Chapter Six:
Who Invited You?
************************************ *************************************************************************** *************************************************************************** ************************************************
It was the first day of the Summer’s Eve Festival and that morning had gone better than Sesshomaru had expected. Some of his guests had started arriving a little past noon and now that evening had come, his house was filled with the Lords and lower lords.
His good friend the Lord of the Southern lands, Kokuoshima, had already arrived with his mate Mizu. All of his guests had arrived by the time the sun had set except for one, he was still waiting on the Lord of the Northen Lands.
He sat at the head of the table in the meeting hall, his cold eyes scanning the room for something, anything, that could relieve his boredom. Sesshomaru could not remember the last time his boredom had been at large like now, but he was glad he didn’t.
He looked to the left where a gang of demonesses were staring at him and giggling. He sighed at their naiveness, refraining from rolling his eyes. He nearly laughed when one of them had the audacity to growl seductively at him, wiggling her claws in a suggestive manner.
This was one of those times that he actually wished Kagome was here for nothing was ever boring when she was around. Her childish antics and quick temper always proved to amuse him, no matter how cold he was at the time.
‘If there was ever a time I needed you, miko, it would be now.’ thought Sesshomaru as he tried to fight the headache pooling right behind his eyes.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
She sat as a hawk demon servant named Shinozu fussed over her. At the crack of dawn she came in and woke Kagome up. She then lead her into the bathroom and washed her hair for her. Afterwards she put a robe on her and sat her in front of the vanity by the window while she began to apply make up and other such things. Now that she had put her hair up in a beautiful design and threaded it with sakura blossoms and purple ribbons she scurried to the closet and rummaged through the various kimonos inside. After a couple huffs and groans, Shinozu reemerged from the closet, carrying an indigo bundle.
She let it unfold to reveal the most beautiful kimono she had ever seen. It was a light indigo that darkened to a deeper indigo, and eventually to black as it neared the bottom. The yukata she wore under neath was a beautiful silver color that sparkled in the sunset.
On the kimono were various curved lines that lead to the center of the back of the kimono where a single white water lily was placed, embroidered with silver thread. The curved lines were ripples that came from the water lily as if it were in a pond.
Above the lily was a lone silver crescent moon, the symbol of the Western Lands, symbol that she was under Sesshomaru’s rule and protection. Shinozu carefully put the kimono on as if it would break at the slightest mishandling.
When she tied the matching silver obi in an beautiful bow, she gently nudged Kagome towards the mirror so she could look at herself. In everyone else’s eye she would have looked beautiful, but to herself she did not.
She did not deserve such a priceless kimono such as this one and she knew it. She stepped closer to the mirror and gasped, her eyes had went from their normal icy blue to a vibrant indigo that matched the kimono she wore, her lips were red as blood, and her skin seemed pale as moonlight, even though Shinozu hadn’t applied face paint.
“I cannot accept this, it is simply too elegant and fine for someone of my stature.” said Kagome casting her gaze to the floor.
Shinozu looked bewildered and a bit afraid. “Lord Sesshomaru specifically told me to give you this kimono, if you don’ accept it, he will be furious,” said Shinozu, her eyes wild with fear and nervousness.
Kagome shook her head, “If I must, but as soon as tonight is over, I’ll be returning it whether he likes it or not.”
“That kimono is a special gift from my lord, I’m sure he will be pleased to see you in it.” said Shinozu as she left, leaving Kagome feeling miserable.
‘Well I don’t feel like arguing and Sesshomaru must’ve really wanted me to wear it so I guess it wont hurt, but it’s still just too fine for me. This is just so confusing.’ thought Kagome as she left the room to go to the gardens where she could mull the recent events over in her mind.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
He sat in a carriage with his wife, pondering why he was still with her. He also wondered why he had been invited to the Western palace for some festival that his asshole of a brother was hosting. The invitation had arrived yesterday and he had almost torn it up when Kikyo had handed it to him.Of course, Kikyo had immediately wanted to go, but he had adamantly refused. But then he thought about how she had gone and gotten an new soul just to please him, so in the end his guilt overtook him and he reluctantly agreed.
He had known how Kikyo had come to be alive again, he had followed her every time she had left mysteriously in the middle of the night. Deep in his heart, he was utterly disgusted at what she did, but he didn’t let it show, for her sake.
