Chapter Four - Need: Part 2

InuYasha woke slowly with terrible back ache and looked around. The trees over hung the area with such density that he could hardly see anything at all. He sat up and looked to his right, and in the distance was a feint ring of light that must have been where they had come from. To his left was a much closer exit and in it stood the silhouette of his brother. “How long…”

“About an hour.” Sesshomaru said before InuYasha could finish. Though InuYasha couldn't see it, Sesshomaru was staring at him, but he did pick up on something: Sesshomaru's voice. It was considerably softer than it had been, almost caring. InuYasha shook the thought from his head.

“Where is Rin?”

“She went on ahead.”

“Will she be alright on her own?”

“Human though she may be, I think it only fair to say that she could fend off danger as easily as I could, she's been that way for a long time now…”

“Then… then why do you two still travel together?

Sesshomaru fell silent for a moment, the conversation was getting almost comfortable and it had him a little confused, it wasn't normal to say the least. “For the same reason we always have.” He replied in a far more blunt voice. “Because she follows me everywhere.”

The silence that fell between the brothers didn't last very long. InuYasha gasped a breath and put his hand on his stomach. “What is it?” Sesshomaru asked quickly, taking a cautious step forward.

“He's a vicious little so-en-so.” InuYasha said quietly, rubbing his stomach.

“He?”

“Yes he.”

“But how…”

“I just do.” InuYasha face dropped, along with it went his tone of voice. “I often wonder whether to name him after father.”

Sesshomaru could smell InuYasha's tears and something inside him snapped. InuYasha, whether he hated him or not, was in a far too fragile condition to be spoken to the way they always had done. “No.” Sesshomaru said as comfortingly as he could manage. “He should have the name that you want for him. The past is in the past, and that is where it should stay.”

“Have you ever thought about it?”

“About what?”

“Having children? Well, not necessarily you, but, in general?”

Sesshomaru smirked. “The likelihood of me getting pregnant is about as likely as you ever telling me who the father of yours is, its not particularly common, even among demons, besides, could you imagine me with children?”

“Well you were always very good with Rin.”

“Not by choice.”

“So you have never thought about it even for a second.”

“No, certainly not.”

InuYasha's heart fell. He would have liked to have stayed with Rin and Sesshomaru a little longer, until the baby was a little older, and he had more chance of defending the two of them single-handedly. `No.' He thought to himself. `I don't want to stay a while, I just, don't want to have to go at all. I want to be here with them.'

Rin broke the silence, walking back in and dropping firewood on the ground. “There's a small group of lesser demons about half a mile up ahead, but other than that I think we will be quite safe here for a while.”

“Where are these lesser demons?” Sesshomaru asked sharply and Rin looked up.

“They aren't anything to worry about; I think they were headed in the other direction anyway.”

“Rin…” Sesshomaru said, elongating the name with a dangerous tone of voice.

Rin sighed. “Like I said; about half a mile up ahead.”

Sesshomaru turned to leave, but paused and turned back. “This should… it should keep you a little warmer.” He said awkwardly, lifting the fur from his shoulder and placing it in InuYasha's lap before making a swift departure.

InuYasha stared at the fur in his lap. “He likes you.” Rin said softly.

“How do you know?” InuYasha asked softly, still unable to raise his eyes from the fur.

“Well, him giving you that is like you giving someone your clothes. It's all he had of your fathers and he didn't seem to begrudge leaving it at all.”

InuYasha mused over the thought for a moment and smiled.

“You should tell him how you feel about him.”

InuYasha looked up at Rin whose eyes where fixed on the small flames that were the beginning of her fire. “What do you mean?”

“And fool can see it. Pregnancy can cause a sort of `glow' in people, but you don't just glow. When you see him, or even think of him, you shine. You're shining right now even as I speak of him.”

“He doesn't want me. Anyway, he's got his little honour code and I pretty sure that loving your half-demon brother is against that code in more ways than one.”

Rin smiled and glanced up at InuYasha. “What do you have to loose by telling him?”

“A lot.” InuYasha said bluntly.

“Well, like what?”

“Rejection. He could send me away, at least like this, I can stay a little longer, and I can still be with him. I don't want to have to go, but, I know I will have to.” Tears began to glisten in his eyes and he pulled the fur up to cover his face, taking in the smell of Sesshomaru that lingered on it. “I know I have to go… and be alone again.”

“I don't think he wants you to go, Lord InuYasha.”

“Of course he does, he hates me and he hates kids.”

“He says all that stuff, but I think he only says it because he believes the same thing as you do, he thinks that you don't want to stay. And anyway, if you did have to go, you could always go back to the others, you wouldn't be alone.” She paused. “Why did you leave them? Surely you would have been safe and well looked after at the village.”

InuYasha's whole body tensed as he looked up at Rin. “I did something… something awful and I…” He couldn't finish, only sat and let the memories wash over him, causing his body to tense so hard that the baby kicked out to get some breathing room. InuYasha lay back, pulling the fur around himself. “The sooner he's born the better. I will go and everything can go back to the way it was.”

Rin watched in silence as InuYasha fussed around and eventually got comfortable, falling to sleep with a look of sheer unhappiness on his face that moved Rin to tears as she sat beside him.

Sesshomaru approached quietly and glanced from Rin to InuYasha and back again. “What is it?”

Rin sniffed as she lay down next to InuYasha's sleeping form. “I can't tell you.”

“What? What can't you tell me?”

InuYasha opened his eyes and saw Rin beside him, she smiled as best she could and InuYasha took a deep breath. “I love you, Sesshomaru.”
