Out There
Chapter 13: Day Three (The breaking point).
Anubis_Himura

~* The lights are out in the city tonight
so close your eyes
gaze up at the heavens
and see if you can put me out

If I could have one wish tonight
I'd wish upon a satellite
to bring me back to you (repeat)
you spend your whole life searching for
all the things we think we want
yet never really knowing what we have *~

~*~ Kagome's POV ~*~*

I woke up to the sunlight on my face. I felt exceptionally great this day. I wasn't sure why, but I hadn't felt this good in months. I rolled my shoulders back, and stretched out my neck a little. I expected Inuyasha to come in any second. He didn't seem to want to leave me alone for more than a few minutes at a time. It scared me how worried he was. It was almost like he cared.

"Maybe he does." I mused out loud, standing to make the bed.

I shook off the comment, not thinking any more on the subject.

"I never did find out what Sesshomaru was so testy about yesterday." I again spoke to myself, smiling as I remembered his death glares to Inuyasha at dinner.

I finished making the bed and got dressed. I sat on the bed and looked at the clock. 8:16.

"Three . . . two . . . one." I said out loud and pointed to the door.

"Morning Kagome." Inuyasha said from the other side of my door, knocking lightly.

"Morning Inuyasha." I said cheerily, walking to the door and opening it. "How are you?"

"Great. You? How did you sleep?"

"Fine. Fine."

"Hungry?" he asked me, a smirk lighting his face.

I smiled back, nodding. "Yeah."

~* Normal POV *~

Inuyasha and Kagome walked downstairs, finding Nahori was already busy and going about making breakfast. Inuyasha greeted his mother with a kiss on the forehead and a hug. Nahori smiled back, asking him to set the table.

Sesshomaru sat at the table already, reading over the newspaper. Rin was over, sitting in the living room flicking through the channels. Kagome went and sat next to her.

"Hey Rin." she said, watching the channels vary.

"Hey Kags." she said back, continuing to change between one channel and the next. "There is nothing on this early."

"Yeah I know. What are you doing here so early?" Kagome asked, turning to look at her cousin.

Rin blushed slightly and looked to Kagome. "I didn't exactly go home." she said, hoping Kagome would gather her meaning.

Kagome gave her a puzzled look. "What?"

"I stayed here, last night." Rin explained, subtly gesturing toward the dinning room.

"You slept in the dinning room?" Kagome asked, not gathering Rin's subtlety.

"No." Rin whispered. She continued tilting her head toward the room, where Sesshomaru was still reading through the morning paper.

"You slept here last night . . . " Kagome leaned over looking into the dinning room directly. "With Sess!" her eyes lit up as she figured out what her cousin was saying.

"Thanks for telling the world Kags." Rin laughed.

"Sorry." Kagome lowered her voice. "That's so exciting."

"Yeah, I know." Rin bounced up and down in her seat, not bothering to hide her excitement any more.

"Did Yash find out?" Kagome asked, thinking that could have been why Sesshomaru was so mad the night before.

"Yeah. He walked in on us." Rin said, still laughing slightly.

"Oh my god. No wonder Sess was pissed at Yash."

"Breakfast!" Nahori called from the kitchen.

Kagome and Rin went into the dinning room where they ate breakfast in silence. Sesshomaru was still determined to show what the definition of a 'cold shoulder' was to Inuyasha. While Inuyasha looked much like a dog hiding from an angry master. Kagome and Rin shared a few giggles at it. Nahori rarely ate with them. Usually she would bring Tai his breakfast and never return.

The four ate relatively quickly, each having a different reason. Kagome wanted to get out and take a walk, or do something out side. Inuyasha, simply because he liked to eat quickly. Sesshomaru wanted to get a jump start on the day, and Rin had to get back to her aunt and uncles before they realized she was gone.

Nahori walked back in, asking how everything was.

"It was great Nahori, thank you." Kagome said, placing her dish in the sink. "I'm going out for a walk." she said.

"Wait up." Inuyasha said, placing his dish in the sink as well. "I'll come with you." he explained.

"You don't have to Yash." Kagome said, heading out the door.

"I want to. Wait up." the two left the house.

Sesshomaru proceeded to eat, while Rin got up. "I have to get back to my aunt and uncles. I'll see you later Sesshy."

"Bye Rin." he said, keeping his stoic expression. Rin shook her head, kissing the top of his head and leaving.

"So why are you spending so much time with me?" Kagome asked, walking along the gardens; which were snow covered and even more beautiful.

"Because." Inuyasha said, leaving the mystery.

"Because?" Kagome inquired.

"Because, you're my friend." he said, not thinking any more on the subject.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

A moment passed in awkward silence as they continued to walk around. Kagome suddenly sat down on the garden wall, staring off into space. Inuyasha sat down next to her, inquiring about her health. She explained she was fine and that she just wanted to enjoy the beautiful day. They sat on the wall, Inuyasha watching intently for any sign of illness from Kagome; while Kagome stared dreamily into the beyond, searching for who knew what.

"Yash." she said after a few minutes. "Do you miss Kikyou?"