So now he was on his way to his brother’s palace for some stuffy festival full of stuffy people that he was going tot be stuck at for a whole damn month. He was jostled from his thoughts when the carriage came to an abrupt halt and his head slammed into the wall.
“We’re here,” said Kikyo as she bounced out of the carriage. Inuyasha slowly followed and stepped out into the courtyard. He grabbed Kikyo’s elbow and roughly dragged her to the main house, not even bothering to take in the scenery because he knew this place like the back of his hand.
Inuyasha figured that as soon as he got to the meeting hall, where he knew Sesshomaru was gathering his guests, the sooner he could talk to the pretty boy about why he asked him here in the first place.
He burst through the doors with Kikyo dragging behind him, slightly out of breath.
“SESSHOMARU! What the hell is your problem invitin’ me here?!” yelled Inuyasha across to the other side of the room where Sesshomaru sat, microscopically happy that someone had saved him from his own boredom.
He was on the brink of resorting to conversing with people, something he rarely, no, never did except when absolutely necessary. But this relief was short lived when the thought struck him that Inuyasha was here at his palace, at his festival, without his invitation.
“I assure you, little brother, that I did not invite you here. So before you further embarrass yourself, leave and you will not have to suffer the consequences,”said Sesshomaru as stared at him, his eyes boring holes into Inuyasha.
Inuyasha wasn’t the least bit surprised at his response. “Then why did I get one of these invitations yesterday if you didn’t invite me?” he asked smirking when Sesshomaru’s eyes widened a fraction.
He was about to reply when the doors burst open again only this time to reveal Lord Kaname dressed in an elegant black and silver kimono with Amari at his side wearing a rather plain looking green kimono, or it was plain from Sesshomaru’s point of view.
“Good evening ladies and lords and may I say that I am most pleased to be here this evening. I must thank Lord Sesshomaru for showing me the utmost hospitality,”he said, tossing a smirk in Sesshomaru’s direction,” but it is my pleasure to introduce to someone very special to me.”
Everyone in the hall seemed to lean in to hear whose name he was going to announce. Everyone knew that Lord Kaname was known for entertainment and at the last festival he had introduced a wonderful girl that he had made his personal geisha. They wondered if that was the case this year as well.
Lord Kaname glanced around the room at the eager faces that looked at him with anticipation. “It is my honor to introduce....”
~*~*~*~
She was being rushed down the hall by Shinozu who was mumbling about her wandering off without telling anybody where she was going. She stopped when they reached the doors to the meeting hall.“Now when they announce your name, the doors will open and you shall walk in.” said Shinozu hurriedly.”and remember that you are going tot be in the presence of royalty, so make sure you carry yourself gracefully and strongly.”
Kagome just nodded and watched Shinozu walk away. She turned to the door and waited, anticipation rising in her stomach in the form of butterflies.
~*~*~*~
“.... Lady Kagome, my new geisha,” finished Lord Kaname as the doors slowly opened to reveal a very gorgeous Kagome.‘Remember, carry yourself strongly and gracefully. Strongly and gracefully. I can do this.... I hope.’ thought Kagome as she gracefully glided over to where Lord Kaname stood and took her place by his side. She bowed and spoke,”Arigato Lord Kaname it is my honor to be serving under such a great and powerful lord. I am truly in your debt for offering me such an elite position.”
Sesshomaru almost snorted at the facade they were putting on. He knew that KAgome didn’t like serving somebody- it just wasn’t in her spirit- and she hadn’t taken this job by choice. She was obviously honor bound to this job and Kaname had to have some kind of control over her for her to be so submissive.
The crowd had gone into an eerie silence as the pair walked up to the table and sat down on Sesshomaru’s right side. Many of the women looked on with jealousy and the men just stared and ogled at Kagome.
Inuyasha, who had been watching the whole event in udder boredom, froze at the mention of Kagome’s name. He turned to see if it was really her, and was met with an unfamiliar woman. She was the striking image of Kagome, but her eyes were a dazzling indigo. He sniffed and sure enough, it was the scent of sun kissed water lilies that he remembered and loved.
He knew right away that this woman was his Kagome. He made a move to go to her, but stopped dead in his tracks when he saw her stand by another man’s side. Something inside of him broke and he was overwhelmed by sorrow and regret.
