru was not surprised because he was waiting for something like this to happen and he just started to chuckle.

When his baritone chuckle filled the room, resounding off the walls, Kagome froze and looked at him, shock evident on her over expressive face. Her eyes were as wide as saucers and her eyebrows had long since disappeared within her hairline. She opened her mouth to say something, but no sound came out, so all in all, she had taken on the appearance of a fish out of water.

At this look, Sesshomaru’s chuckle escalated into a full force laugh, that vibrated in Kagome’s ears. It was deep an melodic, like the sound of a bass drum, and she thought he should laugh more often.

Once Sesshomaru’s laugh died down to a series of low chuckles he looked at her, and realized what he had just done. ‘I’ve just shown emotion and to a human no less! I’ve let centuries of training and restraint go to waste on one human girl’ thought Sesshomaru.
‘One pretty human girl might I add’ chirped his self conscience.
‘She is not pretty, even by human standards’
thought Sesshomaru, mentally rolling his eyes.
‘You’re right she’s not pretty,’ said his conscience in defeat,’ she down right gorgeous!’
Sesshomaru mentally groaned.’No she is not and this Sesshomaru doesn’t understand why you keep trying to tell me that I think otherwise.’
‘If you don’t remember, I am you and you do think she’s pretty. That’s why you were staring at her when she stepped out of the carriage. She is more beautiful than any demoness you’ve ever seen and you know it’
mocked his conscience.
Sesshomaru sighed in defeat because he knew what his other self was telling him was true. She was extraordinarily beautiful even by demon standards. When he had first seen her standing by his brother’s side in his father’s tomb, he had thought it to be true. When she had stood up to him even when he could have killed her, he was captivated by her icy blue pools swirling with determination, and fear. He had to admit that she had courage and that was rare in females of his time.

Even today as she stepped out of the carriage, he had been amazed by how much she had grown and filled out, but her eyes no longer held their fiery spirit. Thought the were still the captivating blue pools as he remembered them to be, they seemed almost.....dead.

~*~ She stepped out of the carriage, illuminated by sunlight, causing her to glow. She wore a dark blue kimono that slowly faded into lighter shades that contrasted nicely with her alabaster skin and midnight tresses. The silver secure blossoms that wrapped around her kimono looked real and seemed to really be blowing across the fabric.

She wore her hair in an intricate design that had silver thread woven into it. The loops and locks, along with the silver thread, seemed to melt into one another in a never ending cycle. Her cherry lips were tinted pin and her blues were enhanced with blue eye powder. All of this just seemed to enhance her celestial beauty.
~*~

Yep, that proves it’ said his self conscience.
Sesshomaru just sighed and looked up to find that Kagome had been staring at him. A faint, barely noticeable flush graced his cheeks just like when he was a child. He quickly turned around and started for the door, not wanting to face Kagome even though he didn’t know why.

~*~*~*~

Kagome watched as Sesshomaru went from scowling, to emotionless, to indignant, and then what she thought was embarrassment. As she was staring at him she couldn’t help but notice how perfect he looked in the sunlight.

His pale skin seemed to glow with power. His hair looked like liquid silver that spilled over his broad shoulders in smooth waves, and his eyes burned with an inner fire that was strong and bright. The dark blue crescent moon on his forehead and magenta slashes on his high cheek bones made him seem exotic and untouchable, which was true.

While staring at him her subconscious decided that plaguing her with images of a very naked Sesshomaru would be fun. She shook her head to clear it of the impure thoughts, but she couldn’t help to miss them, just a little.

She was startled when Sesshomaru stood abruptly, throwing directions at her from over his shoulder.

“Meet me in my study in one hours time. There are things that I would like to discuss with you,”he said in his normal monotone voice as he shut the doors behind him.

Kagome sat there on the luxurious bed, confused as ever. ‘I know he has an aloof personality and all, but that was just plain weird’ thought Kagome as she got up to get her belongings from her bag that Sesshomaru had unceremoniously dropped on the floor when he left. Just as she was going to put her stuff in the over sized armoire, she her a soft knock at her door. Wondering who it could be she told whoever it was to come in.

