Chapter Five - Life
InuYasha sat up, just as he had expected, Sesshomaru hadn't replied. Rin had squirreled away somewhere, so as not to get in the way of what she had hoped would be a love scene. InuYasha looked up at Sesshomaru and his breath caught in his throat as he stared. “You're bleeding…”
Sesshomaru knelt down beside the fire, his shirt hung from him in tatters and blood trickled from a gash in his chest that he held a piece of cloth over. “It's nothing.” He said determinedly, carrying on as if nothing had happened.
InuYasha hauled himself up and crawled over to Sesshomaru. “Please, let me try and help. After everything you have done for me.” He reached out and pulled back Sesshomaru's hand, unveiling the bruised and bleeding flesh. “At least let me clean it.”
InuYasha pulled his tongue over the wound but Sesshomaru pushed him back. “I don't need any help.” He spat scornfully.
“Please Sesshomaru; it looks better already if you just look. I owe you so much, I just want to…”
“You owe me answers that you have constantly refused me.” Sesshomaru replied viciously.
InuYasha took a deep breath, hoping that the questioning would be over quickly so that he could help his brother. “What do you want to know?”
“Why didn't you stay in the village to have your child?”
“I couldn't stay there, that's where it all happened, and once upon a time I had some pride, I didn't want anyone to see me like this.”
“Who is the father of the child you're carrying.”
InuYasha froze up. “I can't tell you.” He replied desperately.
“You said you wanted to help me InuYasha, now answer me!” Sesshomaru shouted.
“Please Sesshomaru I can't!” InuYasha shouted back, tears starting to flood down his face as he stood up.
Sesshomaru followed suit and also stood. “WHO IS HE?” He yelled in such a vile anger that InuYasha backed away from him in fear.
“I was raped in the village! Raped by a man who claimed he loved me but I meant nothing to him! As if I wasn't already pathetic enough in you eyes, now you want to hear everything that brought me here and it makes me look nothing more than what you have always been in me: your stupid, half demon, little brother!”
InuYasha turned and started to walk off, leaving Sesshomaru paralyzed on the spot. InuYasha stopped and looked back over his shoulder. “It's Miroku's. I hope you're happy with yourself.” He whispered darkly and took off into the dense darkness.
Sesshomaru's heart caught in his throat. The monk? He had always thought that they were friends, but he… Anger started to build in Sesshomaru but it quickly diminished into fear. Where was InuYasha going? Was he safe? And then a painful realization struck him. This was his entire fault.

InuYasha settled down at the foot of yet another tree in the pitch darkness and remained completely silent. The last thing he wanted was to be found be anyone until the baby was born and he was able to aptly defend himself. From the way his insides where starting to tense up, he had a nasty feeling that it wouldn't be long now.
InuYasha held his breath, determined not to make a sound at pain stuck his body with more intensity than I had done the last time he had been in labour. Sweat had already begun to build on his brow and InuYasha let out the breath in despair. Sesshomaru would find him for sure now, and see him in the most pitiful state he had ever been in.
Ten minutes or so had passed and Sesshomaru had not appeared. InuYasha made a vague attempt to crawl away from the area he was in so as to hide himself better but didn't get too far. Another contraction hit and his water broke in the same instant, causing him to whimper against his will as he dug his claws into the ground.
“InuYasha?”
Involuntary streams of tears rushed down InuYasha's face as the pain started to take him harder and faster than before, rendering him completely motionless on his knees. Sesshomaru forgot all his pride in an instant as he rushed to InuYasha's side, calling for Rin as he went.
He knelt down in front of InuYasha who pulled himself up enough to throw his arms around Sesshomaru's neck. “Please don't leave me.” He cried desperately, lacing his fingers through Sesshomaru's hair.
In turn, Sesshomaru put his arms round InuYasha as Rin burst in on the scene. “I'm sorry Lord InuYasha, but I need to…”
“Just do it.” InuYasha said quickly before crying out into Sesshomaru's shoulder. He grasped Sesshomaru's hair tighter as he did so, making the demon flinch for a second.
Sesshomaru hushed InuYasha, stroking his back soothingly as the hanou panted desperately for breath.
“Don't worry Lord InuYasha, it won't be long now.” Rin said comfortingly.
InuYasha cried out again and Sesshomaru found himself with the same frustrating feeling that had come over him when they had first found InuYasha. He wanted to help, but there was nothing at all he could do.
