InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Sleep Paralysis ❯ That I Had Lost ( Chapter 13 )

[ X - Adult: No readers under 18. Contains Graphic Adult Themes/Extreme violence. ]

A/n: Sorry about the graphic stuff. But it did serve its purpose, I swear… but it isn't going to get too much better kiddies, so if you wanna back out, back out now… even if I do want to keep you, if you'd prefer to read waffy go read it. I know sometimes I prefer that too, believe it or not.

Anyway, thank you to Silent Beauty… for your continuous reviews. I see that reviews have been slacking, and somehow I think it's because the story is going downhill, but that's probably me just being dumb. I can't expect people to enjoy such a sad story. Who could? But thank you so much, Silent Beauty, for your continual support.

You have no idea how much a few seemingly meaningless words can encourage me.

Chapter XIII: That I Had Lost

Inuyasha and Kagome both shared equally lame looks at their friends' antics. Sango had smacked Miroku, who fell over with a look of pure bliss as she shrieked out a dignified, “HENTAI!”

During lunch, both had treaded lightly on the discussion of Inuyasha and Kagome's absence at school, as well as their hellish looks. Miroku had commented on something along the lines of “…looking as if you've been to hell and back…” and the expression that passed through Kagome's eyes gave Sango the distinct impression that the pervert had hit quite close to home. Afterward, Kagome had sauntered off on the account of some dismissible and rather poorly made up excuse, to which Inuyasha had glared at Miroku for even opening his mouth and followed after her like a loyal puppy. Miroku had just shrugged, containing a blank look at Sango as if he had no idea what he did wrong… to this, Sango just rolled her eyes and shook her head. He had no finesse when it came to the delicate situation of handling women's emotions, even if the two women present were not quite so delicate.

As they all wandered in the parking lot, Sango recalled this and wondered if this was right… it seemed as if Inuyasha handled the female species better than Miroku did, and she figured it might have been the other way around… Shaking her head and deciding not to think further on it, she lifted her hand as Inuyasha and Kagome waved at them. “See you around,” Inuyasha called out, offering his hand to Kagome to take her satchel, which ended up in a quiet, yet apparently heated debate concerning it.

Sango couldn't quite understand how they were knit-picky about something as mundane as a school bag, and apparently Miroku thought along the same lines for he commented to her, “They're worse than an old married couple.”

Sano just nodded seriously in confirmation, and they both looked at each other in a silent agreement.

There was something seriously psychotic with those two, and they shouldn't get involved where that was concerned if they preferred to be alive.

“I have two hands, you know, Inuyasha,” Kagome seethed at him as he made a reach for her bag the third time in a row. Inuyasha glowered back at her, growling at her quietly, “Yeah but if you don't recall, you're just a little bit weak right now. In fact, we shouldn't have gone to school. And you know what? You should probably just go home tonight.” Kagome stopped dead in her tracks as soon as those words left his lips, and he absent-mindedly succeeded in grabbing her satchel, not really noticing she had not put up a fight. He was too head-over with his triumph.

But as soon as he was about ten feet in front of her, he did notice and turned around. She had a shocked expression on her face, and looked somewhat lost. Inuyasha furrowed a brow in concern, and went to her.
“Ka…Kagome? You… okay?”

Inuyasha was taken aback when sharp blue eyes filled with tears lifted to meet his, giving him a dignified look as she brushed past him without answering.

“Ka…gome? Kagome! Wait!”

She huffed, shaking her head indignantly, not even gracing him with a look. To say Inuyasha was confused was the very least, as he rushed past her to grab her by the shoulders.

“Whoa, hold up. What's wrong?”

Kagome glared at him, before lifting her hand and shoving him away roughly. His eyes widened, for she had shoved a large amount of energy behind it and burned him as she did. The most surprising part was he figured she did not realize she had that much control, or if she didn't have such control, that she was so responsive to emotion and didn't realize what she had done.

