Chapter X: The Death March
Inuyasha stared before him, at the child with vacant eyes. Between delicate hands she held a mirror, which oddly reflected nothing… Inuyasha gave a skeptical look at the seemingly harmless image, and he debated inside himself whether to turn and run or further inspect this intriguing creature.
Though every inch of him insisted he run, his body thought quite differently as he hesitantly stepped forward. Step by step drew him closer to the still immobile girl. Not once did she blink or even acknowledge his presence. Not until he was face to face with the mirror did something happen… A bright flash caused Inuyasha to jump backward in surprise, covering his eyes in pain momentarily, before a steady growling caught him by surprise.
He opened his eyes warily, spinning around behind him to search for wherever the growl was coming from… He couldn't find it, and it wasn't until he looked forward that his question to the location of where the growl came from was properly answered…
Before him, inside the mirror, blood red eyes with turquoise irises leered at him like a predator watches its prey… elongated fangs gnashed out at him, deadly claws scratching at the inside of its prison. Inuyasha gaped, stepping backward. In his shock, he tripped over his own feet and landed on his backside. His breathing was shallow, but he stamped on his fear harshly…
…From experience… he knew... if they knew you were afraid… it only made things worse…
But that… monster… before him, imprisoned in the mirror, was so familiar and so deadly…
The bloodlust he saw in those eyes caused a cold shiver to run down his spine…
A faint voice caught his attention, and his eyes whipped up to the small child who addressed him, “…let it consume you… your mortal soul… whose true form is ruled by your dark heart…”
Inuyasha stared blankly, letting the words register and consume him slowly… It was him. The monster… was him.
That's not me…
Inuyasha scrambled back a bit, staring upon that face in horrified denial. His need to remain unafraid overrode his senses, and the impression of fight or flight crossed his instincts… feeling particularly cornered, unable to run… he fought it. He fought the shaky truth of his connection to the creature that was desperate to rip him to shreds.
“That's not me…”
“…your mortal soul… whose true form is ruled by your dark heart…” the child repeated to him softly… no undercurrent laid toward the static of her voice… all it was that she presented was monotone, a cold harsh reality that could not change.
And Inuyasha couldn't quell the rage inside of him.
“NO! THAT'S NOT ME!”
He rushed at her, winding his eyes tightly shut as he slammed his fist blindly at the mirror. It cracked, shattered, and the pieces of himself ran back into his bloodstream like little shards of his heart…
When he opened his eyes again, he was shaking and sweaty. Curious golden hues peered down at him in concerned interest and he lashed out. “GET AWAY FROM ME! THAT'S NOT ME!”
Sesshomaru's jaw connected with Inuyasha's fist, and he quickly grabbed his little brother's wrist before he could further damage either one of them.
“Inuyasha! Inuyasha, damn it, stop it! It's Sesshomaru! It's me, little brother!” The flailing died down a bit at the sound of his voice, and Inuyasha calmed down a bit. A look of terror still captured his features, his eyes wide like an endangered rabbit… He was shaking, trembling… Blood trailed down the knuckles of his right hand…
But what Sesshomaru above all could not ignore… were the tears that silently ran down his half brother's cheeks…

“Damn, Yasha, you look like absolute shit today…,” Miroku looked up at his friend who glared down at him, growling softly as he threw down the tray of food next to his brother… They were brothers through a blood oath both had taken the last year of junior high… The same year I left Kagome…
Inuyasha shook his head. Miroku had known of Kagome, but had never met Kagome… and Inuyasha somewhat intended to keep it that way… Though his insides cringed with guilt at the thought of hiding something from his friend… But his mind reasoned, that for the reasons why he was associating with Kagome again it was best that Miroku was left out of it.
“Shut it, Miro. I'm not in the mood today,” Inuyasha hissed angrily, not bothering to even look at his blood brother. But Miroku obviously wasn't going to let up so easily… as usual… “You're never in the mood, according to you Yasha. Yet you always let up eventually.”
“That's because that's the only way you'll shut you fucking mouth!” Inuyasha seethed, glaring at his friend in a way he hoped would get through to Miroku as to just drop it…
But unfortunately, he never got the message.
“Ah… what must it be? Young love? A broken heart?” Miroku teased relentlessly. Inuyasha growled, his fingernails raking against the table.
Usually, Inuyasha thought of himself as pretty laid back… but Miroku had this irritating habit of being able to push Inuyasha's buttons, and was rather good at it. Not only that, it seemed to be a habit of his.
“Drop it.” He verbalized his annoyance, rather loud and clear. Miroku took this as a hint that he was on the right track, though he couldn't be further from the truth even if he tried.
