~*She said, "I've got to be honest, you're wasting your time if you're fishin' around here."
And I said, "You must be mistaken, I'm not foolin' this feelin' is real"
She said, "You've got to be crazy! What do you take me for? Some kind of easy mark?"

"No, you've got wits, you've got looks, you've got passion
but I swear that you've got me all wrong."
I'll be true, I'll be useful, I'll be cavalier, I'll be yours my dear,
I'll belong to you if you just let me through*~

~*~*~*~

Kagome ran home, she was tired and cold, but she kept running. She finally got home and locked herself in her room. As she regained her breath she stopped crying. Her sadness turned to anger. How dare he? He thinks I am just going to . . . do that! Whenever he wants? He's an incensative prick! Worse than that. He's . . . indescribable!

~*~

Inuyasha walked home. No, not walked, sulked. He sulked all the way home. Not because he didn't get any. He sulked because Kagome would never accept him now and her death would be on his concious.

~*~

Sesshomaru was contemplating the next best course of action. Knowing his little brother the way he did, Inuyasha would screw everything up and Sesshomaru himself would have to clean it up. This was one area where he could not step in and say something however. This time, Inuyasha had to clean up his own mess.

Sesshomaru was not one to give up easily however. Instead of beating Inuyasha to a bloody pulp and watching him die alone in an ally way (which was exactly what Sesshomaru wanted to accomplish), he tried to help the halfbreed. Sesshomaru knew Kagome would listen to him, if only he could tell her. He had to figure out how to tell her through his actions, rather than direct words. Magic was a very sensitive area, one wrong move could kill someone. Someone very dear to say another person.

As Sesshomaru continued to pace back and forth in his room, he began formulating a strategy. A foolproof strategy.

The simple mating of a demon was not as simple as it seemed. You bite ones neck, one becomes your mate. Simple? The complex magic dealing with something as simple as the tiny marks on ones neck create more havoke than perhaps the marks are worth. In the simplest words, mating is tricky. A mate is not to be taken lightly, as humans do. Humans take 'mating' or 'marriage' for granted. They know they can simply get a divorce, so there is no real strings attatched. Mating is very different. Mating involves true love, ones aura pulsing with anothers, two souls destined to be together for all of life and all the lives to follow. Mating was an act reserved only for those who were committed, more than committed, to their loved one. If a demon, and his mate, do not understand mating, it makes things all the more difficult in the end. Especially if one does not love the other, and one does not remember the events of such a tremendous act.

Sesshomaru now sat at his desk. He was planning an outline. A strategy of how Inuyasha could save Kagomes life. There were two ways. If your demon mate dies and you are not demon you die aswell. Killing Inuyasha at this point, was out of the question. Another way, is if you are to take another demon mate. If this other demon is truly stronger, they will be your rightful caretaker. Sesshomaru considered this but could never take Kagome without her concent, and he could not tell her of the circumstances. The only thing left to do was make sure Inuyasha and Kagome fell in love. Not just simple 'I love you' 'I love you back'. No. It had to be true love. Love that has your heart fluttering. Love that erases every thought from your brain and the only thing you are capable of doing is making 'ga ga' noises and staring like an infant. That was the kind of love he had to force upon the pair, without them knowing he was forcing it. Life was not going to be easy for one Sesshomaru Takahashi.

"Sess!" Sesshomaru growled at the interruption. He was formulating a strategy to save the woman he cared for more deeply than any other woman he had known; and his idiot halfbreed brother decided to come home.

"Why aren't you wooing Kagome?" Sesshomaru barked through the door.

"Wooing? Who says wooing?" Inuyasha barged in and sat on the bed. "Listen, she's mad at me again. We were having a moment and she ran away, thinking I was using her."

"You are suppose to be falling in love with this girl, and having her fall in love with you, and you just try and get busy?" Sesshomaru stood up, his chair nearly toppling over as he did so.

"Listen here Inuyasha," Sesshomaru walked closer and closer to Inuyasha as he spoke, "I would have no problem putting my claws through your heart - " Sesshomaru grabbed Inuyasha by the collar, lifting him inches off the ground, "providing one exsists inside you - and twisting them until your blood spilled down around me. Cause as I watched you dying I would know that I had my revenge. However, Kagome would die as well, and I can't have that." Sesshomaru dropped Inuyasha and sat back down at his desk.