‘So, she has moved on, though it doesn’t surprise me. It’s not like she isn’t entitled to her own life and she can love whoever she wants, I don’t even deserve to be able to gaze upon her let alone to receive her love or forgiveness.’ he thought as he stood there and looked on at the show. The pair walked to the table side by side, arms intertwined, fingers laced.
Once they sat down, Sesshomaru stood and looked at the crowd. “It is my honor to welcome you all to my palace. As you know we are gathered here for the annual Summer’s Eve Festival which is held in honor of youth, music, and the mating season,” he said, his face blank.
“In the next month, there will be festivities and other forms of entertainment to suit your needs. For now my servants will show you to your respective rooms and tomorrow the festival will officially begin.” he said as he left the room.
On his way out he motioned for Inuyasha to follow him. Inuyasha excused himself from Kikyo’s company and bounded after his brother. He lead him away from the hall to what Inuyasha remembered as his study.
Once inside, Sesshomaru sat down behind his desk and just glared daggers at Inuyasha, not at all happy with his presence here.
“What do you want with me Sesshomaru?” asked Inuyasha as he flopped down on a nearby chair, boredom plain on his boyish features.
Sesshomaru laced his fingers under his chin and replied,”I want nothing of you except for you to leave. This festival is for invited persons only, and since I did not invite you the you are not required to stay,” said Sesshomaru as he closed his eyes to fight back his impending rage.
“Well, this letter says that I was invited so I ain’t goin anywhere.”
“This Sesshomaru is not fond of repeating himself. You and your clay doll are not welcome in my home so leave, at once.”
“Don’t you dare bring Kikyo into this and besides she isn’t dead anymore. She alive as the day she was born,” said Inuyasha proudly, but gagging on the inside.
“She is not but I couldn’t expect a half demon such as yourself to realize that. In order for one such as your pot to be truly alive after their soul has already been reincarnated, they must retrieve their soul from the one who presently holds it. I know for a fact that Kagome still holds most of your miko’s soul. I also know that your miko had to resort to dark magic in order to obtain the soul that she has now,” said Sesshomaru as a malicious smirk appeared on his face.
Inuyasha looked take aback by his words and couldn’t find the words to reply with.
“I really can’t figure out why you even brought her here, she smells atrocious. I’m surprised that her smell alone hasn’t killed you yet.”
“Just ‘cause she doesn’t smell like a field of flowers doesn’t make her any less beautiful,” retorted Inuyasha.
Sesshomaru chuckled and said,”Inu youkai are very sensitive to smell. If I had a mate that smelled like that, I’d probably faint. But I suppose that there is some hope for you, maybe you’ll find somebody more worthy if there is such a woman out there.”
“Whaddya mean ‘maybe you’ll find somebody more worthy’ Kikyo is the woman I love and I plan to spend the ret of my life with her!” exclaimed Inuyasha as he stood, anger getting the better of him.
“Well if you do plan on spending the rest of your life with her, then why have you not marked her?” said Sesshomaru, his gaze hardening.
Inuyasha seemed to freeze when the question reached his ears. It echoed through his head, mocking him. Sesshomaru was right, why hadn’t he marked her? He supposedly loved her right, then why hadn’t he marked her yet?
‘I don’t love her. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with her, I never have. Even when I though I loved her, back when she was alive, I wasn’t sure if she was the one I truly loved, truly wanted to be with.’ he thought.
“Because,” he mumbled,”I don’t love her.”
Sesshomaru was surprised at his brother’s confession, but it didn’t matter. “Stay away from Kagome, Inuyasha,” said Sesshomaru, his voice taking on a dangerous quality.
“And why should I?!”
In mere moments, Sesshomaru was inches away from Inuyasha glaring at him with hate filled eyes. “You have caused her enough suffering and sorrow, and I will not tolerate you harassing her while in my home,” he growled, unconsciously cracking his knuckles.
‘Why would he care about Kagome, she is human after all.’ “I’ll do what I damn well please and you can’t stop me. You don’t even know what happened between me and Kagome so just lay off!”
“I know much more than you give me credit for little brother. The evidence of how you hurt her is standing down in the meeting hall as we speak. She told me everything that happened since Naraku was defeated and I must say, you are even more dishonorable than Naraku himself.”
