Chapter Fourteen
Explanations

He sat at his desk in his very well furnished office, impatiently tapping his concealed claws against the mahogany surface. He listened as heels clicked down the hallway, nearing his office at a fast pace. He heard the excited breathing and could almost smell the happiness rolling off whoever it was that came to a stop outside his door.

The hurried knock came and he muttered for them to come in. The door opened to give him a glimpse of the crisp hallway that glowed an unearthly white, hurting his sensitive eyes. His view was quickly blocked by a person dressed in a tight, white skirt that barely reached mid thigh. Her tight fit top did nothing to hide her curves and the white lab coat that adorned her shoulders hugged her body and draped down where it swirled around her knees.

How a coat that loose ‘hugged’ anything was beyond him, but he didn’t really care. Her white hair was swept up into a high ponytail that stopped near the small of her back. Her naturally white eyes greatly contrasted her deeply tanned, but unmarred skin. Her silver earrings that hung from pointed ears twinkled in the dim light of the office as she bowed in respect.

“You have something important to report I assume, Minari?” he asked in a bored tone, not in the best of moods at the moment.

“Hai sir, the QP- 27917 have made a breakthrough that has completed Project T. They are now working on putting it into action. If they are successful then phase one will be complete,” said Minari as she fingered the customized white and silver automatic at her hip, fingers playing over the trigger.

Yokoshima’s eyes glittered at this news. The completion of Project T would mean that he would have complete control over the present day Japanese military and all of its weapons. As soon as he had assembled his current company, he had made an offer to the military that they would be completely idiotic to ignore.

He had promised them the development of weapons that would dominate replace the ones they currently had. The humans immediately agreed, grabbing the chance at more power. They had given him a month to get it ready and he had met their expectations.

Now all he had to do was mass produce it and start the takeover. That bastard of a sword would be happy at the news and would leave him alone for the time being.

“They request that you come see the weapons in action Yokoshima-sama,” said Minari.

“Very well. Let us go.”

~*~*~*~*~

He sat in the outside amphitheater as a woman on stage sang while those around her acted and such, his thoughts on one person and one person alone. She haunted his thoughts day and night, leaving no room in his mind for anything else.

His mind kept drifting back to when they were laying in his bed together. How her body seemed to be made for his, how her curves melded into his chest and stomach. Her new appearance and scent only made her more desirable.

At first, he was disgusted at the thought that he was so infatuated over a human female and a miko at that, but soon he got over it and let his obsession take hold. He thought about the consequences of taking a human mate, but paid them no attention. He was a lord, any who objected would meet their untimely end whether they liked it or not.

He wondered if he loved her, and at first he laughed at himself for thinking it, but it soon became clear that what he felt for her was more than physical lust. Every time he saw her his heart became warm and his stomach filled with annoying butterflies. Of course these things didn’t show, he was a lord he had a reputation to uphold, but he felt them nonetheless.

‘She will be mine, that much is established, but will she come to me willingly?’ He chuckled at the thought. ‘It doesn’t matter in the end, now does it?’ He thought as he was brought out of his thoughts by applause. He quickly stood up and mad his way to the gardens, wanting to think of a plan to get her to come to him without having to use force.

His tail swished with him as he walked, deep in thought, mind set on one person. Kagome. Lord Kaname wasn’t a person that easily gave up and Kagome would be his.
~*~*~*~*~

They were walking through the gardens, currently stopping on a bridge that passed over a koi pond. They both stopped to look at the colorful fish glide effortlessly through the clear, cool water that glistened in the morning light. The taller one sighed as she looked at the smaller one.

“Kagome-chan, why are you here?” she asked innocently as she fidgeted with her kimono. The last time Kagome had seen Rin, she was just nearing eight years old, but now that six years had passed, she was now in her early teens and no longer the little girl that she had grown to think of as her daughter.

“I have a job here with Lord Kaname of the Eastern Lands. I’m his new geisha. I’m here for the festival,” she said as she began walking off the bridge toward the bench that was situated beside the pond amongst some lush lilies that smelled even more wonderful due to her enhanced sense of smell.

“Oh, do you like it here? Are you going to stay here after the festival is over and live with me and Sesshomaru-sama?” she asked again, hope shining in her eyes.

Kagome giggled. No matter how old she got, Rin would always be the eight-year-old girl she was at heart. “I don’t know Rin-chan, I don’t think Sesshomaru-sama would approve. Besides, I have to help people all around the land.”

Rin looked deflated but she quickly pasted a bright smile on her face, though it didn’t reach her eyes. When Kagome had been with Rin while she was sick, she had grown very attached and she thought of her as the mother she never had. She was eternally grateful to her when she saved her from the oni during Sounga’s siege.

Though she had only been here a few days, Kagome had already made a huge impression on the palace. The eastern, southern, and western lords had already taken a liking to her, especially the eastern and western lords. The northern lord had yet to make an official appearance so she did not know whether he like Kagome or not, but Rin thought it would be impossible to not like Kagome.

