Chapter 1
"Kagome...I love you," Inuyasha whispered holding Kagome close. It was very cold, snow everywhere, all around them.
"I love you too..." Kagome returned, huddling nearer to him, trying to keep warm. She felt as if things had been like this for so long. Him and her. Like this together. 'It's like a dream...' Kagome thought. 'Like a really wonderful dream...but it isn't this time...' It was then Inuyasha kissed her, but she soon unfelt him slipping away from her. And fading everything becoming dark, the wind and snow all over and it was freezing, Kagome sat on the snow. "he'll come back...at least I hope he will...but i'll wait for him...come back Inuyasha...please...just come back...I miss you already..." She murmured in the cold.
"Kagome..." Kagome stood up.
"Inuyasha?"
"Kagome!"
"No...it isn't..." she sad sadly, sitting down upon the snow again.
"Kagome! Please be alright! Kagome!"
"I won't be alright until Inuyasha comes back...well, I suppose i'll be...but it just isn't the same...: Kagome returned to the faint voice in the air.
"Please wake up!"
"Wake up? But I am awake...at least...I think I am...of course...I don't feel the same...where am I? What's happened? Someone was here...Inuyasha...what happened? Oh no! It was something wonderful! Why don't I remember?!" Kagome said to herself.
"Wake up!!"

Suddenly everything was so bright, Kagome couldn't stand it, and she found herself lying down, a blanket on her, and a blizzard whipping through the air viscously blowing her hair around wildly. "Kagome!" Said the voice again. Kagome now saw it was Kaede and blinked a couple of times, realizing what had happened, was a dream. "Are ye alright?" Kaede inquired. Kagome slowly sat up, clutching the blanket tightly to her.
'It was a dream...' she thought. 'I should have figured as much...Inuyasha would never...'
"Kagome?" Kaede said loudly, interrupting Kagome's thoughts. Kagome looked at her and staggered upward. Kaede helped her up. "Ye fell and then...well...I suppose you must have been exhausted...ye fell asleep almost immediately..." Kagome didn't reply. She looked out into the snowy hills. She remembered the kiss in her dream. It had been so real.
How could have it been a dream? And when Inuyasha faded...it didn't hurt that much she realized...it was almost as if she couldn't feel the pain...couldn't know it...wasn't aware... For some reason this frightened her. Kaede began to proceed forward, but Kagome wasn't so sure. Kaede stopped and turned to look at her "Do ye need to rest longer?" she inquired. Kagome stared at her for a moment, still a bit dazed and feeling strangely. Finally, she shook her head and the two continued through the snow.
"Dear Kagome..." Shippo said as he wrote. "Where are you? We got to the cabin a long time ago."
"Idiot, it's not as if you can send it to her," Inuyasha growled, pacing around the cabin,
"Oh, leave him alone Inuyasha, he's just worried," Miroku said, calmly, sipping some tea. shutting his eyes, he opened one. "Kind of like you." Bam! Inuyasha slammed into the table.
"I am NOT worried. I'm sick of protecting her, not if she's going to be stupid and get lost out there!" he thundered, and he continued pacing.
"So why are you pacing nervously?" Sango inquired. Inuyasha paused and glared at her.
"Shut up." He resumed his pacing.
"Also..." Shippo said, still scribbling down the letter. "...please come back soon, Inuyasha's really worried about you."
"I'm NOT worried!" Inuyasha repeated continuing to pace.
"He says he's not, but he's nervously pacing," Shippo said, writing the same down.
"Write something ELSE!!!" Inuyasha roared. Shippo looked up from the letter he was writing and stuck his tongue out at him. Inuyasha grunted and and continued pacing and Shippo kept writing.
"I miss you already, and so does Sango and Miroku and especially Inuyasha,' Shippo said. Inuyasha growled, "he says he misses you SO much he'll kiss you when you get back!"
"Do you have a death wish!?" Inuyasha bellowed, grabbing for the letter. The small kitsune held it out of his reach. "Quit writing lies!"
"It's my letter. I can write whatever I want!" Shippo replied.
"Just let him write, Shippo's just being Shippo," Sango told him.