Sesshomaru grabbed Inuyasha by the neck and whispered,”Kagome is mine now, so don’t interfere. You have what you wanted so if you come anywhere near her, I’ll make sure that you suffer what she has tenfold.”
With that he threw him against the wall and left.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
She lay under the silk covers in a dreamless sleep as he crept towards her room. He relied upon his nose to lead him to her. Even if she didn’t want to see him, he just wanted to apologize for everything he had put her through. He came to her room and silently opened the doors. He tiptoed to her bed and crawled up beside her, reveling in how her scent enveloped him. He brushed a few stray strands of hair from her face and then cupped her cheek.
She sat bolt upright and looked around wildly, sleep still in her violet eyes. She lifted her hand to the one that rested on her cheek and followed the familiar red clad arm up to the body. She gasped when her eyes fell upon the familiar gold ones she used to love.
Tears welled up at the corners of her eyes as she pulled his hand away.
“Kagome, its been a while.” said Inuyasha as he let his hand lay limply on her thigh.
“It has, hasn’t it? I’ve missed you terribly,” said Kagome, playing with the edge of her blanket.
Inuyasha’s heart soared at her words. ‘Maybe I still have a chance.’ “I’ve missed you too Kagome. You don’t know how long I’ve wanted to see you again, to touch you, to have you in my arms,” whispered Inuyasha as he pulled Kagome into his arms, placing a kiss on the crown of her head.
Kagome didn’t resist for she had wanted this for so long, but now it felt wrong. So she just sat there in his loving embrace, face blank, just like her heart.
“Kagome, why did you leave? I came looking for you the day after and you disappeared, even Kaede didn’t know where you were. I waited for you to return but you never did.” he whispered into her hair.
Kagome jerked away from him. ‘How dare he ask me why I left! It was his fault in the first place.’ “You know why I left, you caused it! The village, the forest, the well; it all reminded me of what I’d lost! First fate took away my sister, brother and son; then it took away my only love,” she was sobbing by now,” and now it gives me back something that I could never and can’t ever have!”
“I used to think fate was cruel by toying with me; giving me things just to whisk them away without warning. It teases me every day, knowing that I can’t do anything to stop its twisted game. I thought that I could determine my own destiny by my actions, but Fate’s beat me to it. Fate decides everything before anyone even knows about it. So in reality, we’re all just pawns in life; we’re all just slaves to Fate.” she said as she clenched her fists in the covers.
Inuyasha just stared at her, his eyes burning with tears at what he caused. It was his fault. He made her this way. He broke her. He extinguished the light that was Kagome. And he hated himself for it. But he did not want to give up.
“Kagome, I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you..... I love you,” he said in a voice that only she could hear.
Kagome’s rage was slowly consuming her. She pushed hima away “LIES! It’s all lies! You never loved me, that’s why you came here with Kikyo! If you loved me then you wouldn’t have left me alone. If you loved me then we would be living just outside the old village in a house of our own, maybe with children running around. If you loved me, then you wouldn’t have crushed my heart.” she said as she began to float.
A red sphere of energy formed around her as she was lifted off the bed. It crackled and gave off angry vibes that were almost tangible. The once transparent sphere was now opaque, completely obscuring Kagome from Inuyasha’s view.
The ball of energy that Kagome was in grew bigger and suddenly it shot a bolt of energy at Inuyasha. He dodged it but where he once stood was now a smoldering spot. This continued, and Inuyasha kept dodging, knocking over furniture and other things in the process. The noise woke up almost everyone in the west wing of the palace, including Sesshomaru.
He bolted upright in bed, sensing a large and powerful aura in the room next to his. He quickly dressed in a robe and bolted down the hall to his mother’s room. He opened the doors to reveal a disaster.
A giant ball of red energy floated above the bed and Inuyasha was hiding behind an armoire as bolts of energy were being shot in random directions. Kagome was nowhere in sight, so Sesshomaru assumed that she was inside the sphere.
~*~*~*~
Pain. White hot pain. The kind of pain that sliced through your body, burning you wherever it touched. It tore through Kagome, shutting everything out except the pain itself. It blinded her and set her afire. Her fingertips, back, eyes, mouth, ears, and forehead burned with more intensity than the rest of her body. She could hear the blood roar in her ears as the pain intensified. She let out a scream as it reached an all time high. The sphere she was in glowed bright, blinding all those who were outside it.