They were now sitting on the bench, gazing at the pond, listening to the soothing sound of the small series of cascades that fed it, both content to stay there forever. While Rin was thinking of a way to try to convince Kagome to stay, Kagome was thinking about what Inuyasha told her.

It brought tears to her eyes and Rin immediately questioned her as to what was wrong. “Oh it’s nothing Rin, really. I’m just a little tired that’s all,” she said. “Why don’t you go inside and attend one of the plays that are being performed,” she asked politely yet urgently.

Sensing the distress coming off her, Rin left her in peace without questions. She knew that something was wrong and that Kagome wanted to be alone. Once Rin had gone, Kagome dropped to her knees beside the pond and started to silently cry.
*>*<*>*<*>*<* “I don’t want to hear it Inuyasha, I just don’t want to hear it!” she said as she tried to break away from his grasp. She managed to get away too, but Inuyasha being more experienced with his youkai abilities, grabbed her once again and pulled her down into his lap.

“Dammit Kagome I want you to listen to me!” he said harshly while wrapping his arms around her waist. “Will you fucking sit still? You promised me an hour and dammit I’m gonna get my hour!”

Kagome only squirmed more. “That was before you mentioned all you wanted me for was to sell me your pathetic little sob story. I don’t need your excuses, I’ve heard them all! Now if you don’t let go of me within the next three seconds, I’ll sit you so hard that by the time I’m done, you’ll have your own valley named after you!” she snarled, baring her fangs and growling at him.

Despite his anger and hers, Inuyasha couldn’t ignore the pressure and the brushing of Kagome’s bottom against his manhood. He mentally moaned at the fact that they weren’t mated because if they were, he would have taken her right now. These thoughts only made him even more aroused and tempted his resolve and control.

“Kagome, please stop moving,” he whispered,”if you keep it up, I might not be able to control myself and you may lose something very dear to you.” Something about the seriousness of his voice made her freeze and relax, just a bit.

It was then that she sniffed the air and smelled the heady scent of his arousal, and felt the hardness that was pressed firmly against her bottom. She growled,”Just wonderful Inuyasha, just wonderful. It’s just like you to get all aroused when it’s a serious moment.
I swear, all you men are the same.”

Inuyasha decided to ignore this statement and shifted her so that he was comfortable, too bad the same couldn’t be said for Kagome. “Now will you just listen?”

She sighed,”If I have to.”

“You probably think that I left you because I felt that Kikyo was better than you. You probably think that I didn’t want you because you were just Kikyo’s reincarnation and that when I looked at you, I only saw her,” he whispered as he nuzzled her hair.

She just sat there stiff s a log. “You’re dam right that’s what I think.”

“Well you’re wrong. You’re wrong Kagome and I’m going to prove it.”

“How are you going to do that? How can you disprove six years worth of pain and lies, huh? How can you have anything to say that will make up for how you treated me? There isn’t a thing or a word in the world that can possibly ease the suffering and put my heart back together,” she said coldly.
Inuyasha sighed. He knew she was right. “But that can’t stop me from trying.” he turned her around and held her face close to his, his claw stroking her cheeks. His golden eyes burned into her silver and ruby ones, trying to send her a message so that he wouldn’t have to say it.

But she stubbornly avoided his gaze, averting her eyes downward. “When I look at you, I don’t see Kikyo, I see Kagome. I see the foolish girl that unpinned me from an eternal sleep. I see the smart, beautiful, brave woman that I learned to trust. I see the miko that befriended a lowly hanyou and hopefully grew to love him,” he murmured as he hugged her tightly to his chest.

“When I look at you, I see my happiness and love.”

Kagome refused to listen to him. She couldn’t listen to him, not now, not after all these years of isolation and pain. “Love. What could you possibly know about love. Love is when two people care about each other and support each other. Love is a connection, no, a bond that two people share that can’t be broken by anything. It’s when one person cares about the other so much that they would do anything to be with them and protect them from harm,” she said hollowly.

She laughed a bitter, hollow laugh that echoed off the walls of the medium sized dressing room. It vibrated in Inuyasha’s ears and made them flatten against his head. Once she finally stopped she said,”But what do I know about love? What connection or bonds have I ever shared with someone? What fool would care about me and protect me from anything, sacrifice anything just to be with me?”

“I’m the fool! I’m the fool that would do all those things for you, don’t you know that?!” he asked desperate to get her to understand.
‘That sounded better in my head.’ thought Inuyasha.

“Kagome just shrugged away,” No, I don’t know that and you didn’t do anything to try and show me either.”

He turned her back around. “Well I’m gonna start now,” he said as he gently brought his lips to hers. Kagome was surprised, but she didn’t kiss back. Inuyasha began to nip and lick her bottom lip, begging for entrance. Kagome allowed it only because he had bit her hard enough to make her lip bleed.

He took this as an opportunity to invade her mouth with his tongue, sweeping his tongue over every inch of her sweet, hot cavern. He tried to coax her tongue to dance with his but she just remained unresponsive. He pulled away and stared into her eyes, looking for any signs of his old Kagome.