"Oh yeah, well I'll just say the same thing when Miroku rubs your butt the next time," Inuyasha grumbled.
"Speaking of which..." Miroku said, as he scooted over nearer to Sango. Sango felt his hand on her rear-end, her face quickly reddening, and her right hand clenching into a fist.
"You...PERV!!!" *smack*
"Ow." Miroku rubbed his face, wincing in pain, "You never hit me that hard before..." he whined. Sango shook in rage.
"Well, you can't get mad at him, Sango, he's just--" But Inuyasha stopped at the look Sango was giving him.
"...so make it back for all of our sakes (especially Inuyasha's)," Shippo said with finality. Inuyasha glared at him. "Love Shippo."
"Ooh, love Shippo?" Miroku teased. Inuyasha's glare on Shippo intensified. Suddenly, a great chill filled the room and everyone turned to see the door sliding open to the cabin. It was then Kagome and Kaede walked in.
"Finally," Inuyasha growled.
"Kagome!" Shippo cheered. Kaede slid the door shut, Kagome shivered, hugging herself.
"Brrrrr, it's cold. Ah, but it's warm in here!" Kagome beamed.
"Hello, Kagome," Miroku said as she walked passed.
"Hi, Kagome," Sango greeted her.
"And no one says hello to Kaede," Kaede mumbled to herself.
"Why is Kaede talking about herself in the third person?" Miroku inquired.
"I don't know, but it's kind of creepy..." Sango returned.
"Hey, I made a letter to you Kagome!" Shippo beamed. Kagome walked up to him.
"Oh yeah?" she returned sweetly, leaning in.
"No! There's nothing to see here," Inuyasha said loudly, scooting between Kagome and Shippo. Shippo growled at him.
"Could you move, Inuyasha?" Kagome asked, with slight annoyance
"No! Don't move..." Miroku cried, quickly moving over to them and placing something over them with a swift motion. "You two are standing under the mistletoe," he informed them and they slowly looked up seeing the plant and Shippo giggled.
"WHAT?!" Inuyasha exclaimed.
"Oh my gosh, it's not even Christmas!" Kagome cried.
"Yeah, but there's a blizzard out there, close enough," Sango put in.
"Shut up," Inuyasha said.
"I'm not kissing him. It's not even christmas," Kagome said, cheeks heating up.
"I wouldn't kiss that hag no matter what time of the year it was," Inuyasha said. Kagome growled at him.
"Well, I wouldn't kiss such a BIG FAT JERK like YOU anytime of the year, EITHER! Even if the WORLD depended on it!" Kagome exclaimed.
"Yeah, well I--"
"So are you guys going to kiss or what?" Sango inquired.
"NO!!" Inuyasha and Kagome shouted at once.
"You know you want to," Shippo said, watching both of their faces turn red, "I mean, Inuyasha was SO worried about you, Kagome!!"
"What?! I was not!! Quiet, shrimp!" Inuyasha cried.
"I'm not a shrimp!" Shippo yelled.
"Here we go again..." Miroku sighed, massaging his forehead.
"I know...how babyish do you get?" Sango returned.
"Well, I'm not arguing," Kagome said.
"Inuyasha, just admit you love her and then we can all be at peace!" Shippo cried.
"You're such a little idiot! Say this to yourself over and over until your puny brain gets it right. Kagome is way too much of a pain to be bothered with. Sure she has her good qualities, which I can't think of right now--"
"Hey!!" Kagome shouted.
"What? The truth hurts?" Inuyasha said about to burst out laughing.
"You are SUCH a jerk!" Kagome cried.
"Oh, you're not arguing, huh?" Miroku said.
"Be quiet, lech," Kagome snapped. Miroku sighed defeatedly.
"There's no stopping them," he sighed.
"Yeah, but the lech comment was true," Sango grumbled.
"But all I did was this--" Miroku said approaching her. Sango backed away from him.
"I'm warning you, Miroku, next time you'll be leaving with more than just a slap mark, I'm tired of your wandering hand!" Sango cried.
"Oh don't blame it," Miroku said, looking at his hand more closely. "It really is sorry. And it doesn't bite Sango."
"Hmph!" Sango said, looking away.