"You're insane." Inuyasha chocked out as he massaged his neck.

"Fair enough." Sesshomaru didn't say another word as he continued to scribble down notes and plans.

Inuyasha didn't leave the room, he somehow knew that Sesshomaru needed him to stay. As Sesshomaru placed his pen in his pen holder and read over his notes he got a mystic look in his eye.

"It's time to call in . . . the cousin."

~*~*~

"Kagome!" Mai ran into her daughters room nearly jumping with excitement.

"What Mom?" Kagome yawned as she looked at her digital clock. It was eight in the morning.

"Guess what?"

"I don't know." Kagome wan't really irritated so much as exhausted.

"Your cousin is coming to visit!" Mai smiled widely, looking almost too happy for words.

"My cousin? I have a cousin?" Kagome yawned again.

"Yes! Of course! She lives in Manhattan with Sheleah. You must remember her?" Mai put her hands on her hips, still smiling.

"Oh yes, Sheleah. Got ya." Kagome yawned one more time before rolling over and falling back asleep.

"Kids."

~*~*~

"Auntie Mai! It's been ages!" a short girl, with bouncy black hair and quite a cute figure, bounced into the apartment.

"How is Sheleah and her new husband?" Mai wasn't quite sure of the new husbands name. There had been so many.

"Oh, Sheleah is great, and Marty is a goof." She smiled a semi-ditzy smile, that made her look even cuter.

"Wonderful. Come in, come in. Make yourself comfortable."

"Thank you Auntie." The girl turned and examined every inch of the apartment - that she could see. "Oh, where is Kagome? I've missed her so very much!"

"She's sleeping. I don't know if you remember, but she never was a morning person." Mai took her nieces belongings into Kagomes room, careful to be extra loud.

"Go on, go wake her." She smiled as the girl bounced into Kagomes room.

Yes, the girl didn't walk, she bounced. Nor did she talk; she giggled with presision.

"KAGOME!" she bounced on her cousins bed. She hit her a few times, gently of course, on the arm, hoping to wake her.

"What?" Kagome opened her eyes and smiled as comprehension hit her. "RIN!" she hugged her cousin and was fully awake. "Oh my goodness I haven't seen you in like ten years! How are you?"

"I'm doing great. I live with Sheleah, and Marty. I miss mum and dad now and then but ya know. How about you? Going to Ithaca? That's awesome. I go to CSU." Rin seemed extremely proud, "And I am head cheerleader. First freshmen ever to do it!" she continued bouncing. Kagome had forgotten how lively her cousin was and wondered why she never spent more time with her.

"That's awesome Rin. I am happy for you." Kagome tried to express every ounce of happiness for her cousin.

"What's wrong Kaggie? Somethings up?" Rin stopped bouncing, she nearly stopped smiling, "I know we haven't been close, but you can tell me."

"Maybe later." Kagome smiled and looked at the clock. It was now ten o' seven. "Come on, lets go out to the mall."

Rin became animated instantly. "Yes!" she bounced out the door, "I'll be in the livingroom waiting on you!"

Kagome dressed hurridely and went to explain the day to her mother. Her mother gave the pair some spending money and they went to the mall.

~*~
Kagome was going to show Rin around, but Rin seemed to do just fine on her own. As the day progressed Kagome wondered how her cousin recieved so much energy. Not to think of the fact that all of that energy fit inside the tiny person.

As they finally took a break at Annies Coffee Hut Kagome took the time to take in the people walking by. She loved making up thoughts for the innocent pedestrians. She was busy working on a real drepressing story for a 'wanna be' thug when she caught a glimpse of something that made her heart stop.

"Kagome." her breath came back to her and she formed a sentance.

"Sesshomaru." well, a word was close enough.

"It's good to see you." his words weren't forced, in fact they were entirely from the heart. "And who are you?" he smiled to the girl beside Kagome.

