Chapter One ~ Discovery

Sesshomaru stopped dead in his tracks, raising his head and smelling the air. Rin approached him and stood at his side, watching him intently. “What is it my Lord?” she asked softly.

“Hmm.” Was Sesshomaru's only reply as he started following the scent. It was not the smell that interested him; it was what he couldn't smell that bothered him.

He pulled back some branches with his one arm to look down into a clearing. Just as he had expected, InuYasha, but no sign of the girl. He thought deeply about the situation for a moment before he started to smell something… different about his younger brother. He watched the young Inu for a moment and InuYasha stood up from his kneeling position by the stream and turned around. His eyes instantly fixing on his brothers, but Sesshomaru's eyes searched for confirmation which he found almost instantly.

“What the hell are you doing here?” InuYasha spat, crossing his arms tightly over his chest, glaring at Sesshomaru and Rin each in turn.

Sesshomaru said nothing, only tried with all his might to keep his eyes on InuYasha's face and not his protruding stomach that easily gave away his condition.

“Better we find you than some demon that could easily have killed you in such a state.” Rin said smoothly, wandering past the line of trees and walking directly over to InuYasha who blushed a little at Rin's forwardness.

“What difference does it make to you?”

“No difference.” Sesshomaru said flatly. “Come Rin.”

Rin ran back to Sesshomaru's side and they started off back into the forest but Sesshomaru stopped again. “Rin, go ahead and find us shelter for the night.”

“My Lord?”

“Go now.”

Rin nodded and walked off ahead, leaving Sesshomaru with his thoughts. Every fibre of his body was telling him to just leave, but a voice in the back of his head was telling him not to. Usually he would ignore those little voices, but this one was harder to push away. It was always hard to push away the voice of his father.

`Sesshomaru, I want you to take care of InuYasha…'

Sesshomaru turned on his heel but stopped again. Why should he? After all, InuYasha had proved himself to be quite capable of looking after him self for many years now. But then again, as Rin had already pointed out, in his current state he was little more that a walking target. Sesshomaru started to get angry and turned away again. InuYasha had got that way himself and had to learn to live with it. He sighed. Try as he might, all he could find in his mind for comfort was his fathers words.

He turned again and looked back into the clearing. InuYasha was struggling to put together a fire and holding tightly onto his stomach. Sesshomaru frowned, sensing something that he had not smelt before. Fear and anger, but most worryingly of all, pain.

He pushed through into the clearing and approached his brother who, despite the chill of the night, was sweating as he ignored his brother's presence and carried on trying to build his fire.

Sesshomaru felt stupid, he just didn't know how to talk to his sibling, only how to taunt him, and now wasn't the right time for insults. He took a deep breath. `Just talk to him like you would talk to Rin.' He thought to himself before turning his attention back to InuYasha. “Are you alright?”

“Leave me alone Sesshomaru.” InuYasha replied shortly, but his voice had lost much of its usual spiteful character.

“Rin!” Sesshomaru called out and the young woman appeared quickly from the undergrowth, making her way over to her Lord's side. “I would like you to examine InuYasha.” Sesshomaru finished softly.

Rin nodded and moved quickly across the area between them, kneeling down beside InuYasha. “I don't need…” But InuYasha's words were cut short and he doubled over in pain, clutching at his stomach and contorting his face as he tried desperately to force the feeling from his body.

Sesshomaru shook his head. “Foolish pup.” Despite all his airs and graces, he was becoming a little concerned about InuYasha. He had honoured his father's wishes by coming back, but now it seemed almost as if he would have failed his father by allowing the younger Inu to suffer such pains. “She will not harm you.” He said flatly as InuYasha composed himself.

InuYasha blushed and glared at Sesshomaru. “I don't want you here.” He said scathingly.

“Well then I will leave, but Rin will stay.” Sesshomaru replied and without another thought he walked out of the clearing, settling himself on the other side of the line of trees so as to remain aware of everything that went on.

“I will not harm you.” Rin said reassuringly, placing a hand on InuYasha's shoulder and steadily encouraging him to lie back, she reached for his waist he swatted her hands away.

“I am capable of taking my own clothes off.” He spat.

On the other side of the clearing Sesshomaru smirked to himself. `Well that much is obvious.'

Rin rubbed her hands together in an attempt to warm them. “I need to see just how dilated you are, I will be a gentle as I can manage.” Rin said apologetically. No sooner had he finger tip reached his entrance, InuYasha pulled back from her, loosing his composure almost completely.

Rin stared at him for a moment before realisation swept over her. “Oh InuYasha… why didn't you say anything?”

“I don't need your pity.” InuYasha said angrily.

“Then, you did not intend to have this baby at all?”

Sesshomaru's ears pricked up and he listened carefully as the conversation went on.

“No.” InuYasha said softly, his ears drooping slightly.

“You should have said something; I never wanted to make you uncomfortable.” Rin said softly.

“I just… I didn't want him to know.” InuYasha said, motioning his head toward the trees where Sesshomaru had walked.

“Why?”
InuYasha's ears drooped even further as he absentmindedly fiddled with a stray piece of silver hair. “I don't want him to make fun of me anymore.”

Sesshomaru stood and walked back on the scene. InuYasha avoided his gaze as another wave of pain came over him. Sesshomaru sensed it and walked over to him, trying to find something that he could do to ease his brothers suffering.

InuYasha grabbed his brother's robes as the height of his contraction struck him.

Rin glanced pleadingly at Sesshomaru and he rolled his eyes. He lowered himself to his knees and took InuYasha's hand. InuYasha stared at him, but Sesshomaru purposely looked away from him. InuYasha frowned and pulled his hand from Sesshomaru's grasp.

“I said I didn't want you here.”

“Well it's getting dark.”

“What's the matter Sesshomaru, scared of the dark?” InuYasha said sarcastically.

“I fear for Rin's safety.” He replied shortly.

Rin glanced at Sesshomaru, but it was not concern for her that she saw. Something had changed in Sesshomaru, and she saw little of the hate that would usually have plagued him. All she saw now was an awkward man, trying to forge a relationship with a brother he never found the time to love.

The change had not gone unnoticed by InuYasha either. It wasn't only his own fear filling the air. Sesshomaru feared something too. But what could such a powerful demon have to fear?

InuYasha felt the steady onset of pain and snatched back Sesshomaru's hand. “Why?” InuYasha managed through his pain. “Why do you… insist on staying with… with me?”

Sesshomaru opened his mouth before engaging his brain. “I told you, I'm here for Rin.” He snapped. Almost instantly he regretted it as a tear escaped his brother's eye. “InuYasha?”

“It just hurts so much!” He yelled. Better to shout about it than whimper like a baby. He steadied his breathing and retrieved his hand again. He wasn't sure what he had wanted or expected Sesshomaru to say, all he knew was that what he had said was not what InuYasha had wanted to hear. And that was what hurt most of all.