Yash looked startled. He hadn't been asked about Kikyou in quite some time. He thought for a second, that perhaps he did, that somehow Kagome reminded him of Kikyou. Then he thought better about it. They were nothing alike. He smiled reminiscently. He still felt responsible for the death of Kikyou, but he couldn't change the past. He let out a sigh. "No. Not in a boyfriend/girlfriend way. I just feel responsible. I guess I miss her being alive, but not her as a girlfriend." he wondered if he had made any sense. "Why?"

"Why?" Kagome questioned back. "Hmm. I don't know. I think about it sometimes. That night. And that night at Greggers. Ya know Yash -"

"You don't have to say anything Kagome. I'm sure that my behaviour was unacceptable, and I'm sorry that I took advantage of you. But I'd really like to move on from that night and try to be your friend. I know you probably hate me but . . ."

"Actually I was going to say that hanging out with you, here at your house, made me realize your not quite the jerk you try to be. And I'm not sure if I completely regret that night anymore. I mean, I still think it was random and now when I think about it I feel awkward. But really," Kagome shrugged. "That's life. It's full of choices and decisions, and trials and happiness. So, now that we've had trials, lets try to find happiness." Kagome smiled and jumped off the wall. "Lets go downtown."

Inuyasha didn't have time to comment on any of her thoughts, or on the statement of going downtown before she grabbed his hand and pulled him off the wall. "Come on. You don't really expect me to go anywhere without my body guard do you?" she smiled and led him down the driveway and toward town.

"Guess not." he smiled back. "But how are we going to find happiness downtown?"

The pair walked around the town for most of the morning. It was becoming quite cold as the day rolled on, and it looked like there was going to be a snow storm in their midst toward late afternoon. Kagome shivered and her teeth chattered together as they walked into the coffee shop.

"Hey," Yash said to the guy working. "Can we have two large coffees, one with two creams and five sugars, the other with three creams and four sugars please." the guy noted the order and looked at the total.

"Four twenty." he said.

Yash rolled his eyes, this guy had the personality of a porcupine on lithium. Yash handed him a five and the guy gave him back the eighty cents.

Kagome was already sitting at a corner table. Yash came over with the drinks and smiled. She smiled back thanking him.

"Ow. Hot." she said, setting hers back on the table.

"So, have you had enough of the town for one day?" Yash asked, gazing out the window.

"I think so." Kagome said, taking a sip from her coffee. "I'm freezing though. Can we stay in here a little longer?"

"Sure. Anything you want."

"Thanks."

"Inuyasha," Kagome began uncertainly on their walk back to Inuyasha's house. "Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why are you being so nice to me?" she looked away from him and continued. "I mean, honestly. There's no one around for you to make think you're some kind of angel. Or, to make fun of you, or me. So tell me honestly why."

Inuyasha let out a half-hearted chuckle. "I thought it would be obvious." he looked over at Kagome and smiled. "But I guess not. Hey isn't that Rin?"

Kagome looked away from Inuyasha and up the street. It was Rin jogging toward them. "Kagome! Yash! Hey!"

"Hello Rin." They said in unison. "How are you?" Kagome continued.

"Great how are you?"

"Okay."

“Just okay? That’s sad.” She said, as bouncy as ever. “Just out for a morning jog.” She explained, though no one asked.

“Awesome.” Kagome said.

“I’m sorry, you were probably talking about something more important than my exercise.” She laughed and began jogging in place. “Well, talk to you later.” And she ran off.

Kagome and Inuyasha started back to the house. “So, you think it’s obvious?” Kagome asked as though Rin hadn’t popped up.

“Yep.” He said evenly.

“Care to tell those of us who aren’t so quick on the uptake?” Kagome asked.

Inuyasha would love to tell Kagome, her life depended on her knowledge. But he couldn’t. He shook his head and smiled at her. “Nah. You’ll just have to figure it out.”

Kagome rolled her eyes and shook her head. She then ran a little bit ahead of Inuyasha. “I’ll race ya.” And she took off.

**

Inuyasha looked out the window. He sensed something was very wrong. He knew that time was short, but he couldn’t convince Kagome that he loved her. He still wasn’t positive if he did or not. Could it be that he just had guilt about getting her in such a position? He shook his head in the negative. Of course he loved her. What wasn’t to love?

Inuyasha lay in bed now, drifting between sleep and reality. He sniffed the air. There was an unpleasant tang to it; and it wasn’t just from the storm outside. There was the stench of sickness. Of . . . death.

Inuyasha panicked. He got out of bed and ran to the next room where Kagome slept. He saw her sleeping form and started to calm down. Then he realized by the small light of the moon, shining across her body, that her chest didn’t move up. With each breath her chest should rise and fall. It didn’t. He sniffed again and the sickening tang of death invaded him more than before.

He collapsed to his knees, screaming. Sesshomaru came running in, followed by Nahori.
"Kagome!? Kagome!" Inuyasha shook her violently. Her limp head like a rag doll shaking back and forth.

"Inuyasha, your time is up." Sesshomaru said calmly.

"NO! KAGOME!”