"Come on you can't stay mad at me forever." Sango didn't look at him, frowning still. "You know you like it..."
"I do NOT!" Sango cried angrily, walking away from him, blushing.
"Are you blushing?" Miroku teased.
"No."
"You are, aren't you?"
"I'm warning you monk!" Sango cried., facing him with a clenched fist.
"Maybe if you HAD half a brain you could save yourself for once instead of screaming, 'Inuyasha!' ", Inuyasha shouted at Kagome, saying his name in a mock girl voice, "and waiting like a helpless damsel in distress for me to come and rescue you!"
"Inuyasha, what are you doing?" Shippo asked calmly, watching Kagome and Inuyasha bicker, "You like carrying her in your arms and saving her, why are you trying to ruin that?"
"Shut up, Shippo," both Kagome and Inuyasha said together.
"Can ye all be quiet?!" Kaede shouted. They all continued arguing. "QUIET!!!!!" screamed Kaede. Everyone was silent, staring at her. "Now, that ye all have been quiet for one second, I think it is best that we get some sleep. If all ye are going to do is fight, then just go to bed so I needn't have to hear ye! Now, I'm getting the blankets, put out the fire, and choose the places ye wish to sleep." With that, Kaede left the room, quite vexed. they all stared silent for a moment.
"I'm not putting out the fire," Shippo said.
"Well, I'm no good at such things," Miroku put in.
"I'm a demon exterminator, no fire putter-outer," Sango said. They looked at Kagome.
"What? Are you kidding? I put on so much hairspray I'd be a living torch if i even went NEAR that thing!" Kagome cried. All heads turned to Inuyasha.
"What? Hell no!" Inuyasha cried.
"Come on Inuyasha, you always rough it!" Kagome said.
"Yeah, I'm too little, you can't trust me," Shippo said with a wink.
"Well, what's your excuse, Miroku?" Inuyasha asked.
"Well, it's in my many vows as a monk that I can't--"
"Like you keep any of your vows!" Sango cried.
"I do so keep my vows!" Miroku exclaimed defensively.
"Oh, so I guess that vow of chastity slipped your mind?" Sango inquired.
"Oh, that vow..." Miroku said being thoughtful, there was a pause as the others studied him doubtfully, "I never made such a vow..." Inuyasha hit him over the head.
"Just put out the fire," Inuyasha said. Not long after Miroku put out the fire, Kaede was back with a pile of blankets and a sour mood. She dropped the blankets on the floor.
"Now, I'm sorry four is all I have, I won't be using a blanket. Ye decide who else isn't," Kaede told them, and went over to a corner of the room, where she lie and fell asleep almost immediately, snoring loudly.
"I don't need a stupid blanket," Inuyasha ranted, "I'm sleeping like I always do, right against the wall." Inuyasha sat and leaned against the nearest wall, preparing to sleep. Kagome had been so tired, she had already fallen asleep before Kaede had come back and Shippo, Miroku, and Sango all took one of the blankets. Sango lay close to the center of the room, and snuggled into the blanket she had and Shippo went near to the fire, where the embers were still giving off some heat. Miroku went next to Sango, who was visibly unhappy with the arrangement.
"What?" Miroku inquired. Sango sighed aggravatedly, and turned over in a huff away from him. Miroku's hand was already making its way toward her, but Sango somehow caught this and crushed it with her fist. "Ouch!" Miroku hissed in pain.
"Don't even think about it," Sango snapped. Miroku sighed.
"But you're not moving..." Miroku said with a smirk.
"I...I...don't...feel like it. I was here first, and I'm not moving because of you! Good night," Sango returned with anger.
"Do you always have to be so mean?"
"Good night," Sango replied crossly.
It didn't take long for it to get much colder in the cabin as the embers were soon totally burned out and blizzard hadn't yet faded. Inuyasha had almost fallen asleep when he heard Kagome shivering and realized he himself was very cold. He looked through dark, noticing she had no blanket. "Stupid," he whispered. He got up and slowly walked over to the last remaining blanket and picked it up and dropped it on her. Her shivering quickly died down.
