Chapter XII: Our Mistaken Identity

Kagome snapped her eyes open. Where am I?! All she could register was she wasn't in Inuyasha's arms… and she couldn't move from the spot she was in. Kagome pushed against something, something… that felt like… restraints?!

Kagome found she also couldn't speak, for some strange reason. Hot tears of confusion stung the corners of her eyes, and she again pushed against what she figured were in fact restraints. Trying her best not to panic, Kagome attempted to look around and found she was greeted by darkness… Darkness that was palpable, and whole… The kind of darkness that was so thick you could taste it. She could not even see the bridge of her own nose.

Kagome tried to quell the flutter in her chest as her heart skipped a beat. It was spreading through her like a disease, and she couldn't choke down the feeling of sickness that caused alarm within her. Warning bells were going off, and this time… she knew she was in real trouble.

“INUYASHA!” She screamed out. He had found her before… he had… he had brought her out of this, saved her. He could find her again. She cocked her head slightly, straining the best she could to listen. Nothingness returned her desperate call… Nothing could save her this time. She knew it… but she had to keep trying.

INUYASHA!” She cried out again, her voice breaking. She was still, frozen. Hope within her was dying, for she could feel the direness of the situation setting in. Her breaths became labored with horror as she began to hear footsteps near her.

A small light suddenly filled the room, and her eyes dilated, and she shut them as an explosion of white light occurred behind her eyes. Kagome quivered slightly as what felt like talons traced along her cheek, and she felt no urge to open her eyes again… perhaps if she denied, it would be only a dream again and she would wake…

Unfortunately, for as real as all her dreams were, nothing quite held a candle to this.

“Now, now… don't you wish to open your eyes so you can see the masterpiece I have made of this?” The deep tenor of the voice, the silkiness was hauntingly familiar. Fear froze her muscles in place. She had already placed the face, she just never knew… never guessed he could…. Would…

But she was compelled, opening her eyes to capture his blood crimson ones. Wavy tresses framed his body, and a hypocritical smile played upon his amused lips. “Kagome.”

Bile rose in her throat, and she felt her eyebrows draw together in denial.

“I told you that you belonged to me, didn't I? Tch, but it appears you haven't been listening well, have you?”

Kagome ripped her eyes away… to look anywhere but his deceiving face. His mocking tone, those sadistic features that took pleasure in her internal torment.
But as she did, a horrified cry escaped her lips….

Dismembered bodies hung around her, half torsos… limbs, legs, heads… all incomplete. Creatures she wouldn't even dare think she could recognize, the most familiar being vaguely humanoid… the most familiar being the demon that stood in front of her.

The demon that went on despite the fact she had just realized what lay beyond him as if it were only part of the décor.

“You see, you have been mingling with that half-breed and that just won't do, will it?” Kagome tore her eyes away from the… massacre…. to look at him with question.

But he didn't supply an answer. He just grabbed her chin roughly, smiling malevolently, as he tugged at the ties of his hakama pants.

“You always had the most searing blue eyes, did you not know that?” Kagome didn't bother to answer as he climbed on top of her pushed her legs open roughly. She watched him with unblinking, disbelieving eyes as he appeared to examine her nude core. He grinned to himself, as if he was pleased and rubbed his own shaft at the sight of her. He climbed over her roughly, ignoring her comfort and positioned his head at her opening. When he did, he tore through her like it was nothing.

Kagome hollered out to Inuyasha in pain, shoving against the restrains as her eyes snapped shut.

She made a silent agreement to herself that she'd rather drown out everything in darkness than ever have to see anything before her again.

“What? Kagome, is this not much fun?” She felt him speak next to her ear as he pounded her, digging his claws in to her hips as he pushed her against the horribly cold metal table… why hadn't she noticed how cold it was before? Had the shock been too bad, or was it so bad now that it was grasping any other source of information to keep sane? Was it really cold or was she loosing her mind? And why was she debating the level of sanity she had based on the temperature of a table?

And why did that all make some horrible sort of sense?

“Hm, you don't seem very talkative, do you?” she felt him slide a claw down her stomach, burning pain reaching her numbing mind. She absent-mindedly noted a warm sensation of liquid seeping within her, rolling down her hips and again coming from her abdomen.

…Then…. across with his hand he went.

And perhaps he was digging… inside of her somewhere… somehow… her mind was going dull… she couldn't explain…

And through the haze… she could have sworn he took two things that should have been so very important from her she might have given her life for it… if only she could remember what that was supposed to be…

But that darkness… she so wished for, surrounded her… and brought her some measure of peace, reminding her of where she wanted to be…

Inuyasha…

~~~*~~~
Inuyasha whipped up, panic seizing his chest as he looked about wildly. Sweat dripped down his brow as he looked down. Kagome appeared to be sleeping, and rather peacefully at that, but the alarm in his chest wouldn't take that as an answer. He gripped her shoulders, and hesitantly began to shake her the slightest bit. But when she didn't even stir in response, he increased the harshness until he could hear her teeth rattling in her head.
She laid there like she was dead…
Absolute dread gripped him as he lowered his shaking body down to listen to her breathe… lowering until he heard her heart beat in her chest…
And that was the only proof he had that she was in fact alive.
So, Inuyasha sat up, drawing her body close to his. He pulled her protectively in to his arms, and let the sense of failure overwhelm his mind. There he sat, for hours on end until the break of dawn brought her agonized storm hues back to him. He felt a rush of her arms being thrown around him as she cried.
She didn't even have to explain what happened. He knew.
He knew he had failed to protect his Kagome, and there was no way he could take it back. But somewhere, deep inside, his soul clenched in a painful suspicion that whatever had happened was not the first, nor the last time it had occurred… and that sometime very soon it would be happening again.
And among all of it, there was a very deep secret that laid in the reason why there was such persistence in the actions that was destroying his world…
Breathing deeply, he inhaled her scent as Kagome cried in his arms, shaking like a small child. He just… couldn't hold it against her. He couldn't find any reason why… any person would want to harm the perfect creature someone had given the good graces to put in his embrace.
Looking across the room, Inuyasha stared at his reflection that mocked him with gold eyes. It wasn't just a flash… it lingered there.
And he understood.
He made a silent promise to himself, that even if he did fail her… the bastard who did this to her he would rip through and make him eat his own innards before he ever considered touching Kagome ever again.