The shine died down to a mere shimmer as the sphere descended back down to the bed. Sesshomaru and Inuyasha watched in horror as the sphere rested on the bed and disappeared, dropping a mass onto the covers.
Once he thought it safe enough, Inuyasha cautiously walked over to the bed and looked at who or what lay there. He let out a gasp at the sight. Laying on the bed was Kagome, except she wasn’t Kagome.
The Kagome that lay on the bed had hair the color of blood and skin the color of moonlight. Under the blood red bangs were three signs; a red sun, a black star, and a silver crescent moon, all intertwined with each other.
On her cheeks were threes slashes; one black one between two red ones. Her eyes which were now the same color of her hair with a fringe of black and sliver around the pupil. A fringe of thick black lashes surrounded her eyes while perfectly sculpted eyebrows ached above. Since she was lying on her side her hair fell to reveal an elegantly pointed ear.
Her fingertips, instead of the blunt human nails she once had, now donned sharp black claws that reflected the moonlight that shone through the windows. Wrapped around her slim waist was a sleek black tail that trailed down to her feet.
She suddenly sat straight up and looked around. When she spotted Inuyasha, she gave a cry and a red barrier shot up, throwing Inuyasha across the room and slamming him into the wall. Sesshomaru would have smiled, or smirked in his case, but given the circumstances he just looked away.
He let his gaze wander to Kagome who was inside a barrier, clutching her chest and rocking back and forth. Even through the barrier he could smell the salty scent of her tears, and he was angered by it. Obviously Inuyasha had upset her again and he would be punished for it later, but right now Kagome was more important.
‘Hold on Kagome, do not die. Hold on until I can get to you, then everything will be alright.’ thought Seshomaru as he stepped towards the barrier. At first the barrier repelled him and the purifying energy pricked at his skin, but as he went on the feeling died down.
He was about a foot from the barrier when he stopped to see if the barrier would let him through. He stuck his hand out to the barrier and touched it. It wavered a bit but molded around his hand and let it pass. He slowly stepped through the barrier and wen to the bed.
He picked up her shaking form and cradled it in his embrace. She looked up at him with tear glazed eyes that spoke volumes of her pain. He hugged her tighter and whispered calming words. “Kagome, calm down, I’m here now, it’s alright. Nothing will harm you now, just please stop crying.” said Sesshomaru as he rocked her back and forth.
It had to have been the only time in his life that Sesshomaru truly let his mask fall to reveal his true emotions to anybody. His face at that moment was full of concern and an unidentifiable emotion that almost overpowered the others. His eyes were glazed but no tears fell.
Kagome looked up to see golden eyes staring down at her, shining with unshed tears. At first she thought it was Inuyasha and her aura flared, but she refocused her gaze to see the familiar crescent moon and magenta slashes, and calmed down.
“S-s-sesshom-maru?” she croaked as a tremor shook her body. “What are you doing here?”
“Shhhh. Kagome ave your breath, you’re safe now.” breathed Sesshomaru as he tightened his grip even more.
“What happened to me, and why does my body burn allover?” she asked weakly as she reached up to cup his cheek.
“Kagome you must rest, you’ve exhausted yourself,” whispered Sesshomaru as he rested his chin upon her shoulder.
“Sesshomaru,” said Kagome as she strained to sit up,” I need to ask you something.”
“What is it?” he asked, trying to hide his anticipation.
“You need to get me as far away from here as possible, now.”
“But why?”
“There’s something inside of me that’s been awakened, it’s hard to explain but whatever it is it’s dangerous and I don’t want to hurt anyone here,” she said as another tremor came, this time strong enough that even Sesshomaru felt it.
“I will, but yo must promise me something.” She nodded her head. “Promise me that you’ll make it through this and come back to me,” he said his eyes pleading.
She managed a weak smile and said, “I promise, now let us go.”
He formed his demonic cloud under his feet and flew out of the balcony door that had been blasted off previously and into the night, headed for a place unknown.
As the cool night air whipped his silver hair along with Kagome’s red hair, he thought about what his life would be like without her. He inwardly shuddered at the thoughts. No he did not want to linger on the thought any longer, for it in itself was a horror.