Inuyasha realized he was staring at her, he shook his head, snapping out of it. "Whatever," he grumbled, walking back to his previous spot.
"Inuyasha?" Came Kagome's voice. For some reason it scared him, and he froze. "What are you doing up?" Inuyasha blushed slightly.
"N-nothing..." he returned. Kagome fidgeted a bit.
"Did you give me the blanket?" she asked. Inuyasha wonder if he should say no.
"Yeah...but only because your shivering was keeping me awake!" Inuyasha replied. Kagome laughed. "What's so funny?"
"It's weird, your shivering was keeping me awake," she said.
"And you didn't give me the blanket," Inuyasha returned with his usual bad attitude.
"I didn't know there were blankets..." Kagome said. Inuyasha's arms are crossed and he still looked angry. "I'm sorry...you can have this one if you want..."
"No...it's okay..." Inuyasha returned.
"No, now I feel bad...' Kagome said.
"Yeah, but...you were out there in that blizzard, you might have gotten sick...you need it more than me..." There was a short silence.
"...Why don't you come...with me...then?" Kagome inquired.
"What?"
"Well...because...I won't be able to get to sleep, I'll feel too guilty, and you want me to have it so..." Kagome trailed off. Inuyasha looked away.
"I...don't...sleep well laying down...I've never slept like that...for a long time..." Inuyasha returned.
"Why do you sleep like you do...against the wall?" Kagome asked.
"Because...I know that at anytime and any place something or someone could attack, I always have to be ready to get on my feet, lying down leaves you open for assault..."
"Well, I'm sure you'll be fine, I don't think anything could survive that blizzard..." Kagome looked up at him with a smile, but he was only staring at the wall.
'Why am I so nervous anyway?' Inuyasha thought, 'Aren't I cold, and...it's not as if she likes me or...I like her...but...'
"Inuyasha..." Kagome said, bringing him out of his thoughts, Kagome folded some of the blanket back, and patted the ground. She laughed, "I don't care if you snore."
"I don't snore!" Inuyasha exclaimed.
"Shh, the others are sleeping," Kagome whispered, "Come on, I won't be able to sleep if you don't. You don't have to worry, okay?"
'It's freezing out here!' Inuyasha thought, 'But I don't want to do that--just because--I don't know...of course I don't know what harm it could do...plus she'll only bug me throughout the night if I don't... damn I'm cold...' Inuyasha slowly began walking toward her.
"Come on, hurry up," Kagome said, turning over away from him, "I'm cold, folding the blanket up for you." Inuyasha reached the blanket and slowly sat down, pulling it over himself. He felt awkward doing it, but he tried to forget about the warmth climbing to his cheeks. "Now isn't that much better? Gosh, that pride you have makes you so stubborn, you won't take help from anybody."
"Mmm hmm," Inuyasha replied, not really listening to her. 'What am I doing? This is so weird...of course...I do feel a lot warmer...' Inuyasha felt his nerves calming and closed his eyes beginning to drift off. 'Geez...it's so much easier to sleep like this...I had forgotten...'

"Mother?" Inuyasha asked, sitting up.
"Lay back down, Inuyasha, you need you rest you had a hard day," his mother said softly.
"Oh but...I can't sleep...aren't I supposed to protect you...everyone keeps telling me how I'm the man of the house..." his mother laughed, tucking him in.
"Oh they're just joking Inuyasha, you're still little...you need my protection," his mother returned. There was a silence as Inuyasha was thinking. "Inuyasha?"
"Then...if you protect me...is it okay if...if you can sleep with me...because...I'm scared..." Inuyasha returned. His mother stroked his hair from his small forehead lovingly.
"Yes, it's alright, here, move over..."
"No...I have to be on the outside...at least then I can protect you a little...Mother...please?" Inuyasha said.
"Well, alright, come on, get out." Inuyasha slid out of his bed and his mother got in and he followed.
"Now will you be able to sleep?"
"Mmm hmm," Inuyasha returned distractedly.

Inuyasha was almost asleep and had forgotten Kagome was there entirely. "Mother..." he whispered, hugging Kagome. He fell asleep shortly after that, not worrying at all of what the next morning would bring. Just like a child, drifting off to dream land.