"I'm Rin!" she bounced to her feet, coming a good two feet shorter than Sesshomaru. "Pleasure to meet you Sesshomaru! I am Kagomes cousin from Manhattan. I am visiting until we both go back to college." that seemed to sum things up quite nicely.

"Well hello Rin from Manhattan." he extended his hand for her to shake. As she accepted it he continued "I am Sesshomaru Takahashi, from this very town." he smiled, kind of. He more or less looked pleasent.

"You are wicked hot!" Kagome nearly fell off her chair at her cousins outgoing behaviour.

"Rin." she breathed.

"What? He is." now they were speaking as though Sesshomaru weren't even in the room.

"Thank you." Sesshomaru spoke up.

"Oh, no problem!" she released his hand and blushed slightly.

"Kagome, have you seen my idiot brother? He is around here somewhere." Sesshomaru was looking around, as though caring where Inuyasha was.

"Feh. Like I care where he went." Kagome was standing now as well.

"You sound just like him." Sesshomaru noted, "No offense."

"How can I not take offense to such an accusation?" Kagome laughed. The nervousness she was sensing at being confronted with Sesshomaru for the first time since . . . then, seemed to be melting away.

"Kagome, I know it is improper to say this in mixed company." he nodded toward Rin casually.

"OH! Right! I'm gone!" Rin bounced down a hallway and out of sight.

"I am sorry for my behavior. I was upset, and I didn't want to say things I would regret. Please forgive me Kagome." Sesshomaru took Kagomes hands in his.

"Sesshomaru no. I mean, you have nothing to be sorry about. I am the one who, I should have done something, or I don't know what I'm talking about. Your brother has a . . . power. That sounds awkward. Oh I am making everything horrible. Sesshomaru, I am sorry. I wish we could do everything again and have another try, but, I know that would be impossible at this point."

"Not impossible Kagome." Kagome saw a glint of hope at the end of a dark tunnel. A rescue plane in the middle of a deadly crisis, "Just improbable." The tunnel collapsed, the plane was shot down.

"Of course." Kagome sighed, looking around for Rin.

"Kaggie!" Rin found her way back to Kagome and Sesshomaru. "I found your brother. Judging by the height, and the cuteness I thought he was yours. Can I keep him?" Rin was just joking now, but the way she dragged him around by his sleeve was cute.

"Feh." Inuyasha shrugged her off but made no other motions.

"I believe a formal introduction is necessary, since my brother has no manners." Sesshomaru looked down to Rin, "Rin this is my infuriating little brother Inuyasha. Inuyasha, this is the charming and wonderful Rin. She is Kagomes cousin from Manhattan."

"Great. Nice ta meet ya Manhattan." Inuyasha saluted her and she nearly frowned. Nearly.

"After that beautiful introduction," she beamed at Sesshomaru, "All you have to say is 'nice ta meet chya Manhattan'?" she did her best impression of Inuyasha and Kagome burst out laughing.

"What's so funny wench?" she continued laughing. Unknown to Inuyasha, Rin was making faces behind him, that only Sesshomaru and Kagome could see. "What, what is it?"

Inuyasha turned around and saw Rin sticking out her upper jaw and dancing around like a chiken. As soon as she turned to meet Inuyasha heated glare she stopped and attempted to stifle her laughter.

"Sorry." she muttered between giggles.

"Feh."

"So what brings you two here?" Kagome asked, taking the heat off Rin.

"I came here to meet up with someone actually; and you know tag-along over there." Sesshomaru explained.

"Ass you told me to come with you." Inuyasha retailiated.

"I did no such thing." he denied.

"Yes you did."

"I refuse to play this childish game." Sesshomaru ended the debate, with a dignified stance. "Did not." he mumbled.

"Oh real mature Sess."

"Oh, nicknames! I love nicknames!" Rin piped up. "Lets see, since Kaggie is Kaggie, Inuyasha can be . . . Yashy, and Sesshomaru can be . . . fluffy!" Rin seemed satisified with that.

"Wait." Sesshomaru put his hand up. "Kagome can become 'Kaggie', and Inuyasha 'Yashy' . . . why am I 'fluffy'?" he questioned.