Miroku sighed dreamily, somewhat sarcastically, as he put his hands together in a feint of swooning, “Ah! Cupid's arrow had hit valiant and true! Who is she? Is she a perfect lotus with creamy skin and ebony locks, silky and beautiful and perfect to the touch? Pert breasts, narrow waist, thick hips…” Inuyasha reached over and thumped Miroku, causing the young man to fall from his seat.
“So violent! Must be pure!”
Inuyasha stood up in aggravation, completely ignoring the fact he had food before him, and yelled out loud, “I'm not some ecchi hentai like you, Miroku! Just because you're a perverted lecher does NOT mean those around you focus solely on that head, you idiot!” Inuyasha immediately stormed off, leaving his best friend on the floor.
Miroku just smiled.
“Young love indeed.”

“Gods, you look like hell.” Kagome reached tentatively over, pulling the bottom of his eye down to check the whites of his eye. She had some medical training, only Gods knew from where, but her gentle touch caused his skin to burn in ways that made him uneasy.
Shrugging her away, Inuyasha turned to his locker. “I'm all right. Besides, you're not the only one who's pointed out how crappy I look today.”
Kagome put her hands knowingly on her hips, and stared right through him. He felt her watch him, but he refused to turn his gaze towards her knowing she could see right into his soul as if his eyes were windows.
She was the only one who could get through to him like that, and it made him uncomfortable.
She moved to push the lock of hair away from his face and he flinched at her touch.
“You're lying. You're not all right.” Once again, he flinched… this time, at her words.
When he didn't respond, and instead shoved a book roughly into his bag, she took that as a confirmation.
“Don't lie to me Inuyasha. You had a dream, didn't you?”
Inuyasha paused at her words for only a fraction of a second, before he began to shove items into his book bag again.
“Didn't you?”
Sighing heavily, Inuyasha turned to look at her for the first time during their entire conversation, slamming his locker shut.
“Yes. I did. Happy now?” Inuyasha asked sourly, and began to turn away from her. That response… the admittance… it left a bitter taste in his mouth. Kagome grabbed his arm lightly, just as a way to grab his attention.
“Don't walk away from me, Inuyasha.”
He turned his eyes towards her slowly, watching that intense gaze that was so filled with concern and worry… concern, when she herself should be worrying only…
For herself…
Inuyasha felt that stabbing guilt rise up in him again… I left her alone… to deal with this… how could she worry about me when she has these problems herself…?
Along with the nagging feeling that washed over him, he rinsed it down with a shot of self-loathing. And it burned just as bad.
“I'll do whatever I please, wench!” He yanked his arm away from her hand roughly, but she just took what he said with a grain of salt and waited patiently. He was wavering under her, cracking under that silent understanding that passed between them. And he didn't pull away when he found her embracing him in the hall of the school, wide open to where any could see.
But he didn't care… he just didn't care if people saw him with `Crazy Higurashi'. That invisible girl no one knew of… No one cared to try and understand.
Instead, he wrapped his arms around her smaller frame, pulling her up tight against his body, burying his nose into her hair. He inhaled her scent, and it caused his twitching muscles to finally relax. He felt her bury her face gently into his t-shirt, nuzzling into his shoulder. Sighing contentedly, he leaned against the wall.
Kagome gently lifted her head, locking her eyes with his once more… this time, he met her gaze head on… and was amazed at the amount of warmth that laid behind them.
“I'm spending the night tonight.”
Inuyasha felt a small smirk tugging at the corners of his lips… he knew the answer to his next question before he even asked. “Does your mother know?”
“Nope.”
Inuyasha nodded slightly, staring down at her, “All right.”
Kagome's lips upturned in the slightest bits… so imperceptible, if he had not been watching her so closely Inuyasha was sure he would have missed it.
Her lips formed the smallest pout as if to hide the amusement dancing in her eyes, and Inuyasha felt a small tingle run up his spine. Gently he lowered his head, capturing that ghost of a smile with his lips in the most chaste, most electrifying kiss Inuyasha had had in all his teenage years.
He felt himself blush in a way that would match Kagome's slight tinge, as he released her from his arms quickly and gave her a short wave while running backwards away from her towards the exit of the hallway. “Later, Kagome! We're late already!”
Kagome returned the gesture in a half-daze, as she numbly spun around and walked in to her classroom to only greet a scowl from her chemistry teacher with a dazzling smile.
A/n: When I read over it… it seems like a giant hazy dream, the way everything moves… isn't that odd? Is it odd I noticed that? Even though it's somewhat hard to follow, I don't feel inclined to change it one bit. Oi, I'm aggravating. It seems to move too quickly for me as well, but it works like a dream… like I said… a least, a dream I have. I need to sleep now, speaking of which.
Sayonara.