When the door opened, Kagome nearly dropped her things. Stepping into her room was the second hottest guy on earth besides Sesshomaru. A tan skinned neko youkai with sparkling green eyes and the most charming smile she’d ever seen.

His waist length black hair was braided loosely and hung over his shoulder. On his cheeks were three green stipes and on his forehead was a green fang and a black flame, symbols of his high status. H wore a green and black haori, similar to Sesshomaru’s, except for his had his crest on it instead of sakura blossoms. A green, black, and silver sash was tied around his waist and he wore plain black hakama.

He looked at her and she almost melted right there on the spot. This effect was doubled when he spoke.

“Ah Lady Kagome, a pleasure to meet you. I am Lord Kaname of the Eastern Lands, your employer. I believe Hitomi-chan explained to you briefly what was expected?” he asked in a smooth, deep voice like Sesshomaru’s, except full of emotion.

Kagome was still too shocked to speak, so she just nodded.

“Well I see Hitomi made an excellent choice, I will have to thank when I see him again.” Kaname smiled, showing off his pointed canines. “You were hired to become my geisha for the Summer’s Eve Festival. You will be here for one month and will be given various assignments throughout it,” he said as he advanced toward her, a devilish smile on his face.

Kagome saw the look on his face and it made her heart race, sending heat to her nether regions. She suddenly became light-headed and almost fainted when he hooked his finger under her chin and lifted her face to his. They were so close Kagome could feel his hot breath caress her face like a warm breeze.

“Meet me in my personal chambers tomorrow evening,” he said in a husky whisper,” there I will give you further instruction as to what I expect of you.”

With that he took her hand and placed a light kiss on her knuckles, adn left, leaving her stunned beyond breathing. She watched him go, then turned and looked out of the window. She gasped, it was nearly noon and she was supposed to be meeting Sesshomaru. She dashed out of the room to his study, relying totally upon memory from when she was last here.

~*~*~*~

Sesshomaru sat in his study, where he seemed to be spending a lot of his time now, waiting for Kagome to show up. She was already ten minutes late and he didn’t have a lot of patience to begin with. He was just about to send a servant to fetch her when she came running into his study, out of breath, face flushed, clothes in disarray, much like Lord Kaname had been when he had come in.

‘This is just how Kaname looked after I......no....she couldn’t........she wouldn’t.....’ thought Sesshomaru as his mind raced with the possibilities. He took a sniff of the air and smelled her arousal, his eyes flashed red ‘maybe she did... but with who?! His mind conjured up the possibilities, but the one that kept coming back to him was one of Kagome and Kaname, because his scent was on her as well.

Once Kagome regained her breath and fixed her clothing and hair, she cleared her throat to get his attention. It worked and he looked at her as though she had killed somebody.

She fidgeted with the hem of her kimono nervously but spoke anyway. “Ohayo Sesshomaru-sama, I am sorry that I’m late.”

He glared at her,”Why are you late?” he asked he voice dropping to a dangerously low tone.

“I was talking with Lord Kaname about the duties I am to preform for him while I stay here. He asked me to come to his personal chambers tomorrow evening so he can further instruct me as to what he wants me to do for him,” replied Kagome avoiding eye contact.

Sesshomaru wanted to hunt Kaname down and castrate him for implying such things to such an innocent and pure creature. Of course, because Kagome was so innocent, she was completely unaware of Kaname’s intentions. ‘Damn her purity and innocence, if she wasn’t so innocent then she wouldn’t get herself into these situations’ thought Sesshomaru as he calmed his raging blood.

When he thought that he could speak to her without yelling at her for being so damn oblivious, he took a deep breath and said, ”This Sesshomaru wants to know what has happened since I left after Naraku was defeated, and don’t leave anything out.”

She stiffened and was about to argue, but thought the better of it. ‘He deserves to know the truth. After all, I am under his roof, and so I have to abide by his rules’ she thought as she took a deep breath and began her tale of sorrow, death, and abandonment. Kagome only hoped she could get through it without crying.