“How stupid are you? `What's wrong?' What do you mean, `what's wrong'?!” Inuyasha blinked. “What…. What I said… what's wrong?” He began to get uneasy… he hated making Kagome mad, she could be terrifying when she was mad… And that was saying a lot, because Inuyasha was hardly scared of anything.

In fact, as he thought about it, the only thing he was scared of was Kagome. Whether it was her crying or shouting, it didn't make a sense of difference…

“You're a real idiot, you know that right? I shouldn't even have to answer that question, it's so fucking stupid.”

Realization dawned on Inuyasha then, and it probably graced him just a little bit too late.

“Hey… wait… what?! I was only trying to look out for you!” Inuyasha defended.

“Yeah, yeah, by feeding me to the wolves?! What were you thinking?!” Kagome demanded, her face flushing in frustration and aggravation. Her eyes shined brightly with a tell-tale sign of tears, and Inuyasha swallowed harshly. He gaped at her, unsure what to say. In truth, he hadn't been thinking. He just wanted her to be safe, and he thought she might be safer at her house…

Of course, that's where the mess had begun… but…

After a few moments of silence, she gave out a loud noise of frustration, and pointed a finger at him accusingly, “I knew it! You weren't! Geeze… AGH! Sometimes you're just the biggest idiot, Inuyasha! And that is with a capital `I', BAKA!”

She turned around and stomped off, leaving Inuyasha feeling rather abashed and flustered with himself. Trying to piece together his bruised pride, Inuyasha raced after her, “Geeze, I was trying, okay?! Can you fucking blame me for wanting you safe, Kagome?!”

Kagome turned around and gave him a look… it was a look of tiredness, of wanting, of… of just pure weariness… “I'm never safe Inuyasha… ever. In six years I haven't been safe, and it's just getting worse… okay…? I just want… to be beside you… and… and feel happy while I can… So just… let me stay with you, okay?”

Inuyasha winced at her tone of voice, so close to breaking and so close to giving up. Tenderly he reached for her, looking down at her sadly. “I'm sorry Kagome. I just don't know what to do for you, what I can do for you. I just feel like… I failed you… And I can't…”

He stopped there. He couldn't say it. I can't protect you.

Inuyasha swallowed hard… it was…

I can't look at her…

Slowly, he averted his eyes to the ground and tried to wet his dry lips nervously. He felt so weak saying those words…

But as soon as he felt warm arms wrapping around his torso, reaching as high as they possibly could, he knew that despite this… he could never leave her or deny her anything she could ever possibly want from him.

He watched the top of her head work its way further into his chest as he felt her tiny frame shaking against him as she whispered, “…let's go home, Inuyasha.”

And Inuyasha could only oblige her.

Kagome looked up at him. He stared down at her with those striking golden eyes, not saying a word as her body was crushed further to his. She cried out in pain, pushing against the binding body which held her. She felt as if she might be broken under the pressure, until she heard the voice above her speak. “Well?! Do you want to live or die?!”

Kagome felt her brow furrow, as she reached hesitantly for the arrow which held him to the tree he was bound to. I want to live.

Wrapping her fingers tentatively around it, she closed her fist and pulled as hard as she could, “I WANT TO LIVE!”

A bright flash caught her attention, and she turned to watch herself falling through the air… an ugly demon with the torso of a woman and the body of a centipede bit through her as if she were a delicacy. A small, shining… something… came from her body and fell towards the earth…

Kagome frowned, unsure of what to make of it.

She looked up, and soulful brown eyes peered down at her. Silky midnight hair floated about her, and her alabaster skin gave her an unearthly presence. The seriousness of her voice was conveyed through her eyes, and somehow Kagome could feel the coldness of her flesh without even having to touch her. Her skin was like ice, when it should have been warm, alive, feeling.

But she couldn't understand it, though she knew this woman.

It's gone.

With this, she disappeared and Kagome was filled with dread.

She had lost it.

Something important.

Something she had to get back.

And she didn't even know where to start as she opened her eyes and realized that she didn't even know what it was she had to search for.