"Just go with it fluffy!" Rin smiled and pat him on the shoulder (having to reach as high as she could and stand on her tip-toes to do so). Sesshomaru made no more attempt to continue with the topic.

A short silence followed, "Or I can call you Sesshy. I like fluffy though. How about Sesshyfluffy? Nah, that's longer than Sesshomaru. I can call you Maruy. Or Homoy; no, I don't like that one. So Maruy -"

"Fluffy is fine." Sesshomaru interjected.

"Okay!"

"Well, would you lovely ladies like to accompany us to lunch?" Sesshomaru asked, finally changing the subject.

"I would love to! I am starved!" Rin latched her arm with Sesshomarus and began bouncing toward the foodcart. "Come on Kaggie!"

"Yes, Inuyasha, lets go." Sesshomaru called back.

Inuyasha looked at Kagome and Kagome glared at Inuyasha. He sighed heavily and extended his arm, "Shall we?"

"Whatever." Kagome followed her cousins trail, but didn't accept Inuyasha hand.

"Kagome!" he chased her through the crowd, catching up with her a few seconds later.

"What?"

"You know, you're a bitch."

"Oh, that's rich; coming from the worlds number one asshole!"

"Kagome, you didn't even let me explain that night." Inuyasha tried again.

"Explain what?" Kagome stopped walking.

"At the park, when you ran away from me, I wasn't using you Kagome. I - I know I'm a jerk. I just really really like you. I get freaked out when a girl doesn't like me back. Especially if I really like them." Inuyasha looked completely innocent as he made his declaration.

"Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why do you like me?"

"I don't know. There is too much to name I think." Inuyasha closed the distance, "And I think you like me too."

"You thought wrong." Kagome turned and continued following her cousins trail.

"Kagome!" he mentally curse. How could she resist him? No one else could.

"I'm not listening to your lies Inuyasha!"

"What bullshit is that!?"

"Just leave me alone!"

Kagome spotted Rin and Sesshomaru, apparently in a heated discussion, and sat down next to Rin. Sesshomaru looked over at her.

"What's wrong?" Rin and Sesshomaru asked together.

"Inuyasha is a lying jerk."

"I did not lie to you wench." He defended as he sat down next to Sesshomaru.

"Oh, right. Telling me how I feel. You just want some." Inuyasha rolled his eyes.

"You are thick you know that? I'm trying to pour my heart out to you, and you are ignoring and doubting everything I say. How do you expect anybody to love you?" something Inuyasha said struck a nerve in her.

"Maybe I don't want to be loved."

"Who doesn't want to be loved?" Kagome knew she would be lying if she said herself.

"Kagome, are you bleeding?" Rin asked.

"Where?" Rin moved aside Kagomes hair and noticed she was infact bleeding quite profusely from her neck.

"We got to get you to a hospital!" Rin exclaimed.

"There is nothing they can do Rin." Sesshomaru explained.

"Is that becasue of -"

"Yes." Sesshomaru cut her off.

"What do we do?" Rin seemed paniked.

"Leave it to me." Inuyasha said.

"Oh no, get . . . away . . . from . . ." Inuyasha picked Kagome up, and carried her out of the mall. He carried her back to the car and set her in the passengers seat. "Where are . . . we . . . going?" her breath was labored for some reason she didn't know.

"We're going to my house."

"Why?" Kagome asked

"Because, my Dad will know what to do. I just hope he's home."

~*

"Sesshomaru, is everything really going to be okay?" Rin asked.

"It's hard to tell Rin. Like I said on the phone, Kagome doesn't want to believe Inuyasha, let alone fall in love with him. She needs someones advice. That is why I asked you here to visit her. Now that you have met Inuyasha you can make a valid point of trying to convince her to fall in love with him."

"But Sess, what if she doesn't listen to me?"

"We have no other options at this point."

"I hope she'll be okay." Rins energy, bounciness, and overall 'rinness' seemed to die out.

"Hey," Sesshomaru reached across the table, holding Rins hand in his. "It'll be okay." he reassured her.

Rin looked down at his hand on hers and smiled. He quickly let go and went back to a formal stance. "Now, shall we devise a course of action." he was almost blushing. Almost.