Though they sparkled like rubies surrounded by a dazzling silver rim, they held no signs of the love he had desired and wished to return for so long. “Kagome, did you feel anything just now?” he asked sadly.

She looked at him and saw the sadness and pain etched on his face and couldn’t help but feel guilty, but she couldn’t do this anymore. “Honestly, Inuyasha, I felt everything. I felt like I’ve wanted to feel ever since I met you. I felt loved and cared for, and that someone wanted for me to be happy for once,” she admitted.

Inuyasha smiled and released a much needed breath,”but I can’t be with you.” Inuyasha’s smile fled and was replaced by a confused scowl. “Why the hell not?!”

“You have Kikyo now and you’ve made it painfully clear over the years that you’ didn’t love me. Besides Kikyo deserves you more than I ever did, hell you’re basically promised to her.” she said hotly.

“Will you cut that bullshit! You act like we were betrothed when we aren’t,” he yelled.

Kagome shot him an icy glare. “You’re the one who married her! You’re the one who would leave me whenever she called for you, scampering to her like a lost puppy who had found its owner. Correct me if I’m wrong, but what about all those times you said and I quote,”Kikyo was much more beautiful. If Kikyo was here we would have been done a long time ago. You’re not Kikyo, she looked intelligent and pretty.” oh and this was my personal favorite,”why can’t you just be more like Kikyo.” she all but yelled.

“So don’t even talk to me about bullshit, Inuyasha, don’t you dare!”

“Did you honestly fucking believe me when I said those things?! It amazes me how fuckin stupid you can be, wench?!” he yelled, chuckling sarcastically.

“If I didn’t believe them then would we even be in this situation?” she growled.

Inuyasha was losing his already microscopically thin patience. “You wanna know why I said those things? You wanna know why a I had to treat you like a piece of shit? Because Kikyo would have killed you!” he growled. By this time he had her pinned down on the futon, pressed flush against each other.

Kagome was shocked to say the least. Kikyo had tried to kill her a couple times but she didn’t know it was a part of her daily routine.

“She would have killed you if I had showed nay signs of affection toward you. You don’t know how many times she told me about her elaborate plans ro murder you,” he whispered as his eyes glazed over. “You don’t know how many times she would tell me how much she hated you and wished that you were dead.” A single tear slipped from the corner of his eye and landed on her cheek.

“You don’t know how many times she’s asked me to kill you myself,” he said in a choked whisper,”I had to protect you. I couldn’t, no, I wouldn’t let the only woman I’ve ever truly loved be killed because of me.”

Kagome was on the verge of a colossal emotional breakdown. What he just told her went against everything he had said and done ever since they met. The reasonable side of Kagome said that he was telling the truth because he had never lied to her before so why would he start now?

But then again, he said that all those mean things he had said to her weren’t true, so he had lied. It was too confusing for her to think about, caused too much stress on her mind and heart, so she just decided to let unconsciousness claim her.

Kagome went limp in Inuyasha’s arms, her body no longer willing to support its own weight, her mind and heart to broken and confused to try to decipher his words and the meanings behind them. Inuyasha looked down to see that Kagome wasn’t moving, or breathing for that matter.

He frantically called her name and shook her, but she refused to move or give any indication to her condition. Her pulled her into his lap once again and rested his head on the top of hers and let the tears come. The tears of regret and pain and sorrow. Tears that he hadn’t shed since he was a pup.

They slid down his face and onto her hair, creating a damp spot. He felt terrible beyond belief and was so wrapped up in Kagome that he didn’t notice the quite closing of the shoji screen or the growl that went with it. He didn’t smell the anger, hurt and betrayal, didn’t dense the sudden flare in the aura as it quickly disappeared down the hallway.

He just held her there and after a while fell asleep out of fatigue and emotional stress. >*<*>*<*>*<

Kagome wiped the tears away from her face, a bitter smile on her lips. She had asked herself how much damage he could possibly do in an hour and now she knew. ‘More than he can in a week.’ She quietly made her way to the northern rose gardens where she usually went to relax.

As she neared the gardens, she smelled sweat and another scent that she couldn’t identify. She walked into her usual secluded clearing and nearly threw up. She gave a muffled squeak and ran from them. She ran until she reached her room. She threw herself onto the plush bed and buried herself under the covers.

She cried until her tears ducts got tired of producing the drops and just quit. Kagome hiccupped and got up, going over to the mirror. Her eyes were twice as swollen and her cheeks were tear stained. Her nose was raw and pink from rubbing it so much.

She gazed upon herself a little longer before something inside her clicked. She sat up straighter and fixed her rumpled kimono. She was tired of running away. Running away from the pain and the truth. She was tired of crying. Tired of crying over things she couldn’t control.

She wouldn’t be weak anymore, not for anyone. She thought about how love had gotten her into this mess and snorted. ‘Well this is going to be an easy problem to fix. In theory, if love causes me pain, then not loving will make it go away.’