Rin watched his dilation closely. The contractions were now literally one after the other and all they needed now was the space for the baby to get out. Rin smiled. “When you're ready.”
InuYasha looked up at Sesshomaru, his faced blotched and eyes bloodshot. “I can't…” He whimpered as his continued to pant.
Sesshomaru lowered his head and caught InuYasha's gaze, holding it for a moment. “You can. I am going to help you.” He said slowly and InuYasha nodded gently. Sesshomaru nodded in return. “If there is anything you want me to do, say.”
InuYasha took a deep breath and bared down as hard as he could, unintentionally piecing Sesshomaru back with a claw. He stopped dead and pulled his hand away from Sesshomaru. “I'm sorry.”
“Rip me apart if it's what you need to do.”
“You must keep pushing Lord InuYasha.” Rin said softly.
InuYasha looked up at Sesshomaru again who smiled. “You can.” He said shortly.
InuYasha took in another breath and pushed harder than he had before, now more determined than ever. Partly because he wanted it to be over quickly, and partly because he didn't want to disappoint Sesshomaru. He felt the baby crown and a fresh wave of tears fell down his face. Taking another breath he pushed again, taking comfort in Sesshomaru stroking his hair down his back as the baby's head started to emerge.
“You're doing just fine.” Rin said as she placed her hand under the baby's head, ready to catch it as it descended.
InuYasha pushed again and he felt the head clear, but he felt so weak that he wasn't sure he could go on. He looked sadly up at Sesshomaru's face. “I'm so sorry.”
Sesshomaru leaned forward again, bringing himself into InuYasha's eye line as he had done before. “Don't give up. I know you can do it, you're stronger than this.”
“I'm not. I'm not as strong as you.”
“You are. Stronger in fact. You carried that baby all on your own all that time, I could not have done what you have, and you're so close.”
InuYasha pressed his head against Sesshomaru's. “Thank you.” He whispered before pulling back and pushing with every ounce of strength left in his body, crying out as he felt his body being stretched beyond its limits as the baby's shoulders and body began to slide from him, helped by Rin.
“One more big push.” Rin said happily as she looked down at the child.
InuYasha just did as he was told, a wave of pure relief hitting him as he felt the baby slide clear into Rin's hands and heard it start to cry.
Sesshomaru helped InuYasha onto his back and smiled at him. “I knew you could.” He said softly, dabbing at the sweat on InuYasha's face with his sleeve.
“It's a boy.” Rin said as she handed over a crying bundle of blankets. After doing so, she quickly grabbed another blanket and laid it over InuYasha's still exposed lower body.
“I knew you would be.” InuYasha said as tears filled his eyes again. Sesshomaru just sat beside then in silence, staring in awe at the two of them. InuYasha looked up at Sesshomaru. “He looks like dad.” He said quietly as the baby's crying slowly subsided.
Sesshomaru moved closer and looked at the baby. InuYasha wasn't wrong; he did have a lot of their father's features. He had markings on his eyes and cheeks that matched his own, no doubt they covered his body just as his did, but the tufts of hair on his head where black as night with shocking golden eyes in between.
Sesshomaru glanced at InuYasha. “Did you ever decide what you would call him?”
InuYasha smiled as he stared down at the baby, who wouldn't take his eyes off of Sesshomaru's face. “Not yet… his name will come to me.” He said softly before glancing at Sesshomaru. “I think he likes you.”
Sesshomaru smiled but it was quickly diminished. “I suppose you will be going soon.”
InuYasha's world shattered. Sesshomaru still wanted him to go. They had become so close and in just a few days, even so far as to cause words of encouragement and pride from Sesshomaru. All the same, InuYasha had known all along that this would not last forever, but that didn't mean to say that he wasn't sad that it hadn't turned out differently.
InuYasha nodded softly as he stared at the baby who was now asleep. “I heal quickly; we should be out of you way by tomorrow.”
“I don't mean to chase you away.”
“No, it's fine.” InuYasha lied. “I knew that we would have to go sooner or later, and now is as good a time as any. The way he keeps looking at you, he might be the next little half demon to follow you around forever if I don't drag him off anyway.” He finished with a false smile. The baby wasn't the only half demon who would have followed Sesshomaru to the ends of the earth.