Rin giggled and they began strategizing.

~*~*~*~*

"Dad?" Inuyasha called as he entered the house. He placed Kagome on a couch and began looking around.

"Don't think . . . I am staying here." Kagome shouted, as best she could.

"Shut up!" Inuyasha called back.

"Inuyasha! That is no way to treat a guest in this house!" Nahori reprimended.

"Sorry. Where is dad?" Inuyasha asked.

"He is out in the study." Inuyasha ran to the study, knocking harshly on the door.

"Dad!"

"Enter."

Inuyasha ran into the room, sitting in the chair across the desk from his father. "Sir, I have a problem."

"What is it Inuyasha?"

"Okay, long story short, I'm mated and she hates me."

Tai allowed the cigar he had been casually puffing on to drop from his mouth. He picked it up with dignity, and placed it in the ashtray, he then walked over to his son and slapped him across the face.

"What were you thinking!? Taking a mate. You can't even take care of yourself!" when he finished yelling he walked to the window. Inuyasha remained quiet. Knowing his father didn't want the question to be answered.

"How much time do you have?" Tai asked.

"Time? What do you mean Sir?"

"You don't know? This isn't something you can procrastinate. If your mate does not accept you, she will die."

"Yeah I know that part."

"There is a time limit! You can't just drag these things out."

"A time limit?" Inuyasha became visibly ill.

"Yes. When did the mating occur?"

"Umm. . . oh . . shit . . ." Inuyasha was calculating the time in his head, give or take a week or two, "Late November. Like three or four weeks ago."

"Oh heaven." Tai collapased into his chair. "You have until the New Year Inuyasha."

"What?! That's like a week!" Christmas was on Saturday, two days from now, and that meant that New Years was the following Saturday - giving him a week and two days.

"You shouldn't have mated without knowing everything."

"I didn't know! I was drunk!"

"So you do not love her either?"

"I . . . don't know. I think about her all the time, but I can't tell if its because I have to save her, or because I love her. I don't know what to do. I've never been this confused in my life. More importantly though, Kagome is on our couch now. Her wound wont stop bleeding."

"Her neck wound." Inuyasha nodded. "Let me take a look."

The two demons walked out of the study, and toward the weary Kagome. Kagome was still trying to be strong, saying things like 'I'm not staying here you sicko'.

"Kagome, may I?" Tai asked. She didn't answer, she just nodded.

"It is definately rejecting." Tai murmered, "Her blood flow will stop soon. It seems you have even less time than I thought." he stood up and leaned over to Inuyasha, "I'ld give it four days." he whispered.

"FOUR DAYS!" Inuyasha shouted.

"Four days till what?" Kagome asked.

"Till my Sister Lillian comes to visit." Tai said with conviction.

"Oh Lilly is coming?" Nahori asked from the kitchen.

Tai motioned for Inuyasha to explain to his mother. He did as he was told.

"Kagome, listen to me." She nodded, "I know my son is a jerk sometimes, and I realize that no one is perfect; but please, consider his words. He does not lie. If he says he likes you, he means it. He may be narrow minded, and stubborn, but in the greater scheme of things, he is a wonderful child. Please, listen to him." Tai stood up, gently brushing the hair out of Kagomes face.

"Thank you Tai." Kagome had never met this man, but she somehow knew who he was, and what his purpose was in her life, then she passed out.

"Kagome!" Inuyasha ran to her.

"It's just from loss of blood. The wound stopped bleeding however, so it will be fine now." Inuyasha sat down on the floor, holding Kagomes hand in his. "You really do love her don't you." Inuyasha looked at his hand holding hers.

"I guess . . . I do." he smiled, and watched Kagome.

~* This is easy as lovers go. So don't complicate it by hesitating
This is wonderful as loving goes.
This is tailor-made, what's the sense in waiting?

I said, "I've got to be honest, I've been waiting for you all my life."
For so long I thought I was asylum bound, but just seeing you makes me think twice.
And being with you here makes me sane. I fear I'll go crazy if you leave my side.

"You've got wits, you've got looks, you've got passion,
but are you brave enough to leave with me tonight?"*~
